Just had to let you all know that I received my updated
samples of fabric from Widebacks Australia today & they are
yummy!! I’m really enjoying putting together this folder of samples and
leave it on my quilt machine table all the time to show customers when they are
dropping off quilts! It will take a little while to educate them that these are
available but we will get there!
Thanks to Brenda Wade for taking the initiative to create
her new business that can only assist us all. www.widebacks.com.au
Will get you to her website so that you can also see what
she now has in stock and also ALL the machine quilters that are supporting her!

Hi everyone, can I add my thoughts on mentoring. Surely mentoring is to be of assistance in guiding a newcomer in areas that we too needed guidance when we first started out, whether it be supplier details, guidance with difficult quilts or just to be there to answer any querries and should not be confused with tutoring where we pay for someone to teach us their skills. I too have had many classes where I have been tutored and have paid for these services, but have appreciated any additional guidance I have received and am more than happy to be of assistance to a newbie.
Subject: [AMQA_Open_Discussion] Re: Mentoring program - longish
Hi Sally Thanks for your response to my (incorrectly sent) email. The mentoring program is not meant to take the place of the newbies taking classes and certainly is not something that is structured - it is more along the lines of providing support, not teaching. I too have spent a lot of time and money taking classes and working things through for myself, but sometimes it is nice to be able to ring someone, or email them, and say "what do you think"?. And, that is what we're trying to do here - help another machine quilter along.
I hope this helps,

I think it is what will make the Association grow... I am happy to be a mentor and my mentoree is from anotherr state so does not threaten my business. Although we are fairly new to it , she can ask questions that I ma happy to answer. Sometimes iT may be just a case of a mroe expereinced person saying.." I found that such and such a book helped ..
I agree it is not a subsitute for good business practice or proper training... but not everyone needs that. Some come from other buisness experience or are happy to learn how to quilt without classes( liekmany of us did).. but they will appreciate a one on one email exchange.
the good thing about it is it only needs to suit those who are happy to do it.

Hi all- at the risk of sounding like a miserable, mean old grouch -- I will put my ten cents worth in here! Is there anyione else out there who can see the problems with mentoring in this way?? Firstly, who amongst us really has the time - I'm flat out just trying to keep up, and yes, those of us who have been "doing this" for quite some time do have a wealth of expereince etc,
I can't see the problem - seems like a good idea to me.
I'm not sure how having a mentor would mean a beginner was somehow skipping a crucial stage of development. A mentor can't turn a beginner into super-quilter with a wave of a wand - the beginner still has to do all the things we all had to do to get our businesses going, they just get to talk to someone who has done all that stuff already and made it out the other side.
I don't think mentors are intended to replace training, workshops or practice - it's just another option to help beginners find their feet.

I have worked hard over the last 8 years to build up my business and establish clientele. Those of us from the "early days" did it the hard way and basically taught ourselves, and yes, passing on our expertise would benefit the whole industry, but what ever happened to "doing the apprenticeship" ? There are several very good longarmers who offer thier services as tutors - for a fee- and that would be money well spent. I have helped several fellow longarmers along the way, and was happy to do so, ( still am) but "nuturing along" by mentoring does not stand well with me - buying a machine and not investing in adequate training is not good business sense at all. Good morning again -
Well, its finally happened - my senior moments have gone very public, rather
than just staying at home where I can look silly by myself.
The email I sent this morning about the mentoring was supposed to go to
another list - instead I've sent it to the whole world. I'm sorry about the
confusion. The organised mentoring program is one of the benefits offered
to machine quilters when they join the AMQA - it really helps those newbies
who don't know anyone else, and as I said, can help the more experienced
quilters too.
So, if you're a member and want to be involved as either a mentor or
mentoree, please let me know. Those who aren't members I'm really sorry for
confusing and misleading you.

Hi everyone We have some more excitement coming our way (Helen & I) have just had an email this morning saying that we have been juried into the Houston Quilt Show as a finalist with Lace #2...... We won't get to this one though....just too many $$ and that darn long flight between here & there!
will get you to the organisations site to appreciate the scale of this show. I understand that it is absolutely huge, but I've never been there. Maybe some of our other members can chime in here & let us know more about this show. I'm pretty sure there are some that have been juried into this show before?? Belinda - have you done this one?

Just a quick note to let you know that I have updated the
AMQA website today to include some photos of the winners of the AMQE
(Australian Machine Quilters Exhibition) there and also to add a new page that
lists Quilt Shows around the country and overseas.
I have quickly put together a few that I could get details
on BUT I’m sure there are lots more!!! Please – if anyone has
information about upcoming quilt shows that they would like listed then please
email me the details so that they can go on there. This resource will be great
for the general public to find out where their local shows are and also on planning
holidays….
Not only that, if quilters would like to enter their quilts
in any shows then there are some links to visit to see all the details to do
so.

Tracey, congrats on your quilt getting through.
I have been to Houston and it was huge. It is held in a building rather
like the Darling Harbour set up - with the quilts at one end and the
shopping at the other, but enormous. They year I went, they had 22 aisles
of shopping (44 times up and down), with a centre aisle down the middle as
well. They had a mobile ATM in a little bus come into the building. They
had a whole section of the convention centre blocked off for the food/eating
section. And, then they had classes upstairs. The Hilton Americas is
attached to the building, so if you were lucky enough to get a room there,
you could go back to your room, recover and then head back. Kaye and Bruce
were there that year too and they had rooms in the Hilton.
Having been to both Paducah and Houston, I thought Paducah was better in
that you could get out of the one building and wander around the town, which
was all decorated in quilting stuff, but Houston's shopping was all in one
spot, so you couldn't miss any of the stalls.

Let me introduce Susan Moroney from Hampton Park Sth East Melbourne. Susan is excitedly awaiting the arrival of her new APQS Lenni and is making plans to setup a machine quilting business.
Susan, you no doubt have lots of questions you would like to ask, so fire away and don't be shy, there are lots of willing helpers in this group.
Happy machine quilting and best wishes in your new endeavour.
I arrived
home last night at 10.30pm after what I could only describe as a most fabulous
five-day visit to Melbourne. While I unpack and before I load-up the next quilt
I would like to take a moment to pass on my congratulations and thank yous.
Firstly I
want to say a huge thank you to Hermione Agee for hosting the Victorian Machine
Quilters’ Gathering in her home on Saturday and inviting us visitors from
interstate to attend. What a great day! No one could say that the gatherings in
Victoria suffer low attendance. It was standing room only in every room. I
enjoyed meeting some new faces and catching-up with people I hadn’t seen for
some time. Surprised and delighted to see Lori Neels again. Lori had travelled
all the way from New Zealand to tell us about their plans for a machine
quilting conference in 2008.
The rooms
were buzzing with conversations. There were several displays of products at the
suppliers’ tables, demonstration DVD’s were playing throughout the day and
people were doodling with Hermione’s machine to test out the great new backing
fabric now available from Wide Backs. I valued the opportunity to learn about
new products and some old products I had only heard about. The Show & Tell was
inspiring to say the least and I felt a valuable opportunity to answer some
‘calls for help’.
All in
all, a very friendly and happy day. Oh, and lunch was scrumptious, thank you.
From
Hermione’s at the foothills of outer Melbourne, I ventured back to town to meet
up with my good friend Sue W at THE Exhibition. (What a great idea to remain
open until 8pm on the Sat night, I must find out if Qld’s show has extended
hours?) That quiet evening time made our initial viewing of the Showcase and
the Exhibition so much more enjoyable and WOW what a show. All the entries in
both shows were fabulous quilts but the display of machine quilting, in
particular, was absolutely spectacular. There was not one quilt that didn’t
stop me in my tracks. I was compelled to stand for a time in front of every one
to amaze at the workmanship, the creativity, and just how clever the quilters
had been. Congratulations to all entrants and special congratulations to the
winners. I expect Melbourne will be talking about that Exhibition in glowing
terms for some time.
Special
congratulations to Desley Regan and a big thank you for your part in making the
Exhibition possible and ensuring a successful event. Also thanks for taking
good care of the quilts in transit.Thank you to Victorian Quilters Inc and in particular, Mary Hitchens,
for acting on Desley’s initiative and accepting the challenge to stage an
exhibition of Australian machine quilting.
Sunday I
returned to the Exhibition and Showcase to review the quilts for the second time.
I actually think I would have experienced the same enjoyment if I had viewed
the show several times over.
Sunday
night Wendy Watkins drove me out to her home in Bendigo where I enjoyed a
pleasant evening by the log fire and some great unwinding chitchat around the
machine in her studio at Honey Pot Quilting. Monday we visited Honeysuckle
Stained Glass and Patchwork shop to meet Nikki and Peter and then off to meet
Jody Abel at Daisy Patch Quilting. Jody has her studio set-up in a recycled
demountable school classroom, ingenious idea, lots of space and very practical.
Lovely to meet you Jody, thank you and thank you to Wendy and Leigh for your
kind hospitality, much appreciated.
Always
good to be home though and now I must get back to work.
Hi Pat
Your email made me wonder if I had mislead the various groups when I sent
out a request for help for sponsorship for the show. However I have just
been back through the messages to see that I was careful to highlight the
fact that the original request for sponsorship came from the Victorian
Quilters Inc.
Like you, in my mind I was thinking of the Australian Machine Quilter's
Exhibition show as the AMQA show. However I did know that it was an
exhibition for Machine Quilting that was being hosted and backed by the
Victorian Quilters Inc and that it was open to machine quilters from around
Australia without any requirement for them to be members of the Victorian
Quilters Inc Guild. This last point is very important as entries are not
accepted into the Victorian Quilters Showcase Exhibition unless both
parties, the top maker & the quilter, are members of Victorian Quilters Inc.
Here it should be noted that entry to AMQE was not limited to commercial
machine quilters, see the first 4 points below copied from the entry form:
1. Entry is open to all machine quilters - VQ members and non-members. 2.
All quilts entered must be machine quilted. Quilting can be done on any kind
of sewing machine - such as domestic, short or long arm. 3. The quilting
must have been done by one person. 4. It is the quilter who is eligible to
enter the quilt into this exhibition regardless of others involved in the
making of the quilt, or who owns the quilt.
Another point that may not be common knowledge is that the Australian
Machine Quilters Exhibition was launched at the Australian Council of
Quilters Conference in Perth in February where it was accepted by all the
state Representatives who also offered to promote it to their members. So
although the exhibition is held in Melbourne it is supported by all the
State Patchwork Guilds around Australia.
I do not know if AMQA had a representative at the Australian Council of
Quilters.
However, when people contacted me in response to my call for help with
sponsorship we discussed the fact that my request related to the Australian
Machine Quilters Exhibition and that I thought that, as an industry, we
should sponsor this first exhibition that was dedicated to machine quilting.
Everyone who responded to my call nominated which category, of those that
remained un-sponsored, that they wished to support. As you will have noted,
there were 4 major prizes - Best of Show, Best Computerised, Best Custom &
Best Edge to Edge. Best of Show had been sponsored by Expertise Events and
Best Custom Quilting (including Wholecloth) was sponsored by the Australian
Machine Quilting Association.
The prize money for the Best Computerised & Best Edge to Edge categories was
raised by the combined sponsorship of 9 businesses from around Australia,
and Canada, who are quilters and /or suppliers to the machine quilting
industry. Further sponsorship was given by other machine quilter/suppliers
for the highly commended & runner up categories.
In some cases the people who offered sponsorship had also entered quilts in
the exhibition and had offered the sponsorship because they wished to help
make this first exhibition, that was dedicated to machine quilting, a
success. There was no conflict of interest in being an entrant and a sponsor
as the sponsors were not involved in the judging.
As a final personal comment I felt that the distinction between the
Victorian Showcase Exhibition and the Australian Machine Quilters Exhibition
was not very clear when you were viewing the quilts. I had been looking at
the quilts for quite some time before I realised that there were several
banners marking the area in which the AMQE quilts were displayed. The same
could be said about the various Art Quilt Exhibitions that were displayed
around the side walls ... it was not always clear where one group finished
and the next started. However issues like this can, & I am sure will, be
addressed in future exhibitions.
As Desley has already said, she had no idea of the work involved in
organising an exhibition of this calibre and that she was so very
appreciative of the help and support she received from the Victorian
Quilters Inc. I am not sure how many machine quilters helped Desley in
coordinating, setting up, taking down and return shipping of the quilts but
she certainly deserves a big cheer for getting the inaugural dedicated
exhibition up and running. Like all these events they can only get better as
areas of improvement are identified and more helping hands are offered.
Oops, sorry this ended up being such a long email but I did feel that I
should clarify the sponsorship call.
Regards
Jenny Scott

Was never mentioned, I personally think misleading or ambiguous
statements or misinturpreting statements is not dishonesty...I dont
expect you will hear any of the comments I heard throughtout the
event, because frankly people say alot of stuff, but dont want to come
forward and point a finger because they need to network and stay
friends with everybody, personally I would rather say what I feel
and dont need to be friends with anybody..and I do it so
well.....for business reason it is in your better interest to stay
neutral and network, it keeps your business ticking over...what
becomes of the AMQA's show when every other State guild decide to
host one of these exhibitions in conjuction with their showcase(are
they going to sponsor them all????)(I think not)..but I am sure the
AMQA will figure out something!!
I know I rub alot of people the wrong way Hermione but all I can say
is I would rather front the subject than whinge behind peoples
back..or pussy foot around..its the way I am.
I also feel quilts should not cross the borders, NSW should have NSW
quilts etc..why join every guild just to show quilts..I personally
think that is not what its all about either..like the best of show
awards..if a quilt does the circquet(sp) of every state and is best
of show every show it should recieve the accolades, but it doesnt,it
can only win once I think, so why wouldnt you want to win your own
states show???again this is only my humble opinion, but I did discuss
this with a vic white glove lady who agreed strongly with that
point???bet she didnt tell anybody down there..sorry if I have
opened a can of worms, but I feel this sort of stuff needs to be
sorted...cheers Pat
What a wonderful four days in Melbourne!
The exhibition of machine quilting was inspirational to say the
least. A big thank you to Desley for all her work, both with the
committee and behind the scenes. We are certainly fortunate to have
Desley representing our interests with Vicquilters.
Congratulations to all the winners and to all those who supported the
exhibition to ensure that it did not slip off the radar.
I went to the exhibition for two days and was in awe. When I did my
stint of white gloving I had to beat back the touchers near Mariya
Waters' quilt. An outstanding piece of work. Tina's quilt certainly
received the exhibition display space it deserved. I loved hearing
the comments about the back of her quilt.
Thank you to Hermione for organising and hosting Saturday's GTG. What
a calm hostess. The kitchen crew were wonderful. Thank you also to
Jenny Scott and Tracy Browning for bringing their wares along. Much
better than a stall at the craft market at Jeff's Shed.
It was great to meet up with Wendy, Vanessa, Pat, Madge and Barb and
to put faces to so many other names. But we all want to know, Wendy,
how did the dancing go?
I have not even opened the door to my workshop. Have been away from
my machine for three weeks - a holiday then back for Melbourne.
Worried that I might have to thrash through the cobwebs to reach it!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to a big few days.

The Association was a major sponsor of the Exhibition, not the organiser. The Exhibition is open to quilters from all over Australia, it just happens to be run by Vic Quilters because they have the resources and enthusiasm to get a show like this up and running.
I'm sorry you feel people were mislead. I never got that impression and on reading through the show-related emails I can't see anything that suggested the Association was anything other than a sponsor. Desley was very clear that it was an Australian machine quilters show, open to all the states, run by Vic Quilters. All the emails talk about Vic Quilters rules, the handbook is the Vic Quilters handbook from the Vic Quilters website, the rules page is headed with "Victorian Quilters proudly present...", and the entry form says "Victorian Quilters Inc Australian Machine Quilters Exhibition".
Perhaps the confusion arose from the similar initials? AMQA for the Association and AMQE for the Exhibition.
You said some of the sponsors may have been mislead - what do mean exactly? I was a sponsor and it seemed perfectly clear to me. I was asked if I wanted to sponsor a portion of the prizes for the Australian Machine Quilters Exhibition - sounded like a great idea to me so I said yes. How would I have been mislead?
I was thrilled with Vic Quilters' willingness to jump in and get a machine quilters exhibition up and running and in all my dealings with them they were enthusiastic and energetic in their attempts to make the Exhibition great. The Association fronted up the cash for a major prize because the Association exists to raise the profile of machine quilters in Australia and this was a great way to do that. In my opinion, a misunderstanding on your part does not equate to the dishonesty of either the Exhibition or the Association in "misleading" the public or the sponsors.
Hey Belinda, Thanks for stating it was the brown floored quilt that won, when we got there on friday there where no rosettes on the winners, guess because there where two and they only had one ribbon,I was very confused, the next thing I am very confused about is who acutally owed that show..I was under the impression that the AMQA owned it and sponsored it, now I find the Victorians own it and its not the AMQA's show, I know several messages on several groups stated it was the AMQE inconjuction with the Vic Showcase...next time could somebody hit me between the eyes with a lump of 4x2 and explain that it was nothing to do with the Australian Machine Quilters Association and I wouldn't have busted a gut to finish and enter another states show..sorry to be the one to express this but I also feel some of the sponsors that hopped on the AMQA's band wagon may have been mislead also. But having said that, when the AMQA has their own show please give us plenty of notice of your intention and some more outstanding quilts may appear.
Lori Neels announced that a machine quilters conference will be held in New Zealand next year and we are all invited....and Belinda she was also calling for tutors, you can email her at quilt@quiltque.co.nz thats according to her business card she handed out.....best go know and clean up the studio find some quilts to attack..cyas Pat

The AMQE will definitely be continuing. I am hoping it will get bigger every year, and am working towards this along with Vic Quilters. I have to say, the committee of Vic Quilters have been amazing. They have been so supportive when I came to them with the idea for a Machine Quilting Show, and they have done so much work to bring it all about. Having now seen a show from the 'other' side I realise there is so much involved - much more than I first imagined.
Congratulations on your prize and your quilt is stunning. I hope you are thinking about next year's entry......
Good morning, I was very excited to hear from Mary about one of my quilts winning a prize, and sharing first is great. The quilt that won is the brown one that went to Paducah - and would probably be the most technically perfect quilt that I have ever quilted on - it gave me the cold shivers just putting the first stitch in!!
So, thanks to Desley for doing all the hard yards, and for taking in the quilts, and to Hermione for sending out the list. And congrats to everyone else who won and those who entered. I think it's great that we finally have had a show section just for machine quilting, seeing as how there aren't any more conferences. I hope it continues.
