He everyone, good to meet you Purple. I live in Warragul. I've been a
member since the inception, however, I've been inactive for a while,
as very little felting has been going on in my workroom. I've been
doing some spinning on my Roberta electric spinner, knitting then
felting it.

Due to chronic back pain, felting has been on the back burner.
However, I'm going to Bendigo on Saturday, I shall be demonstrating on
the Victorian Feltmakers table on Sat afternoon and Sun morning. Come
and see us. It's a great group to join.

I'm looking forward to meeting Natalie at last & re-aquainting myself
with Pat.

Who else is going? Are you Stacey? I can't remember if you said you
were at the last meeting of the VFI (Victorian Feltmakers Inc, for the
uninitiated)

I had better get some bits and pieces ready for the weekend. I usually
take far too much, but this time I hope to be more organised

Warm regards to all out there.
Barb Mewburn.

Hello Fellow Aussie Feltmakers

Welcome to Purple!  Purple and Burgundy are my favourite colours and I seem to see these two colours popping up in everything that I make, just about.  So, it seems that you are within a circle of friends already by joining this group.  Welcome, and I hope that we will have many discussions on line.

Natalie, it is nice to have you back on board....sorry I have been a bit quiet too of late, but it is nice to read that your life is getting back together.

I have been in a world of limbo since returning from overseas.....I lived out of a suitcase for the past 6 months at my BIL's place, looking after his house while he went away for 2 of them.  Then a unit came up not very far away from where my Mum and Dad live, so I was lucky enough to be able to lease it and have been busy all this past week moving in and also working at a new job for the past 3 weeks.

So....when I finally finish my unpacking, I can get serious again about the feltmaking, which I have been missing doing.

The embellesher that I bought sits there patiently waiting for me to have a crack at it too.....all in good time.

Meg, I am glad that you really enjoyed Chelsea and England in general.   But welcome home anyway.

I am sorry Sandie that I cannot offer to become List Mother in your place......I operate only a lap top computer, hardly any time with my shift working job and I do not get to this machine every day......and besides, after being at a computer at work all day, one does not like to get on it for very long in the evening.

Wendy, I am interested in doing another fibre swap......glad that you can take up the spot and co-ordinate that one.....Just let us know the details.

Keep the felting dreams alive

Julie

Hi

Unfortunately I was not born Purple, but i was once Lisa and now have evolved into Purple (only my Mum still calls me Lisa). My friends started calling me that to tell me apart from my best friend also named Lisa i have had Purple Hair since i was 14, Lisa got Blondie as a nic but it didn't stick. Now i have to keep up the  purple hair and well everything else, so as not to confuse anyone, but i love the colour and seem to pull a lot of positive energy from it.

I am looking at my plans for next weekend i think i will come and say hello, i look froward to it.

I am so new ideas and insperation fly though my head but not too sure on how the quality will hold up to everyone else, but i am happy to swap and trade. I am very keen on just meeting people and talking about my new found love... I will post pictures of some of the things i have madelater, as i have no pictures here at work.

While i don't sell anything at the moment, i have always made things and given away to friends. A few years ago i decided to put my mark on things. I came up with the name 'By the Hand of Purple', because everything i do is by my hands! I sew a little visible purple hand on everything i make then the words hidden somewhere on the garment. At a party i went to a few months ago there was one moment  where i looked around and saw 5 little hands waving from my friends clothes and bitz. it made me swell with pride!

Which brings me to a question... as i do plan to make a few things for a joint market stall (my friend is a ceramic artist also wants to sell some things) i would like to put my lables on the bits i sell, does anyone know where i can get a small runn of cloth lables with my mark on them? what do other people do to lable their products?

anyway friday home time... i am sure i'll think of 100's of more questions...

Our lives can be so busy and sometimes very distressing  ( no I don't have bad news) but I do feel that it would be nice to try and bring the fun and interesting chats back to this great group.I have been a member from the start and have enjoyed getting to know the wonderful and very talented felters,   some of whom we have shared their  ups and downs with. An oddly, I hold close to my heart even though I have never met them! As I am poor at the written word my posts can be a bit lacking in true thoughts.lol

I think sandie has always done a great job with the list and no, I do not know who the next list mum will be.  Thanks Sandie.

Now, what I would love to see again  is some more interest in the group activities .  Wendy offered to do a fibre swap, but I don't remember  anything happening-sorry if I have missed it??
I turned 40 this past June and I am sure some of my brain cells went to sleep! If everyone is sick of a normal fibre swap, how about an exotic or colour theme?
What about an winter solstice or summer one or a photo comp of fibre animals with a needle felted animal that's in the photos or a felted flower swap? A felted summer top swap? Another scarf swap with a theme?
I was even thinking of on line class of some sort with maybe web cams or something every now an then.???

Another thought was ( and I know we are oz only ) but to have NZ folks to boost numbers? I don't really know why just thought of the spin list.

I can't remember if I told you but I have now made it into the retail side of felt making and I am thrilled to be selling to (so far) a couple of shops and I now plan to take it another step by seeing other shop owners and changing my website and getting out an about!

All this has made me think about my business card and my name.

After much discussion it was felt that Nemcala heart felted creations was not right and it has now been changed to HeartFelted Creations. This I found very hard as Nemcala has a lot of meaning. So how did everyone else come up with their name? Another thing that has come up, was fibre artist. I still feel this is right but others do not.I don't use the word textile because I don't work with woven fabric. What do we all think?

Well, that will do for tonight.

Take care all
Hugs Natalie. :)

Hi Natalie
You should give hat making a go. I make all my hats by needle felting first then wet felting over the hat shapers, no rolling , and you can needle felt your design before wet felting and it will stay were you want it. The Hatshapers are measured in inches. Men's styles are larger then women's so a man's medium is a lot bigger then a women's medium. I have just made a small fedora and it would be a medium /large for a women.
I can needle felt a hat in a couple of hours and wet felt it in less then an hour as it is a least 75% felted before you wet it.
The needle felting can be done anywhere, while watching TV etc.
When I was at Wagga in Feb I meet a women from Germany who uses hat shapers to shape her knitted and felted hats.

Will look forward to meeting you at Bendigo.

Well done pat. That's great news and I will look forward to meeting you at last.
Is anyone else going?

Pat, with the hat shapes, I was wondering how one sizes them? Are they all different sizes?
I have been asked to do hats and have so far only done  bennies . I really don't have a desire to do them but am noting going to knock back work.

Your batt's sound lovely and look great on the website.I am sure I will come home with some.

Petlyn's are really nice folks , I have bought alpaca and needle felting tools from them over the years.

Hi Krishna.
The application say you are "encouraged to have your own public risk insurance". As I am a business I have insurance and it covers us both at our place of business and away such as classes and shows. As soon as I started selling I got insurance, especially product insurance. Better safe then sorry.

Hi Natalie
There is a new felting machine just come on the market from Snowy Creek Engineering, they will be demonstrating it at Bendigo.

If you have a front loading washing machine you can felt in it, no rolling. You can find directions by doing a Google search. I have tried it and it works.

Hi Krishna,
I am in victoria not far from castlemaine, so if you did some of my work it must be a resale?
Most likely it was sandie's as her name is Felt from the Heart.

Good luck with your sale. I would like to know more about your merino  and corriedale tops.
I am always after nice tops at a good price now that I am felting four out of seven days a week, I have never felted so much! Lol
I still find I can only make three scarves  in  8 hours. It takes me ages to layout/design .
I think I will really have to look into a rolling machine.
Cheers
Natalie.

Hi Natalie,

This is a quiet group. Where are you? I seem to remember seeing some felted creations and I think they were heartfelt, in Coffs Harbour.

Love some of your ideas. I think everyone is very busy. I know I haven’t been doing much felting, even though it is winter.

We are having a garage sale in the morning, anyone in the area very welcome. I will be selling (hopefully), wool batts, corriedale and merino wool tops.

Email me if you want the address.

Bye for now.

Hi everyone,

Will it was a long wait but I do have a stall at the Bendigo Sheep And Wool Show. If any of you are going, stop by and say hello. I will be at 21a in the Noble Pavilion. That is the same place as the Fashion show, but I am at the other end of the building.

I have been flat out trying to get stock ready for the show. Made two hats and have a third almost finished. They are sample of what can be done on the Hatshapers I will be selling there. Also trying to get a bunch of needle felted hat kits done. Hope I have time to demonstrate needle felted hat making.

Will have lots of batts and lots of "One Off" blended batts. Did one today with moss, eggplant and black, delicious!

I make swing tags  on the computer for the things I sell. Don't forget to put fibre content and care instructions on your tags as it is required by law.

Have sold 5 felted hats in the last couple of weeks and am very pleased with that.

I would love to do an exchange of something like a small bag, suitable for a phone or the like. Hopefully I will have more time after Bendigo.

Hi All

Sorry I haven't written for a while.

Since a health scare in late March I have been focusing on my well being
and not my email and I feel that our group has suffered greatly.

I have decided that it is time to hand the reins over to someone who I am
sure can do a much better job than I and put some life back into our group!

For the past couple of months I have been focusing on just trying to relax
and knitting a lot its been really therapeutic! :-) I have hardly picked up
a felting needle, and for those who know me well will know that that is
quite earth shattering, needle felting has been my life for the last 6 years.

Looking after the group is not a difficult job, you just need energy,
something I don't have a lot of at the moment. :-(

Members need to be approved as we have made this a group that is Australian
only so we have restricted membership. We do get lots of enquiries from
overseas but group concensus is that there are other groups to meet this
need so we would stay southern hemisphere based. You don't have to organise
a lot but its great if ideas can be thrown at the group occaisionally ie
exchanges etc.

I am not planning on going anywhere, I am still going to be part of the
group but do thinks its time for a change of management.

If you are interested and think you can do the job, can you please email me
OFFLIST at gordon1963@... so we can chat.

If we have more than one applicant I will put up the profiles and you guys
can vote.

Enjoy your weekend all!

Cheers

Sandie :-)

Well a BIG hello to everyone!

So sorry I have been dead for a while.

I have manage to get life back in order so I can felt and take the next step in selling my work to shops.

This I have done, only a couple so far but am working on a folder to display my art in.

Welcome back Meg, Wish I had been in your suitcase.lol
I have family in England-mums side and have not been back since I was 12 years old.
I would love to go to the Chelsea flower show one day. I don't have the garden that I would like due to little water and fibre animals but maybe one day... .
I am also learning to digitize  embroidery files.-hard.lol
I have add a few new pets too, a female alpaca ( sterling), so looking forward to babies!
A new foal- divine an Arabian stock horse and as it turns out my old mare is in foal to my last stallion!

I now have a new car, so I just might make it down to some felt meetings soon.

Oh... And for me a big thing was that I turned 40 on the 9th of June! JUST cannot believe it!!
Does this now mean I have to remove all the little girl things in my room and stop wearing hipster jeans??

I was also wondering if there are any books or somebody that teaches stretching of felt as you make it- For  good drape/handle?
Wendy  - Yes I would still be interested in the fibre swap and I am now only working in tops so you can all breath easy.lol

This leads me ask where do folks buy there fibre wholesale?
I am getting 23 micron merino for $9.00 per 105 grams but would like to find a better price. The merino is machine dyed in solid colour's.

Well folks that's about it for now
Hugs to all

Good Morning All
Very cold start today, almost -3 and the fire wood is frozen to the wheelbarrow and the shed door is frozen shut.

Wendy, you have been so busy, I got 4 felted hats of to Alice, 2 for sale 2 for the competition.

I will be going to Bendigo as a trader, I hope, haven't heard if I have a space yet.
Sold lots of stock at the convergence and after so trying to get my stock up again,

Have done a complete revamp of my web site , or should say my web master Bevlea Ross has. If any of you would like me to put links to your site from mine, I would be happy to do it but need the information right away.

Only done very little felting, slippers for year old granddaughter and one scarf, trying the felting in the front loader washing machine method no rolling -Hey! It works.  Tried a batt as well with good results but think I can improve on it.Didn't even wet the batt. Have any of you tried it?

My daughter showed me felt items advertised in donna hay magazine the winter addition. Bags, folded not stitched that opens to a floor mat, cushions, Flowers , place mat with cut out design and , my favourite, a felt bird house. Lots of new felting book coming on line. Take a look at Amazon . Felt seems to be the flavour of the month.

Did any of you see the felting machine at Convergence, what did you think? Is it worth the price?

Have Hatshpers on my web site and I hope to make a demo hat for each one so lots of work ahead.

Happy felting.

Hi all

Welcome back Meg. The list's been very quiet lately. Hopefully everyone is busy feltmaking.

Good to hear from you Julie. I hope some of our rain comes your way soon.

As well as being the wettest winter we have had in Sydney for many years, it is also the coldest - which is great for making and wearing felt. I find it hard to even look at wool in the heat of summer :-)

Your wall hanging sounds intriguing - please post some photos when you are finished. And have fun with your Huskystar!

I have been busy since I got back from the Convergence. I have made one felted hat for the Alice Springs Beanie Competition and 9 felted hats for their market. I also sent off 3 scarves which I made last year to the Melbourne Scarf Festival. I'm hoping that some of it will sell so that I can finance my new Ashford Drum carder.

I'm also hoping to make a nuno scarf, a wallhanging and a sleeveless jacket in the next 10 days for the Woolcraft Competition in Bendigo but I think I'm being a bit optimistic!

I've also been taking part in lots of craft swaps on a world wide craft website called Craftster. I recently received a lot of Kool Aid from the USA (for those who don't know this is a brightly coloured powdered drink mix which I would never drink, but which is great for dyeing wool) so I'm going to experiment with some dyeing of tops and silk hankies.

Is anyone still interested in the fibre swap? I'm happy to organise it if people would like to go ahead.

Hope everyone else is well - let us know what you've been up to.

Wendy

Hi Meg

Welcome back to Aus.  Bet it is cold down there in Augusta....it is cold here in Perth, except for the days, which have been really nice.  A pity that we have not had the rain, though.

Not a lot has been happening on the list lately.....where is everyone???

Job searching here again, as I have finished a few temp jobs that I have had this year.

Did not go to the Feltwest Retreat this year....I only got notification of it a week before it was to happen, so it was too late to put in my application, as all the places would have been taken.  As it was, I could not go anyway, as my mother, who is 85, gave us all a big fright and ended up in Hospital, so that took all of my time, taking my Dad to and from Fremantle hospital every day to visit her.  She is now home from hospital, doing fine now, thank goodness.

I have been doing a little bit of just flat pieces of felt, which I have been shibori dyeing afterward.  For a project I have in mind.....wall hanging. Won't say any more until it is finished.

In the meantime, I have been trying to finish off some of the UFO's left behind that my late sister started.  She had started knitting two garments for her grand children, and I decided to finish them off, they are done in homespun that she has been working on.  I will also have to finish spinning the wools that she also started.  I have also been busy trying to sort out her craft room, just to see what is what and who can have what.  I am going to have my old spinning wheel back again, and the wool that I gave her before leaving for abroad, and I am also going to have all her dyes.  I will try to sell all her garments that she had for sale prior to her untimely death, and see if I can secure a buyer for her weaving gear that she has left in there.

I went to the Craft Fair in the Convention Centre and met with Julie (from Coloured by Jules) there.  I also purchased a Huskystar Embellisher, which I will  be picking up tomorrow from Teena's in Bibra Lake.  Fun times ahead!!!

Take care, keep safe and make lots of felt!

Cheers to Everyone!

Julie

Hi to all,
Back from the U.K. Great holiday and lots of
travelling. Did not see any felt. WE spent our time
looking at gardens. Monet's in France. Just beautiful
and mind blowing. Even got into the house. Chelsea
Flower Show. Wall to wall people but worth it. Just
tremendous. The Eden project and the Lost Gardens of
Heligan. Apart from castle gardens and catching up
with old friends in my home town of Aberdeen Scotland.
How are you all? What have you been doing? I
actually made a piece of felt today with a whale theme
for our inaugural spin -in on Saturday. The whale watch
season has started here in Augusta W.A.

Regards to all the feltetts!! Meg

Yes it was a great week! Thanks for all your work in making it happen Stacy.

It was good to see the members from Aussiefeltmakers, including Pat who came as a trader.

Before I went to the Convergence I had done virtually no felting this year due to family problems, and my craft room was in a totally chaotic state. But I have come home from the Convergence feeling very inspired and motivated. I am full of ideas for the competition and exhibition pieces that I need to produce in the next few weeks. And I am currently cleaning up my craft room so that I have enough space to work in.

I would love the next Convergence to be in New Zealand - I have wanted to go there for many years. And the NSW Convergence delegates have been talking about starting up a NSW Feltmakers Association so that we can host the Convergence in 2011 in NSW!

Hi all

Wendy and Kerry and I were all at the Feltmakers Convergence in Beechworth, along with just over 100 other feltmakers from around Oz and NZ. We had a ball! You can see some of my photos if you start at my blog and follow the link to my Flickr album at the end of the current post.

http://www.studioastarte.com.au/ispirato/

The highlights for me were the social events. There was lots of dressing up and fantastic felt to goggle at. Workshops were good. Our aims were education, socialization and inspiration.

No one put their hand up to run the next one in two years but the Kiwis are going home to discuss the possibility.

Hi Ardione and all other felters

I have been known to use only 47 grams for a complete shawl that measured 2.5metres long and 75 cm wide at finished product.  In other smaller scarves, I weigh out 30 grams only, and try to use less than that, but sometimes I use it all.  I love to try to get them gossamer fine with no holes if possible, because I love the challenge of creating something really very fine.  And besides, the weather over here in the Wild West, does not call for thicker scarves, especially if you happen to be experiencing night sweats or day sweats, or any other type of sweats at the age of .......(maturity).

Best wishes

know it varies greatly depending on what you are trying to acheive and
if you are doing nuno or not. Any feed back would be greatly
