Hi all

I am SO GLAD I hosted this ATC swap because the array of work that has come in is so very interesting. I’ve scanned two ATC’s from each participating artist and put them in an “ATC Swap 2006” album in the photos section:

http://au.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/AussieFeltmakers/photos

When you click the link above you’ll be taken to yahoo groups sign in page, then it will let you into our photo album area.

Allison Pitt joined the swap at the last minute – so glad you did, Allison as your layered and carved ATCs are so unique – in fact, I’d have to say they are exciting! I’d like to hear the steps involved.

Meg Smart-Firman sent cards with a variety of embellishments. She’s obviously a talented machine embroiderer as well as a feltmaker.

Jillian Cain’s work shows great textures and composition in Outback colours with minimal hand stitching to compliment the work.

Wendy Burgess also played around with inclusions and embellishments. Are those Angelina fibres in your purple nuno flower card? Very neatly finished cards, I might add.

Sandie O’Neill’s show-stopping needle felting is to die for. You’ll all love the pixie face on the card I scanned for the photo album.

Stacey Apeitos – that’s me. I played around with blanket stitch on some of my cards and machine embroidery on others.

I have Natalie on my list of participants – possibly her cards will arrive this week. Can you let me know if you are sending something, Natalie? Once I know if Natalie is in the mix still or not, the swaps won’t be far off being mailed to participants.

Thanks to the gals who sent stuff in.

Regards

Stacey

Oh, thank you Stacey.  I am loving learning the art, but I have seen some magnificent works from experienced felters recently and I am aware that there is plenty to learn!

Hi all

Jillian’s ATC swaps arrived today and they are fantastic! Don’t know why you are beating yourself up as per your below email, gal! The felting wasn’t taken as far as you’d take a garment, true, but these aren’t going to get lots of handling. The colours and designs are superb.

I have just posted off my swap... I am very disappointed in my efforts. I am very new to felting and think I should have gained a bit more experience before putting myself on the line.  I had no idea how hard it is to produce such a small piece!

Dear Stacey,
I usually dont join these sort of things but I have a piece of felt I could cut up into the required size -to save people getting one of their own ATCs back.

I will try and get organised enough to get it out to you by Thursday.

There was a rush of posts on the American based feltmakers list when Narnia came out postulating how the Snowqueens constumes had been made....but you have seen it!  Must admit everytime she hit the screen I was most distracted trying to work out how they had made the material.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been visiting family in the USA for three weeks but now I’m back! Not that I was looking for handmade felt during my trip, but I did come across something of interest to share. At Disney MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida I saw an exhibit of costumes from the recent Chronicles of Narnia movie. One of the Snow Queen’s gowns appeared to be made of hand-felted fabric – it was mostly grey with different fibres running through it, very textural. Looked fragile as though it would not stand up to too much wear and tear. I would have loved to have felt it but it was in a glass case!

THE SWAP

Those of you participating in the Artist Trading Card swap can send your items to me at 12 Elata Street, Oakleigh South VIC 3167. I’d like to get them by Thursday or Friday this week. We asked for six entries to the swap but unless we have more than the six participants listed below, you are likely to get one of yours returned.

It isn’t too late to join in, by the way. I love surprises, so please consider being a surprise participant! Your ATC must incorporate felt but if you haven’t made individual pieces of felt to size, you could cut the “cards” from a larger felt piece or attach felt bits to some other material backing cut to size. What I’m getting at is that you don’t have to get out your felting gear especially to make ATCs. You can use felt scraps you already have on hand. Why not?

Here are the participants I know about:

Stacey Stacey@...

Meg mifir2002@...

Natalie kastana@...

Wendy enchanted_wool@...

Sandie feltftheart@...

Jillian JCain@...

Cheers,

Stacey

PS Here are the swap guidelines again:

The main rule when creating an ATC is to make it 2.5" x 3.5" or 64mm x 89mm. If you are a little under this size, that is preferable to being a little over! The reason is that the really serious ATC swappers store their collection in clear plastic trading card sleeves in a ring binder and cards that are too big (or too thick ) won't fit.

Artists usually put their name, date and contact information on the reverse of each card they make. When the ATC is made of felt, you probably want to create a paper label and attach it to the back.

 Sizing Felt ATC's
I have found an easy way of getting felt ATC's the correct size is to start with a collaged prefelt. As it approaches the final stage of felting, I cut it into rectangles slightly bigger than 64mm x 89mm. With a ruler on my work surface, I continue to manipulate the ATC's until they reach the correct size.

This Swap
Participants would need to provide me with six handmade ATC's that are constructed with felt. You will receive six in return.

Your ATC's can be entirely felted or a mixed-media collage incorporating handmade felt. Stitching or other embellishment is fine. They do not have to be identical. Just be sure to label them and stick to the size restriction as described above. If you can, place your six ATC's in a ziplock plastic bag before posting to me.

You will need to enclose a SSAE when you send your ATC's. I'd suggest you buy a couple of B2 or B4 Postpak Tough Bags from the post office. Address one to yourself and add $3.70 postage stamps to it. Fold it in half and stick it, along with your six ATC's in the other tough bag addressed to me:

 Stacey Apeitos
12 Elata Street

Please send before August 31, 2006.

Hi Nat

Sorry didn't reply sooner, thought the others had adequately answered the
topic of tops so I'll leave that one.

The question of putting your work on the web is a tricky one, if you keep
it off you are missing an opportunity to show others what you are capable
of and possibly an opportunity to sell a piece. Unfortunately there are
always people around who will copy, and not a great deal you can do about
it, unless it is a direct copy of your work and challenging something
legally can become really messy.

Usually with my work I make sure it is shown somewhere at least once before
it goes on the web, just gives me a point of reference for when that work
first appeared plus I date and keep all my sketches, & design notes. If you
want to get really meticulous  you should seal your notes, photo of your
work etc and post it to your self and then keep the sealed stamped envelope
on file.

Good luck with all your new ideas they sound fantastic.

Sandie :-)

Hi to everyone,
I have been off line for a couple of weeks. Visitors and busy with my
"voluntary" job. At
last my "studio" is cleaned out of 40years pottery life. Now I can felt with
lots of space.In
the West we also have "Sal's Wool Den" run by Helen O'Neil. I think most of her
tops and
batts come from Euroa . She does not have a sample card but will post goodies. I
usuallly
see her at the Bunbury Felters day . The retreat ( 1st -3rd Sept) at Busselton
Helen will be
there. Silk, throwsters waste , tops etc.. Have been saving up!!! Looking
forward to the
interaction. I have sent off my ATC'S. Hope that they are alright. My sewing
machine is
back after it's overhaul and now I am into machine embroidery (free form). Some
funny
things coming out of it all. Next is to do some thing with the fibre exchange
goodies. I
have at last come to grips with a "visual diary" after persuasion by an artist
friend. should
be interesting!! I can hear the call of the spacious shed regards to you all.

Kerry sells beautiful hand dyed merino tops. I also buy commercially dyed merino tops from First Edition Fibres & Yarns in Victoria, and sometimes Ashford Australia.

I buy different types of fibre depending on what I am making. I usually use batts (from Pat) for as a base for hats, bags, and scarves( I split the batt for a very fine scarf). I use mostly use tops (for nuno felting. And I use Corriedale or Romney sliver for needlefelting.

Hope this helps :-)

Yahoo, I can see......my son finally came to fix my computer....started it up and laughed like heck and told me I needed a new computer!!!! or at least another screen.  I could hardly see anything on it...so for now I've got another monitor that was in his cupboard and now I'll have to start looking at new computers.

I'm going to check out the photos I posted to see how they look, now I can see.

Regards Kerry

Kerry sells beautiful hand dyed merino tops. I also buy commercially dyed merino tops from First Edition Fibres & Yarns in Victoria, and sometimes Ashford Australia.

I buy different types of fibre depending on what I am making. I usually use batts (from Pat) for as a base for hats, bags, and scarves( I split the batt for a very fine scarf). I use mostly use tops (for nuno felting. And I use Corriedale or Romney sliver for needlefelting.

Hope this helps :-)

All the best

Hi Natalie
The Wool Pages book is a good source of suppliers. Treetop Colour Harmonies sell tops and Virginia Farms in NSW also sells top over the net. NSW Spinners & Weavers Guild also have a source page with links to suppliers. Did you do a Google search?

Hi everyone, As i am now very much into tops.
I would very much like to know of any sites that sell alpaca and merino tops in Australia over the Internet.
I have  big ideas for my summer show, including a wedding dress, skirt,an top.
Would like to put on a fashion show next year some time so will see how that goes.
Another thing that was brought to my att. Was stolen/damage stock while on show.
As anybody had to deal with this?
And do i show my work on the website or keep it off till something is sold incase others copy???
Any thoughts would great.
Cheers Nat

I have managed to upload photos from the fibre exchange into my photo album BUT I wasn't efficient enough to label them.  Then I decided I should delete the old photos and couldn't do that either.

Sandie can you tell me how to delete so that I can do a better job.

Regards Kerry.

Nat, that's probably what you'd call the yarn I made out of your yarn from the fibre exchange.  I must try and get the photos over to the album.

Hi Kerry,
I know I'm not pat but i just could not help dropping in.-sorry pat.
We have been talking about this on my spin list.
AND  It is were you take four different fibres say silk, merino, alpaca and cotton and card either by hand or drum.
Then pop off  to your trusty spinning wheel and spin the mix as one!
GORILLA YARN
I have not had time yet but it sounds like real fun and yes, i would think pats fluff an stuff would work well.
Off to have a look at pats up dates.
Hugs Nat

Hi Kerry. Spinners tell me it is all different fibres, colours, textures, spun randomly to make a yarn. My "Fluff & Stuff batts are made of all different fibre I have been carding, so they can contain mohair, alpaca, natural coloured merino, merino cross and hand dyed merino of the different microns even silk, perfect for spinning Gorilla yarn.

Has anyone seen the classes for the next Orange Forum?
So many choices, decisions, decisions!

Hi everyone.
My fluff & stuff batts look like a real winner. They make the most incredible multi-coloured felt and the Bathurst spinners have snapped up several for Gorilla yarn. I have a limited supply at this time and sell them for $12.00ea.
Also have discovered that you can make great pre-felts by rubbing pieces of batts dry between you hands, no soap, no water, no mess , quick and you can use them right away.
I will be in Canada from Oct 11th to Nov 4th so if you want any stock please order by Oct. 1st.
Have spent the last week cleaning and painting our investment house, getting it ready to sell. Every muscle is screaming and can only plan felting project while pushing the paint roller around.
Did manage to felt a piece of multi coloured batt wrapped around a plastic tube that buttons come in. Didn't felt it too hard then cut it into pieces, got beautiful rings that I will use as pre-felts.
Bulbs are starting to flower, looks like spring.

Pat M.
P.S. Have updated my web site.
