Hi everyone

A few years back I had one of the most fabulous experiences of my life when I went with a group of aikido people to a small island in Fiji. It was two weeks in paradise.

A similar trip is being organised for this July (see the mail below) and expressions of interest are being sought. The trip is being organised by my teacher Michael Williams Sensei, Chief Instructor International of Aikido Yuishinkai.

Last time we went for two weeks and it cost $2500-$3000. If you are interested, please contact Valerie Williams Sensei, aikido@...

Also feel free to ask me about the previous trip to find out what you're in for.

A

I think I've booked the last saturday of the month for the forseeable future.

Just spent a week with David Brown Sensei, 5-dan Aikikai, at his home outside Melbourne. My friend Danny and I did over 20 hours training with him in his private dojo. It has mapped out the next few years training for us.

Also had lunch with Stan Schmidt Sensei and did a little training.

Look forward to seeing you.

regards

My apologies wil not be able to make it this weekend.

Are you going to schedule for the rest of the year? I can then pencil
them in my diary and ensure I have the best chance of getting over.

Just a reminder that, as well as our xmas party, we will be having our final
intensive of the year tomorrow.

We will have our second guest instructor of the week, Michael Clarke Sempai,
for the first session. Mike Sempai has a black belt in aikibudo (Kufudokan) and
has also trained for several years in Takemusu Aikido under Takayasu Sensei
(6-dan). Some of you have met Mike Sempai on previous visits. This is the first
time he has accepted an invitation to teach.

We will train the usual times, 9.30 to 11.30, break for coffee, then 12 to 2.00

best regards

Andrew

On Wednesday, 15 December, class will be taught by Dr Danny James Sensei (4-dan) from our Griffith University club. James Sensei is an eclectic budo researcher. One of his areas of interest is the analysis and integration of basic exercises. Next week, James Sensei will explore the connection between kumitachi and our three ashi waza from the warm-ups (changing hanmi, moon shadow -- lizard legs and cutting). He will then examine how these principles have application in taijutsu.

After class we will probably eat pizza and drink beer at our local restaurant.

Is Aikido a complete martial art? Can the Aikidoka reach the
pinnacle training solely in Aidido?

Or does it need to be supplemented by another, complementary
internal art e.g. Tai Chi, Pakua or Hsingi to produce a well-rounded
martial artist?

Howdy All,

Apparently Ben is going better than Miranda at the moment (hugs to
Miranda!). No broken bones, anyway.

Things up in ol' Humpty Doo are pretty good. I am already desperately
busy - catching snakes, measuring snakes, feeding snakes - snakes,
snakes, snakes.

Accommodation is an ongoing issue however. I am currently stuck
sharing a very small flat with another guy and am using borrowed space
to temporarily house the animals. Someone in the government up here
thought it was a sensible thing to bulldoze half the village that I
normally stay in. About eight perfectly functional houses were
destroyed. No-one really knows why. No-one really cares.

My work requires me to go out most evenings until about 11pm searching
for (you guessed it) snakes. This commitment, coupled with a one hour
drive to Darwin and a little transport issue will probably preclude
regular (if any) training. But my weapons are en route and there are
always opportunities to practice aikido. Large, scary venomous snakes,
for example, have a marvelous ability to focus the mind! And small
community politics are endlessly fascinating.

I am glad Mark decided to bite (even if I find the metaphor alarming).
Mark, personally, I feel more inclined towards your point of view and
agree wholeheartedly. Unfortunately, I have a tendency to occasionally
make outrageous statements just to see if they can be justified. There
is often a grain of truth and always a different perspective: Aims,
goals and opinions can be dangerous. Perhaps the aim of Aikido is to
show us the harmonious alternative, and that is all.

Anyway, hope everyone is happy (irrespective of bone condition).

Hooray!!

Ben

OK, I'll bite...

> Aikido has no aim.
I'm thinking that O'Sensei might have had something to say about that! I
believe that he might have said that the aim of Aikido was to bring about
peace (harmony/love).

From my perspective the aim of (my) Aikido is to learn about myself, to have
an arena of challenge and investigation that leads to a better understanding
of how I interact in myself, and with others. The trials that I face in
Aikido exactly reflect the opportunities to learn I am presented with, in my
life.

My idea of Aikido is a set of life principles that can be transported from
discipline to discipline, and are always valid in any arena. Aikido is AN
application of these principles, not THE application.

My goal is to remain open to the challenge of change that Aikido constantly
presents me with. To try to see:
when I become arrogant and think that I know how to do a technique;
when I stop listening to another's voice over my own - think I know better;
Where my blocks are, and how these translate into my life;
When my tension/aggression/fighting mind come into play, and how I might
circumvent these in the future.

As for Atemi... I figure a convincing Atemi is one that moves Uke's mind!

Mark.

Hi Andrew,

I don't think it is my year this year. I am currently wearing a wrist splint - with a suspected wrist fracture. Not a major fracture I think - but .... Still awaiting the specialist to check the x-rays and confirm. So - just in case you decide to go ahead and book tickets to NZ - I thought I should just let you know that if it is indeed a fracture, which I suspect - the splint may not be off in time for grading. Of course you could still come over if you wish - and I will let you know if the specialist doesn't think it is a fracture - although the pain has not lessened over the last week or so - so I think it probably is.

It happened last week at training - I suspect a bokken or jo - but really cannot recollect anything happening that would cause a fracture. Adrenaline must do funny things to a body!

Sensei said I can do my grading later - although it won't be the same somehow.

Hope all is well at the dojo - please say hello to everyone.

G'Day everyone,
I just joined this group at the invitation of Sensei Sunter. What a good
idea Andrew to get things going here in Sydney. Now I hadn't noticed how
long this group has been up and running but there is not much action on the
email front. Or am I not receiving the discussions?

Here is something I have been pondering. How does atemi fit with the spirit
of Aikido training? I mean should you train to do it? And if so why? And
in what way?

I personally feel you should train to strike what you are aiming at, at
anytime, any place and from any position with maximum power.

'This is not Aikido' I here some of you scream subconsciously. So what do
you think? To answer I think you will have to define what Aikido's aims are
and even what your idea of aikido is or what your goal in training aikido
is.
