Hi Andrew,

I have just settled back in after returning from the tour and having guests.  Chris Hall  had a great time with us and it was sad to see him go on his long trip home.   On behalf of Maruyama Sensei, Yasuko-san and myself, I would like to thank you for the excellent organisation of the Sydney seminar.  We had a great time visiting new places and enjoyed all the wonderful food.  I have written to Miyoko separately to thank her.  As you know, I am relocating to the Gold Coast for a short while to settle Shani into school there.  I look forward to seeing you in Australia over this period.  Once again, many thanks to you and all the backroom support for a successful seminar.  Best wishes, Michael

This month we have a very special intensive.

We begin with kyu gradings from 9.00 am to 10.15 (Please arrive by 8.30 to set up.)

This is followed by four hours of Target-Focus Training (TFT) with guest instructors Mike "the mechanic" Allen and Kristian Miller-Karlsen. Sessions will be 10.30 to 12.30 pm and 1.00 to 3.00 pm

Mike and Kristian have supported our dojo through training with us and being guest instructors over the past several years. They are both great aikidoka who have cast their nets more widely. They have each trained extensively with Master Yang here in Sydney in the Yang Mian system in the last few years.

They have also been practising TFT (http://www.targetfocustraining.com/what_is_tft.html) privately under the direction of Tim Larkin in the US. They hosted Tim at a seminar here in Sydney in September 2005.

At our November intensive they will present some aspects of TFT. Kristian and Mike are the nearest thing to qualified TFT instructors in Australia.

Mike has been training martial arts for not-quite 30 years and is a recognised instructor in Kempo, Aikido and Yang Mian. He is also a practising physiotherapist (hence "the mechanic") who has patched up quite a few of our students over the years.

Kristian trained aikido relentlessly for over 10 years with a few years of Yang Mian and TFT thrown in. He is one of the most single-mindedly dedicated martial artists I have met.

I hope you can join us

best regards

Andrew

Martin and Kate are organising a working bee for this Sunday at Camperdown to prepare for next weeks seminar. I'm sure they will post details soon. Please pitch in.

Also, Joe Thambu Sensei (6-dan Yoshinkan) of Aikido Shudokan in Melbourne is in Sydney this weekend teaching Restraint and Removal seminars on Saturday and Sunday (A one-day seminar offered twice).

Joe Sensei ran his own security company in Melbourne for around 20 years, so his technique is fast and effective.

Everyone is welcome, it doesn't matter whether you're a regular student or haven't been to class for a while, this is a fantastic opportunity to train with a genuine master of aikido.

Meeting
We will have meetings about seminar organisation in conjunction with the intensive this weekend and also after class on Thursday, so please try to attend at least one of those classes if you have a role in the seminar or want a role in the seminar.

Intensive
I have invited a number of guest instructors for the intensive and James McGlone Sensei has accepted so far, we are still waiting to hear who else might turn up.

Hi everyone

We are cancelling Wednesday night training at Camperdown starting in August. We are suffering a rather severe shortage of instructors with both Martin and Kate travelling to the UK for several weeks (quite independently -- there's no goss :) and Vic returning to Argentina toward the end of the month.

Vic's last class will be Thursday 24 August and we will do something after class to mark the occasion. Vic will be receiving 10 ukemi from everyone on the mat as a farewell gift, so don't miss it.

The instructor shortage really kicks in after that. I have yet to figure out how to be in both St Clair and Camperdown simultaneously on Monday 28 August and Monday 4 September. I'm open to creative (but serious) suggestions.

So, no Wednesday class in Camperdown next week 2 August or subsequent Wednesdays till further notice. We will review the situation in about six weeks.

best regards

Andrew

Hi everyone

I'm spending a weekend in Cairns training with our club up there. Some of you know the Cairns head dojo instructor Justin Dunbar from Byron, and might remember Peter Nilsson who visited us here in Sydney a few months back.

I will be flying up on Friday evening 28 July and returning Monday evening 31 July. There will be morning and evening training on both Saturday and Sunday and a reef trip on the Monday. Let me know if you'd like to join me for a weekend in the sun.

Hi everyone

The July intensive will feature a visit from members of Aikido
Yuishinkai Canberra. Guest instructor will be Murray Loader Sensei (5-
dan).

Loader Sensei is one of the small number of Aikido Yuishinkai
instructors who trained with Maruyama Sensei before 1991. He has
travelled to Japan a number of times alone and with Australian aikido
groups. He developed a connection with Iwao Tamura Sensei (9-dan),
who sadly passed away in April 2003.

Loader Sensei served with the NZ Army and trained in karate before
starting Aikido. This may explain his focus on weapons and effective
technique :)

I urge you all to attend a week tomorrow (Sat 22 July). The Canberra
visitors will probably be making a day trip, so we will have lunch
after training before they make the return journey.

best regards

Andrew

Hi again

This Sunday, 11 June, there is a 3-hour seminar at Sugaogakuen
Training Centre, 3 Myoora Road, Terrey Hills.

The training features three 1-hour classes with three teachers from
different schools:

Paul Sinkinson - Aikido Terrey Hills
Colin Hackett - Central Coast Aikido
Stephen Seymour - AKI Balmain

This is a great opportunity to slip in some extra training on the
long weekend and meet and train with a range of people from different
schools.

The classes run 9 am to 12 pm and the cost is only $10.

A few of us are already planning to go. So just turn up (at least 20
mins early, I'd say) or give me a call if you have questions or want
to coordinate getting there.

best regards

Andrew

There *will* be training at Camperdown this Monday, 12 June, 7 to 9 pm.

Training at St Clair is cancelled and some St Clair students will be
travelling to Camperdown.

It's not often the two dojos get together, so please make an effort to
be there if you're in town this weekend.

Hi everyone

I have made three changes to the existing calendar:

1) The June intensive has been rescheduled to Saturday 24 June.

2) The October intensive has been replaced by Maruyama Sensei's
seminar, Friday 13 to Monday 16 October.

3) I have changed the reminder from 5 days notice to 8 days notice.
(The reminder has been sent on Monday the week of the intensive but
will now be sent on the Friday before that. Therefore the reminder will
be for "Saturday, a week tomorrow")

You can access our Yahoo group (and the associated calendar) from the

I'm sure you'll join with me in congratulating Mark Bichard on the birth of his daughter:

Some of us had the pleasure of meeting Mark's partner Bettina and daughter Ruby at the bbq after our last intensive. Let's wish them all the best and offer a hearty welcome to Imogen.

Dear Aikido Friends,

Master Koretoshi Maruyama's 2005 Seminar, held at Goshinkan, Australia,  has finally made it onto DVD. The 5 day seminar has been condensed into 4 hours (2 DVDs), where Maruyama sensei delves deeper into the true meaning of Aikido, teaching exercises to enable us to more fully experience 'resonance with the universal energy'. His clearly detailed instructions facilitate application of this deepened sensitivity to the practice and teaching of our aikido techniques.

If you are interested in purchasing this DVD set, please let me know asap in order to get an idea of numbers to produce. The price has been kept to a low AUD 40.00 (plus postage) for PAL format, so that it may be affordable in preparation for Sensei's next visit. (Postage is free for orders of 5 or more sets).

Aiki Greetings,
Elisabeth Andel

Hi everyone

We will hold a meeting this Sunday at the Camperdown dojo to discuss the way forward for the next few months. We will be discussing plans for Maruyama Sensei's seminar in October and what we need to do to make it a success, including selecting a representative to coordinate with other venues on the OZ-NZ tour.

Please arrive in time for a 9.30 start.

Please respond if you plan to attend, particularly if you're coming frm St Clair, so we can arrange something to make your trip worthwhile. I'm open to suggestions of a training or social nature :)

best regards

Andrew
