Hello felters, I have been offline for 3weeks so have a few emails to
catch up on.
My felting classes at the CMCA rally went well but there was not a lot
of interest. We will have to work on it!
I went to Craft Fair yesterday and pleased to see there is more
interest in Felting.
Krishna hope your arm is improving. It is sad to hear the young ones
are falling apart!
Julie I can not find the Photo that you had showing how you set up the
sander. Is it available?
Pat sorry to hear your news my thoughts are with you.
Happy felting,PJpatch

I've got both the jewellery & the How we Felt book - they're both really informative and inspiring. If you had to buy only one, though I would make it the How we Felt. There are pieces from several artists and therefore show a wide range of styles and items. It's quite contemporary and not at all 'cute-sy' so it appeals to my asthetic.

I hear you regarding the A$! I've been lucky in buying a large percentage of my desired books before it started falling - but there's still several (not just felting) books that I'll now put on the backburner :)

Caz :)

Thanks I will try it, I was thinking of buying that book but owing to
the Aussie dollar at the moment I will have to put it on my wish list
instead. How would you rate the book? Does it mention a few
techniques for flower making?

Thanks Jan! That was quick *grin* I presume you are looking at these instructions http://www.fibrespacecrafts.com/howto.html

I'd imagine that the hanky would make it a little easier , but I've made a similar flower from a Carol Cypher ( http://www.carolcypher.com/ ) book from tops only without a hanky and it turned out fine. You could try that.

To the second part of your question (oops! - sorry)  I bought my hankies from www.beautifulsilks.com.au

I bought them from the store in Melbourne, but you can buy online as well

I can't help you with a substitute of the top of my head, but I'm sure more experienced felters here can help!

Caz :)

I have felted my first slipper but have run out of time to felt the
other one today. Does it matter if I have a break inbetween felting the
first one and the second. Is there anyway I should treat the felted
one i.e. wrap up damp so that is doesn't dry out? Or doesn't it matter

Thanks

I don't usually post as I am such a beginner at felting, and as my
first craft is machine knitting most of my felting is done in the
washing machine on previously knitted fabric, but on the rare occasions
that I have felted from fleece then I use the sander.I put bubble wrap
under the fleece and curtain netting above. should work for nuno
felting too. Nancy

Hey Meg

Glad to hear that you are breaking the norm and using a Sander.  I don't use the net, but the plastic goes directly onto the wool.  Use the Sander onto the plastic.  Sometimes I even get rid of the plastic and use the Sander directly onto the wool.  But so long as you have a circuit breaker turned on at the power point and cut out a plastic bottle to prevent water from coming up into the electrical part of the Sander, you will be fine.  Change hands often, so that the vibrations of the Sander do not bother one or the other hand.

I attach pics of the Sander with the plastic bottle guard that I made for it, which I once saw Lorraine McArthur use.

Hi all

Welcome to Dale and new member. Just pop in when you are ready, Dale

The elbow is not travelling very well at the moment, and I have been using the embellisher, which is ok for some things, but I much prefer traditional felting.

Nice to see some  members back on line.

Pat take good care of yourself and have plenty of rest, you are in my thoughts.

Now I am off to do some nuno felting, blow the crappy elbow,

Have a great day.

Dear Pat,
What can I say? you must have been floored by the news. You know that
you have our prayers, support & understanding at this very trying time.

It's good to keep occupied. I'm sure that the staff in Sydney will be as
wonderful as they are here in Melbourne. Try to get some fresh air and
exercise every day, even when you don't feel like it. 15 mins is enough.

Don't beat yourself up if you are too tired, at times to do any felting.
I find audible books are great when I'm down. ( I use audible.com &
download them).

I bet you will be a star with everyone down there & are sure to get some
more custom.

I wish you well.

Hello all

I have just started reading Aussie Feltmakers emails again after almost a year. In that time I have renovated 2 houses, moved house and had some major family crises.

All my felting stuff was in storage for nearly a year - but I have just started felting again in the past few weeks. My new house has a much larger space in which to store supplies and make felt, so I am going to start up my home business again - teaching feltmaking and selling felting supplies. if any of you live in or are passing through Sydney, please feel free to drop in for a cup of tea and a chat.

Pat, I was so sorry to hear of your illness. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Perhaps I could come and visit you while you are in Sydney. Whereabouts will you be staying?

Hello everyone.
I just got home yesterday after my surgery in Sydney. The results were not what we hoped for so I will have to return mid Nov for 5 weeks of radiation. We will have to put Highland Felting on hold from mid Nov. Until after Christmas. I will take a lot of fibre with me and see if I can make a few hats as treatment will take a small part of each day and I will have a lot of time on my hands. It is too far to go home so I will have to stay in Sydney for the 5 weeks.

hi everyone
have been to busy of late to do any fibre work but I'm trying to get
into the zone as I head to Brisbane on the weekend to work the Quilt
Show there next week, then Adelaide after that.
Some of you may know that I work for Cecile Whatman on the Unique
Stitching stand at all of the shows selling/demonstrating/teaching
all things fibre and I have a question for you all,
at the shows we always have many people ask where they can go to
learn these things so what I'm trying to find is a shop in each of
the cities that I can approach to organise some teaching before or
after a show so I can direct people there to my classes.
So I thought if I could get some suggestions from you lot I could
visit them on these trips and set things up for next year.
also if anyone wants to catch up for a cuppa I will be in Caloundra
from Sat then down to Bris on Tue ready for the show, couple of weeks
time I'll be in Adelaide then after continue onto Perth to catch up
with family, I'll be able to access my mail while away but my mob is
04004 19453

time to head out the door for TAFE and get dirty in the sculpture studio
cheers

Hello to everyone,
Have just got back from Fibres West in Bunbury. Loved every minute of it.I did
the workshop
with Ken Smith "Embroidery in the Round". Did not finish my "hat" but lots of
samples with
the machine embroidery. Raring to go. of course I bought a lot of things from
the
traders, well I did save up for all this!!! Lovely threads and some silk. Hope to
get into dyeing
silk. Our local Garden show is this week-end I should be making felt for that
but we will see.
Bought a scarf dyed the India Flint method, pure merino wool in my favourite
Autumn

Welcome to any new additions to the AussieFeltmakers List in the time that I have been absent, or quiet.
I have been to New Zealand with my sister from Brisbane, for the past 10 days, having returned yesterday afternoon.  The trip was great, but due to the nature of our visit, I did not get one chance to be able to visit anywhere that produced any felt.  I did however, buy one sample of New Zealand felt, in a handbag from a gallery and shop in Whangarei.  The colours were irresistable and it has Possum Fur around the top.  Possum is a pest in New Zealand, seeing as how it is an introduced animal that is decimating all the native birds and small animals there, so they are treated as vermin there.  To add to the felt, it makes the hanbag look and feel very special indeed.

The trip saw us land in Auckland, where we picked up a Hire Car, spent 2 nights there, then drove up the highway 1 to Whangarei, spending another 2 nights there whilst driving out to lots of places including up to the Bay of Isles, going accross the ferry at Russell and driving into Paihai, then across the island to Dargesville and Baylys beach, then to the large Kauri Museum in Matakohe, down to Brynderwyn, Puhoi and back down to Auckland, where we offloaded the hire car and caught a Coach tour  that went through Waitomo Glow Worm Caves, and on to the Mud pond and Guysers at Rotorua, where we stayed 2 nights, visiting all the touristy spots attending a Hungi and Maori dancing display.  We then coached it down to Wellington, where we spent another 2 nights and enjoying the sights of Wellington.  Back again to Auckland by Coach and another night there before we were winging our way back to Oz.  I had a 3 hour wait in Melbourne for a connecting flight, mainly standing in the Customs line up.

I loathe the fact that we are so far away over here, but truth be known, I would not live anywhere else, as we are in God's own country.  I know that I am biased, but I was born and raised in WA, and after livi ng in Qld, NSW, SA, NT, I can unequivically say that this is the best place for me.
I will just have to put up with travelling if I want to visit anywhere else.

Now it is time for me to get back into some serious feltmaking.  I will be willing to join in with a Christmas exchange if we are going to have one.

How was the Forum that you went to Meg?

Cheers to all
Julie

Hi Fern
that is about what I paid for it maybe a bit less. I got it from
http://www.candoboo ks.com.au

I love the book. If you haven't got a lot of doll patterns or even if you do it is a good book.

Hi Peta

I saw this book recently and was rather taken with it, but was loath to pay the $45 price. Can I ask where you got yours from and what you paid for it?

thanks
Fern

Just bought the book Cloth Dolls for Textile Artists by Ray Slater. REally good book.
