OOOHHH, now that would be the end of me

I don’t make the soaps, just wrap them in felt.

But I dye some of the wool

The felting is very addictive. I tried  to make a felt oven mitt, by wrapping my oven mitt in plastic and felting around it. It sort of worked, just a bit big. I think it will make an excellent puppet with a face sewed on.

Ciao

Hi Krishna
Do you make your own soaps?
I am a soap maker who has also discovered felt and am addicted to both.

Thanks girls for the replies re teaching.

I am going to start with nuno felting at this stage, I will supply all the gear, such as bamboo blinds, a selection of wool tops and embellishments, terylene etc. I thought 3 hours would be long enough, and I think I will start with 4 people, does $50 sound reasonable?

The students will walk out the door with a 120cm x 80cm wrap and the knowledge to make their own at home. Planning to start in Feb when the kids go back to school/

Also having my very first market stall Sat, bit nervous.

Selling nuno felted wraps, felted bags, felted soaps, wool tops which I have dyed and my friend is having a jewellery table. Should be great fun. I will advertise my classes here too.

Wish me luck.

I just can't cope with summer heat.so die in a corner somewhere.
I personally don't mind having someone drop in for a while, so long as she understands that her time so short.
I can see it would be nice for her to meet some of you ladies that can attend such happenings.
It is interstate is it not? Being that i am in victoria.
Is there a website up with prices and programmes an place to stay?
Cheers Natalie.
P.s i got a new Ragdoll stud for Christmas!
His name is "Shraz" an he is a blue bi colour.-14 weeks old.

Hi guys

Hope you are all well, I have had this email in my out box but forgot to
queue it.

As you all know we are a group for Australian feltmakers only, I have had a
request from a lady in the US who is coming over for the convergence. She
would like to get to know a few of you before she comes so that she know
some people.

What is the consensus, are we willing to allow her to join until
convergence or is it a no go????

Please let me know as soon as possible so I can email her a response.

Cheers Sandie :-)

I don't mind opening up to someone attending convergence.

I floated the idea of a convergence yahoo group to the organising
committee last winter and, while they were open to it, I have since had
second thoughts. Based on my experience with another similar group, I
decided that there wouldn't be enough demand and discussion on it.
Aussie Feltmakers is really best placed to fulfill the role of
discussion for all things and events to do with felting in Australia and
it has a life and function beyond the convergence. A convergence
discussion group would probably die when it was all over.

Hi Sandie ( and everyone else),
For what it is worth, I agree with Pat. It wouldn't be fair to allow
someone to join for a short time, then to shut them out.

Perhaps a new Convergence group could be commenced. This would allow all
prospective participants and interested people to natter & get to know
each other.

Unfortunately, I am unable to attend the convergence. This is a big
disappointment to me, but for financial and family reasons, has come
about. I was dearly looking forward to going. However, life goes on,
there will be other things, down the track, no doubt.

regards to all of you.

We could make our list open to people who have connections to Australia, those with relatives  here or Aussie's living overseas, people wanting to learn more about Australia etc. But I can't see allowing this ladies to join then cutting her off after a few months, seems very unkind. I am happy for her to become a member but I wouldn't want to see our list become too large and impersonal.

Hi Krishna

Another email that had not been queued. My only excuse I have been busy
updating webpages. and not paying a lot of attention to my out box!

This is not a good topic to get me onto, my previous job was managing a
Communtiy College, I not only did all the course programming but also
tutored as well as doing some professional development for our tutors. Only
left my job because of changes to Government funding meant the college
closed its doors otherwise I think I would still be there!

I work a little differently to Julie, I don't work on a daily rate I charge
per person, with a minimum of 6 maximum of 10. With needlefelting a
materials fee is added on to be included in the workshop fee, with wet
felting the materials fee is a separate charge not included.

The reasons I work this way:

1 - If I charge a daily rate the less people the more a person has to pay.
If a couple cancel from the workshop then I have the difficulty that a
workshop may then be cancelled due to it becoming too expensive for those
who want to participate. Many people are on tight budgets these days and
people want to know exactly what they are going to be spending. (I know I do!)

2 - For the reason above it also makes it easier on the person organising
the workshop, they know that they have to get a fixed number (min 6) at a
fixed rate and anything above that is a bonus!

3 - I also work a lot harder with 10 than with 6. Six is a walk in the
park, 10 is also easy but I am run off my feet making sure everyone is
looked after. One of the biggest complaints students have about any type of
workshop is that the tutor did not give them the attention they needed.
(Just for interest the other one is that the tutor didn't explain things
properly or clearly!) Most people can relate working harder to more money,
I have never had any complaints about fees.

Julie's rate is a very fair rate and very similar to mine though it is hard
for me to give you an exact figure as the figure is dearer if I have to
travel, but when I do I usually try and get a few bookings in a similar
area then everyone shares the costs.

Tutoring is an area that causes great contention and not only in our chosen
field. I have seen a craft here in Australia nearly wiped out through years
of poor quality tutoring and students being overcharged for that privilege,
it still hasn't recovered. There are a couple of other factors in this
crafts demise but this is one of the main areas, meanwhile the craft is
flourishing in America and England.

Are we worth our money definitely, if we tutor wel!

Sorry for the long winded reply and I hope it makes sense, if not ask away!!

Got to go, grocery shop day!

Cheers

Sandie :-)

Hi Krishna

It probably will not be relevant here, but I figure on a full day class fee of $350, have minimum of 8 students, maximum 10, then charge a materials fee to cover wool and such of about $10 each student.  That gives them a pretty cheap day of lessons for $45 each.  Lessons are usually from about 9am or 9.30am to about 3.30pm or 4.30pm, so I think that it is a good deal for the student, and gives you a reasonable return for your time.

Best Wishes
Julie

Hi Julie

Pleased to know you are home safe and sound and made it home for New
Year!!! Just sorry you didn't get a chance to stopover here, remember if
you want to do some workshops let me know I have the space and I am sure I
can rummage up some students for you no worries!

I looked at your sign off and thought really it should say "Julie who HAS
felted around the world"!!! That was quite an achievement even if things
didn't go quite to plan sometimes. You have had some amazing experiences
and we have been privileged enough for you to share them with us both the
ups and the downs! :-)

We will all be sending positive vibes to you for work, somewhere to live
but most importantly somewhere to felt!!!

Know what you mean about brown countryside, hasn't been the greatest over
here either but I am pleased to say my lawn is green today and needs to be
cut for the second time in a fortnight!!!! (We have only cut it four times
in the 12 months we have lived here it just hasn't grown!) We have had rain
for the past three days, two nights of pouring rain, though I don't believe
the catchment area is still getting enough!

Back to earth with a thud today, holiday is over now have to get in and do
some work!! :-( Paperwork first, felting second! :-(

I pray that 2007 is a year full of wonderful blessing for you Julie!

Cheers

Sandie :-)

Dear Julie,

Thankyou for the welcome, I read your homecoming email, I am sooo jealous about the silk chiffon. I went to Spotlight yesterday, just about the only fabric place in town, and they hardly had any, and it was $15 a metre. I have found some wholesalers, so I think it’s time to get in touch.

Welcome Krishna

I am Julie, and I live in Western Australia.......I don't know where yet....boy that sounds funny, doesn't it.  Truth is, I have just last week returned from overseas, where I have been travelling and teaching feltmaking for the last twelve months  almost, but now I am back, I have to find somewhere to live, somewhere to work (government says I am not old enough to retire at almost 57), and somewhere to FELT.

My first love is wet felting, but can do the odd bit of needlefelting - heck, I even taught it back in 2001 at the Convergence in Queensland, and now those people have taken it to much dizzier heights than I have ever been.

Love just playing with the wool, though, and I also love to play with the dyes, to see what I can do, and lately have been buying up heaps of books on Shibori dyeing, and plan to apply a lot of it to my felt.

Look forward to many a discussion on this list......welcome!

Hi Sandie and Listmates

Here is one for your box!!  I have arrived back in Australia.......came home to my brother's house on 28th and was in time to have new year with the family....rather a good time after missing out on having Christmas with them all.

I have no where to felt, though.  It will all have to wait until I am established into my own place.  I have to go out and look for a job also.

This Friday, I am on my way down to Busselton to catch up with a few down there, including my daughter and grandchildren, whom I still have not seen.  The family that I caught up with so far have been parents and brothers and a sister, all with nieces and nephews tagging along.

Whilst in Hong Kong, I bought 75metres of silk chiffon to "help" with my felting.  It will take me a long time, I know to get through it all, but who cares......I don't have to spend any more money on silks in the future.

Last night, we had 15mm rain.....what a pleasure it was to see it come down, after it being so dry, so I am told.  When I arrived back here, I was dismayed to see how brown the countryside looks.  We could do with more rain, and so we are all on our knees.

Best wishes to you all
Julie, who is no longer felting around the world.

Hi all,

I bought an embellisher a little while ago. I have a Babylock, love it. Can embellish more than just felt. There is an embellisher group on Yahoo, organized by Dale from the Thread studio, no affiliations.

I don’t know heaps about the others, but the Babylock has 7 needles and I think the Janome has 5. The needles aren’t cheap about $10 each, but they don’t wear out. They are fragile, just like the hand felting needles, and do break. Looks just like a sewing machine, but smaller and doesn’t have a foot. I will put up some photos soon.

A warm welcome to our group!!!

Please do put some pics up, love to see what everyone else is up to!!!

I have two girls 15 & 11, our youngest starts high school this year!!

Needlefelting is my favourite thing but I also love crocheting and machine
embroidery and have been working on incorporating these in to my work this
year.

Good luck with the nuno classes, we have some excellent felting tutors in
our group so dont hesitate to ask if you need any advice, I am sure someone
will know the answer!!

All the best for 2007!

Hi,

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year, I am a newbie.

I am 43, married, 2 girls, 10 and 8. I work night shift as a registered nurse in Coffs Harbour, we have lived here for 8 years. We moved from Castlemaine in Victoria.

I have always been a bit crafty, starting with knitting, sewing, embroidery and crochet.

Have now moved on to quilting, beading, polymer clay, machine embroidery and FELTING.

Love the felting, nuno felting, traditional felting, and NEEDLEFELTING. Love needlefelting and love the fantastic work I have seen being done through internet browsing. Now to find the time/.

I am setting up to teach nuno felting, probably when the kids go back to school,  mid Feb. A few of my friends are very interested.

At the moment I have just finished 4 nuno scarves, a needlefelted creature, a mermaid, and I am working on a large sculpture of a mermaid.

With the sculpture I have no idea what I am doing, just muddling along.

Looking forward to getting to know fellow felters ( feltists, feltresses, feltics), what are we anyways?

Will put up some photos when I get the camera working again
