Thank you for sharing your find. Its like being a kid at Christmas when something like that happens -isn't it!The excitement...... the possibilities.... the economic accessibility!!!!!!
Sorry I forgot to sign my post about recycling insect munched fibres.

hello all,
I went of to buy horse food yesterday from a farmer about 1 hours from me.
anyway, i got the hay and some oats that were in a shed
what do you think the shed was normally used for????
SHEARING sheep!
it was full if wool bags that had what he called left over wool or odds - merino.
I was more excited at finding this than the good hay.
I ask what he was doing with it.
he said it will end up in the garden or may sell some here or there!
I ask if i could buy some and how much?
he said $3.00 per kg!!!!! but if i liked i could have some for free.
God smile's on us in some strange way's.
i am now the proud owner of some yummy fine 22 micron merino for free!
I am going to go back and ask if i can look at the other bales next.
while it looked not so nice having been the some had had a possum live in it and some was of lesser quality than others and again some looked yellow and this is why it had been left out.
one needed to be able to SEE past the way it was kept!
I took a high luster well crimped young ewe fleece that looked yellow and had some seed in tips.
but now after 3 hot dip wash , is white and looking far too nice to felt with but should be spun.
next was a white fleece with tons of dirt-soil in it with two moth babies part of it,it also seem to be less stronger staple so will be felted.
both fleece had good staple size.
will let you all know how it goes.
After reading about the fibre being saved-sorry can not find who it came from)
i dug out the angora rabbit and gave it a hot water wash and flea bath and then a nice smelly one.
all thing dead and gone-put it out to dry in the sun for a week.
Wow what a fantastic find! Definitely worth going back for more LOL

BTW has anyone got a webcam? I'm going to indulge. Anna Selvesten in the States has one, she shares online time with another felter, so they can see what each other is felting (or not). It would be a great way to do things 'together' whilst not having to leave your own home, wouldn't it ?
Only problem is, you need to have broadband. (Well Telstra is supposed to make it available for everyone) After not feeling the need for it, then being frustrated @ not having it 'cos of the cost of constant line dropouts & dial up, I now have it . It is also possible that you can get it via HIBIS if not through ADSL. It took 3 years to get the ADSL switched on here. You would need to register interest in it via your IP server, even if you don't need/ want it yet. When they have enough numbers, they have to put it on.

Hi Julie that's a pest about your intolerances, I'm glad your Mum is
better now.
My daughter has the same problem, she cannot eat anything from animals
with 4 legs. She loves custard & icecream though, so grins & bears it.
She's nearly 30, so that's her problem.
I empathise with you about the weight issue, Me too ;-(( I am trying,
slowly, with a low Glucose Load intake . I also cannot eat tomatoes,
lettuce, potatoes, capsicum, & eggplant, or pork & lamb. I can eat
beef. ( which is good, 'cos we grow our own) It is so difficult, with
shift work messing up my metabolism.
Many people who think they cannot eat bread actually have an
intolerance to the preservative in the flour. The yeast is killed in
the cooking, so cannot re-activate. by cutting out all foods with
preservatives, a lot of bloating is alleviated.
Gee we're off the felting subject aren't we?
I have most of next week free, so hope to be able to do some at last.
I'm going to play with the needle felt attachment from Anne Vickrey,
but still have to work out a finger guard for safety. My old machine is
so fast. I have done a little embellishing on to denim. I haven't
tried finer fabrics yet.
Been too busy catching up with emails & online research for cameras to
do much else except work & sleep.
It has been great being able to buy some of the things for myself, to
set up towards semi-retirement. My kids say 'what about some more
furniture'. my husband wanted all my tax return to go into the
mortgage. I said 1/2, then I can have things that can earn me some fun
money as well. I am trying to diversify enough to cope with my short
attention span.
We have our Victorian Feltmakers meeting tomorrow.
I have emailed all the online people in our directory. Unfortunately,
many of the addresses were incorrect, forcing bouncing of the message
several times. However, there has been some feedback, some people will
be joining very soon:)
Does anyone here belong to the Canberra Felters? .How about we all
extend an invitation to the groups that we belong to.? I am happy to do
this with other groups, if no-one else gets around to it. :))
I shall send my packets of fleece on Monday, as I won't get a chance to
sort out the stuff 'til Sunday. Sorry, Wendy. I'm looking forward to it
all.
Have fun, regards, Barb Mewburn
Now, that is what I call resourceful. I'm afraid, though, if I had something like that, I would throw it in the compost and not worry about trying to resurrect it. I like to be able to grab a hold of my tops, or batts and just make felt, not all the other type of work that goes along with it. Sometimes, I don't mind dying, though.
The talk of finding a few moths in the angora and then ditching it -seems a bit of a waste to me. This topic was discussed a many years ago on the feltmakers list.
The suggestions at the time was to zap them in the microwave or freeze them. Remove the offenders and their webs etc and then felt the fibre. Its not like we are trying to spin them =where the length is more crucial. In fact didn't someone say that Ayala (of the first needle felting book fame) call chopped up bits of wool and water -her felting glue.
I remember all this so clearly cause at the time I had the most unpleasant experience of finding a plastic bag of "washed mohair" I had bought at work -FULL of wriggly revolting grubs-mega yuck!!!!! I threw it in my car -thinking I'll take it home and zap it. By the time I remembered I had it in the back -the heat of a Sydney summer and the car had done the deed and they were well and truly dead.
(I heard of someone who used to do all her dying in black plastic bags and the heat of the car in this way.)
OK,picking out the remnants wasn't fun -but I found they tended to cluster to I could just grab and handful and bin it (probably composting would be an even better option) I went on to dye the mohair and used the short and long bits-not for dolls hair as originally needed but to incorporate it as embellishment
I have a digital camera but I don't think it has SLR.
PSP sounds interesting - another thing to add to my wish list LOL.

WENDY, S.L.R is a single- lens- reflex camera,
what you see in the view finder is what will be photographed.
With a non s.l.r the view finder is on one side and so the resulting photo is not what you intended to take.
you are unable to change lens or shutter speed.
Like most things you get different grades.
you can play with shutter speed/light as well as having different size lens for different jobs.
making photos sharper , photo of fast moving objects or photos at night, all by changing the shutter speed.
You can now buy a good digital S.L.R camera to get the best of both worlds!
But they are a bit costly.
P.S.P. is paint shop pro a very popular art program that you can do heaps in, including web pages , animation and a media - videos, it cost only $250.00 , this is good as photo shop is around $1,500.00.
I take photos of my critters and then change them in p.s.p 7 .
I then print and mount and take them off to sell.
I also do digital painting in the program.
I am a nut for the human form, so I do a lot of tastefully semi nude work for people.
They want something beautiful to hang or have or even a gift.
I have to tell you all , I am now a proud owner of a 6 month old white merino ewe - Chloe.
and I am have found some honey merino x 22 mic rams.
just have to decide on who!
I am also now thinking about sharlee sheep farming -in a small way.
Does anyone know how many fleeces does it take to fill a bale?
see ya
You can get a free demo that lasts 30 days off the web site.
If your digital is 2 m.p it is small like mine.
If anyone is looking to buy a digital now please save yourself some money in the long run and buy a 5 m.p. with a min of 3 optical zoom NOT DIGITAL this is a gimmick, it does not zoom in.
I payed $400.00 for my 1.2 m.p 4 years ago and you just about pay this for a good 5 m.p. camera today.

Thank you for your concern of my mother - I went to see her today, and she is home again, looking as though nothing had ever happened to her. The doctors cannot work out why it happened, so it could have been just her rushing around and also eating wrong things. (She had just entertained my sister from the South West for morning tea, and eaten cake).
With regard to my lactose intolerance, I find it just as easy to not have dairy foods. I am a vegetarian since I discovered that all the dairy and red meat were causing a lot of problems with my digestion. Mind you, it has not helped me get rid of any of the excess weight that I carry. I don't drink tea or coffee either, so don't need milk for either of those, and I prefer eating cereals with fruit juice.
Time to get on with more felting now......
Cheers to everyone.....I sent off my package today, Wendy, so hope that you get it soon......it cost me more than I anticipated in Postage, so it has not got enough inside the package to cover the return, I think......See how you go, and let me know when you come to re-send it.
Just confirming that there will be 6 people taking part in this fibre exchange:
Natalie
Sandie
Barb
Julie
Jacqui
Wendy
For those taking part - just to refresh your memories - please put 5 labelled packs of approx 50g of fibre in a small cardboard box, plus a mailing label with your address and $5 to cover return postage.
I think that if you were to contact the Australian Wool Board, you may be able to get a list of current prices that some wools are selling for. Or contact a fairly local wool buyer. It really depends on the class of the wool (eg. micron, colour, brightness, lustre, length and where the wool comes from on the animal. It can also depend on how much dirt and vegetable matter the fleece has in it). I would also see if I could locate a woolclasser in your district and get it looked at.
Best wishes

Hi Natalie,
thank you, that would be great/ I'll dig out the angora tomorrow &
weigh it, so that I can arrange a swap. I don't think it is 200gm
though. Are you still thinking of going to the meeting on Saturday? if
so, I can take it with me. If not, then I'll post it up to you.
Hi Julie,
Aren't the allergies a problem? I have tried all sorts of remedies,
when things are bad, I take Telfast 180. It is the only antihistamine
that works for me well. I get it through Pharmacy Direct, who are a NSW
pharmacy that will mail order. They have a web site too (google it).
Their prices are generally much cheaper than buying locally. One non
NHS script I had was 1/2 price of local pharmacy. NHS are the same, so
I get those here. (sorry to all of you who don't have allergies, but
those of us who do are usually networking to find out what works &
where to get it at the best price.)
regards, Barb
Hi Julie,
I hope all is well & your Mum is settling down now. Had a hiccup with
mine a couple of weeks ago, but at least she was here in the hospital
in Warragul. She's fine now :))
On the subject of lactose intolerance. Golden Glow ( google it in) in
Queensland, has a great range of products at reasonable prices, +
naturopathic advice. They have a product called Lacteeze, (which is
lactase, the enzyme that we need for digesting lactose, as I'm sure you
know. ) I have used their previous product (lactagest) same product,
different name & now superseded, with great success. Maybe it will be
your answer. I just take it with the first mouthful of milk product.
problem solved :))
regards, Barb
Still no results on the tests that have been done (anzac day holiday - no pathologists working), but hopefully she will be coming home tomorrow, so I am not so worried now.
I am an Aquarian, and I am also lactose intolerant (also vegetarian). I am also allergic to some vegetables, so my diet is very bland. I wish that things were different sometimes, because as a child, I used to love drinking milk - but always got a lot of tummy aches afterward.
A bale of wool should hold no more than 200kgs, with the average fleec being about 5 kg...sometimes less, sometimes more. (Just trying to remember things from my days working in the shearing shed on our farm)
With Julie asking if I was going to send a moth eaten rabbit.
I was wondering if others do this and if anyone has bought fibre that came like this?
I would NEVER do so, an assumed that all others would not.
Can one save a fibre that has had this happen to it?
Barb, I had about 200 grams of it .
I would happy to swap suri if you like, I have just clipped my boy 3 week ago.
I work in raw fibre, so would be sending it as is.
there is some V.M in all my fibre but not heaps.
I just comb it or pick it out.

Natalie, I am very sorry that it sounded as though I thought you were contemplating putting the Angora with the moths in the exchange. Sometimes when I say things, they tend to come out the wrong way. What I really meant was that if you had any other Angora, than the moth infested stash. Sorry if it offended you in any way.....not intended.
Wendy....what a great idea for sharing our respective information and sources. A list could be compiled also from the information given when we send in our 50 gram packages for exchange.
Well, My Anzac day did not go as planned. My poor mother collapsed yesterday and was rushed off to hospital, and I along with my father, brother and sister spent all day at the hospital. We were all intending to go down and march in the local parade. Luckily for her and for us, she has now recovered, and it was nothing serious, and she should be coming home tomorrow. But it gives one a big fright when it happens so suddenly like that.

Wendy, are you using digital or film? I will try to find out from my daughter in law, what is the best way to go about it, as she does a lot of architectural photography. I gave her a great book on digital photography , which she uses for teaching purposes. Meanwhile, I don't have any suggestions, sorry regards, Barb On 24/04/2005, at 3:01 PM, Enchanted Wool wrote:

Attached is a photo of fibre I took the other day. I took it outside with the flash off on an overcast day and laid the fibre flat on a sheet of cardboard - but there are still some shadows and a lot of the colour detail in the fibre is lost.
I had to do a considerable amount of editing in Photodraw (lightening, sharpening and changing the saturation) just to get the photo to its current state.
Any suggestions?

Hi Everyone
Thanks Natalie for your comments on my quilt. I have done two panels of it, and now have commenced the third. Actually, this morning, I took it apart as I was not very happy with the way it was shaping up. I will start again.
I went to our Felt West Toss and Tell day today, which is always on the third Saturday of the month, and had a really good day. Not too many people were there because I guess, of the school holidays, but there were enough feltmakers to make it interesting. We generally have a bit of a show and tell section right after lunch, and I took along two scarves, one of them being the scarf that I made out of the fibre that was included in the box of Easter Eggs that I received, and I also took the eggs. Every one loved the eggs. Also included two bags that I had made. I made another bag today, and when it dries, I will take a photo of that one as well.
Wendy.......how many girls are doing the Fibre Excange now? I have the fibre packed up ready to go, but I need to add just either one or two bags of fibre....don't know yet.
Attached is a photo of one of my older projects......I am having trouble putting them onto the site, so Sandy, is it possible that you can do it for me?

The deadline is quite flexible - especially now that new members may be joining the exchange.
