Hi Julie,
great that you have a new job. I hope it fulfills your expectations, as
well as fills the coffers. How is your housing situation now? have you
got a place of your own sorted ? It will no doubt be much easier for
you when you have.

That's sad news that you can't go to the convergence. I had been looking
forward to it too, but now I'm not able to go either, for a number of
reasons, which is very disappointing as Victoria is running it this year.

I would like to extend an invitation to you if ever you are over in the
East to visit, we have a spare bedroom, with the main bathroom next
door, which you would have to yourself. I also am privileged to have a
good sized workroom, albeit too small for all that I want to put in it. :-D

(That goes for anyone else too, BTW).

I guess it has been too hot to felt over there, too. It certainly has
been here. I am also having too much problem with my back to get into it
yet. Spinning, knitting and felting that is about all I've been up to
for the last few months. rehab & ADL's ( activities of daily living for
you none nurses out there) take a lot of time and energy.

best wishes, Barb (Warragul, Victoria)

Hi Ardione,
Corriedale is excellent to use for slippers. It is hard wearing, but
flexible. If the slippers are too hairy, you can shave them using hair
clippers without the guard combs on. That will give you a lovely finish.

hope this is of some use to you :-)

warm regards, Barb in sunny Warragul, Victoria.
We've only had 5mm of rain for the last couple of weeks. It's still far
too dry. We're normally in a good rainfall area, but no good this year.
We are still over 30+ degrees . Been like that most of the summer. NO
'Doctor breeze ' here either. We still don't have it as hot as North of
the Dividing Range, though.

Hi Meg

Went to the Menora Toss and Tell yesterday for the first of the year meeting of FeltWEST, and it was very poorly attended.  Was surprised indeed.

Yes, it is a very good feeling to have begun work again, but I guess it means that I won't be able to have the time off for going to the Victorian Convergence in May.  Even now that I can afford it, I won't have the time.....oh well, such is life!!!I just wish I could afford to retire, but I spent all the money tripping around the world.

Jules would be around and about a bit better by now, I hope.
Best wishes to everyone

You would only need the faintest whisper of the wool for the merino to grab a hold of.  Almost as much as you can only detect with the eye.  It will not detract from the glorious colour of the mohair at all.  It is the same when doing a silk lap, the silk needs something to hang onto.

Give a sample a go, and see if you can do it.....

Thanks Julie. I will have to give some thought on how to use the mohair. It is just such a beautiful colour  mix that it's hard to decide. Too many things I want to try and not enough time ( or room in the House)  Hope all goes well with your new job

Hello Ardione

Being hair instead of wool, the felting of mohair needs to have some wool with it, to enable it to blend in and felt.  Maybe you could dye some wool very similar colour, and then it would look even more stunning, especially with the two different shades, and the mohair being a lot glossier, it will look spiffy.

Best of luck

Dear Fellow Felters,

Everyone must be very busy. I am looking for advice. Does anyone hand dye their own wool? If so, do you card the wool again after the dyeing to align the fibres again?

The market stall went fantastic last week, I sold a whole $5.00 worth LOL, but I did win the meat raffle, so that made up for it.

My dear Aunt Kay was staying with my mum, (who now lives next door) for a week. I hadn’t seen her for 8 years so that was great fun. But the best part was a free felting workshop. Kay teaches in Victoria, and has exhibited in art galleries, and owned textile artistry in Dromana. She taught us how to make seamless felt bags. I had tried this but my felt was always too thin, and the seams had holes, but now, yippee! I can do it.

She is sooooo clever.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone, re the dyeing.

Hey Feltettes,

I haven't said much lately because I've been flat out getting my new
business launched. This isn't strictly felt-related but it is an arts
and crafts website. I've just launched a new "mega-Zine" aimed at
emerging women artists. There are projects in a mixture of media
including textiles. Felt will make it in eventually! The point of
difference is the number of articles about the transformative power of
art - how art makes us better people.

Take a look: www.go-make-art.com

PS Am I supposed to put "comm" in the email heading for a post like this?

Hello Ardione

With my wall hangings, I generally make a resisted sleeve at the top, and disguise it with embellishment whilst felting it.  That way, a rod can be slipped into it no worries, after it is done, and no one can see.

Another way of doing it, is to resist join some tabs at the top, if you like that way, so that you can also hang it onto a rod.

If you like to put a backing onto your wall hangings, you can sew a pocket onto the top of the lining for the rod to go through.

The list is really endless.......have fun figuring it all out.

Best wishes

Julie, in a bushfire ravaged and smokey skied Perth

I just use the bubble wrap to get a nice clean straight edge, by wetting down my felt, then folding it over with the bubble wrap.  Lovely and straight, and it is all done before the rubbing or rolling is done.

I am still not doing any felting at present.....too busy going to interviews for a new job, and trying to satisfy those beaurocats in Social Security by humouring them and attending the "Job Search Methods Classes".....although I could teach them how to go about it myself.

I miss the felting though.......and seem to be forgetting more ideas than I have been able to put into practice lately.

Keep cool
Best wishes to all
Julie

Hi Everyone,
To answer, Ardione, there are no rules as to what you Should do in
felting. However, one way I manage to get reasonably straight edges is
to use dropsheet plastic under the felt ( on top of the blind, bubble
wrap, etc). If you place a piece large enough to fold in comfortably
over the edges, you can either a) put some more on top & felt, or b) put
your net on top to felt. I like to wrap the edges over as soon as it is
starting to hold together, & then the net can be removed.

By making a neat flat parcel, then rolling it up as usual, you will get
a good edge. It will also help to keep in the moisture. It is easy to
turn the package around to roll in a different direction.

One way that I was shown in laying down fleece, was to use a garden
spray bottle with a fine mist sprayer that has a water+ small amount of
soap mixed in it. a) Soap down the plastic on the rolling mat.
b) Place down 1st layer of fleece, then spray it with water/soap mix
until damp through( not wet)
c) Place down 2nd layer of fleece cross-ways & spray, as before. ( if it
is just damp, it will be easy to lay the second and subsequent layers)
d) Repeat as above for chosen number of layers.
e) place net on and rub soap bar gently over it. spray on some more
water, if necessary. This can all be then rolled for about 5 mins.
f) Remove the net as soon as the fibres can be pulled up into a tent,
then wrap in plastic.
nb. the net can be eliminated and plastic used instead, as the fibres
have mostly been pre-wet. The top layer will only require a light spray.
It is also possible to pre -soap + dampen the top plastic, if the area
prepared is not too large.

This method drastically cuts down the length of time to roll.

It is all subjective, really, as we find what is the way we are
comfortable with. I also find that I may do things differently,
depending on what I'm making.

Warm regards to all
Barb Mewburn.

PS it's 33 deg inside here at the moment ( West Gippsland, SE Victoria)
It's too hot to felt, so I have been spinning though, & have spun,
knitted and felted my first item ( an alpaca hat)In the washing machine
( cheated).

BTW,Kerry, i'm up & off on the Roberta. It's excellent with the polymer
bushes, the jumbo flyer & pause button. Ian at Ertoel did a great job
refurbishing it. It's like new :-) He tells me that it will go forever.
Thank you for encouraging me & allowing me to get set up so reasonably.

Hi everyone,
How is everyone. Things are hectic up here in mpaleton, with going back to school and work and all the other things that happen in life.

I have found time to do a bit of felting today and have made something (not sure what it will be yet) using pre felts. I was wondering how to get really straight clean edges on a flat peice of felt.  Can you treat it like a prefelt and trim it part way into the rolling??
I hope everyone has found some time to creat.
