Hi Wendy.
I have had a look at all the attachments so far and sandie is right when she said they can stuff up your good sewing machine!
One really does need a needle only machine as the lint or in our cases the fibre gobbles up the motor parts sort off.lol

I only ever sew my hand felt items on my singer treadle machine and the amount of stuff I clean out is amazing!
I find all the other sewing machines just cost far too much to have damage.
The sewing/embroidery machine I want when I win tatts is $8,000. Bucks!!!

Honestly, if you are going to buy an needle felt machine try to lay-by the babylock and I think you will be really happy in the end.
This is what I am doing.

As to needle felt  machine groups there is two that I am on but nothing much is happening.
I must say, I do feel some what left out, as it seems nearly all of you have an embellisher already! Lucky ducks.

Sleep tight
Nat

Hi Nat

I am following this discussion with interest. Sounds like the babylock is the way to go.

Someone told me recently that there is an embellishing attachment for the Bernina sewing machine. Does anyone know if this is the case & what it is like?

Happy Sunday to all!

First I would like to say THANK YOU again to all who posted to drop in their thoughts on this subject.

Well after much chatting and googleing/ Is this a word???  Anyway, I have come to this..... I am looking to use an machine often and most likely for some hours? This being said, I thought I would not want a machine that was nosier  as it worked and would be easy to change needles/move felt around under it.

I  was hunting for a fast machine and in the end one that would cost less to buy needles for.

I now feel that the only useful production machine of the home needle machines is the ..... Drum roll...... BABYLOCK EMBELLISHER.

Now please nobody get up set as they all work fine, I have just nutted it out to what I need.

The babylock is the fastest that I have found in the range, being its 1000 rpm as to the janome is 900 rpm.
The babylock has 7 needles/ janome has 5 needles.
With babylock you can replace any one of the 7 needles. Janome you MUST replace the whole five at the same time. Cost is $30.00 as to baby who is $8.00 per needle or you can have them cut or you cut as Barb has said.
Next, you have more lift/room under the needles with baby than janome.
The sad thing is the baby cost more being $750.00 , where janome is $400.00.

If I was not to buy a babylock, I would buy a husky star, although I don't think the motor  is as strong and there is only 5 needles.

Brother makes an attachment but it only works on the QP range of machines.
I am told the husky and the singer one are the same machine, different skin.

The janome does come with a DVD and a single hole plate and an extra set of 5 needled, but the not being able to change one or two needles , I think would be a killer in the end.

So there you have it.

Stay safe, have fun

Hugs

Hi Sandie

Yes that sounds like a very valid point. It looks like the attachment only works on recent Berninas - which are probably quite pricey.

I have a 30 year old Bernina  - but the attachment probably doesn't fit that one!

Hi Wendy

There are more attachments becoming available for machines but I would
approach them with caution. I have concerns about the damage that fluff etc
does to the inner workings of machinery, fluff can wreak havoc especially
if you miss cleaning abit out. You have to remove parts of your machine, ie
bobbin race to use the attachments. If your machine is a cheapie that you
dont mind stuffing up I would say go for it but I am not prepared to
possibly wreck my machine using an attachment.

I have tried to get more information on this issue but of course
manufacturers are not going to bad mouth their products, so no one will
give me a straight answer. Had a lengthy discussion with Kirry Toose re
this issue (she is using an attachment) but she is a spokesperson for
Bernina so she isn't going to say anything bad either.

If you get any other info I would be interested to know as this is a common
topic of discussion amongst my students.

Good luck.

Sandie :-)

Hi all,

I have the babylock. There is also a yahoo group for embellishers, it is very quiet, but they may be able to help with info as well.

Have been working on the mermaid sculpture today. Tomorrow I will take some photos to post to the group. I am  sort of making it up as I go along.

The doll and bear show this weekend at Coffs is where I will have a trading table. I am desperate to finish her to put in the show. Fast running out of time. The theme for the show is The Wedding, so I am hoping to put a tiara on her head with a sea green beaded veil. Why I always have these fantastic ideas as time is running out I don’t know. LOL

Hi Purple,
the AGM part of the meeting is where the office bearers stand down &
new ones are elected. We also have discuss a bit about the future & the
past. that's all quite brief. We have a general meeting, and a share
lunch, where we bring a plate or dish of food to share- this only
happens at the AGM & Christmas, at the other meetings we take our own.
There will be a speaker & demo. there will be time to buy fleece, etc. &
for members to use the library. Lots of chatter & laughter amongst
ourselves.

At the meetings, we also have show and tell, which can often be hilarious.

We don't have hands on work at these meetings, there wouldn't be time.
As it is, they take all day, with one thing and another. We are about to
trial work days on the 'off 'month, as the general meetings are
bi-monthly. there will be a charge of $5.00 on the work days, for hall
hire.

Annette Lizza will no doubt be coming, she would be happy to share
travel with you, if she is, I'm sure. Do you have her number? If not,
I'll contact her to check what she's doing, if you like.

There are several workshops going on throughout the year, which may
interest you also. Check the website & the ongoing Newsletters for info.

I hope this is of some use to you,

Best wishes, Barb M.

BTW, I like your mittens & the embroidery is superb.

Hi Nat,
You would do better to get off at Burwood station( the one after
Hartwell), then come out at the end closest to the engine outward bound,
where Trent st junctions with Lithgo pde. Turn left up here, continue
over Burwood rd ( tram tracks) up Highfield rd to the next
corner,(Milverton rd. where the entrance to the church hall is for the
meeting. Melways 60E5 or Google Earth map the Church of Christ,
Milverton rd.Hartwell. Your V-line ticket will take you all the way now,
ain't it great that we aren't discriminated as much with fares now?

You will be able to buy fibre there. We have a good library for members
too.

We look forward to seeing you there.

love Barb

This is wonderful to see all the tip bits and chit chat happening!

Thanks Sandie for offering to help out too.

I will get back to you this week about wool as well.

Barb, is the A.G.M near the hartwell train line? I use to live not far many years ago and worked at the red rooster that was on the corner not far from the American  made ice cream shop! - best ever ice cream!!!
I was thinking of getting a train.

I am ALWAYS happy to do ANY swaps, so just make sure I know what an when and then count me in.-ok?

I bought some wonderful fabric at our Bendigo spotlight  that has embroidered roses on the edge . I am going to make some nuno felted summer tops to sell at the children's shop and for myself, I also want to do a small fashion show with felted garments some time over the next 12 months.

I have also bought the book of polly sterling felt yardage and I bought an textile heat tool with a number of add on's for artful work.

NOW to journals, well I always keep a book with two colour pens next to my bed , as I often wake up with ideas on felt items.
If I do think of anything I will jot it down before I forget.lol

I am now just getting into the idea of making a textile cover and using hand made paper for the pages. I have a friend that makes lovely books/journals.

I go scrap booking every Thursday with my said friend and we have started to join the two ideas to make a textile type scrapbook.

On a non felt thing, I am very happy to say that my mare Cinta had a filly foal last night and I was allowed to see the whole birth!!- first for me.

Back to embellishers, Barb I went to see your machine but found the price at 750. Out of my budget. The janome is only 350. And I can not find a local dealer for the babylock. Do you think the brother attachment would fit an p.e 150 embroidery machine that needs a new hook?

Well I think that's it for now

I always have a journal in my bag or within reaching distance. i have some water colour pencils that i use so i can get colours and more details in a little roll that comes in handy. I'm sure people are a little shocked when i sit and sketch  / paint at random places around Melbourne but my friends are use to it now.

My newest is of little quick felting designs i may one day get around to making to sell...oh please just give me a few more hours in a day!

I would be happy to do some swapping, i could also try and scan some images at work if people are interested. I'm not too sure how much sense someone else would make of them but anyone is welcome to give it a go.

How did you go Ardionne,
Did you get any advice? This is not something I know heaps about, but I know there are products available at places like Spotlight or Lincraft. I think there are names like washaway, solvy, and I can’t remember any more. I know when I made a silky material quilt I used whisper weft, but I left it on the material. It was great and made a huge difference, it was so much easier to sew.

hay all

thanks to you all for the amazing tips and links, it has been so helpful!

felting has been on the back burner for me but tomorrow i am firing up and braving the cold in my studio to felt the day away.

Barb thanks heaps for the invite i will do everything in my power to come to the AGM i can't wait. Forgive my stupiditiy but what does the agm actually involve? I'm guessing some demos and trading? Do i need to bring anything? I'll do a quick trip to the website now... maybe all my answers are there... it will be good to catch up again.

I have attached a picture of a pair of gloves i made for a friends 30th. This wass the first pair i made and i was shocked at how well it worked, felt is so forgiving, i also stitched on a dragonfly with cotton and a pearl filament to add a little special touch.

i am really grateful for all the links, it is not so easy to find good sites and i am finding it all really helpful!

Hi Natalie,
I have a Janome. So far quite happy with it. Moving
the piece while embellishing is o.k.and you can move
it backwards or forwards & sideways, if you do it
carefully and do not jerk the material around. Am
still "playing" with it but I can see the
possibilities. I have Val Campbell- Hardings book
Embellish and Stitch which is full of ideas. Hope this
is of help to you. Was at an Indigo workshop with
Trudy Pollard yesterday and I think I am hooked
(again I hear you say lol) Looks great on silk for
Nuno . Will be busy this weekend!!! Meg
in rather cool Augusta W.A.

Hi ladies.

Ardione,  how about trying an iron on stabilizer or maybe a wash away spray adhesive .
I personally have only pin my silk down onto my cardboard cutting board.lol
Then marked lines with soft pastel because it washes out- but marks easy, then I un pin an cut very carefully.
Good luck.

On another note maybe we should have a tip or technique a week/fortnight/month? Then we can either try it out or at least chat about it?
I was thinking to of maybe a challenge once a month with a small prize?
I would be happy to sponsor a prize.

Hi Krishna,

I haven't had any other advice yet.  Thanks for the information I'll have to take a trip to the coast next week and see what I can come up with.

Is there anyone out there that would be interested in a Journal exchange.?? Or maybe a handmade key ring (though I think I'd need to put thought into that one).

take care

How did you go Ardionne,

Did you get any advice? This is not something I know heaps about, but I know there are products available at places like Spotlight or Lincraft. I think there are names like washaway, solvy, and I can’t remember any more. I know when I made a silky material quilt I used whisper weft, but I left it on the material. It was great and made a huge difference, it was so much easier to sew.

Great advice, Barb.

Definitely so regarding the making of large felt. I have also noticed that when you embellish non natural fibres onto other fibres they can be pulled off again.

Hi Julie,

Nice to hear from you. You sound very busy. The embellisher is great for all sorts of different things.

I am thinking about making felt squares in different colours, embellishing them and sewing together.

Combining my patchwork and felting together. In my spare time, of course.

Do others keep an ideas book? I think I should, at this stage I have 3 or 4 notebooks around, that I can never find.

Hi Natalie & everyone else curious about the embellishing machines,
I bought a Pierrot embellishing machine (from Embroidery Source in
Melbourne, you can buy one online with a 30 day moneyback trial) as it
was 1/2 the price of a Babylock Embellisher. It only has 5 needles,
which are all individually replaceable. It is also possible to break
ordinary felting needles, but you would need a vice, or a very good pair
of pliers and a strong, steady hand, as they are very hard & brittle.(
bad grammar, I know, but You get the drift?)You would also have to be
accurate as to the length of your needles.

The other thing to look out for, besides the fact that there are fewer
needles, is that there is only 1 larger hole for all the needles, with
many of the embellishing machines( including the Pierrot). The Babylock
Embellisher -TM has 7 individual holes. The single hole may have
implications with causing a hole to develop in the fabric you are
creating if overworked in one area.

It is also possible to work with 1or 2 needles when creating some fine
detailing on your work.

The essential thing to remember, before investing in these machines is
that they are a great tool for* embellishing* they *don't *however,
save time when making a sheet of felt. I've tried this, & while it is
possible & can make a strong base, one has to understand that to do so
entails doing a crosshatch of lines only a few mm wide next to each
other. This is Very time consuming & a large base fabric may initially
be much quicker to produce by wet felting or needle felting by hand with
a multineedle tool.

If you are on a very tight budget, take a look at _www.feltcrafts.com_ .
When I was first looking, I bought one of these conversion attachments &
converted an old machine. This worked ok, but entailed sacrificing a
machine, rendering it unuseable for any normal sewing, so you would have
to make sure that it was an old machine. This attachment requires the
use of a cut piece of felting foam( supplied with the attachment) as a
base, instead of the needle plate. It was only $US 50, so is affordable.

Another very useful site is www.tryourdesigns.com/Felting_machines.htm.
This site discusses many different felting machines with their pros &
cons. It also gives tips and sells the cut needles, etc. The cut needles
can be used in all embellishing machines that have individual needles.

I hope this is of some use to you in making a decision.

Happy felting,

Warm regards, Barb Mewburn, Warragul

Hi Nat and all

I have been subscribing to Echoes for some years now, and have even had some of my work published in the mag.

when I went to England, I stayed with the Editor of the Echoes, and she picked me up from the Airport when I got there.  I also met quite a lot of the other girls that are involved in the magazine and went to a felting day with them all.  Mieke is a lovely person, and had me felting with Herdwick wool whilst there.  I had a ball there and must say that I have made many friends from there.

I also missed out on a couple of days of meeting with Andrea Graham of Canada when I was there.  She is a very talented artist, as were a lot of the girls over there.

When in America, I went to a workshop in Rensslaeville, in New York state, near Albany, and we did pictures by needlefelting and then wet felting when the wool was all needled into place.  Also whilst in Oregon, I stayed with Pat Spark, who taught me how to do the same, but their methods differ in some ways.  Pat has also written a book on it, calling it Watercolours.....I have the book.  Sharon Costello teaches the other method.

Take care all

Hi Nat and others

I recently bought myself the Huskystar embellisher, and I am now doing a job with it that I never thought that I would ever do.  My mother, who is a very keen patchworker, has a project going where she is cutting out different shaped leaves, putting them onto fabricstrips and stitching around them to give them an "edge".  I suggested that something else could be done, and now I am embellishing them with green and brownish wool around the edges of the leaves.  They look cute, and something different for her patchwork, indeed.  Who says that the world of patchworking and felting cannot be combined?

All the best to everyone

Hi everyone,

I was wanting to know about cutting silk fabric to a pattern. I remember reading somewhere about backing it with something to prevent it from sliding around. Then removing the backing at some stage (maybe after sewing??). Does anyone have a tried and tested method or I would even be happy with a vague idea,

take care

Hello everyone,

Been offline for a few days. Back on track.

Have made a couple more felt scarves this week. Hope to make a felted bag as a sampler for a class, I am holding late August.

Hi Natalie,

I have a baby lock embellisher, bought it a few years ago, before they became cheaper. I am reasonably happy with it. I believe you can use hand felting needles in the machines, just break them off to fit. This will be much cheaper. My mum has one too, her only issue is one of needles keeps dropping out, not sure why. Very annoying.

I don’t know about other members but I am very curious where other members live. Could people put there town, suburb, etc in their signature lines. Just out of interest.

\Thanks.

Hope everyone is felting like crazy

Hi all.
I am about to buy an embellisher but who's brand do I buy???

I can get the husky star for $500 and the singer one the same price.

I can also buy the janome for $400 with 50 cash trade in on an old brother that's not working. So then it would cost me $350.

Now the other machines have indervgual needs while the janome has to replace all 5 at there same time.

And the other machines have a up stop while the janome you have to turn.

Cost of needles are $8.00 for one or $30 for the five set.
Has anybody use the huskystar or the janome? What do you know or think?

Thanks for yoyr thoughts.

p.s thanks pat I have the batt.

Evening ladies. Did I not see somebody asking about the pebbles?
I have seen this artist work before and I thought in her blog she said they are needle felted first then wet felt in the picture.
