RE: [AussieFeltmakers] ATC swaps in photo album

Wow Stacy,
Am I glad I came on board -the works looks great! Thanks for organising it.

I guess I lean towards the art aspect of felting evolving from the craft aspect so I like pushing the surface qualities a bit. I can see from your samples why you would like mine.

When cutting up felt I was attracted to the layers that were revealed-like sedimentary rocks. I thought it reminded me of a type of quilting (I think developed by islanders) where they have brilliantly coloured layer of cotton and rather than place pieces on top they cut through the layers to reveal more and more colours.

There is nothing much involved in the technique really. You lay out the wool (I have always used tops for this but am increasingly thinking Batts are the way to go -as Wendy has been showing me how you can split the batts into finer layers)

I lay out as if for a thick piece of felt. 3-4 layers (or more)

Using strongly contrasting colours I think gives vitality to the result. Layers dont have tobe a single solid colour.

Then full the heck out of it. It really needs to be solidly felted ( I think I threw this one in a hot wash -cant remember it was a while ago).

The last layer needs to be relatively solid in colour  or I think it could  be a bit confusing as you reveal colours underneath. (but I still use whispy edges as I have a background in watercolours)

Then cut away at different depths is reveal the colours. I just used scissors and like the repetitive little leaf shape marks I was getting , but maybe a sharp stanley knife could increase the variation of line or shape.

I then needlefelted some of the interesting bits I had cut off back into the image adding further depth.

Thinking about it it..it is sort of how I have developed my style of painting ........ building up and cutting back and building again with layers glowing underneath.

Hope this makes sense.
Allison

Subject: [AussieFeltmakers] ATC swaps in photo album

Hi all

I am SO GLAD I hosted this ATC swap because the array of work that has come in is so very interesting. I’ve scanned two ATC’s from each participating artist and put them in an “ATC Swap 2006” album in the photos section:

http://au.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/AussieFeltmakers/photos

When you click the link above you’ll be taken to yahoo groups sign in page, then it will let you into our photo album area.

Allison Pitt joined the swap at the last minute – so glad you did, Allison as your layered and carved ATCs are so unique – in fact, I’d have to say they are exciting! I’d like to hear the steps involved.

Meg Smart-Firman sent cards with a variety of embellishments. She’s obviously a talented machine embroiderer as well as a feltmaker.

Jillian Cain’s work shows great textures and composition in Outback colours with minimal hand stitching to compliment the work.

Wendy Burgess also played around with inclusions and embellishments. Are those Angelina fibres in your purple nuno flower card? Very neatly finished cards, I might add.

Sandie O’Neill’s show-stopping needle felting is to die for. You’ll all love the pixie face on the card I scanned for the photo album.

Stacey Apeitos – that’s me. I played around with blanket stitch on some of my cards and machine embroidery on others.

I have Natalie on my list of participants – possibly her cards will arrive this week. Can you let me know if you are sending something, Natalie? Once I know if Natalie is in the mix still or not, the swaps won’t be far off being mailed to participants.

Thanks to the gals who sent stuff in.

Regards

Stacey
