Hello fellow felt adicts!!! I'm Tanya and I live in Perth. Have been
felting for about 3 years now, on the committee for Feltwest here in WA
and have started my own business Tum Tum Tree Designs.

My thing in felt is 3D sculptures and working with resists. I don't
really do wearables, as I am a polar bear and being so hot blooded, I
don't need felt to keep me warm....so if I don't wear, I don't make it.

Last year I was lucky enough to work with both Judit Pocs and Alexander
Pilin, which was sensational. Now, I can say I make good felt!!!! I
have been running some workshops here in Perth, as well as raising two
little men, make that three (husband included).

Have never been a part of a group like this, so please help me out.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Regards Tanya

Hi Judi
I live nearby in Nerang. You can visit my website at
www.lavendillyhouse.com

or my blog at

www.lavendillyhouse.blogspot.com

I run some workshops here on the coast, including nuno felting. You can use all sorts of fabrics for nuno but it is a matter of experimentation to see what works best. For myself I prefer silk - tissue silk or silk georgette. Nothing feels quite as nice to wear! Musline felts up quite well too and is good for making fabrics for bags and things that will be used often.

I can't remember when my next workshops are but they are listed on my website. I have a needlefelting workshop this sunday. I am looking forward to that one.
cheers,
Jennifer

Subject: [AussieFeltmakers] Introducing myself to your felting group

Hi everyone

I have joined your group after having my first thrilling experience attempting to make  a wrap using Nuno method.

Surfing the web .. typing in nuno .. I found Fabrique... and the group was mentioned.

My humble adobe is in Surfers Paradise.. Gold Coast .. Australia.

Do any of you live close by?

I want to learn all I can about nuno... and goodness knows where that will lead me to.

First question are there any fabrics I can't use for nuno making? AND which fabrics are really good to use.. I may already have some I can use in my stash... maybe not and have to get over to Spotlight.

Should the fabrics be washed before use?

Can they be second hand items of clothing or tablecloths or ???

Are there any workshops nearby?

Stockists?

Thanks in advance for any information.

hello all,
The devastation is incredible. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all those
families who have
suffered the loss of there homes and loved ones. My husband was a fire control

What else can I say. If the group decides to put a package together include me.

We are still in the line of fire so to speak Barb. Not like up at Kinglake, but we have a fire bug running around here in the hills. On Sunday we had someone light a fire along the railway line in Upper FTG. It burnt up the line and out some all the way to Belgrave. Burwood highway was blocked off most of the day because of it.

They got it under control, but it was potentially hazardous. I just dont get where these idiots get off. Our house was burnt out in the fires here in ash wednesday. So every summer we pack up our precious things and shunt them down to a storage unit. Its one less thing we need to worry about should the worst happen because we figure if the fires came this way again, the chances are this house would go again.

We werent here then and probably if we had known the fire history of the house we wouldnt have bought it, but here we are and till we go, then here we are.

hugs

Hi Fern, I guess it makes a change to Not be in the line of fire in the
Dandenongs? Having lived in FTG for many years when I was much younger,
I well remember the fear we had every year of bush fires, especially as
communication wasn't as good then.

It makes us all realise how fortunate we are in this trying time.

Keep your eyes sharp. Unfortunately there are still fire terrorists
around. It really does emphasize the need to look after each other
doesn't it?

The fires are about 30 km from us in bendigo and the reedsdale ones are about 15km from us.
Thank you  for asking about us.
I never thought to check in and say we were ok....sorry

We have had smoke and a funny dark red colour in the sky on Saturday but that's about it.
My heart is crying for all the dead people and animals.

I do understand and know the distress that a fire brings- I was 15 years old in the ash Wednesday fires at cockatoo.

Hi Barb

I freely admit that I'm a wuss.

Please don’t ever think that! As you already know fires are not to be messed with,

they have a life of their own and are unpredictable.

I don’t think people realise the resulting trauma from a bushfire,

the immediate is easy to see but the internal scars take a long time to fade, if ever.

And that is in just an average bushfire, this was no average bushfire. L

I don’t have a lot financially to give but certainly if someone needs a break away from

Vic there is a bed at our place, and if you need anything to put together a felting care package

there is lots of fibre stashed in my home!

A big {{{{{{{{cyber hug}}}}}}}} to you Barb and our other Vic members, stay safe!

Luv

Sandie

Hi Ladies, thank you again for your kind wishes and prayers. I'm fine &
very safe at this stage & wouldn't normally be in the line of fire, as
we're in open farming area here. Caz & Natalie live around Creswick, I
think, which is near Ballarat. They Should be safe, but one never knows.
It was soo frightening. There are several members of the Victorian
Feltmakers who are in the firing line, around the NE of Victoria and
Bendigo, in and around the devastating fires of Kinglake & St Andrews,
in the Bunyip State forest area & the Latrobe Valley, which has been
going for 12 days now. They need our Prayers too. Purple lives in the
Dandenongs, which has been badly affected in parts. We are all shell
shocked.

I have been rather complacent, before, but not now. I never thought that
we would be affected greatly, being so open. Grass fires are our danger
here. We keep the grass short & the paddock grazed, to minimize it.
Having seen massive eucalyptus fire balls travel kms & driven through
fires in forested areas in the '83 fires, I could never live in native
forest area.I used to do burns nursing when I was younger. It's
challenging. So painful. I had a number of burns incidents as a child,
which have left mental, if not physical scars. I freely admit that I'm a
wuss.

That said, plant Blackwoods, Cassuarinas, other wattles. These will shed
up to 400 L water in a fire for protection! Eucalypts are beautiful to
look at & smell, but not safe to have near the house.

I always remember reading of a man in the '67 fires in Tasmania who had
planted oaks & other deciduous trees around the perimeter of his
property. His place was safe, where all his neighbours lost theirs as
they had Eucalypts all around.

We must think of the animals caught up in the fires, so many people have
lost not only their homes, but their lively hood. Those who haven't lost
all their stock have lost the feed, including hay. Perhaps those of us
who have extra can help others out.

The effects of the fire will be ongoing, lasting years. It's not only
immediate help that people will need, but later, when trying to
re-establish themselves, they will need support, both mental, physical &
financially. Little things will be important. Maybe we could set up a
fund to give them a few days break away in the future, or support them
in going to a felting function?

Warm regards,
Barb Mewburn, Warragul, Vic

Thanks Jennifer,Sandie & Krishna for your sentiments,

We personally don't need anything & aren't in danger at the present
time, we all feel so helpless, but what people can do is donate via the
Red Cross to Bush Fire relief fund in National Banks or to Salvation
Army Bush fire appeal, as money is the paramount need. Locally we're
trying to donate things like new undies ( all sizes), socks, toiletries,
etc. Clothing has been donated, as you can imagine, House hold goods
aren't necessary, as so many people don't have a house to put it in.
the death toll is now 130 & rising each time they find another isolated
house or car. More than 700 homes destroyed. Most of these fires have
been deliberately lit, that's what so hard to take.

The lesson to learn from this is to take heed of the weather forecast,
action your fireplan & leave _early_, even if you think it's not
necessary (not when the flames are appearing) If there's smoke & you are
in a forested area, Get Out. Most of these homes are indefensible. We
have all been too complacent, even if we know what to do, we all think
we'll be ok. Please, don't forget to wear appropriate long woollen
clothing -even if it's hot - in a fire situation. Radiant heat is what
kills.

Regards to you all,

Barb Mewburn, Warragul ( West Gippsland, Victoria)

I second the sentiments expressed by Sandie and Jennifer.

Other groups I belong to have members in the fire areas, at the moment the most important things seems to be money. So we intend to go there to start with and then wait and see what people need in the future.

I have looked through the member’s names in our group, but most members don’t have the area they live in listed.

Hopefully the fires are out soon.

Take care all of you.,

Hi Barb

Extremely pleased to hear you are safe, I hope and pray that your family and friends are safe too.

It’s hard to fathom this kind of devastation, especially when it appears to have been deliberately started.

Stay safe, and please don’t hesitate to ask if there is some way in which we as a group can help.

Hi Everyone,
We're shell shocked here in Victoria, it is so unbelievably devastating.
126 dead so far. I've been around fires before, but this is the worst
ever. Fortunately, where I live, it's quite open ground. Despite this, I
evacuated for a number of hours on Saturday, due to ember strike from
fires 1km away. The wind changed & we were safe so I was able to return,
just keeping a lookout & patrolling all night for embers, to relieve my
husband who had stayed.

So many of my friends are in danger areas, it's impossible to trace them
at this stage. My sister lives in East Warburton, which is heavily treed
with native forest, fortunately she is near the Yarra River, so can hop
in there if things get too bad.

We send our prayers and thoughts to all who are affected by the fires &
also the floods in Queensland, either directly or indirectly.

To all of you felters out there who aren't well I also send my thoughts
& prayers.

Not much felting going on here at present, but I'll have to get some
done soon, as it'll be winter before we know about it.

best wishes,
Barb Mewburn, Warragul, Vic.

Hi Robyn,
Nerang is a suburb on the Gold Coast in Queensland.
I began felting here with the Silkwood Steiner School community, as I taught at that school for many years.
I am resuming an interest in needle felting - but mainly to complete projects that have been sitting around for a while: a headless mermaid, a bodiless old crone, a pregnant body with no limbs or head! Can't have all these body parts lying around! I will put photos on my blog when they are completed.

I hope one day to complete all the projects in my house - but in the process I keep starting new ones!

Hi friends,
I have started a blog to share with  the thoughts, stories and inspirations behind some of my felted artworks.
This is information I cannot adequately share on my website, and may be interesting to those who enjoy making felt.
If you are interested, please have a look!

www.lavendillyhouse .blogspot. com/

I am also looking for expressions of interest to do a meditation mat workshop in April.
If this is something you would like to create for yourself - or perhaps make it in to a large play mat for your children - please let me know.
More than likely it will be held on a Saturday in Nerang.

Hi Krishna,
Nice to meet you. I am not quite sure how to find my way into the group. Who else is felting in Coffee Camp, I wonder? What sort of things do you do?

Thank you Krishna! My felting has taken me on a completey different journey this last 12 months. I have been working through women's spiritual studies and my recent work reflects how much this means to me. I am working on medusa as a long-term project - a flet felted base with a needle felted face rising from it (like a mask), surrounded by lots of writhing snakes......I have the face done but it is taking  a while to complete due to life and other things things that get in the way of inspired work!!!

Well, I must say I have just been reading Jennifer’s blog ,www.lavendillyhouse .blogspot. com/. It is absolutely beautiful and inspiring. I suggest everyone have a look, and make sure you look at the archives as well. It is a moving and a very spiritual work.

I have been doing a bit of needlefelting, and have made a little west highland terrier for a dear aunt as she has had to part with her little friend. I have added a photo on my blog.

The idea of sending a felted gift to feltettes in distress has been put on the back burner due to lack of interest. Maybe we can discuss it again when we have more members.

All the best, and keep on felting.

Hi Feltettes,

Yes, I think I'll be attending the NZ convergence. There are a few of us
from Victoria going. If you want to go, it would be best to pay your deposit
by Feb 20. Then you can also be sure to be included in their side trip to
the Wearable Art Awards in Wellington - something I've always wanted to see
first hand!

Cheers,

Stacey
