Peta,
I use an old electric frypan, fill with hot water half way up the side. Lay the wool, I use the wool dry ( not sure if it should be wet but for rainbow dyeing dry works), in the frypan. I then sprinkle different coloured dyes on to the wool. Gently poke the wool a bit to make sure it is in the water. Put on the lid. Bring it to just before boiling and let it gently steam for 30 mins. I don’t stir or fiddle with it again.
If you are using silk, or silk chiffon, add a dash of detergent, and a bit of vinegar to aid exhaustion.
Then when finished, I tip the whole lot into the sink, and let it cool on it’s own. Then rinse in tepid water until the water is clear. Then lay out to dry. I gently squeeze the water out. You don’t want it to accidentally felt in the process.
Also do not use the frypan or any other utensils you may use for anything else but dyeing.
Others may have better suggestions. I am only a beginner at this
