Just a thought. I was reading a fic about Guy & Marian on DF and I noticed how
biased the readers seemed toward Guy and practically lashed out at Marian
because she made a little mistake which ended up making Goggy boy a little
cranky.
I think it's a shame that the female characters seem attract so much dislike,
even hatred. Though on some levels the women characters are not angels. Isabella
is a good example. However. look at what she has had to endure. No wonder she
went mad the poor thing. And Maz. She fought for what she believed in. She died
for she believed in. That's a very brave thing to do. Not that ppl should go out
and do that, but it is admirable in quite a few ways. Plus she wasn't a cold
heartless bitch. She didn't like decieving guy. She wanted to help him and he
let her down. She had every right to be mad at him.

I'm not saying that the blokes are evil. I'm saying that I think it's a bit of a
shame that a lot of the sympathy goes to the men. Why not look both ways?

It was so good to see RH & Maz with strong chemistary as lovers for a change.
That scene was so nice. JA even looked less like the care bear from Hell and
managed to reciprecate Lucy's lovely, strong tenderness.

Still a MAG fan, but it was gorgeous. And I even cried. Funny didn't cry when
Guy died.

Hey all,
I just saw the last episode on line. Now I know what I am getting ready to say
may upset some but i state it is my OPINION so if you don't like it I apologize
now I hope not to affend anyone.

Here goes:
I had a hard enough time dealing with Robin Hood leaving. Alright fine Jonas
wants to move on no hard feelings his choice. But how exactly can you have Robin
Hood if Robin Hood is dead? I just don't get it. I was willing to put up with
that, i even bit the bullet when Alan was killed hard but I tried. But when they
kill off Guy I am completely done. I just don't get it any more. How can they
have a show? I was willing to watch a fourth season if Guy stuck around, but he
isn't so I am gone. My fan fic (fanfiction.net under BethGisborne) will maybe
have some of three in it like Guy joining or Meg and them working together (I
wishe they did that more in the series they were hilarious together) but nothing
else I'll stick to the first two seasons thank you very much. I was heart broken
watching the episode after that point. I couldn't finish. Sorry I did but in
mute i just couldn't do it. So I guess I'll have to watch the first two seasons
and MI 5 (here in states) to get my RA fix. I am still so disappointed in this
season I can't begin. And yes I am now off my soap box.

Seriously does anyon know if there will be a fourth now? I might actually watch
it any way who knows. Again I hope not to upset anyone just let out some
frustrations that have built up over thirteen weeks. So I will quiet while I am
ahead. Best wishes to all.
Beth

GRANDDAD'S GIRL IS MAID FOR TV
Next Story | Previous Story | Back to list

09:45 - 04 November 2006
Robin Hood and Little John may be more used to walking through Sherwood Forest, but Maid Marian may be more comfortable in Sthingyhorpe's Brumby Woods.

For Lucy Griffiths, who plays Maid Marian in the new BBC One drama Robin Hood, often visits her grandfather who lives in the town.Don Hague (83), from Weymouth Crescent, said he was 'extremely proud' of his granddaughter, and she even managed to secure him five minutes of fame in the new series.

He said: "I am extremely proud of Lucy. While she was filming in Hungary, I flew over to see her with her mum and dad and her sister.

"We ended up being extras in the episode shown last week."

The family were stood behind Lucy during the scene where Maid Marian has her hair cut off as a punishment by the Sheriff of Nottingham, played by Keith Allen.

Mr Hague said: "When we got there, someone came up and asked us if we wanted to be extras in one of the scenes - so we said yes.

"We went to the wardrobe department and they rigged us all up with costumes.

"I really enjoyed it - it was super. And they looked after us all very well."

The family flew out to Hungary over the summer while the series was being filmed and were astonished by what they saw.

"It seems ridiculous to go to Hungary to do Robin Hood," Mr Hague said. "But they had a complete medieval village with a castle and medieval market. It was wonderful."

And the sets which look so convincing on the screen were actually made out of polystyrene.

Mr Hague added: "The technicians were all Hungarian, and one of the funniest things I saw was one of them who spent most of his time walking around with a paintbrush attached to a long stick so he could touch up the white patches on the polystyrene."

The family has enjoyed watching Lucy in the series, and her younger sister, Sophie, may have also caught the stardom bug.

Mr Hague explained: "Lucy is a cracking singer, but Sophie is super, she is a wonderful singer."

The proud granddad now plans to spend a few days holiday with his multi-talented family at Sophie's home in Brighton.

Mr Hague has lived in Sthingyhorpe for many years.

His daughter, Lucy's mother, moved away from the family home to the south of England and now resides in Brighton.

Lucy was born in Hertfordshire and has appeared in several stage productions in Brighton, most notably taking the lead role in a stage production of Annie when she was still a schoolgirl.

One of my rellies was Sir Richard of Huntington who had a bitch of a daughter who ran away with an outlaw. She got sick of him later and left him. Mum believes she could have been one of the people the legend of Marian was based upon.
My family and I watch a lot of Robin Hood based programmes. Our favourite is the Kevin Costner one. We even visited the castle they used for filming when we lived in France. That is closely followed by the fox version which is sooo cute!!! Then the current BBC version and finally the michael praed version.

FUN PRODUCTION FACTS
Robin Hood was filmed on location in Hungary.

The cast all attended a special Hood Academy, a kind of boot camp for trainee
outlaws where they were taught riding, fencing, archery — how to successfully
rob the rich to feed the poor.

Executive producer and lead writer Dominic Minghella is the younger brother of
Oscar-winning film director and writer Anthony Minghella.

Joe Armstrong (Allan-a-Dale) is the son of famous British actor, Alun Armstrong
(Bleak House).

Sam Troughton (Much) is the grandson of Patrick Troughton, a former Doctor Who
and the first man to play Robin Hood on television.

Many famous actors have played Robin, including Sean Connery, Kevin Costner,
John Cleese, Errol Flynn and Douglas Fairbanks.

Robin Hood has even been the subject of a Walt Disney cartoon and a gangster
style musical.

A week-long Robin Hood Festival takes place every year at Sherwood Forest and
attracts over 70,000 visitors. Medieval entertainments include jousting,
falconry, strolling players and jesters.

WHAT THE BRITISH PRESS SAID:

"I love it. The whole thing whizzes along with the speed of a new tram." The
Times
"It's exciting, witty, and now and again actually has some pretty cool messages
in there about class and fairness and honor. We watched Robin Hood absolutely
gripped from start to finish." Daily Star

"Rollicking good fun." Daily Mirror

"This new take on an old favorite doesn't disappoint. The series gets off to a
rip-roaring start, with plenty of action, comedy and romance, and rising
heart-throb Jonas Armstrong in the lead." Daily Mail

"It's witty, action-packed, and ever so slightly camp. With Keith Allen as a
wonderfully wicked Sheriff." Express on Sunday

"Fun in a way most people over ten have probably forgotten. A thoroughly modern
piece in many ways, but with the richly satisfying simplicity of those shows we
adored as kids. Maid Marian is more medieval Spice Girl than wimp-in-a-wimple.
But there's something reassuringly vintage about the way it handles the question
of good and evil. You know who's who, all right, because the good guys just are
good, while the villains make you long to boo, hiss and hurl your lollipop
sticks at the screen." Daily Express

"The people who run television have seriously underestimated our appetite for
derring-do for far too long. Here, at last, is a show where everyone can get
dressed up in ridiculous clothes and live in a forest supported only by cunning
and bows and arrows." London Evening Standard

"Robin Hood kicks off at high voltage and then continues to up the tension.
Robin (played with charm by newcomer Jonas Armstrong) is suitably brilliant with
both weapons and women. Richard Armitage smolders magnificently as Guy of
Gisborne." The Observer

"Jonas has charm, the direction has pace, and the villains are excellent."
People

"The energy is boundless and, as is conventional, the screen lights up whenever
the Sheriff appears." Daily Telegraph

"The script plays for laughs, and there's some tasty swash and buckle…Must-See
TV." Mail On Sunday

"Robin, played by Jonas Armstrong, is a warrior, an adventurer and a merry man's
man. Harness this characterization to a script replete with daft laughs,
will-they-won't-they romance, cartoon villains and derring-do and you've a
winning recipe. Pacy and entertaining." Guardian

WHO'S WHO

Robin Hood, also known as Robin of Locksley and Robin, Earl of Huntingdon

Robin has the arrogance and leadership qualities natural to the nobility, but
gained a new perspective on the value of human life during the Crusades. He
returns from the Holy Land an honorable veteran, only to find England corrupted
by greed, crippled by taxes and shattered by poverty. Undaunted by authority,
though a little world-weary and battle-scarred, he takes a stand for justice.

Marian

Courageous, smart and proud, Marian is also a champion of the poor, but unlike
Robin, she has to appear to toe the line in Nottingham for the sake of her
father, Edward. Underneath a tough, cool exterior is a heart burning for someone
worthy of her love. Events may have eroded Marian's gentleness, but they have
left untouched her generosity of spirit and keen sense of duty to her people.

The Sheriff of Nottingham, also known as Vaizey

A ruthless, charming, ambitious, paranoid, driven, cruel, calculating,
political-minded, insecure, witty, devious, intelligent, highly-strung
strategist.

Sir Guy of Gisborne

Vain, ambitious, loyal, practical, unemotional, single-minded, boastful and
frustrated, Gisborne is an insecure bully, capable of tremendous cruelty in his
pursuit of heritage and position. Yet beyond this drive for recognition is his
one hope for redemption — winning the love of Marian.

Much

Robin's manservant is sometimes silly, but forever loyal, hungry, and yearning
for the warmth of home. Although he hates the forest, if he were not at Robin's
side (wherever that may be), Much would wither and die.

Allan-A-Dale

Witty, cheeky, Allan would talk the hind legs off a donkey if Robin did not rein
him in. He is a pathological liar, which makes him a brilliant front-man for
scams.

Little John, also known as John Little

Pure muscle. Point him in the right direction, switch him on, and he will
destroy everything in his path. He does what he is told, and isn't plagued by
ideas (as Robin is). His love for his wife and son may one day be his downfall.

Will Scarlett

Son of Locksley's carpenter, Will is the gang's chief engineer. He can construct
anything from any material — so long as it's wood. Will's family suffered during
the bleak years of Robin's absence, and his passionate hatred of the Sheriff
suits the gang's core mission.

Roy, also known as Royston White

One of the original forest outlaws, Roy is Little John's protégé — brave,
sarcastic, brutal and cunning. But he misses his Mom.

Djaq

A Saracen maiden who was kidnapped from her home and sold as a slave in England,
Djaq escaped from her owner and joined a group of traveling entertainers —
gaining expert acting and make-up skills. She found life considerably more
interesting (and a lot safer) posing as a man. Robin finds her gift for disguise
a real asset.

sacrifice his title and land. He soon finds some allies and creates an outlaw
gang in the forest.
Episode one premieres Saturday, March 3, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode two
The Sheriff resorts to brutal, random torture in an attempt to find Robin, who

escapes, The Sheriff learns his enemy's one weakness.
Episode two premieres Saturday, March 10, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode three
Robin Hood is blamed when a mysterious sniper murders innocent people in
Nottingham. When the Sheriff is nearly killed, he further incriminates Robin as

at all.
Episode three premieres Saturday, March 17, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Robin and his men discover an abandoned baby in Sherwood Forest, moments before
the Sheriff kidnaps Roy. Imprisoned, Roy is given a terrible choice: kill Robin

two hours' sleep?
Episode four premieres Saturday, March 24, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode five
The Nottingham Fair arrives, bringing with it the lure of the silver arrow
competition. But Robin must resist temptation until he has dealt with something
more pressing: the Sheriff's move to buy Saracen slave labor for his lethal
mine. Will Robin put the mine out of business and get to Nottingham in time to
win the prize? Or is there a different reward in the shape of a new member of
the gang?
Episode five premieres Saturday, March 31, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode six
Robin and his gang are not fooled when they come across a farmer named Flaxton
and his son on their way to Nottingham. To their delight, they discover Flaxton
is really a tax inspector, whose job it is to count the mountain of tax silver
currently housed in Nottingham Castle. Even better, with Flaxton as their cover,
entry to the castle is easy. Perhaps too easy.
Episode six premieres Saturday, April 7, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode seven
A family reunion between Allan and his long-lost brother Tom turns sour when Tom
and his crooked friends tag along with the gang. Tom proves to be far more
trouble than he is worth, first trying to rob Marian's house, and eventually
getting himself caught by the Sheriff. Worse, Marian is in mortal danger from a
murderous Gisborne. Robin must try to save Tom before helping Marian. Even if
Robin can get to her in time, will she be forced to make the ultimate sacrifice
to prove her innocence?
Episode seven premieres Saturday, April 14, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode eight
King Richard's birthday turns out to be a day of surprises for the gang. First,
Djaq is captured when they raid Gisborne's party at Locksley Manor, then Robin

Djaq. They need Robin to choose between helping them save her and seeking
revenge on Gisborne.
Episode eight premieres Saturday, April 21, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode nine
Castle scientist Lambert invents explosive black powder, but worries it could be
a lethal weapon in the hands of someone like the Sheriff. Lambert hides his
notebook, but the Sheriff tortures him until he talks. Much gets himself
arrested so that he can rescue Lambert once he's inside the castle. But the
Sheriff foils his plan by making him Earl of Bonchurch. Lord Much worries about
what else the Sheriff has planned, but forgets when he sees who has been
assigned to look after him.
Episode nine premieres Saturday, April 28, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode ten
When Robin stops an arsonist from burning down Locksley Church, he unleashes a
series of events culminating in the discovery of a mysterious Saracen visitor at

to show them there's nothing to fear. But there's everything to fear in the true
power of the forces converging on the castle.
Episode ten premieres Saturday, May 5, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode eleven
A routine trip to Locksley to collect new weaponry descends into chaos when
Robin and Little John witness the capture of their bow maker and the arrest of
Little John's son. When Little John tries to save his son, he's also carted off
to the castle dungeons. Fate brings the last member of the Little family, Alice,
to prison, temporarily reuniting Little John with his estranged wife. But while
John and Alice are talking about what's best for the future of their family, the
Sheriff is working on a Festival of Pain, with the Littles as the star
attraction.
Episode eleven premieres Saturday, May 12, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

Episode twelve

hails a return to much happier days, but for Will and Allan it means a return to
their lackluster former lives. And for Robin and Marian it means her impending
marriage to Guy of Gisborne. Robin is desperate to find evidence convicting
Gisborne of his crimes, while Marian sets out on one last mission as the
Nightwatchman. But as the Sheriff and his men surround Robin and the gang, it
seems Marian and Robin will be separated forever.

confront the King and abandons Much and the gang. His world has simply fallen
apart - there is no point in being Robin Hood anymore. But all is not what it
seems. The discovery of a terrible secret will spur Robin back into action and
see the Sheriff and Gisborne defeated before the day is through.
Episode thirteen premieres Saturday, May 26, 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

CAST INTERVIEWS

JONAS ARMSTRONG IS ROBIN HOOD
On playing an icon:
"When I got the job I was over in India filming. I was amazed - gob-smacked even
- but ecstatic because it's such a well-known and well-loved character,
everybody knows Robin Hood."

Getting in shape for the role:
"I was in the gym every day - I have quite a slight build anyway so I was trying
to eat a lot more and go to the gym and go swimming. Once I got to Budapest, we
had only one week until filming started. We were on the horses every day and
practicing archery, sword fighting and unarmed combat every day, so it was quite
difficult. Then at the end of the week they threw me a sword and said, 'Right,
now look amazing with it!' It's a Saracen sword from the Middle East, so there's
a very specific way of fighting with it. I think I've really come on with it
over the series."

The best part about being Robin Hood:
"It's a really good buzz when you're stuck on a horse and told to fly around
one-handed with a bow in one hand, shouting orders - that's brilliant and I
really enjoy that. They gave me free rein on the horses because I had to be on
them a lot more. They gave me more time to learn and paid extra attention to me.
I'm the only one who is allowed to gallop on a horse!"

On his character:
"He's a flawed character and has downsides to his personality. He's not just
this do-gooder who hasn't got a bad bone in his body - he does have some bad
aspects. He can be sidetracked and become clouded by his own agenda, which can
strain his relationships with the outlaws. He's quite an arrogant character,
rather vain and he can be self-centered. He has to have these darker moments -
it makes him human. He's supposed to be this dashing, swashbuckling hero - and
he has got that - but there's another side to him too. It makes him different
from previous Robin Hoods, but overall, Robin is still essentially a very
decent, good-spirited person."

On his relationship with Marian:
"Robin thinks he's got a way with the ladies! Marian sees right through it. She
says in the first episode, 'Seven years and you're still peddling the same old
drivel - does it ever work?' She's not interested. They were sweethearts and
then Robin went off to fight for King and Country in the Holy Land. Obviously
Marian was a bit miffed when he decided to leave, going for glory rather than
staying with her. He comes back and just thinks he can pick up where he left off
and get her to fall back into his arms but it doesn't go as easily as that.
Which makes it much better! It's about him trying to woo her."

"I think it's a love story. There's the battle between the good and the bad, the
tyrant and the hero, which is obviously Robin and the Sheriff. There's also
loads of action that will engage an audience - fighting and stunts and
everything else - but the love triangle between Sir Guy of Gisborne, Marian and
Robin is the most obvious line of the whole thing, I think, and the one I tried
to concentrate more on."

RICHARD ARMITAGE IS GUY OF GISBORNE
On playing the villain:"I'm having fun playing the bad guy because you can be
really quite vile to people and it's very amusing to do that. You get to express
all those dark qualities that you can't always do in everyday life. I'm hoping
and praying that when people are watching the scenes between Gisborne and Marian
they are squirming in their seats with their skin crawling, and I'll end up
getting lots of hate mail!"

How Gisborne relates to Robin:
"They're opposite sides of a similar coin - they were contemporaries of each
other and they've grown in very different directions. While Robin is the hero,
Gisborne is the anti-hero. He wants the trappings of fame, fortune and
popularity but he just doesn't have the qualities to achieve that. In my head
Gisborne is his own hero. What he is fighting for he completely believes in -
I've convinced myself! He's also a rival to Robin when it comes to Marian. His
initial move towards her is that she could be a token bride. She's a lady, she
carries great status with her and she's obviously the most desirable woman in
the vicinity. But Gisborne falls for her. When Robin is made an outlaw, it's
very convenient for him. It sets him in a much more favorable position as a
marriage option. Love aside, the prospect of Marian going into the forest and
living as a vagrant - although the romantic in us would hope that she would do
that - she has to think of her father and Gisborne knows this. Whether or not
she will ever love him doesn't really matter, because she may well be bound to
him by those practical voices."

The relationship between Gisborne and Marian:
"She does unravel him slightly towards the end of this series. It's been very
interesting playing moments where he is doing the most awful slaughter and then
in the next moment he is declaring how much he loves this young girl. It was
quite a challenge to work out what kind of guy could separate himself like that.
Mind you, I'm sure that these kind of tyrants in history have been able to go
home to their wives and say I love you!"

On working with Keith Allen:
"Initially I took very baby steps with him because he's quite a volatile man,
but actually it's turned out that our relationship character-wise and off-screen
has developed. I really enjoy the scenes with him - the best fun has been
working with Keith."

On training for the role:
"We did riding in the morning and then we went to the studio and did fighting,
sword fighting, and archery in the afternoon. You've got grown men from 20 to 40
all in a room being 10-years old again and loving it. When guest artists come
out to work on all the different episodes, you can see in their eyes that
they're about to have the greatest adventure of their lives. It's so appealing!"

On working with animals:
"As soon as you point a horse towards open land, when it has been standing
around all day, you can guarantee that it will want to run in that direction, so
when they said 'Action!' - and to be honest the horses understand 'Action!' -
they go whether you prompt them or not ... and my horse bolted. It wanted to run
for its life and I was on the back of it. Everyone was shouting at me to stop,
which made me laugh because I thought I actually really do want to stop and if I
had any control over this horse I would be stopping it! But it's very amusing
working with animals, because they have no concept of bodily function. Once in
the middle of a love scene with Marian where we're standing by a horse, the
horse did an enormous dump. Lucy's (Griffiths, who plays Marian) a trouper and
carried on, but I was crying with laughter."

On his first Robin Hood:
"Michael Praed as Robin Hood - I remember thinking 'yeah, that's what I want to
be like', and getting a black marker pen and painting hairs on my chest as a
10-year-old because I wanted to look like Robin Hood!"

LUCY GRIFFITHS IS MARIAN
On Marian's relationship with Robin:
"In her opinion, he treated her badly. When he arrives back, she's having none
of it. He's constantly trying to win her over by being charming and cheeky,
occasionally by being truly romantic, but mostly just acting like a teenager in
the beginning stages of romance. Their relationship is later called into
question and things become a bit more serious and there's a bit of an ultimatum.
But, in the beginning, she's not happy with him at all."

On the modernity of her Marian:
"Traditionally Maid Marian is not exactly a weak character, but this Marian is
physically quite able. She actually goes around doing her own fighting and
protects other people. She's a strong woman and, although she loves Robin Hood
desperately, you get the feeling that she could live without him because she's
strong enough on her own."

On working with her mostly male cast:
"The archery, horse-riding and sword-fighting lessons became a very entertaining
competition between the boys, which was fun to watch! I've mostly enjoyed the
company and, for me, it's made the job. Having such a big group of very young,
very talented and very funny people around me has just made what could
potentially have been quite a difficult job fun. Obviously, you're away for six
months and you can't go back home every weekend and it's difficult. But they're
all more experienced than I am, and I've learned a lot from watching them work -
which is what I was hoping for."

On watching herself on-screen:
"I actually didn't like it at first, because I was freaked out by the fact I
didn't look anything like I thought I did, and my voice didn't sound the same,
either. So, at first, I was quite disoriented. But now I actually like watching
myself back, because I learn quite a lot from it. If you haven't seen what
you're doing on a job this long, I think you might begin to doubt what you're
doing and become discouraged. Because I haven't been through any official kind
of training I'm really learning on the job, and I think watching the takes can
do a world of good."

I'd just like to say that I think Lara and Isabella are just bloody brill as.

Lara hasn't had telly experiance, yet the way she pulled off a woman who has
been put through so much and is crumbling into a pathetic mess is just amazing.

Like Marian, she is twisted into all sorts of directions by men only to be let
down. Like Marian, she has given into her insecurities.

I can't wait to see what Lara will do in the following eps. And if there is one
and if she lives, season 4

Well, this wasn't exactly a spoiler, Leah - it was right then in the bl**dy
BBC press release! Couldn't *believe* they'd be so damn casual about it,
either! :¬(

> I didn't think Allan was going to die. I don't want him to. I was hoping

Jonas talked about 3 or 4 deaths in total, I think. So... Allan's one, I'd
guess Robin's another. Isabella may well die, as might Vasey - seeing as
Keith's not desperate to do another series. Guy...well, Richard's got so
much else on with Spooks, so he's another possible death.

> This is really saddening. But hey, we have fan fic! And, well, lets be

I know, but it's still not what I want to see! :¬( I wanted Allan and Much
to go off into the sunset together! :¬{

My gut feeling is that a lot of fan fic is going to be pretending that much
of S3 didn't happen... ;¬D
