Hi Tanya
Its great news that the convergence will be held in Perth.  The last one that WA hosted was in 1993 and it was in Bunbury.  I look forward to being there, and I can assure myself if not anyone else that I will be taking time off work for it.  My last convergence that I attended was in 2001 when it was held in Caloundra, Qld in 2001.  Too long ago.

cheers
Julie

Hi Peta,

Nice to hear from you. I am so jealous, would love to do something like that. Maybe in the future. Actually, I am hoping to attend  the felt convergence when it is next in Australia.

Hi everyone.
Well, I have been flat out both with my business and making hats.
I am trying to get 10 hats ready for an Art Deco show at the end of May and hope to have 10 for Alice Springs Beanies festival . So far 3 finished for show and two well underway. Three done for The Alice. Pictures soon.
I have purchased 10 foam wig stands and and gilding them with gold leaf to display the hats.
I see some one was asking about mohair. I have several kilos of raw mohair I am willing to sell by the kilo. It is pretty dirty but I will include washing instructions. Email me privately and we can discuss price.

Hiya

The treasurer for Feltwest is Sue Eslick and her details are hobbes2@... or 9444 1067.  You can also download a membership form from our website or just have a wander around the website....which is.....  www.feltwest.org.au. Membership is only $25 per year and is well worth it just for the newsletters.....which I must say are full colour and jam packed full of wonderful work and info.  If you need any more info....just let me know.

Hi Janine

You can live anywhere to belong to FeltWEST.  Pay your membetrship, and you receive a newsletter and become a member for one year.  The only thing about living interstate is that you would not be able to attend the Toss and Tell meetings, which are held on the Third Saturday of each month.  We also have members in other states already, who recieve the newletter .

I am not at home sending this at present, so I cannot give you the email address of the Treasurer or other members of the committee.  When I get to it, I can do that.  Tanya Peters, our new AussieFeltmakers member is on the committee... ...Tanya can you step in here?

How have things been with you since you were here last.  Mum is still going with her quiltmaking.  She has been making and donating some along with other members of her little group in Rockingham, for the victims of the Vic Bushfires, so it has kept her busy.

Me....well, I think I work too hard at my paying job, and I wish I did not have to.

Cheers

A State on Fire

Each summer February looms before Victorians as 'bushfire season'. But of
course life goes on as usual, it has to. This year however, life has not
gone on as normal. A firestorm of more than 30 fires across Victoria has
marked Feb 2009 as a black period of Australia's history, racing over
hilltops and houses in seconds and devastating whole towns in minutes.

10 days on and i feel incredibly fortunate to be continually receiving good
news of the survival of close friends and relatives in affected areas. But
the smoke that still hangs over us like a fog ever-reminds me of those who
are not able to say this today, of the parents who have lost sons and
daughters, the children who have lost their dads, those who have lost
partners and life-long friends, animals. livelihood, homes and businesses
as fires ripped indiscriminately across our lands.

The issues that are unfolding from this disaster are so vast and complex. I
realise it can be difficult to understand when one may be so far removed
from it, and to remember these things when they start to disappear from the
headlines (especially given that so many areas around the world are
inflicted by natural disasters daily). But it will take months, even years
to rebuild these shattered lives and communities, and for Victoria to
overcome this incredible attack on our increasingly threatened &
ever-precious water supply.

Please do not forget.

Thanks, Jude - that was beautiful! We have many members of our forum who's
lives have been somehow affected by this disaster. I asked Jude to write a
plea for help. And our dear forum member, Kaza, has been working hard in
conjunction with the Red Cross to organize an art auction during the height
of tourist season in her community in Victoria.

Our collective compassion and creative energy of our talented members is a
very powerful thing and I'm asking all forum members to donate at least one
felted art item to help make a difference with the recovery; to help
rebuild shattered lives.

Please Visit Kaza's Blog for the details.

Hi all,

I had an email from a new member today asking where to source merino from and how to dye wool. I have replied, but I am asking all you feltettes out there for your favourite source of wool and any favourite dyeing tips. This I am sure will be a great help to the newbies.

I will collect the replies and make a folder for the webplace.

Thanks

Hi All,
so nice to get a bit of talk going again. Christmas and then the fires floods etc have really cut back on the talk time haven't they.
I'll throw in my welcome to the new members, we are usually a bit more talkative. Is anyone going to Fiber Forum at Ballarat. I am doing Catherine O'Leary's Felting class there and I am really looking forward to that

You must be one experienced felter if you were one of the originals.  Hope you enjoyed Annies workshop, she is a good friend of mine and I have actually just joined Annie and Elizabeth Morely, as part of 'Catalyst'.  Annie's sister, who lives in London is the secretary of the International Feltmakers Association.

You may have met me or seen me around.  I am in my late 30's and rather loud...a bit hard to miss.  If you come to another toss-n-tell, I am usually set up close to the seated area....we are all trying to wear name tags this year, so everyone knows who is who.  We had a huge turn out last weekend, I think it was over 40 people and we had 5 newbies doing a beginners course at the same time.  Now that we are running beginner workshops every meeting, it has made it easier (and quicker) for people to learn and join in.  I'm running the April workshop for Feltwest, so watch the newsletter and you will see it advertised.

What is your favourite thing in felting???  I just can't get enough 3D!!!!  Looking forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes...Tanya

Hi Judi

Good to see another new member. We have all been a little quiet lately (busy, busy busy!!) but ask away as I am sure someone will have the answer!

I work predominantly now in needlefelting mainly due to some health issues with my arms (cant do all the rolling L)

But we do have lots of members who make nuno!!

One of the biggest things I have learnt over the years is test stuff!!! I never used to do test samples, preferring to let my work become whatever it was meant to be. Now many years later I find it’s the only way to go if I want something to follow a particular path!

Good luck with the nuno!

Cheers

Hello fellow felt adicts!!! I'm Tanya and I live in Perth. Have been
felting for about 3 years now, on the committee for Feltwest here in WA
and have started my own business Tum Tum Tree Designs.

My thing in felt is 3D sculptures and working with resists. I don't
really do wearables, as I am a polar bear and being so hot blooded, I
don't need felt to keep me warm....so if I don't wear, I don't make it.

Last year I was lucky enough to work with both Judit Pocs and Alexander
Pilin, which was sensational. Now, I can say I make good felt!!!! I
have been running some workshops here in Perth, as well as raising two
little men, make that three (husband included).

Have never been a part of a group like this, so please help me out.
Looking forward to meeting everyone.

Regards Tanya

Hi Judi
I live nearby in Nerang. You can visit my website at
www.lavendillyhouse.com

or my blog at

www.lavendillyhouse.blogspot.com

I run some workshops here on the coast, including nuno felting. You can use all sorts of fabrics for nuno but it is a matter of experimentation to see what works best. For myself I prefer silk - tissue silk or silk georgette. Nothing feels quite as nice to wear! Musline felts up quite well too and is good for making fabrics for bags and things that will be used often.

I can't remember when my next workshops are but they are listed on my website. I have a needlefelting workshop this sunday. I am looking forward to that one.
cheers,
Jennifer

Subject: [AussieFeltmakers] Introducing myself to your felting group

Hi everyone

I have joined your group after having my first thrilling experience attempting to make  a wrap using Nuno method.

Surfing the web .. typing in nuno .. I found Fabrique... and the group was mentioned.

My humble adobe is in Surfers Paradise.. Gold Coast .. Australia.

Do any of you live close by?

I want to learn all I can about nuno... and goodness knows where that will lead me to.

First question are there any fabrics I can't use for nuno making? AND which fabrics are really good to use.. I may already have some I can use in my stash... maybe not and have to get over to Spotlight.

Should the fabrics be washed before use?

Can they be second hand items of clothing or tablecloths or ???

Are there any workshops nearby?

Stockists?

Thanks in advance for any information.

hello all,
The devastation is incredible. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all those
families who have
suffered the loss of there homes and loved ones. My husband was a fire control
forester
with the Forest Dept W.A. and I know what he thought of arsonists.
What else can I say. If the group decides to put a package together include me.
Have made a
donation. Meg

We are still in the line of fire so to speak Barb. Not like up at Kinglake, but we have a fire bug running around here in the hills. On Sunday we had someone light a fire along the railway line in Upper FTG. It burnt up the line and out some all the way to Belgrave. Burwood highway was blocked off most of the day because of it.

They got it under control, but it was potentially hazardous. I just dont get where these idiots get off. Our house was burnt out in the fires here in ash wednesday. So every summer we pack up our precious things and shunt them down to a storage unit. Its one less thing we need to worry about should the worst happen because we figure if the fires came this way again, the chances are this house would go again.

We werent here then and probably if we had known the fire history of the house we wouldnt have bought it, but here we are and till we go, then here we are.

hugs
Fern

Hi Fern, I guess it makes a change to Not be in the line of fire in the
Dandenongs? Having lived in FTG for many years when I was much younger,
I well remember the fear we had every year of bush fires, especially as
communication wasn't as good then.

It makes us all realise how fortunate we are in this trying time.

Keep your eyes sharp. Unfortunately there are still fire terrorists
around. It really does emphasize the need to look after each other
doesn't it?

Warm regards, Barb Mewburn
