Hi everyone

The July intensive will feature a visit from members of Aikido
Yuishinkai Canberra. Guest instructor will be Murray Loader Sensei (5-
dan).

Loader Sensei is one of the small number of Aikido Yuishinkai
instructors who trained with Maruyama Sensei before 1991. He has
travelled to Japan a number of times alone and with Australian aikido
groups. He developed a connection with Iwao Tamura Sensei (9-dan),
who sadly passed away in April 2003.

Loader Sensei served with the NZ Army and trained in karate before
starting Aikido. This may explain his focus on weapons and effective
technique :)

I urge you all to attend a week tomorrow (Sat 22 July). The Canberra
visitors will probably be making a day trip, so we will have lunch
after training before they make the return journey.

best regards

Andrew

Hi again

This Sunday, 11 June, there is a 3-hour seminar at Sugaogakuen
Training Centre, 3 Myoora Road, Terrey Hills.

The training features three 1-hour classes with three teachers from
different schools:

Paul Sinkinson - Aikido Terrey Hills
Colin Hackett - Central Coast Aikido
Stephen Seymour - AKI Balmain

This is a great opportunity to slip in some extra training on the
long weekend and meet and train with a range of people from different
schools.

The classes run 9 am to 12 pm and the cost is only $10.

A few of us are already planning to go. So just turn up (at least 20
mins early, I'd say) or give me a call if you have questions or want
to coordinate getting there.

best regards

Andrew

Hi everyone

There *will* be training at Camperdown this Monday, 12 June, 7 to 9 pm.

Training at St Clair is cancelled and some St Clair students will be
travelling to Camperdown.

It's not often the two dojos get together, so please make an effort to
be there if you're in town this weekend.

best regards

Hi everyone

I have made three changes to the existing calendar:

1) The June intensive has been rescheduled to Saturday 24 June.

2) The October intensive has been replaced by Maruyama Sensei's
seminar, Friday 13 to Monday 16 October.

3) I have changed the reminder from 5 days notice to 8 days notice.
(The reminder has been sent on Monday the week of the intensive but
will now be sent on the Friday before that. Therefore the reminder will
be for "Saturday, a week tomorrow")

You can access our Yahoo group (and the associated calendar) from the
website: click Notices.

Hi everyone

I'm sure you'll join with me in congratulating Mark Bichard on the birth of his daughter:

"... we have a new addition to the family. Imogen came into this world last Thursday morning and seems to be enjoying herself."

Some of us had the pleasure of meeting Mark's partner Bettina and daughter Ruby at the bbq after our last intensive. Let's wish them all the best and offer a hearty welcome to Imogen.

Dear Aikido Friends,

Master Koretoshi Maruyama's 2005 Seminar, held at Goshinkan, Australia,  has finally made it onto DVD. The 5 day seminar has been condensed into 4 hours (2 DVDs), where Maruyama sensei delves deeper into the true meaning of Aikido, teaching exercises to enable us to more fully experience 'resonance with the universal energy'. His clearly detailed instructions facilitate application of this deepened sensitivity to the practice and teaching of our aikido techniques.

If you are interested in purchasing this DVD set, please let me know asap in order to get an idea of numbers to produce. The price has been kept to a low AUD 40.00 (plus postage) for PAL format, so that it may be affordable in preparation for Sensei's next visit. (Postage is free for orders of 5 or more sets).

Aiki Greetings,

Hi everyone

We will hold a meeting this Sunday at the Camperdown dojo to discuss the way forward for the next few months. We will be discussing plans for Maruyama Sensei's seminar in October and what we need to do to make it a success, including selecting a representative to coordinate with other venues on the OZ-NZ tour.

Please arrive in time for a 9.30 start.

Please respond if you plan to attend, particularly if you're coming frm St Clair, so we can arrange something to make your trip worthwhile. I'm open to suggestions of a training or social nature :)

best regards

Dear Instructors and Students,

As many of you are aware, we have had Goshinkan on the market for the last year.  The time has come when it looks like the final contracts will be exchanged and Valerie, Shani and myself will relocate to Fiji to establish Aikido dojos in that country.  Goshinkan will continue to run exactly as before under the excellent guidance of Jim Nicholls and Elisabeth Andel.  Elisabeth Andel will still be the Aikido Yuishinkai International multi-media coordinator for the group.  I still retain the position of International Chief Instructor and Chief Instructor for Australia.  Valerie will continue in her capacity of correspondence and promotions.

On the 25th of March, there will be two classes ( 10:00-12:00 and 3:00-5:00) , followed by an evening get-together (starting at 7:30), in the dojo for us to farewell all of you.  On Sunday morning at 10:00am, there will be a large Yudansha grading.  As you know, I keep a list of all black belts in Australia who are currently practicing (approximately 80).  Therefore, I list below those I would be honoured to grade prior to my departure.  In future, I will visit Australia for regular seminars, including those with Maruyama Sensei.  We are currently making arrangement for Sensei's visit in October, when he will do an Australian tour to a number of different venues, including Goshinkan.

All of your dojos have run independently of me for many years.  So, only Goshinkan will feel a difference.  Under the guidance of Jim and Elisabeth, this will soon stabilise and extend into the future.  On Saturday evening, the 25th of April at the get-together, I would like to take the opportunity to introduce you to the new owner and caretaker of Goshinkan.  Please let me know if your students will be grading on the 26th.  Of course, everyone is welcome to attend both the get-together, the classes and the grading.  Very best wishes, Michael Williams

Hi everyone

I am one of those people who have been watching the list for a couple of years
but have
never contributed to the discussion. However I recently had an experience that
has
prompted me to ask if any one else has had the same.

I have been training in Aikido for 10 years. My home dojo is an independent dojo
headed
by Catherine Schnell Sensei, with over 25 years experience in Aikido. Sensei has
always
provided a solid base in our style she has encouraged us to train with other
teachers and
experience different styles and training environments. During my training I
have had the
opportunity to train with some wonderful teachers such as Suzuki Yas Sensei,
Endo Sensei,
Ariga Sensei, Patricia Hendrix Sensei, Denis Wheeler Sensei and many others both
interstate and overseas.

So you can imagine how excited I was when I heard the Doshu was coming to
Melbourne
Australia. I was even more excited when I heard that Aiki-kai Australia had a
non-member
fee. Knowing that it would be an extremely popular event we promptly sent in
our
registration forms only to be told that our registrations had been refused
because we did
not hold a Dan grading that was recognized by Hombu Dojo.

You can imagine how disappointed I was that I was denied entry. Having trained
with so
many other groups and teachers I have never experienced such overt
discrimination and
exclusion at any Aikido event. No one has ever asked for proof of my Dan
grading, nor
have I ever practiced Aikido in an unsafe or disrespectful manner.

I feel embarrassed and sad that Aikido in Australia is dominated by an
organization that
excludes and discriminates against fellow Aikido practitioners. From my
experience I have
not found this to be the case in other countries, where I have been told that
everyone
trains with everyone and seminars are open to all.

I can't help thinking that the narrow-minded "powers that be" at Aiki-kai
Australia, I
would argue, have missed the point of O Sensei's teaching.

Hi everyone

We have had success recently with our letterbox drops in both
Camperdown and St Clair. This seems to be a great way to attract new
students, and I'd like to enlist your help this Saturday in Camperdown
if you have some time to spare either before or after the intensive.

We are hoping to start AikiKids classes in Camperdown in the new school
term commencing in just under two weeks, so this weekend is perfect
timing (imho) -- and if we get one or two more adults for the beginners
class, so much the better!

Martin and I have arranged to start at 8 am and spend an hour traipsing
the picturesque lanes and alleyways of Camperdown and Newtown. If you
would like to join in you're very welcome. If 2 til 3 in the post-
intensive suits you better it's possible we'll have a flyer or two left
over!

Please let me know if you can help out and your preference for a.i. or
p.i.

best regards

Andrew

Hi everyone and welcome especially to new members of the group.

We hold an intensive each month on a Saturday at our Camperdown dojo.
We usually:
arrive from 9 am to set up,
train from 9.30 till 11.30,
have a half-hour coffee break, and then
train from 12 till 2.

The sessions are geared to whoever is present. Questions both large a
small are welcomed and we often end up exploring areas we might not
have time for in the evening classes. We often train weapons in one
or both sessions.

The first intensive for the year is this Saturday at the Camperdown
dojo. I'd like to extend a special invitation to anyone who has
recently started training to come along this Saturday to join in, or
observe class, or just to say hello.

In future you will receive an email each month on the Monday before
the intensive to let you know it's on. You can check the dates of
future intensives by looking at the Calendar in the our Yahoo group:

Hi everyone

We had a great training session for our final class of the year at Camperdown last night and went out for pizza and beer at Franks afterwards.

Last Saturday we had the final intensive for 2005 and students from St Clair and Camperdown got together to train. We were able to run both a kids class and a general class at the same time. Training was followed by a picnic at Glebe Point.

Congratulations to the following people who have graded recently: Craig Leith (3-kyu), Mike Vanderdonk (3-kyu), Helen Preketes (4-kyu) and Herschel Smith (5-kyu). Well done!

Thanks everyone for your training this year and thanks also for your help and support. I'd particularly like to thank Martin John and Kate Gunton for running classes. As the club grows we become increasingly reliant on our instructors. Please continue to support them in the coming year.

Have a great Christmas and a fantastic New Year

Andrew
