Hi Ardione, I haven't sent my bag and unfortunately won't be able to in a reasonable time for everyone else. Many apologies to everyone for holding things up. Life has gotten in the way of the things I really want to do.

Hi, I have just seen your note as I have been away up north for a
month. I have made lots of fulled/felted knitted hats. I felt in a
top loading machine but my daughter in law Lydia has a front loader so
she hand felts in the bath! With her in it! It's just a matter of
providing the water and agitation needed for the process. We have
considered using one of the camping washing "machines" that are
actually a tumbler but I am not sure if Lydia has tried hers yet. I
have also tried working my hats by starting the process in the washing
machine, then continuing to shrink them by rolling and rubbing in the
usual felting method. I have decided that whatever works for me is
the way to go as it's the end result that matters. I block mine on
the Hatshapers blocks, so I can rub them on the block to keep the
shrinking going. Hope this helps.
Sorry, I meant to email and say that bags had arrived from Meg and Pat. Thanks guys and I can't wait to see the rest.
I have been working on vessels the last few weeks Finished one which I beaded around the rim and am very pleased with it. I am not sure what I am going to do with this collection but I am hoping an opportunity presents itself.
Hi Nancy Welcome to Aussie felters. I am more a crocheterer than a knitter. Fulling actually is the correct term but the wool is being felted so it's potatoes/potartoes really. I have crocheted and the fulled/felted in the washing machine twice. I have a top loader and both times it took ages probably a good half an hour. I also tried doing a small sample piece by rolling it in a sushi mat and dunking between hot and cold water and that only took about ten minutes but it was a small piece and I don't know how a bag or something like that would go with hand felting. I went to an Alice Gove workshop and she had put an old wool jumper through her needle felter and it had felted beautifully. with the crocheted pieces they shrank 30 % in width but only 10% in length so the first piece ended up really
long I take a photo some time. This hasn't been a problem as it is a really useful bag instead of a small handbag which was the intention. I allowed for this in the second piece and it is how I wanted. Which was a big bag for library books or lots of stuff with long handles I can put around my neck for carrying. I am going to tart it up a bit and then I'll show it on here. Hope this helps you.

I have her Eco Colour book Pat. It's wonderful, but as it's a recent purchase, I haven't had a lot of time to read it in detail. Your proposed scarf sounds wonderul! I love India's work and the colours she creates.
Did anyone see the segment on India Flint on Sunday Arts on the ABC yesterday. It showed her dying with leaves and rusty metal on to cotton cloth. I'm thinking I would like to make a white scarf using fine merino then dye it using her method. Haven't ventured into natural dying yet. Have a yard full of different gums, might be a good time to start. Has anyone tried natural dying felt items?
Very cold here this morning just 2 Celsius and I have to go out to the shed to make batts. Won't warm up much today so I'd better get at it.

Welcome, Nancy. Hope you enjoy this discussion list. Nice lot of people on it. I am sorry, but I have never done any felting in the washing machine, and have only a top loading one at that. I have only done one hat by knitting it first, then fulling it.....don't like doing it, as it takes too long to do anything that way, and with working full time, and rostered work at that, I find my time is precious.
Cheers and I hope your feltmaking journey is an enjoyable one. I have been felting now since 1992 and I still find it addictive.
I too, put the finishing touches on my bag today, and so tomorrow it will be in the post. I have just taken a photo of it, so that I will be able to remember what it looks like.
I have already been to work today, and started at 6am, finished at 11.30am. Oh, it's a tough world.......

Hi everyone,
Finished my bag last night. I am very happy with it and am really looking forward to seeing the others. The great thing about coordinating the swap is you get to see them all in person.
Off to work now. Montville can be really scary on a Sunday, so wish me luck.

I have a front loader as well and use the hand wash cycle when felting. It's gentle enough not to over do it, can always put it through again if it is not felted enough.
I had better introduce myself, I am Nancy from the Central coast,
and I am a new felter. Basically I am a machine knitter and I knit the
fabric and then felt it, maybe adding needle felting afterwards.
My problem at this stage of my felting journey, is that I have a front
loadig washing machine, so cannot control the length of wash, only the
program. Any suggestions?

I have been working on my bag for the swap. I am very happy with it and have really enjoyed doing it. I am finding that I enjoy ,and am more creative when I am making something for someone or for a special occasion such as the swap. It seems to inspire me more and I receive great satisfaction. I hope everyone else it having fun with it.
Glad to hear from you. You are doing a
great job with organising another swap. Not for me this time. I am having
trouble finding time keeping up with the market stall. Make sure you post
photos though as I would love to see what others are up to.
Don't know how those pebbles were made but I think if you soft felted a fat sausage shape then cut into pieces and finished felting in the palm of your had it should work. Bag is finished and ready to mail, could you give me details for sending.
Bought some little white one cup teapots at car boot sale some time ago. Today I finely felted over them. Encased them in felt, bottom is rust red and made a black witches style hat to go on top. Photos soon I hope, when it is dry.
Haven't made bags for ages, enjoyed doing the one for the swap so much I have another laid out ready to felt tomorrow.

Ardione, did you know your messages keep coming to me first as spam? I have tried from my end to reset your messages, but can’t find anything wrong. Could you have a look at your settings? This is why your messages are sometimes delayed.
I wanted to pick some brains. I saw some gorgeous "pebbles" at "spiralworksfelt" on page four and was wondering how I would get those great shapes. Anyone know how ??
How is the bag making going?? Mine is in the prefelt and design process. The kids go back to school next Tuesday and as I have dropped my work down to 2 days a week I will be able to get started.
thanks everyone for your kind words, while looking in my diary to put
in the delivery date I realise that I don't really have enough time
to do a piece justice as I only really have a couple of weeks as I go
down to Melb to work the show around the 22nd and have 2 samples to
make to take with me plus a couple of qulits to whip up if I can
squeeze them in, so I need to step away and say OK next time.
cheers --- Janine
