Hello Janine

I am very glad that you like the scarf.  I have not received mine yet........but then we are waaaaaay over here in the West.  I really love these exhanges, and would like to encourage more of them at the appropriate times.  It keeps people on their toes, and does develop a certain cameraderie amongst us all.  A little bit of what we produce, can let us know a bit of how we perform with our own talents, and what our preferences are when it comes to colours, shapes, texture and of course, technique.

I do hope that everyone enjoys their new scarf, irrespective of whether or not they can wear them.  Here in Perth, we seem to create a lot of them, but the weather really does not lend itself to a lot of scarf wearing.  I do love to make them, along with Wall Hangings.

This Friday, I am going into Hospital for a very small procedure to be done........ worth an overnight stay, but 8 days off work, as the surgeon said no driving for a week or more after it.  I wonder if I shall be able to manage that, as I am always flitting here and there, not getting enough felting done.  But during the week off, I hope to have enough time to get a lot done.......

Best of the best

Cheers to all

Julie

I have successfully dyed wool, cotton and t shirt material with coffee. I Just wear something pale coloured and drink coffee and invariably end up with it on me.
I also have dyed felt, fabric, and wool intentionally with coffee. I find the best method is to put the coffee in a pot with the fabric and some brown vinegar and bring it slowly just to simmer and then put on the lid, turn off the heat and leave it to go cold. You can also wet the wool, lay it in a glass baking tray, sprinkle coffee grounds over it then carefully pour over hot tap water, cover the dish put it in a low oven around 100 degrees Celsius and cook it for about an hour then let it go cold in the oven, rinse etc. getting the coffee grounds out can be a pain though this method works with tea leaves and instant coffee

Goodies in the mail.  I forgot to label some of them with who made it on it,  oops.  Let me know when they arrive so that I can put photos up. Hopefully I remember which is whose, otherwise we can have a fun email game finding out who made yours.  I now know to ask everyone to fix a label for the next swap.

hi Dianne, I too usually lurk but this is something I do know a bit about.
I regularly use food dyes with my fibres, and a little can go a very
long way, depending on what it is you want to do. It can be imprecise,
but not if you keep regular notes. I started out with the little
bottles of Queen dyes from the supermarket then bought my dyes in half
litre bottles for about $10.00 each from an educational supplies store
several years ago, and they are certified non-toxic:
http://www.edcolours.com.au/_welcome.asp
I use about 1 cup of vinegar - a good glug - with 250 grams fibre and
sufficient water to cover the fibres in a 2 litre ice-cream container.
I have used as little as half a cup but it takes longer to take up the
colour. I microwave on medium for about 10 minutes.
I have also done it by the bucket and left overnight.
I rainbow dye, paint, and have experimented with many of the
techniques used by other methods of dyeing, and all done successfully.
I have felted using food dyes, and experienced no loss of colour. You
are welcome to contact me off list for more information.
Hth, Cheers, Caroline

- I wondered if any one knows about
> using food colouring, would I use vinegar in the mix???????
> has anyone had any experience with dyeing this way??????
> Thanks

You'll find everything you need on http://www.dyeman.com/ - I've bought from them when they were in Sydney, and recently when I attended the Quilt and Craft show in Newcastle.
You can use cold or hot water dyes - it's not the dye that causes felting, it's heat + Moisture + agitation + sudden changes in temperature. I prefer Acid hot water dyes for yarns and felt because they are easy to use, and only need acetic acid (vinegar is around 6%) to help the dye take. There's sure to be some good little cheap books on eBay about dying. I'll have a look later tonight and post some links.
