We have three male rats.  We've had the oldest for some time now and
he is one of the calmest, sweetest rats we have ever owned.  We got
two new, young rats mid way thru last year and now the oldest of these
two has reached full adult hood and is trying to be the dominant male.
  The problem is that the old rat doesn't know how to defend himself
and comes away from fights with deep cuts all over his body while the
aggressor walks away with no more than a slightly chipped claw.  The
aggressor is now in a cage by himself and is very lonely.  We want to
put them all back together but we don't know how to stop the fights.

Can anyone help?

Anything would be appreciated.

I'm usure what you mean by rat tubs, but I get all my ratty supplies from the
pet shop in Sydney Road Fawkner. I'm not sure of the name of it, but the shop is
situated on the left hand side heading toward the city, right between Mahoneys
Road and the M80. Just be warned they also have a lot of reptiles that I'm sure
are fed the rats that we don't buy.

Hope someone here can help.  My kids have 3 pet mice (all supposed
to be males).  about a month ago a house mouse found it's way into
their tank two nights running (yuk).  Anyway notice one mouse
getting very fat then two nights ago "he" gave birth to heeps of
mice.
The dilema is:    These mice are half house mice/half pet mice.
What are the complications.  I've rung the pet shop who will take
back all the babies but I haven't told them that the father is a
house mouse?   What should I do.  People have said just drown them
but I could never do that.    Help   By the way all three pet mice
are female and not male as told when purchased.

Thanks heaps for your reply & my apologies for taking so long to thank you.

I'm having trouble finding where to buy the non-lethal traps. Bunnings don't
have them - any ideas? The mice are now getting into my oven, so I might
have to go the lethal method if I can't find those other types. I would
never use poison - I agree it's too cruel.

About releasing them, there's a tip down the road so that's kinda handy. Are
you saying the mice that live in my house are adapted to live in houses &
can't survive outside a house? (Sounds kind of amusing to me since they're
wild!).

Loved your story about the tame rat eating the wild one!! I'd be worried the
wild ones would give the tame ones diseases they're not immune to.
Fortunately nothing can get into my rats cage.

Dear Sarah,

All animals have a different smell to them, you can improve the smell of
them by keeping their living space clean and tidy, but they are always going
to have some sort of "animal smell".  I have many rabbits and guniea pigs
and I have never noticed any offensive smell, however, other people seem to
have a more sensitive nose when it comes to animals than I do.

If the smell of Squeak is particularly strong it could be the materials in
his living quarters that are impacting on this.  What do you keep Squeak in
and where do you keep him ?  I don't think it's a good idea to bathe Squeak
too often, but it could be his living area that is making his smell
stronger, or even what you are using to bathe him in.  I keep my guinea pigs
in a large open area enclosure with some rabbits and there is lots of straw
and hay for them to hide under.  All I seem to smell is straw!

I don't think I've really helped you at this stage Sarah, but give us more
info on little Squeak and where he lives and hopefully we can help you more.

Is Squeak your first guinea pig ?

I have just received a call from a lady ringing on behalf of her son
who has a couple of beautiful white male rats that were rescued from
being snake feed.  They are about one year old and are happy and
healthy.  They run up and down their current owners legs, sit on his
shoulders, go out to places with him etc, etc, etc.

Sadly the owner is going overseas in about a months time and so these
animals need to find a new home.  Sadly, nobody they know are
interested in taking these lil fellas on.

Rats are friendly social animals and make great companions.  Can

Hi, my name is Jessy. I just joined up here after recieving some
wonderful advice from Rebekah about a mouse I thought was pregnant.
Well as it turns out...she is. I'm expecting little baby mice any day
now. If anyone is near the Pittsburgh Pennsylvania area and would be
interested in taking one or two of the babies atfer they're weened
I'll make a follow up post after about a week after she gives birth

i noticed some strange behavior in my new pet rat. i introduced him
to another about 3 weeks ago, and they are doing fine. i can see and
it is obvious that the one i had before is bigger and he seems to be
the dominant out of the two. so the littler one is very submissive to
him. tonight i was playing with him like i usually do, and he went on
to his back and it almost looked like he was baring his teeth. he
attempted to bite a few times, but all he did is put his teeth on my
finger and didn't bite with any pressure. he didn't really move alot,
he just layed there, but he had a weird look on his face, i was
almost scared he was going to bite hard. i wanted to know if this is
a sign of aggressive behavior or if it was just him being submissive
to me.

Well I love rats. My only rat called Spice just died from old age on
Monday Dec 2nd this year.  I will be getting 2 rats by XMAS. They are
new borns at the moment.  Gonna get 2 females.
I really miss Spice, she was so beautiful. She was like a
ginger/brownish colour and had the greatest temperment around. I had
her trained well and she loved to sit on my shoulder all the time.
She will live on in my heart forever.

Yes, male mice do have a wonderful tangy odour.

A couple of female mice would be better suited to indoor living.

However, male rats have far less odour than either male or female
mice.


All, however, make equally as good pets.

My two hooded are very different in size also. My female is about one third
smaller than my male. I have no idea how old they are as they were rescued from
a teenage boy who didn't want them anymore. His father was going to use them for
pistol practice if I didn't take them in. I've had them both for just over a
year now and She is about the same size as he was when I got them both whereas
he has grown very quickly. I just put it down to genetics.

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I fried my modem.
Today Tonight had a story on a rental tennent who had pet rats and when he was
asked to leave the house, he left the rats behind. The poor little things did
what comes naturally and before too long there were hundreds of rats. It was so
sad to watch they all looked scared and hungry. How anyone could have let their
rats go like that is beyond me. I hope they find him and charge him under the
RSPCA laws. Most of the rats looked as if they were hooded rats. (Like my 2).
Anyway the story pretty much focused on the "disease carrying vermin" and "why
would anyone have so many" and "The whole neighbourhood is suffering from this
infestation" I don't think they realised just how easy it is for rats to breed
when left to it.
