Greetings all

The suggestion of putting the fibre into plastic sealed bags would be a good one, then passing the parcel around, to add and subtract seems to me to be the only one open to one such as me with allergies.
I have just come from the doctor, where I had my flu injection (now have a very sore arm) and to get more stuff for my asthma.  Oh I do wish that I did not have this problem....it is limiting.
Glad it is the weekend, I have a yen to start the third panel of the quilt...I only wish that I did not have to go out to work for a living, then I could devote all my time to my feltmaking and my Reiki.....but things have been mapped out differently for me, and I must accept that.
My EGGS have arrived, and they are beautiful....I am so jealous of everone else's work.
Happy felting everyone

Hello everyone,
It sounds as though you had a really good time Sandie.
I did not know you were going to Kyneton-( that's 15 min from me) I could have shouted you a coffee at one of the shops near by- not to worry, I will make a point of catching up next time.
I was /still am having trouble with  husband and so was not feeling good about inviting people to the house -he was at home that weekend.
Sandie, it sounds like you make a full time living from your fibre art?
How luckily if you do!
Are there others on the list that can do this?
Good one you , if you can.- that is something I wanted ,but did not work.oh well.

Ladies, I am happy to stick to wool, alpaca and silk for the fibre exchange.
Does anyone know of wensleydale wool from England?
just wondering.
I am going out to look at some coloured sheep tomorrow- think they are Polwarth x English leister-spelling???
Dose anyone know any thing about this type?
I want to get a gold a off white and a grey/black sheep to go with my alpaca-I also hope to get white huacaya alpaca too.

Pat, I have 3 kg of alpaca ready to post for you , is this ok ? and how does one package fibre for the post office?
sorry it is so long lots of things come to mind.
p.s I have a number of art programs but I also have m.s. word.
Should we have a little thing at the sheep an wool show with flyers to hand out?
Who is going to this ?
I always do-
take care

Hi Sandi
Just received my copy of Wool Pages Directory for 2005 and noticed there are lots of people listed that supply or teach feltmaking. Many email address, maybe a good source for new members.

Hi Sandie,
I haven't come across this person before, perhaps he/she is very wary of sharing details, for fear of unwanted spam.
the request for more info seems logical.

Hi again,
I was thinking, for the fibre exchange, why don't we seal the separate fibres in ziplock bags, That way, If they are labelled, then whoever has a problem with a certain fibre doesn't have to open that bag :))

Personally, I understand where you are, Julie, especially with cats. The actual cat hair & dog hair, if clean is nonalergic, usually, it is the dander(dead skin flakes) that usually causes the allergies.

I must admit, if I'm not sure, a Telfast is ingested before I handle things, where I'm concerned.

I don't have an issue with different fibres being passed around.

Are we confining it to animal & vegetable, or are we thinking of manmade also?

I'm glad you all had a great Easter. Sandy, better luck next time, at least you are philosophical about it all. Next time you come down, leave the caravan behind, we'll have enough members, I'm sure, to put you up. I have a spare queen bed + extra single mattresses, so anyone over this way is welcome to stay.

Yeah, Wendy, my attachment should be through within a week. It appears that you remove your needle plate & undergear from the machine ( hook & rotary arm) & replace it with a piece of the grey foam block ( same as we use for hand needle felting. ) If it all fits my machine ok, I'm going to see if I can get a plain needle plate, (for straight stitching) & drill holes in it where the needles go through.  shouldn't be too hard.
Whatever, the attachment comes with 6 pre-shortened needles, so I'll have the correct length to cut other ones to. It will be interesting to see if the same thing could be done for the Babylock Embellisher & the Pierrot needle punch machines.

Kerry, If you still have a Roberta for sale, I'm still interested, just patiently waiting for Mr Taxman to send my hefty cheque back. He's taking a long time about it, over 2 months now.;(

1/2 of my cheque is going to finance my new machines ( including a new computer) & the other 1/2 goes into finishing the house off. At least I shall then be mostly set up for when I can give nursing away.

I'm passing on the site to all interested felters, including some in NZ.

LOL Barb Mewburn

I would like to see more people avail themselves of this particular list, or forum, so I would be in favour now of us all definitely going out and promoting it, or we could invite all of the Southern Hemisphere felters to join.  Do a little bit of promoting at the Convergence in Canberra....
Best Wishes to all.......from one who is still hungry for eggs.

Hear hear Julie, agree with you wholeheartedly in attracting more people, still would like to see what we can do here in Australia as otherwise I feel we may be duplicating a little the other feltmakers list and that was something I never wanted to happen.

I would like to design a little flyer, (unless someone else has a yen to do it!) maybe 1/4 of an A4 page that I thought we could all hand out when we are out and about in our groups.

What programs do you all have?? Microsoft word or microsoft publisher???? Then I could send it out to you all and we can get busy!!! :-)

Let me know and I will see what I can nut together.

Well it seems like a lifetime ago but I had a lovely trip to Melbourne. Our
first weekend down there I had a two day workshop to take for a group of
Steiner school Mums and teachers. I am waiting for the photos to be emailed
to me but when they do I will post one so you can all take a look. They
made some amazing creatures!!!!

We then had a couple of days to ourselves so I made hubby take me to
Meskills Wool Store at Kyneton, needed some wool for my tapestry weaving
assignment for TAFE and a bit extra to dye when I came home to make a
shawl. Then on to Bendigo where I went to the Bendigo Mills factory shop
and bought some fibre. The fibre that was in the bottom of your egg boxes
came from there!!

Then unfortunately it was time for me to teach again, I was at the
Melbourne stitches show and had two lovely groups of ladies for half day
workshops. I managed to meet Barbara but unfortunately it was a rushed
visit as we didn't manage to get together until late in the afternoon and
it was the day I was returning home so I didn't have much time. BUT I am
planning to return so hopefully then we can catch up in a more civilized
manner!!! :-)

Bought some lovely glass beads (another of my loves!), a book on fibre and
jewellery, another book on tapestry weaving, Anne Einset Vickrey's
needlefelting book, some gorgeous knitting needles carved from Rosewood
with little elephants on top from Nepal (one of my girlfriends birthday
present!!) and some cute ceramic sheep button (Another girlfriend and I
collect them!). Poor hubby, we always travel fairly close to the weight
for towing our van as we only have a small Honda four wheel drive, you can
imagine his face when I kept stuffing things in the van!!!

Then it was time to come home, it was nice to get home but unfortunately
the sale of our house and therefore the purchase of the new one have fallen
through so it is back to the drawing board. All fell apart on our journey
home but it obviously was not meant to be!!! :-) That me trying to be
philosophical instead of frustrated!!!

Came down with a bit of a thump when we arrived home a couple of big orders
to fill, a doll and bear workshop on the Sunday and another workshop to
tutor on Monday!!! No rest for the wicked. This week is much more civilised!!!

Well need to write a few more emails and back to my assignment!!!

Hope everyone is well and busy felting

Regards

Sandie :-)

Hi Guys

Think I am finally back on deck!!! Maybe????

I am all for a fibre exchange however the group decides to do it. Certainly
we need to keep in mind those members who are unable to use certain fibres.

Keep talking about it and I will try to come up with an outline next week
using the information that has been posted.

Thanks for your input on the Fibre exchange.

Maybe we could confine the exchange to wool, alpaca, mohair and silk.

What do others think?

I am still thinking about the Fibre Exchange ideas.  I generally only felt with one fibre = Merino wool.  I am biased in this department.  I also have allergies with other fibres, eg cat and dog.  I  cannot stay at my daughters house for this reason when I go to visit.  Neither can I handle being at my brother's house for longer than an hour, because she has Rag Doll cats.  I was there for a full afternoon on Sunday and today is Tuesday and I still have a headache and very puffy eyes.

Otherwise, I can use alpaca, hemp, definately not flax, and any type of wool.  I can felt with mohair, but not with angora rabbit.    Makes it hard for some of us, doesn't it?

Hi all

I think Sandie's idea about a fibre exchange is great.

We could do it two different ways:

1) People sign up to receive a fibre box. One person starts the fibre box with several different kinds of fibres in there (say 50g of 3 different types). The box gets sent to the next person on the list who takes out anything they would like and puts the equivalent amount of their own fibre in the box. This person then sends the box to the next person on the list  - and so on until the box reaches the person who originally sent it. They could start the cycle again if people were agreeable.

or

2) This would operate the same way as the Easter Egg exchange. Each person sends the co-ordinator a box with enough 50g lots of fibre for everyone on the exchange plus money to cover postage. The co-ordinator then sends the boxes of mixed fibre back to the participants.

What do people think?

Hi Wendy

The fibre came from Bendigo Woollen mills, one of my expeditions while away in Vic!!!!

Dont know what colour it was as I bought a huge bag of fibre for felting and when I was packing the eggs I thought it would be kinda nice to share with you all!!

Make sure you send a pic of the nature spirit!!! Please!!!! :-)

Sandie

Hi Sandie

A fibre exchange sounds great!

By the way, thanks for that gorgeous piece of fibre in the box - I have already made some of it into a Nature Spirit's dress!

Where did it come from? I would love to buy some.

Love

So pleased yours arrived Wendy!!!! It was a nightmare packing them as I
forgot to ask everyone to label them didn't I!!! So some of you did and
some of you didn't!!!

Thank you to all who sent their eggs in, I managed to post all the boxes
except for one yesterday!!

Barbara great to meet you in Vic but I need an address for mailing your
eggs back to you!!!  :-)

Also because I wanted to get the eggs back to everyone in time for Easter,
I didn't photograph them so I would appreciate it if those who are able to
could photograph their eggs to put up on our homepage for our group!!!

Christmas exchange,   hmmmm that sounds interesting.  What about a fibre
exchange before then?????

Take care all hopefully tomorrow I may be a bit more human and able to
catch up on email, still recovering from our time in Vic!

Happy Easter

Hi girls, Anne's sent me a return email with the details of the attachment. It appears that you could use it on any machine, as it screws straight  on to the needle bar ( like a twin needle). Her reply to my question whether it screws on to the needle bar is as follows:

----- Original Message -----

{There is a screw in on the attachment that secures it to the bar.}
I asked how to order it :
{The cost of the attachment is $40 plus shipping (I can put it in a Global priority envelope that costs about $6.) You can go to the web site and get to the order form by ordering one felting needle. Add your credit card info and then in the special instructions section write a note that you are ordering the attachment. I think this is less expensive than sending a fax. If you want to send a fax the number is 315-789-2092.

When you convert your machine, you need to remove the hardware beneath the needle and place a piece of foam there. I will send a sample of the foam we use.

Best regards,
Anne}
Sooooo here I go, I've ordered one today, so I'll know in a week or two I suppose, & can keep you all posted. I'm quite looking forward to it. As Anne said in her last email, it comes with 6 cut needles, so I'll order some more ordinary felting  needles from them, as I'm getting a bit low. At least I'll know what length to cut them to. I shall be able to compare them with the ones for the Embellisher, to see if it is possible to use them in one of those machines, as a friend here already has one.
Happy days, LOL BarbM

Hi to all you Felting Girls out there!

I still have not received my eggs....I guess that is one of the
drawbacks of being so far away over the other side of the great
country of ours. I eagerly await their arrival so that I may drool
over work done by others.

I do hope that all of you have a very safe and happy Easter, and if
you are planning on driving anywhere, please take care on the roads.
I wanted to go away, but thought about how busy the roads would be,
so when my daughter said that she was coming here, I put off the
trip. Although I worry about her being on the road also....can't
win, can I?

I have some more felting planned for the long weekend - a pair of
boots for my dad - I make him a pair each year, and he wears them so
much that he wears them out within that year. I have the third panel
of the quilt to commence, so it will be a busy time, with felting and
cleaning house and visitors.

Happy Easter everyone

Hi, everyone, Happy Easter to you all.

Wendy, sorry about the address, it was on the envelope that you
didn't need to take. It was such a comedy of errors, that day, wasn't
it? I'm glad that you got home ok. How's the house sale going?

I'm looking forward to seeing the eggs.

The next challenge will be interesting, but will probably need to be
small, as there will no doubt be a whole lot of new members.

I was wondering if the group could expand to other Southern
Hemisphere felters, as there are a few isolated felters in South
Africa as well as 1 or 2 in the Falklands. (They haven't so this is
just my thoughts).

I tried out the Babylock embellisher at the stitches & craft show. It
is fantastic to use, especially being a freehand machine
embroiderer. The possibilites are endless. I made a piece of felt 30cm
sq in a minute. It is also possible to manipulate the texture of
fabrics, just using the needles, felt lace is easy, using washaway
vilene.

However, I feel that the Embellisher is grossly overpriced.$1495.00
I haven't had a chance to try out the Pierrot needle felter yet, (the
same principle, but only 5 needles, not 7. At1/2 the price $745.00
posted, with 30day moneyback if you don't like it is a much better
proposition. The needles go in separately, too, so it is just as user-
friendly.Their needles sell for $4.80 each instead of $5.50 ea for
the embellisher.They should be interchangeable.

I also checked out Anne Vickrey's site, she emailed me, as her
husband has converted a couple of small sewing machines with an
attachment to use for needle felting (oblong, not round, but with
removable needles to. They also sell Just the attachment with 6 spare
needles for $US40.00 , + needles in different sizes. It was Anne who
said to cut ordinary felting needles to size.I'm sending for one, as
it is not a huge amount to lose if it doesn't work out.I happen to
have an old semi-industrial Bernina, that has a tension dial problem,
so I don't use it much. If I remove the bottom arm, shuttle race & hook
(only a few screws), I shall be able to use it with Anne's attachment-
I hope. I'll keep you posted.

Happy felting all of you.Keep Well. LOL Barb Mewburn

Love
Wendy

Hi all

Regards

Sandie  :-)

Received my Easter eggs this morning.

They are great - lots of different style and techniques - a showcase of our feltmaking skills!

Thanks so much Sandie for packaging them up and sending them out.

Hello fellow feltmakers
Kerry, I just love your photos. I haven't had time to look at a lot
before today, but when I saw your work, I was impressed by the lovely
shawl that you have done, as well as by the novel waist band. The
hats are also good.
I am still working on the quilt. I am just about to start on the
third panel, which will be a different shape. If I can work out how
to upload the photos, I will put some up again.
Do you know, this dumb bunny forgot to take photos of the Easter Eggs
before sending them in. What an idiot. Anyway, I will not forget to
take photos of the ones that I receive. I am looking forward to that
immensely. It will be a lovely surprise, judging by the work that I
have seen so far in the photo album from you all.
I have done a poncho in the latest style for my grand daughter, who
will turn 12 soon. She is gonna love this, as all the young girls
seem to be wearing them now.
I have unfortunately had to cancel my plans to go to the Geelong
Forum and also the Canberra Convergence. It is a blow to me, because
I enjoy them a lot. Next time maybe!
Today I have been fiddling around making flowers to put on a scar
that I made yesterday at our FeltWEST Toss and Tell Meeting, in Craft
House, Menora, a northern suburb of Perth. We have the meetings on
the third Saturday of the month, and are all very interesting.
Keep up the felting
Cheers
Julie

Apologies for being late - I have had sick children for 3 out of the last 4 weeks!
