Hi there...
My girlfriend and I recently bought two mice and a mouse house. We
decided on the weekend to get a bigger house (it's palatial!), and,
eventually, a couple more mice (all female). The cage we bought was
actually a birdcage, so there were no shelves for the mice to enjoy
multi-level living. I was just wondering whether anyone knew how to
get hold of that black plastic-coated wire tray material they use to
make the shelves...I've called the pet shops, but they only have the
ready-made cages, not separate components. On a separate note, one of
the mice we bought (we got them a week ago) is really skittish - the
other one runs up to you when you come into the room and can't stay
away, whereas the nervous one won't come out of the corner. We bought
them both from the same place, and they're both quite young. Is there
a way to train them not to be nervous, or is it just part of their
personality?
Okay..I know that Julie of Mad Ratter Rattery takes in rescues - I think I've
seen her on here as well, but she hasn't
replied so I'm not sure if she is paying attention to the list.
Her website is: http://www.themadratter.com.au/ and her email is on the front
page - so drop
her an email :)
Due to the sheer volume of rescues that are around, she might not be able to
take in your rats,
but she might know of suitable homes and should be able to help you.

2 black, 6 month old male rats that i can't take care of anymore due
to circumstances beyond my control that have arisen recently. i have
tried for several months to look for new owners but to no avail.

hey there!
i just joined this group. I only have one rat and her name is Syphillis.
the thing is i have no clue how old she is and so i dont know how big she's
going to be and i'd like to know. her body is probably about 4 or 5 inches
long. so how big do rats get? i guess is my question.

My rat, female, has a skin problem and i was wondering if anyone
knew what it is, or if they can help.
While i was moving from home, I gave a friend my rat to look after.
I don't think she was very well looked after as the cage stank and
there were armonds all through her nest. She started developing
scabs around her neck and sholders while she was there. when i got
her back it was so bad that i cleaned her whole cage throughly,
disinfecting it, washing it down so she couldn't die of piosion. It
seemed to clear up for a while but now it has come back.
The scabs aren't bleeding, and they're are bright red, and clean.
she's always cleaning herself and scratching.
could it be diet? she eats dried fruit, lettice, apples, (any
veggies and fruit) and dried biscuits.
other than her skin, she is a very active, alert, intelligent and
sociable rat.
Does anyone know what it is? and how too cure it?
p.s I've serched her fur an found no ticks or fleas.
Thank you to the Australian Rat Fanciers Society's Dana Topliss for
reading out AMRIS's letter seekin links and information experts for
this club.
It was read at their Febuary 9th meeting.
As a result, AMRIS is looking forward to Ms Julie McInnes joining us
online, to help advise members inside this club on rat care and
responsible breeding.
Julie is AusRFS Breeders Representative and also deals with unwanted
domestic rats by helping to find homes for pet rats which cannot be
kept by their owners.
We've been told that soon Julie will be linking this club to her own
website, and I certainly hope she places a link to hers inside the
LINKS section of this club.
Thanks Julie,

If you're the sort of person who squeals and jumps up on a chair when
you see a rat or a mouse, then this buisness enterprise is not for
you.
Paul McManus is perhaps Australia's only full-time large-scale
breeder of rodents. He has about 5000 of them in a galvanised-iron
clad, concrete floor shed on his property on South Australia's Yorke
Peninsula.
It all began just over a year ago when as a pet shop owner, Paul
couldn't get enough rats and mice to feed his snakes and lizards.
Other reptile breeders had similar complaints.
Most of the rodents they fed were surplus laboratory mice, and with
those you just had to take whatever was left over.
The other source of rodents were backyard breeders and catchers and
with those you could never be assured they were disease free and
had'nt been in contact with poison.
So, with the help of a federal government grant through the new
enterprise incentive scheme (NEIS) Paul McManus established SA
RODENTS.
He breeds between 500 to 1000 creatures a week, but would soon like
to build up to 4000 a week. Any surplusto demand are kept in deep
freezers.
He admit's it's a lot of hard work and not everyones cup of tea,
but at this stage the buisness is about breaking even.

hi
Where abouts in Sydney are you?
As for sexing there are some really good sites online
to help. I know I got fooled too. I bought a baby girl
for our so-called other female who turned out male.
Fortunately, they were separated from the start as we
thought the older one had mites. So they are still
separated.
Here is a good site which may help with sexing.

Let me know how you go & I'll see if I can take a
guinea pig from you if hubby lets me :)

Anyway, while we would love

A: want a baby guinea pig or a 6 month sow suitable
for breeding?
B: know an easier way of sexing them or can recommend
a vet who specialises

I think ideally we would like to keep on of the males

Winston. Has anyone tried pairing a mature boar with a
younger one?

Hi all,
My bunny bubs are looking for homes.
They have been hand reared as they were orphaned.
One is about 7 weeks old (the black baby bunny) and I have named her
Avalon.
The other is nearly 4 weeks old and still on milk feeds, Topaz is
her name (new owners can/will of course choose their own names).
I can't keep them unfortunately so am looking for homes for them in
the Melbourne, (Australia) area.
As they were hand reared, and have been handled so much, and kept
indoors with me, they are both extremely tame and friendly.
I'll get back soon to describe their emerging personalities and tell
a little more about these two gorgeous bunny babes.
But for now if anyone is interested or knows someone who may be
interested please email me privately at angiecare@... for
more details.

Bernie,
My girls also prefer to sit on my chest (between my breasts) but I
don't have the problem of them scratching it up.
As for keeping the toenails trim, put some sandpaper in thier home on a
shelf or ramp that they use frequently. I has kept out girls nails
trimed and polished.
