I, too, have sold an old carder that I used to have, so prefer if it was already carded. I like to be able to just grab the wool and go straight into the felting.

HI Natalie
I would prefer carded fibre.
Thanks
Wendy

hello everyone,
I was wondering as I am going to send my fibre bags off tomorrow.
instead of raw off the back fibre, would everyone like better a 50g carded batt of comb mixed fibre?
I there is normally 6 layers to a 50 gram batt of about 15 inch wide from my hand carder.
I will write what each layer is and go from white to a natural colour so you can see each layer easily.
also I have been asked to felt some batts up for a bear maker.
what do I charge??
it cost me $16.00 for a 200 g batt off Margaret peel-alpaca.
thanks everyone
Natalie.

I used to participate years ago when I belonged to the Busselton Spinners, but since I left there, I have not been able to get info on it, and therefore have not joined in. Can you send me a form if you have one spare, or give me an address that I can contact for the Sunraysia group? Ta for that.
Hi Wendy
I am pleased that you got my box of goodies.....As you can see, I could not decide which fibre to take out, so I left them all in. LOL
As you can all probably have guessed, I have been a little unsettled here of late, what with the rotten job etc, so....I have put my house on the market, hoping that it probably will not sell until about just after the FeltWest Retreat, which is in June, but if it does, I will probably rent a unit nearer to work until I can get through the Retreat. Then I will plan on taking a trip overseas for a while (maybe go to USA, catch up on a few felters there, plus a couple of cousins), go to Japan for a while to stay with some friends there, then go back to Austria for a bit and I hope to be able to go to India to have a look at some of the textile arts there.
In the meantime, I have a quilt to finish, and I need to get that done by the end of the month, in time for the Craft Fair at the Convention Centre in Perth. FeltWest are having a display and we are also able to sell off a lot of our felt, so I will put in a few pieces of mine in the hope that some sell. We had a Trash and Treasure day last week, to try to sell off some of our bits and pieces that we no longer need, and I made $$$ by selling off my felt offcuts, some books that I no longer wanted, magazines also, and ribbons, scraps of fabrics and excess old towels.
Don't worry about the postage. I will try to post your fibre in a smaller box to keep the parcel under 500g.
I found about the Scarf Lane Market just after applications closed. It sounds very interesting and is a great way to get your work exposed to a large group of people.
Definitely make something you would like to wear. If you like it, the chances are that someone else will as well.
Felted scarves are very "in" at the moment - I have seen quite a few in exclusive Sydney boutiques recently. They were selling for $120 to $400 and the shop usually takes 40-50% of the selling price.
Please show us a photo of your finished scarf.

Hi Wendy and all,
I'm glad the box arrived! I am certain that the $5 I included will not cover return postage, so I will have to work out how to get you the rest.
I am working on a scarf for the Scarf Lane Market run by Craft Victoria. This is my first time - has anyone else been involved in this event? As a new feltmaker, I have no idea what sells so I'm just trying to do something that I would like to wear. They take 40% commission, so pricing is another issue! Anyway, it is good just to be felting again.

Hi Natalie,
the carded batt sounds a great idea.
why I said that the very fine can be a pain to lay out is because it Is
so fine, & floaty, I remember taking 8 hours on a hot ,sticky day to
lay out a shawl in 16micron grey merino with silk tops on it in a
pattern, eeeugh.( It came out lovely , in the end though, less than
100gm in total for a shawl that started out 9ft by 5ft.
Unfortunately, I opened the window when I finished, a stray gust of
wind came from the wrong direction, Picked it all up & blew it off the
table into a long, floaty sausage on the floor. ( the air was purple)
It then took another 2 hours to lift this airfilled sausage on to the
table & spread it back out again. To lay something out like this is,
believe it or not, backbreaking.
good luck, it will be fantastic when you do it . I'm very envious of
your fortune in finding it ,especially in black.
BTW I have been called into work today & tomorrow, so still haven't got
my fibre sorted completely, but Will do it on Friday.
I have been busy over the last couple of days with my new addition, I
adopted a 9yo Maltese little girl on Monday, so it was to the vet's
yesterday for full checkup, vaccination, deworming stuff, blood tests,
microchipping, then off to the shops for all the other parephenalia for
such a little madam. She's only 3 1/2 kilo & I had to get small beds, &
a little kennel (thank goodness for the Warehouse, I got a zip together
foam one for $15.00, couldn't have made it for that. ) I placed the
little kennel inside the other one, as she is so tiny. We have always
had healers before. I am so fortunate to get one that is not a Snappy
Yappy, is used to being outside & in a pen @ times, but is also
housetrained, loves kids ,other dogs & old people. I haven't found any
vices yet, & she handled work fantastically ( I work as an RN in a high
care aged facility.)
Natalie, in answer to your question, if the potential customer is on a
very limited income, teach her to felt , if not , perhaps, like hand
knitting, 2x cost of material + cost to acquire it . others may have a
better idea. Remember, Do Not devalue your work & sell too cheaply,
better to teach ( at a price) than 'give away' what is, in fact your
livelihood. If things are done too cheaply, it devalues it for all of
us, we must always do our best & charge appropriately.
regards, Barb

Hi Wendy
It is in the box that is going today! Any exchange sounds like fun to me!
West Wyalong, I would love to go but it's toooo far away........should have
gone to Bathurst.
Is there any musters closer to Coffs Harbour.
Regards Kerry
I am off to the PO today, can you give me your address, I didn't keep

Then I can post the form to you!

Sorry Natalie, the font is too hard to read again, my dear.
Would you mind using a plain one in a darker colour, as the lovely one
you have used in this E-mail is too pale & fancy for the internet ;(

The font that you have used here is great, Natalie,
sorry to have missed you on Saturday, I look forward to seeing you next
time.
What a lovely acquisition , you lucky thing. The black merino will be
fantastic to felt, but a pain to lay out. I'm envious.

I would like to take part. Can you please pop a form into your fibre exchange box for me?
Maybe this group would like to consider having its own felted scarf exchange. What do people think?

Hi guys
Wondered if any of you had thought of partaking in the scarf exchange this year?
For those who don't know about the scarf exchange it is run annually by the Spinners and weavers guild, this year Sunraysia spinners and weavers are organising it.
What you do is send 150 gm of scoured fibre (whatever type you want!) and send that and an entry form & fee of $11.00 to the guild. They then distribute these packages out so that all who are taking part receive someone else's package. I might get one from someone in Tasmania and someone in QLD might get mine. You then have to make a scarf using any technique you like and yes feltmaking is acceptable. When completed the scarf is returned to the guild who then after an exhibition of them all posts it back to you to keep!
I have been doing this for quite a few years, sometimes I get beautiful pieces other times they are not so crash hot but what I remember is that someone else (who I don't know!) has taken the time to create something for me and that is what is important.
Unfortunately I didn't think about anyone from this group doing it (our fibre group does it every year.) so the closing date for the fibre to be received is the 13 May. You then have a couple of months to complete the item and this year the them is Scarves and Accessories "Lets be fashionable!" in previous years it has been The great Australian Sky, Can you see the colours in the water and I cant remember what else!
You have at least a couple of months to complete your item and then post it back.
Its a lot of fun and if anyone is interested please let me know and I will send you a form!

Hi Wendy it was a lovely weekend, great to be with lots of creative people.
Sorry you couldn't make it sounds like you were certainly not meant to go.
Unfortunately I didnt get much of a chance to look at the scarves find
people always want to pick my brain about needlefelting so often I dont
even get a chance to eat or go to the toilet!!! :-) But I can tell you that
Rachel Meek won numerous prizes.
Thanks for putting the date in the diary I appreciate the help!

I made up my mind to go to Bathurst on Friday night. I got up at 5.30am on Saturday to catch the Bathurst XPT. When I got to Central I found that coaches were replacing the train - and I loathe coach travel.
After much internal debate I finally decided to go by coach but when I went to get my ticket there was no room left on the coach. Guess I wasn't meant to go LOL.
Did you get much of a chance to look at the felted scarves in the competition? I would be interested to know who won and what they made.
Thanks for the heads-up on the next fibre exchange. I've put it in my diary and also in our group's calendar.

Morning all!!!!
Note I didn't say good, I am still waking up after the weekend!!! This week has been a great one, we demonstrated at a spinners and weavers group this week (that is always lots of fun and laughs!), sold one of my sculpture pieces (that helped pay for the weekend!) and we went to Bathurst for the fibre muster!
We had a lovely time at the Fibre Muster at Bathurst. I got to meet Pat face to face for the first time HI PAT!!!!!! and that was lovely, your work is gorgeous and it was so nice to have a face to go with the name! :-) Also got to meet Rachel Meek and Liz Evans (feltmakers) finalyy another couple of ladies who I know but have never met face to face even though we had spoken on the phone.
Bought some lovely fibre of one of the ladies I know from Crookwell 200gm of hand dyed suri (24%) / optim wool top blend, got a lovely wooden sewing box to sit next to my chair (this is to be my B/day pressie from the girls!), a wooden crochet hook holder and some tencil to use in my tapestry weaving assignments.
We met a lot of fantastic ladies, ate far too much food and drank champagne and my eldest daughter Shawna (13) learnt how to make a pine needle basket from a lovely patient lady who was demonstrating basket making. Hubby had a restful time and the youngest daughter Erin (10) just thought the playground at the caravan park was the best and the drive around Mount Panorama!
We were supposed to come home lunch time on Sunday but were invited to have a stand at the local craft fair that was being held. We had another good day spent more money - this time some great glass beads and two wire mini mannequins that I am going to use to create pieces for an upcoming exhibition, and a couple of sheep things a suncatcher and a fridge magnet.
So all in all it has been great, today I am paying for it with a massive sinus attack and children who would much rather stay at home than go to school but one blessing Ken is off work on long service leave so he is taking care of a lot of the domestic front while I get back to work!!!!
The next fibre muster is West Wyalong on May 27 2006 so if you are able to go mark your diaries!!!!
Hi Robin and Helen
I hope you are out there somewhere.
I have checked and they are approved members but maybe they have not been
able to pick up their emails.
I have also approved another new member this morning, Barb you have been
hard at work, it is another member from Victoria Feltmakers.
Cant tell you their name as the email was not signed but WELCOME!!!!
I am a bit concerned and you may be able to help with this Barb. They all
have yahoo email addresses, I am hoping that they realise that they do not
have to use the yahoo email address but can use their own email address.
I forget to check my yahoo one all the time!
Great to see another member!

hello all,
I went of to buy horse food yesterday from a farmer about 1 hours from me.
anyway, i got the hay and some oats that were in a shed
what do you think the shed was normally used for????
SHEARING sheep!
it was full if wool bags that had what he called left over wool or odds - merino.
I was more excited at finding this than the good hay.
I ask what he was doing with it.
he said it will end up in the garden or may sell some here or there!
I ask if i could buy some and how much?
he said $3.00 per kg!!!!! but if i liked i could have some for free.
God smile's on us in some strange way's.
i am now the proud owner of some yummy fine 22 micron merino for free!
I am going to go back and ask if i can look at the other bales next.
while it looked not so nice having been the some had had a possum live in it and some was of lesser quality than others and again some looked yellow and this is why it had been left out.
one needed to be able to SEE past the way it was kept!
I took a high luster well crimped young ewe fleece that looked yellow and had some seed in tips.
but now after 3 hot dip wash , is white and looking far too nice to felt with but should be spun.
next was a white fleece with tons of dirt-soil in it with two moth babies part of it,it also seem to be less stronger staple so will be felted.
both fleece had good staple size.
will let you all know how it goes.
After reading about the fibre being saved-sorry can not find who it came from)
i dug out the angora rabbit and gave it a hot water wash and flea bath and then a nice smelly one.
all thing dead and gone-put it out to dry in the sun for a week.
Wow what a fantastic find! Definitely worth going back for more LOL
