Hello to all of you,
I have just received a call from a lady ringing on behalf of her son
who has a couple of beautiful white male rats that were rescued from
being snake feed. They are about one year old and are happy and
healthy. They run up and down their current owners legs, sit on his
shoulders, go out to places with him etc, etc, etc.
Sadly the owner is going overseas in about a months time and so these
animals need to find a new home. Sadly, nobody they know are
interested in taking these lil fellas on.
Rats are friendly social animals and make great companions. Can
anyone help?? If you can email me @
glendas_bunny_rescue@... Feel free to forward this email
onto anyone you think may be able to help. Area is western Sydney.
Cheers,
Glenda the good witch
Hi, my name is Jessy. I just joined up here after recieving some
wonderful advice from Rebekah about a mouse I thought was pregnant.
Well as it turns out...she is. I'm expecting little baby mice any day
now. If anyone is near the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area and would be
interested in taking one or two of the babies atfer they're weened
I'll make a follow up post after about a week after she gives birth
to state how many there are.

i noticed some strange behavior in my new pet rat. i introduced him
to another about 3 weeks ago, and they are doing fine. i can see and
it is obvious that the one i had before is bigger and he seems to be
the dominant out of the two. so the littler one is very submissive to
him. tonight i was playing with him like i usually do, and he went on
to his back and it almost looked like he was baring his teeth. he
attempted to bite a few times, but all he did is put his teeth on my
finger and didn't bite with any pressure. he didn't really move alot,
he just layed there, but he had a weird look on his face, i was
almost scared he was going to bite hard. i wanted to know if this is
a sign of aggressive behavior or if it was just him being submissive
to me.
thanks

Hi,
My name is Melissa and I come from Melbourne,Australia.
Well I love rats. My only rat called Spice just died from old age on
Monday Dec 2nd this year. I will be getting 2 rats by XMAS. They are
new borns at the moment. Gonna get 2 females.
I really miss Spice, she was so beautiful. She was like a
ginger/brownish colour and had the greatest temperment around. I had
her trained well and she loved to sit on my shoulder all the time.
She will live on in my heart forever.
I will post more to you when I have stories on my new rats
Please take care
Melissa
I would love to help,
my only problem is that I do not have any hutches to keep them in.
If they cme with donated homes, I could take up to 20.
I live in Bayswater North Victoria, ustralia - and do not drive -
just a few drawbacks there - ut i have 13 years experience with rats
as pets.
sincerely,
Rebekah
Hello,
We're in desperate need of good homes as we are currently getting
phone calls daily from shelters, pounds etc wanting to give us their
rodents and rabbits who are on death row. At the moment I am unable
to take any more animals on until we start to rehome at least a few.
If you can help or know anyone who may be able to help in some way
(even being a foster carer is a huge help!) please get in contact
with me. Pass the links on to everyone you know.

Thank you very kindly Megan,
I must thank you for your intelligent and very helpful replies to
member questions while I was abcent having my second child.
It seems that you kept the club alive while I was gone. I have been
reading your replies and you seem a very educated person.
I am pleased that the AMRIS homepage has proved helpful.
Those Vivisection photos are very hard on the heart indeed. I had
never imagined that it could get as ugly as that when I first saw
them.
Keep up your work, it is wonderful to have you inside this club.
merry humane christmas to you,
Rebekah.
Yes, male mice do have a wonderful tangy odour.
A couple of female mice would be better suited to indoor living.
However, male rats have far less odour than either male or female
mice.
All, however, make equally as good pets.
My two hooded are very different in size also. My female is about one third
smaller than my male. I have no idea how old they are as they were rescued from
a teenage boy who didn't want them anymore. His father was going to use them for
pistol practice if I didn't take them in. I've had them both for just over a
year now and She is about the same size as he was when I got them both whereas
he has grown very quickly. I just put it down to genetics.

PS I'll post some more pics of them soon

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I fried my modem.
Today Tonight had a story on a rental tennent who had pet rats and when he was
asked to leave the house, he left the rats behind. The poor little things did
what comes naturally and before too long there were hundreds of rats. It was so
sad to watch they all looked scared and hungry. How anyone could have let their
rats go like that is beyond me. I hope they find him and charge him under the
RSPCA laws. Most of the rats looked as if they were hooded rats. (Like my 2).
Anyway the story pretty much focused on the "disease carrying vermin" and "why
would anyone have so many" and "The whole neighbourhood is suffering from this
infestation" I don't think they realised just how easy it is for rats to breed
when left to it.
Again sorry it took so long for me to reply.

I don't know if it should be a concern for you Shael that your rats
are different sizes - maybe someone out there knows.
But I have 2 brothers (6 mths old) & one has always been bigger than
the other, ever since I got them at 6 weeks. They were weighed
yesterday & one's about 300g & the other's about 400g. I've never
worried about it, but if your younger one hasn't grown AT ALL I
imagine that's a problem.

I'm from Vic!
Has anyone head of sunflower seeds causing rats skin problems in high
doses? I heard this from a vet but I hadn't read it in any of my rat
books.
Is anyone here going to the Dandenong show this weekend?

please reply quickly as they are going fast.
Sharon,
Our rats are constantly grooming each other, but if it seems too excessive it
might be an idea to separate them for a short time (2 weeks or so). Put them in
separate cages next to each other. That way they can still talk to each other
with the constant grooming and you will be able to tell if that is the cause of
the hair loss.
Good luck

zealous grooming from his brother, as I've seen his brother looking like he's
chewing on his hair in that exact spot!
He never itches the spot (though he does scratch other bits of himself
- how often does a healthy rat itch itself I wonder??). The skin looks
fine, it's not red or scaly or sore & there are no other patches on his

Has anyone else had rats giving their siblings bad hair cuts?
Should I take him to the vet for a check up?
Thanks,
Sharon.

Hi Dwayne,
There's a breeder in Glen Waverley who breeds hairless mice. Her
name's Erin Smith and her e-mail address is erinsmith_@...
I'm not sure about obese mice...are they a breed or are they just
fat? :)
Megan
Hi Theresa,
You can also buy a horse worming paste product called "Equimec". It
costs about $18 for a tube. You put a rice grain sized amount on a
que-tip (Sp?) and dab it on the rats mouth. You do this once a week
for three weeks and then once every three months after that to make
sure they never get them back. What sort of bedding do you have the
rats on?
Kind Regards,
Megan
A vet can give your rats an injection that should clear up the mites
completely - at least, it worked on mine. It might be best to get
both rats injected even if the mites are only apparent on one, as
they could still be around, just not visible (the injection should
last long enough to kill any mites that are left).

Hello....
Ok so I started out with my rat Dewey and she was so amazing I
really wanted another rat. A friend of mine works at PETCO and they
sell feeder rats and she had one in particular that she loved and
wanted to see saved so I took him in. Well after a week of having
him I noticed that he had........GASP!.......mites and that he had
also passed them to Dewey. I cleaned and THOROUGHLY bleached their
cages, the walls around their cages and the floor. I also bathed
them with a mite shampoo and that seemed to take care of the
problem. Well I went away last week and came back (my sis ratty sat
for me) and the mites had come back!!!! (It has been 3 weeks sionce
the first incident) but this time they are only in Huey's cage (not
deweys) I feel so bad that this has happened to Huey and Dewey and I
am completely grossed out! I gave them mite baths and did the whole
bleaching thing again but it didn't fix the problem last time. If
ANYONE has any advice i would GREATLY appreciate it!! HELP ME!!
THANKS!

Hi Glenda,
There's a Rodent Trader on the NSW Fancy Rat & Mouse Club web site:
http://pluto.beseen.com/boardroom/w/56040/
I got quite a few responses out of that when I put my own ad there and
I'm sure the fact that these rats are ex-labarotory will catch a lot
of people's attention. Good luck with finding them homes!
Megan
Hello all, I'm new to this email group and I live in western Sydney,
NSW.
I started a rabbit rescue program about a month ago and it's kinda
changed to a rabbit and rodent rescue program!
I need to find homes for approximately 56 ex-laboratory rats. They
need some love and affection after being used in psychology
experiments in a university. They will be rescued next week. They
were going to be destroyed, and don't worry, I will be sending a
letter to them regarding the experiment and telling them that they
should consider not conducting the experiment at all in the future!
If you know of anyone in Sydney area (or thereabouts) interested in
taking a rat or two in or if you know anyone or anywhere where I can
advertise, send me an email!!
cheers,
Glenda
Thanks heaps Karen,
That's reassured me!!!! Not sure how Malachi would
like the upside down technique but I might try it if it happens again
& they aren't stopping.

Sharon :)

To Rebecca and all!
Thought you might be interested to know that I used the information on
the Photographic Exhibition of Vivisection as the main focus of a
point-of-view piece in an English SAC for Yr 12 English. I wasn't
going to write about such a grizzly subject at first, but then I
realised that one of the reasons the issue hasn't been dealt with
publicly is becoz people don't want to see or hear about such barbaric
practices simply becoz they are upsetting and so the issue
inadvertently gets swept under the rug. So I've written it and am
waiting with interest to see what the panel of english teachers at my
school has to say about it as it's a very contraversial issue!
Also, I just read your article on male rats and would like to say that
it is very well written! I absolutely love male rats - sorry girls,
but when it comes to the rat world, I'm sexist! Don't get me wrong, I
like females, I have three girls and 1 boy, but the males are just so
fun-loving and giving and less heart breaking, because they don't get
much wrong with them medically. When you buy a female rat, you expect
mammary tumours, but when you get a male rat, you accept the
possibility that maybe, just maybe, he might get an aggression problem
and need to be neutered (hey presto! all fixed!) or he may get back
leg paralysis as an old guy, but nothing too heart wrenching. Oh, and
the other thing is that a male rat smells GREAT! Some days they smell
slightly pepperminty, other days they smell like warm toast. Their
personalities are less mature than females too. A female rat may be
playful while she's young, but they tend to wise up once they're full
grown, whereas a male rat never loses his playfulness. Right up until
old age he's still playing tag with you and getting the silly's when
you tickle him. He respects your property more than a female - if you
give him things to chew in his cage and give him a little nudge when
he investigates your clothes a bit too much, he gets the point and
rarely destroys anything. A female on the other hand might appear to
get the point when your watching her, but leave the room and you'll
come back to find your bedspread suddenly has some attractive
ventilation holes in it and that $500 bonus cheque from work is
sitting in neat little pieces on your desk.
Also, isn't it nice to have your affectionate little bloke tucked
lovingly under your chin bruxing while you're watching TV instead of
hopping around the loungeroom yelling because Madam Claws is
scrabbling her way down the flesh of your back with glee in between
romping around the couch having a great time?!
Ahh...I love male rats :)
Megan
Hiya!
I have absolutely no idea about guinea pigs, but I recently did a
little bit of research for a friend of mine who has two guinea pigs
for her kids and I found this great site called AllExperts:
http://www.allexperts.com/getExpert.asp?Category=1574
It's got e-mail addresses of people you can e-mail for advice on your
guinea pigs - I'm sure you could get some answers to your questions
there.

Hi Guys,
Does anyone know whether rats get hiccups? My rat just looked like he
was having them. He was sitting there & sort of twitching & looked
uncomfortable. They went away & he seems fine now.
Regards,
Sharon.
Hello! Can someone please help me. My whole human family has been
sick (the flu) for over 2 weeks now and then last night my beloved 6
month old guinea decided she was very very tired and she started
sneezeing. Although the sneezeing has let up she does not seem to
want to do anything but sleep.
Can guinea pigs catch a cold from humans? If so, what can I do for
her and what is the best food to feed an unwell guinea?
I have 2 guinea's. They pretty much live inside, although on dry days
they do go outside onto the grass, in a special cage?
My dear little guinea's - named - guinea aged 9 months and nibbles
aged 6 months would greatly love never to get sick again.
