Dear Aikido instructors and players,
of Shodokan in Oceania,
and instructors and members of non affiliated Tomiki Aikido clubs  and all non-sports  schools of Aikido in Oceania,

We are pleased to announce the Oceania Aikido Kyougi Taikai 2008, being held in Adelaide South Australia at the University of South Australia on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th of March 2008, and invite your attendance either as players, officials or guest dignitaries, and of course nonparticipants are welcomed as spectators.

Attached is the itinerary and programme, and applications will shortly be available  from your Shodokan club representative or
on request by email from this address or shortly can be downloaded from the " Events and News" page of this website
http://shodokan-sports.info/INDEX/EventsNews.html

Entry is by application from individuals and not by club entry so we would be pleased if you would pass this invitation on to members of your dojo. This year we have a range of Kata competition events that may interest those Aikido schools that have not been associated with competition in the past. In Japan there are many traditional schools who participate in such competitions these days in the kata events.

Looking fprward to your participation.

Our good friends Kristian, Mike the Mechanic and Mick Valentine are available on Saturday, 17 November to run another TFT session for us.

For those of you with no previous knowledge of TFT, this link will give some idea, but there's nothing like direct experience.
Feel free to pack your drinking trousers for after class.

Cost will be $25 for four hours of sweet mayhem, free for AYS students paying monthly.

It is likely the sessions will follow our normal pattern of 9.30 to 11.30 and then 12 to 2, but we will fine-tune on the day. Please show up by 9 to help set up.

As usual you are invited to train in bare feet or clean training shoes. (If you wore them to the dojo, they ain't clean.)
This is to preserve our mats from grit and other horrors you wouldn't voluntarily rub your face in.

Instructors, please promote this event to students in the coming weeks.

best regards

Dear Brisbane and wider area Instructors,

If you could distribute the following to your members that would be
appreciated (Elisabeth, can the disclaimer be put on the AY website)

Maruyama Sensei Seminar Sept./ Oct

I am pleased to report that 75% of the available places for the
upcoming Maruyama Sensei Seminar have been presold and would
encourage everyone to pre-register for the seminar as places now are
very limited. To pre-register please go to http://brisbaneaikido.com/
maruyama2007.html pre registration is a saving of $20 on the door
price. Pre registration closes 21st Sept or when places are full

It is a rare opportunity and a priveledge to have an original student
and instructor of Maruyama Sensei's calibre come to Brisbane to teach
for a week. Training with a world renown master teacher doesn't come
any more convenient or cheaper than this! This year is also Maruyama
sensei's Golden Anniversary (50th) of Aikido, which we will be
celebrating in style at Saturdays seminar dinner. I encourage
everyone, particularly senior students and instructors to come and
celebrate this with Maruyama Sensei, partners and families are welcome.

Attached is the National seminar waiver form, it would be appreciated
if it can be completed and brought by ALL participants to the seminar
to save time on the day

Billet hosts are still required. If you are able to assist, could you
please contact Tony Neal Sensei, ph. Tony 0411 150 640 or email

best wishes,

Danny

As you can see we still need another volunteer so if you would like to join the group please contact one of the committee members.  All you need to do is be available for a couple of hours each month to attend the meetings.

The group is planning some marketing drives to get some more new students and will soon be working on a business model for the club.  Our long term goal is to own our own dojo in Sydney.  So if you'd like to help the club move to bigger and better things, come along and lend a hand.

    Regards,
    Kate

Hello!

As you may or may not be aware, the Sydney dojo (both St Clair and
Camperdown) are engaged in various project to advance and improve the
fun and enjoyment for students, and promoting Aikido as a Good Thing
to a wider audience.

One of those projects is coming up, and you can help!

On Saturday September 1st, St Clair will be having their Community
Spring Fair. We have organised to give a 20 minute demonstration and
we'd like help. We'll be performing two mini classes. One for kids,
and one for adults. To do that, we need as many students to help as we
can. We need people to help out with the demo, and also behind the
scenes with setup, to answer queries, hand out fliers etc.

We'll meet at St Clair dojo between 8:30 and 9am to grab the mats and
head to the Fair. Afterwards, we'll return to St Clair dojo for more
training and the remainder of our monthly intensive, and maybe some
lunch, drinks etc.

You want to help, so either contact Andrew Sensei, or reply directly
to me and let us know. If you have any questions or need more
information, feel free to ask me or Andrew Sensei.

Looking forward to seeing you,
Enjoy,

Michael.

Sounds like fun! Be there with bells on.

Who else is up for a bit of public showing off? If you want to recruit chicky
babes I need some boof heads to throw.

And who's up for the pub afterwards?

Please find attached the details for Maruyama Sensei's Sept, October Seminar in Brisbane 2007. The Australian seminar series this year will be held in Brisbane and Melbourne and I would like you to consider adding the Brisbane seminar to your itinerary.

Last year we had a fabulous turnout with aikidoka from all around the country and a few from overseas joining us for the weekend. This year the seminar runs for the better part of six days in a much roomier venue just 8km from the city centre. Set in a rural aspect it also features an outdoor bar (for those serious apre training conversations). During each day there will be 5 hours of teaching by Maruyama sensei plus some social activities and instructor workshops (run by AY instructors) as well.

Many Brisbane students are so keen to have you visit that they will even give you somewhere to stay - please contact our billeting man Tony Sensei if you are interested (see registration form for details)

Seminar registration includes a discount for out of town students that have far to travel and an early bird discount if you register early enough. Registration includes lunches for each day and the seminar dinner as well. Some pictures from last years seminar and dinner can be found on http://brisbaneaikido.com/gallery/Maruyama2006/Maruyama2006.html

Online registration available  http://brisbaneaikido.com/maruyama2007.htmlwhere more details on the seminar can also be found

best wishes and look forward to seeing you there,
danny

A general message to let people know that, through Goshinkan Byron Bay, we have organised a combined gift for Maruyama sensei for presentation in Hawaii. The gift is a scroll with a specially written poem composed by 3 Yuishinkai senseis attempting to crystalise something of Yuishinkai spirit and Australian connection. The poem below has been translated into Japanese and is contained in a decorated indigenous emu caller.

Steam breath, rising sun
Positive mind lifting ken
How long is the way?

Dreamtime lizard skimming pond
Ancient wisdom's journey

Humid moon, ken falling
Lizard still in shadow dance
Pelican wing gliding

. . .

We hope you approve.

Hi everyone

David Harvey Sensei, who has had a long association with our dojo, is once again running a dojo of his own. He has organised a seminar with Alan Higgs Sensei ( http://shodokan-sports.info/index/AboutUs.html) who relocated to Brisbane from Osaka in the last year or so.

Shodokan Aikido takes its lineage from Tomiki Sensei, an early student of O-sensei.

The training in Shodokan Aikido is markedly different from our own. The school incorporates formal sport competition and a unique syllabus. However, "aikido is aikido", and many useful insights could be gained by attending this seminar and supporting a friend of our own dojo. Those of you who have attended the monthly yudansha workshops will be able to catch up with some familiar faces.

best regards

Andrew

Hi everyone

Daniel James Sensei of Griffith Aikido in Brisbane will be in Sydney this weekend and will teach regular class on Monday evening, 9 July at Camperdown.

Sensei has also graciously agreed to teach a class on Sunday evening, followed by some social activities. Please register your interest in this class.

In addition, there will be informal training with sensei on Sunday and Monday mornings: please let me know if you would like to join in.

Dr Daniel James BSc(Hons), MPhil, PhD, SMIEEE is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Wireless Monitoring and Applications at Griffith University. He works on a number of industry-based wireless applications. He is also working with the Queensland Academy of Sport and the Australian Institute of Sport on Sports Technology applications for elite Athletes.

Sensei gathered data from a range of aikidoists of varying levels of proficiency in cutting with a bokken (including Master Maruyama, Mike Williams Sensei and John Ward Sensei). The experiment demonstrated a correlation between the measured data and the relative expertise of the practitioner. Sensei presented his findings to an international physics conference in Tokyo in 2005 and then went on to have amazing adventures in japan with a junior yudansha from Sydney. http://griffithaikido.com/aikidojapan.html

In 2006 James Sensei was the keynote speaker at an international conference in Kanazawa. This year in November he will take up a 7-week japan society for the promotion of science international fellowship sponsored by Keio University.

James Sensei has published extensively in Academe and in the martials arts. He is famous for disproving the existence of ki: unliftable body is a simple matter of vectors of force, apparently.

James Sensei is a fabulous teacher who presents a wealth of understanding in very few words. I strongly recommend his classes to you.

best regards

Andrew
