Hi guys,

I have a human partner who is a very naughty boy...lol...
He lets our Ratties free range all over the house where they can get
up to all sorts of mischief...like chew thru phone lines, demolish
clothing, get in behind the stove etc....hmmmmm very naughty boy.
Anyway....any good advise on how i can deal with this
situation?....i tried the old "its not safe for the rats" routine
and that didnt work....i even tried the " its a costly venture
letting them demolish everything" and that didnt work
either....so.....any suggestions as to how i can...maybe scare him
into being more responsible???

KNOWS about rats! I live in Elwood [Melbourne].

My 9 month old rat Ollie has had a depressed appetite for about 2
weeks. He doesn't have any other symptoms. He has been to the vet -
but they are just guessing. I have Deb Ducommun's Rat Health Care
booklet.
He has been on Baytril for about 3 days [no help], then
amoxicillin for 4.5 days [seemed to help at first, then he got
worse].Now he's on Baytril and doxycycline. He's had 2 doses, but
seems worse. It is harder and harder to tempt him to eat. He stays
in bed mostly, but is still pretty active when he comes out of his
cage. I don't know what to do! I love him and I don't want to lose
him. Please help!

My 6 rats sleep in their litter tray...lol....and so i guess they pee in
that too...mind you they do sleep other places and dont pee there...my
suggestion is where ever you have their bed is where they associate
peeing....so try putting their bed in another corner or space and put a
litter tray where they normally pee
As for biting...you can stop that......my girls have learnt the word.....
NO.....you have to say it firmly when ever they do something wrong....and
reward them when they are good...its the same as training a dog....Rats are
extremely smart......one thing i did find is the more rats you have the
easier it is to train them.....my 6 learn from each other.
i hope that helps....if i can be of any other help let me know...smile

my girls really are very good......but they do get up to mischief too....but
i just have a laugh along with them....dont let them get away with
murder...but let them have some fun too....smile

Question- My rat Juna bites aggresivly, is she just a mean rat, or is there

You should go to Google and type in "collective nouns" - there's a bunch of
sites with the names for groups of different animals. Most of them say it's
a pack of rats. Cheers!

a few weeks ago my rat developed an issue of protruding penis. The
vet did a procedure to fix that problem. She put a stitch in to
keep it in place, the stitch was self-desolving. She had put an E-
collar on him and when I got him home and settled in I notice his
head was swollen(?). I removed the E-collar and the procedure she
performed is successful. But ever since this his back foot had
swollen. I took him to a different vet because he had also quit
eating any solid food that had to be chewed. He had lost 2 ounces
and was dehydrated even he was taking in fluid. The 2nd vet was
suspicious of trauma being the problem with his foot. He was
supposed to have been sedated during the penis procedure but I am
having serious doubts about that now. The 2nd vet gave him an
injection of dexamthasone on advice of the RatLady. Plus he was
placed on amoxcillin as a precaution against possible infection. A
week later no improvement... went back and they rehydrated him and
gave him and injection of Baytril and more for me to give him orally
at home. Two weeks later still no improvement. He will only eat
macarone and cheese strained baby food with dry oatmeal baby cereal
mixed with it but NOT to the consistency that it needs to be chewed.
He will eat a small piece of the Krafts cheese slices. Less than a
1/2" square piece. Now all his feet look swollen. His elimination
processes seem to be functioning fine. It is NOT bumblefoot. No
respiratory infection. Does anyone have any clue as to what could be
the problem? He goes back to the vet Monday Oct 4,2004. I wanted to
glean any info I could that may help the vet in their prognosis. The
vet is recommending blood test and sedation to use a mouth speculum
to check inside the mouth for problems. I am deeply concerned about
this because he is not in a strong physical state at this time. The
vets feel none of this is age related as he is at half his normal
lifespan for his specie. Help?

International demo in Geneva- Switzerland
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

RBM - Marxer is an Italian laboratory which has been performing
experiments on animals for more than 30 years.

NoRBM is the name of a Campaign that a group of people are carrying
on,
in order to stop these cruel and useless experiments.

Serono, a multinational pharmaceutical company which has its main
offices in Geneva, now in practice is the RBM's "owner", because it
owns almost the 97% of RBM's shares.
Without Serono, RBM would have been closed down years ago, and the
animals in its laboratories wouldn't have been suffering and killed.

Serono is RBM's unique and last stockholder!

****************************
Don't miss the international demo against the vivisection
experiments financed by Serono! 30 October 2004, Geneva, Switzerland.
****************************

Meeting point: Rue du Mont Blanc, near the railway station, 2 p.m.

Let's Serono and the whole city of Geneva know how many people say
NO to VIVISECTION!

Further info: http://www.norbm.org/rbmvivisection

Please, spread the news all over the world.

Thank you.

The demo is organized by the Swiss antivivisection organization ATRA.

Dear friends,

probably many of you already know the Italian antivivisection
campaign "Close down Morini" - where Morini is a farm which has been
selling animals to vivisection laboratories (dogs and rodents) for
more than 30 years. You can find info about the campaign on the
website: http://www.morinicampaign.tk

Anyway, we are now here to ask your help for a specific purpose: now
it's the time to make a STRONG pressure on the Mayor of S. Polo
d'Enza, the small town where the farm is located. Why? Well, let's
take a few steps back... two years ago, thanks to the huge protests
from the public opinion all over Italy, horrified by the use of
young beagle dogs in the vivisection laboratories, the Emilia
Romagna Regional Council approved a regional law stating that "cats
and dogs cannot be sold and used for experiments all over the
region". This law has caused a lot of problems to the Morini farm,
because its main income came from selling the dogs, more than
rodents or any other animal, to the laboratories.

But the vivisectors pressured the national Italian Government, so
the judgement of the validity of this law has been submitted to
the "Constitutional Court". The Court has been examining the case
for more than one year, during which time fortunately the law has
been applied, and the farm has not been authorized to sell dogs to
the vivisectors.

Few weeks ago came the result of the Court examination: a bad
result, because they decided that the law is not valid - they said
that a single
region cannot decide on this matter.

But at the moment the farm cannot sell dogs to the laboratories,
yet, because in order to have the necessary permission renewed, the
Mayor of the town must give an explicit authorization.

The former Mayor was absolutely in favour of the Morini farm, but A
FEW
WEEKS AGO A NEW MAYOR HAS BEEN ELECTED!
So it's really important to make pressure on him to convince him to
"reconvert" the farm to another activity.

The interesting and new event is that a few days ago an "Open
Meeting" of citiziens and companies operating in S. Polo has been
created.
They wrote an "open letter" to the Mayor, asking him to stop the
activity of the farm, both because of its cruelty and because of the
damage to the "image" of the region and consequently to the business
opportunities of all the other local companies**.

At this crucial moment, the Mayor must feel the responsibility for
such a choice. It's a fundamental moment.

For this reason, we invite all of your to send him and all the
regional council members, a "strong and clear" message. Here we
present a draft
message, but you are invited to write a personal one!

During the "Open Meeting", a network of animals shelter has been
activated, and they are ready to accomodate ALL the animals now kept
in the farm.

The complete text of the "open letter" to the Mayor can be found at
the
page:
http://www.novivisezione.org/morini.html

Please, take part in this protest!
Thank you very much.

Draft message
---------------------------------------

Dear Mayor of S. Polo d'Enza,
Dear Regional Councillors,

having been informed of the creation in S. Polo of an "Open Meeting
on the Morini case", which asked you not to allow the Morini farm to
keep selling dogs and cats to the experimentation laboratories, I
want to express my full support to the goals of the Open Meeting.

Given that the Morini farm has been given the opportunity to
be "converted" to a cruelty-free activity (thus ceasing to sell any
kind of animals to the labs), I think that this is the right way to
go, and invite you, as a Mayor of the city, to do what is in your
power to reach this important and humane goal.

Best regards,
name, country

I am desperate, can someone please help me? I need to find a vet who
KNOWS about rats!

Joelle.

Doug,
There shouldn't be a problem. I would always take the precaution of not
having rats that bite around a pregnant woman. I had rats throughout my
pregancys, but I never had a rat bite from the 7 rats I've owned.

Hi my name is Paulette I've just joined this group.
I have a grey dwarf bunny and a guinea pig which is black and brown.
They are about 6 months old, and still growing. I was wondering, is it
possible to toilet train guinea pigs, because my rabbit was toilet
trained when i bought him but the guinea pig just goes to the loo
anywhere!

I think as your rat is in such a poor condition you are best taking her to a vet, thats sad your friend mistreated your rat so badly that she got in such a bad state, she may have mites and you cant see those .

all the best with your rat

Sarah
