 hi all,
I have been reading some more on the needle felt list group.
A lady  on the list was saying she had bought a machine from a wool show over there.
anyway she went on to say that it was a normal machine with the bobon case and metal plate  taken out  and replaced with a very think foam pad.
Why could i not do this with my treddle singer sewing machine?
any ideas would be great.

Hello Andy .........since you have the time to do some pensive feltmaking, perhaps you would be kind enough to put a photo or two or maybe even more up on the photo site for us all to gawk at.....puh-lease!
If you have had time to look at the other albums, you would have noticed that we that have put up shots, have a very different style of art.....would it not be boring if we were all to do the same thing?
Looking forward to seeing something of your work......
I went back to work yesterday and today......it was quite a shock to see that these two very capable men in the office had left everything piled up on my desk, awaiting my return.  Then I had to run around a bit, doing banking, posted hundreds of invoices out (printed out but not folded into envelopes or posted for the two weeks that I was off work) and had to pick up lots of uniforms for staff, as they had not yet done that.  Well....needless to say, the foot is now swollen up a good deal tonight, so will have to have cold compresses on it.....brrrr.....in this weather.  I have been wearing my sneakers to work, because I cannot fit any other shoe on yet.
Sandie......the fibre that I got from you in the exchange is looking good for a lovely landscape, added to some little noils that I purchased from Helen O'Neill from Sal's Wool Den here in Perth, it will be lovely in the sky section.    Very inspiring.
Warm wishes to all Feltmakers

I all

No this is not feltmaking related but as we are all interested in fibre I
thought you might find this an interesting project or even want to take
part. Just delete otherwise!

Have a fantastic day all!

Sandie (definitely talks far too much, definitely female!)

Believe me, when I'm quiet, you should make the most
of it!!!

Actually, I've just done some research (academic =
common sense) into whether men or women talk more. The
answer seems to be, no-one actually knows, but
everyone thinks they know. Confused? Time to do some
pensive felting...

 Hello everyone!
Well  Barb ,
I learned a new word today  - Garrullous. - talkative, chatty.
So i can say, that i am most garrullous at times too .lol

Wendy , Thank you for your kind words- blush.
Connor will be 5 on the 18th of July, very close to your little boy.
Connor was five weeks early.

Thanks Elly for filling me/us in about yourself. ( being a Gemini - i can't help but wonder)
How lovely to work full time in art.
Does your husband felt as well?

Barb, i do believe  that men ONLY speak when they have instructions  or matter of fact  type speak  .... not just  for the fun of it! or as my husband says because she likes the sound of her own voice! lol
Andy , I am just Joking, well maybe a tiny little bit of truth.

Ladies after seeing photos of Julie and Pat's scarves - JUST WONDERFULL - i think i will stick to soft toy's.
What great ways of enhancing  one's art!
I would be happy to pay  more for such an item.
How wide / long  are they please ?

Stopped into the art gallery to see how my felt art is going - not good- nothing more has sold and the lady at the desk said that not much has sold full stop.
Has anyone else found it slow at this time of year?
I was considering the castlemaine market but we already have  rustic forge and a machine knitter that sells hand painted yarn.

My new project is to learn how to spin/make my own fancy yarns like the one's that have come from France.
You all know the one's that have gold thread and cotton and mohair loopy all ply together - that cost about $13.00 per 50grams.

anyway

I am off to check out the better homes and gardens web site. thanks Wendy.

see you all for now.
p.s Andy do you  sell your work ?
I have been making a little list on what star signs are more into art...so would you and Elly mind telling what star signs you were born under please?

Hi guys

Unfortunately I wont be attending the workshops just could not afford it.
But I will be there helping my friend, she is going two days I think it is
as a trader so please stop by and say hello. Sounds like to much hard work
to have to worry about costumes etc and I go to Canberra a bit so the
tour  wouldn't interest me either so you have made me feel a little better,
I was really disappointed that it was so close and I couldn't justify
going. Just make sure you give us all the run down afterwards!! :-)

 Hi Wendy
The foot has improved to the point where I drove the car for the first time yesterday and then took a limpy walk down to the corner shop to collect some fresh bread and the Sunday Times.  I have only just been able to fit the shoes onto my foot, so that is a bonus.  I will be returning to work tomorrow.

I will be putting the scarves onto this posting.....I don't really think that Pat's scarf that she made for me should go on my album, because I did not make it..........Pat.....would you like to put in under your own name?   So far as I can see, you have not yet established one of your own, so this would be a good start.

I was considering going to the Canberra Convergence myself, but earlier in the year, could not afford it.  I could afford it after selling the house, but I am afraid that I have other plans now......the trip overseas.  I last went to a Convergence in Queensland, and had a great time.  The thing with these convergences, is that although they have tours and things organised, one is not obliged to go on any of them.  I spent most of my time felting whilst there, and each day there were workshops taught by the various attendees.  We enjoyed all of that.  I am sure that if you go, you would enjoy it all.  One of my friends here is WA has been to every convergence since the very start of them and has enjoyed all of them.

Warm Fuzzies to everyone

It's Merino wool and I bought it from the

I am trying very hard to find time to make
Jacqueline's scarf.  As well

a bit nervous about what I will do with the beautiful
blue wool sent to
me.
Must away and make some soup to freeze so's I'll have

Thanks for the sentiments, Natalie   :-)  I like the card .

We all had a fantastic time at the Circus. They are so irreverent, multi talented & funny.  It is a great way to start the Winter off & have reasonable prices for a family.( not that we qualified, 'cos our kids are adults :-D . It was a crisp, cold night, so the walk from Flinders st beside the Yarra was pleasant. The big top is warm, so coats came off. ( of course, I wore my felted one, bringing comments from some of the 'front of house' people. I managed to get some signatures from the artists, on the Tshirt I bought. (A BIG one for me, this time, as usually they don't have one in my size.)

If you ever have the chance to go, please do so, as they have a typical irreverent Aussie flavour. I have seen Cirque du Soleil, they are excellent too, but  nearly 1/2 of that show was 'Dramatical walking around that didn't really entertain, just wasted time' . When I compare the prices, it was $115/ adult, Circus Oz was $45 for best in house. Circus Oz is a smaller company, but  more entertaining, Excellent value for money. They also support underdog causes, eg refugees, as one of their members was one.

I haven't got the number for the 'Hotel Y' yet, but will let you know asap.  It will be great when you can Join VicFelt,  I hope to see you at the Sheep & wool show, I haven't booked accomodation yet, though, for Bendigo. I used to stay in Moama with my Mum, but she's down here now.   LOL Barb

Hi Wendy
Although I did not see the segment on the programme that you mentioned, my mother did, and she was telling me about it.  She drew a sample of the pattern, or resist that was used for the bag, and lo and behold, I have the resist pattern in my stash, as well as a resist for a cover for a coffee plunger, both of which I have had for about 5-6 years.  So as we are often wont to say, nothing is new in the felting world, they only take their turns in coming around and around again.  There are many people being introduced to felting every year, and when they "come up with an idea", it really is a reintroduction of an old idea.  Granted, some people will think of something really new, and think of an easier way to get from start to finish, but on the whole, it is old ideas that are being "re-invented.

But on the whole, it is nice to know that the ways and wonders of feltmaking are still being bought to the public and that they might try "something new".

By the way, I put the two photos of the scarves up on the Exchange album, as I discovered it there.  I did not notice it before.
Cheers

Did anyone see the Felting story on "Better Homes and Gardens" recently?

I didn't - but lots of people visiting my market stall today mentioned it. A few people even bought merino wool tops from me so they could make the bag they saw a professional felter (with probably with years of experience) making on TV - LOL

After the market I looked up the B H & G website. It said "Designers have turned to felt as the material of choice for this winter’s hot fashion accessories" and had photos of upmarket felting accessories, including a felted ring for $135!

There are instructions for making a bag, scarf, coffee percolator cover and latte glass covers. The bag which was featured on TV was quite a complicated project for a novice felter and involved resists, surface decoration and cutting into the felt.

Anyway here is the URL:

You can either download the instructions or get them to send them to you.

Hi Julie & all

Yes it has been very cold, rainy & windy over the last few days. Not the best weather for the stall had on Friday :-(. Hopefully it will be better weather for my stall tomorrow.

How is your foot going? Hope it is continuing to improve. I am getting over my cold and the children will be back at school on Monday (for 4 days then they are on holidays for several weeks!).

I am very tired as I am working about 60 hours a week at the moment (even with sick children) trying to get 3 business ventures off the ground. I am trying to build up a business selling felting & needlefelting supplies on eBay and soon will be launching my own website. I am also having a market stall every week trying to sell my own work. And I have started teaching felting once a week (which thankfully is in recess until next term). Apart from the felting classes I am only just breaking even.

I know that it takes a while to get businesses thriving, but I wish I was making more money as my husband has been unemployed for the past 4 months (and for 2 out of the last 3 1/2 years).

Hopefully the 10,000 felting needles I have just bought will help. I am considering asking the Convergence organisers if I could give every one who attends a free felting needle with my business card LOL.

I am so looking forward to receiving the scarf you have made for me. Please put a photo of it and the one Pat made for you in our Scarf Exchange album.

Well I'd better go to bed as I need to be set up my market stall at 7.30am tomorrow.

Warm wishes
Wendy

Hello Girls

Natalie, I shall certainly keep in touch, I will be getting a lap top so that I can keep up my contact with everyone.  I would be quite lost without it, actually.  So you girls have not got rid of me and my big mouth that I put my foot into, so very easily.  This will be my third trip overseas, as I have been to Europe and have been to Japan.  Mind you, whilst I was still married, to either of my husbands, I never had the chance to go.  Neither of them had any ambition.  I have worked hard in the last 15 years to be able to afford the trips, and have made some wonderful friends while doing it, too.  I have also travelled extensively around Australia, even down to Tasmania.

Wendy, I finished crafting your scarf today, packaged it up and will be posting it on Monday, when I do go back to work.    I took photos of it before wrapping it up.  I do hope that your children are all back to normal, whatever normal is, by now, and that you did not suffer with the cold.  Speaking of colds, I have not had much contact with a lot of people for the past two weeks, but somehow, I have gotten myself a case of the sniffles and feel as though it is a cold on the way.  So I am into the lemon juice in a big way.  It has been very cold here lately, so I might have just got a chill, getting up during the night, which happens to most of us when we reach our mid fifties.

Pat, I have received the scarf which you made for me.  I must confess, I did not think a lot about the colours before I sent them off, and I hardly ever wear green, but it is my granddaughter's favourite colour, so it is going to be her scarf.  It is very pretty and what you have done with the colours, and the little flowers is very pretty.  A very unique way of finishing off the two ends, as well.  Very nice, thank you.  The weather you have in Victoria and New South Wales must be a whole lot cooler than we have here.  Currently, it is 18.5 degrees inside my house today, and it is 3.05pm.  My house is insulated though, so does not get too cold.  We have been having some cold nights though.  Anyway, my grand daughter lives further down south, in Busselton, so would appreciate the warmth that the scarf will afford her.  I took two photos of it as well.

Best Wishes and Happy Felting to you all

Hi Natalie

When does your little boy turn 5? Mine is 5 on 28 August. He's starting school next year too (And I still have to wipe his bottom too).

Wendy

P.S. You are not a hopeless mum - you come across as a very gentle, loving and giving person in your posts and I'm sure that applies to your parenting too.

hi Kerry

Good to hear from you.

I was a little disappointed with the program too. Every evening seems to be taken up with social events -  a lot of which require costumes that I don't have the time, money or inclination to make. I guess it will be nice to visit Floriade but I don't really want to spend a whole day doing a tour of Canberra when I could be felting LOL.

Anyway it will be good to meet you, Barb & Pat there. (Hope I haven't left anyone out!)

Hi everyone
I have been too busy to talk, just managing to skim thru the emails.
Can anyone fill me in on the Canberra Convergence.  I feel a little
disappointed with the programe, is it just me?  I thought it would be full
of things to do (felting wise), not interested in bellydancing etc.  Is it
just ME.
Don't think I've said much since Orange, so Pat it was really good to meet
you.  I've been so so busy that I'm not game to answer the phone at the
moment.  Lucky it can't ring while I'm on the internet.
Must go, will catch up with the gossip next week.
Make the most of the cold weather, happy felting,
Kerry.

Hi Andy and Welcome
Please tell us more about yourself, including where you are from etc.  I am from Western Australia, soon to be going overseas, but will be in regular touch, as I plan to have my lap top with me all the way.  I am going to USA first, to do some workshops, conduct some workshops, visit lots and get a general rundown on the felting practices in US as compared to Aus.  Then I will be off to Japan, and some other countries along the way.  I will probably be away for about 12 months if I don't get homesick to quickly, or the money runs out too soon.

I have been felting now since 1992 and was a spinner prior to that.  I do not profess to be a real professional, and sometimes I get a little slack and the ideas keep drying up, but on the whole, I can help out with a few tips here and there, as can a lot of other members of this list.

Bye for now, and happy feltmaking all

Hi All
Just returned from Mudgee this morning . Took a week long class with Leah Jones. Picked up a few good tips and and made some new friends. The hat class I had hoped to take was cancelled.
The food was just wonderful and the wine tasting tours every afternoon were great fun. They will hold it again next year but in early Aug. instead of June.
Glad the scarf arrived okay Julie, I was influenced by some scrumbled scarves I saw.
Loads and loads of ideas floating around in my head and a new felted jacket in my closet.

Hi everyone,
Hey Julie, great news about the sale of your house! You will have a
fantastic time overseas, I'm sure. Do you have room in your expandable
carpet bag? ;-) I'm sure that all the others will agree with me in
wishing that we could come along too. Have a wonderful time. I hope your
ankle heals soon, without complications. :-)

Wendy, there's nothing worse than having to be Mum, wife, boss, juggling
the sick kids, going to doctors, etc, when you feel awful yourself, is
there? get well soon. Do you have the school holidays from Friday?
Please don't worry about my scarf, I'm not in a hurry. Whenever you have
time will be a wonderful surprise for me.

What a wonderful buy with your needles, I'm sure it will work out well
for you. Wheat Carr had some good advice. Many of the sellers seem to
use the electrical foam that we use for needlefelting, to pack them
too. they have been packed in the end of a sliver of foam, if by 10. I
have bought bulk sewing machine needles in little plastic boxes, before,
if they are packed closely, they will not be damaged, in transit.
Perhaps you could check out the plastic container manufacturers. Many of
them sell generic containers cheaply. If you had small containers, like
film containers, you could put a little piece of foam ( doesn't have to
be round, could be square), in the base, to poke the needles into, if
there are not so many. This would be safe to send in the post.

Natalie, have you a sample pack from First Edition Fibres in Euroa? they
are very reasonable & helpfull. We have a good stock of fibre available
at our meetings, sourced from various places. Most of our Merino is
22micron.
I use builders plastic (available at your local hardware), to cover my
table, which is chipboard, that was sealed, but my adult son used a
rotary knife on it, & my husband cut it in half for transport,so it is
now not impervious to water. The clear builders plastic is strong &
cheap. It is also good to wrap unfinished rolls in.
I'm going to the sheep & wool show, will probably be demonstrating on
the Victorian Feltmakers stall, come over & make yourself known. :-* BTW
are you going to the 10th birthday bash in August at the Hotel Y.
fashion parade, dinner & FUN $39 head. There will be billitting for
country girls, or cheap rates available at the Hotel for Vicfelt members
as Robyn Steel Stickland's husband is the manager there.

Rae, I haven't had time to do more than look at & think about your fibre
yet, I have some ideas. I have been busy in every other direction over
the last few weeks, :-( but hope to get to it soon :-)

2 of our children & their spouses, + our 3 1/2 y/o grandson are going to
see Circus Oz on Saturday. It is a yearly ritual that my husband & I
carry out, as it is our anniversary (34th) on Sunday. Last year was the
first time any of our children had come along. Brendan (GS) remembers
'the man riding his bike upsidedown'. What a thing for a 2 1/2 y/o to
remember . His mum was astounded when she told me . BTW he now uses the
loo. (Nannas are wonderful :-D He is sooo proud of himself. Gee I was
lucky, mine were out of nappies by age 2 .

Maybe I shall get some ideas from the Circus, for some felting.

I'm waiting to get my sewing machine back, so that I can finish the
needle felted dog coat that I have made for Dimity.( It started as a
sampler, to see what I could do with a piece of prefelt, dog hair &
tops, to use the Pierrot with. I haven't had time to do anything else on
it , though, as the garden called in fine weather.

Happy felting to all,
regards, Barb Mewburn.

 Wow, what great news Julie!
You lucky duck you  - going overseas.
I would like to go back to England  one day to see family myself.
I hope you do get time to drop us a line every now an then with all  the sight seeing you could be doing.

Wendy - I do so feel for you!
I know all too well what it is like when all three kids get sick and YOU are one that has to attend to them ALL at the SAME time. lol
My boy's are 4, 9, an 11 , with the 11 year old thinking he's the boss most of the time.
And you are so busy with all your other things going on.
Being a new needle felter, i would not know yet if any of them rust.
I would be careful with buying so many unseen.
I would be interested in your beginners needlefelt book too.
I have one from ashfords already but always interested in others that don't break the bank.lol

Elly - i carded your lovely soft pink fibre last night.
It looks great as a felted batt.
Can i ask you where you bought your fibre from? and what type is it please?
Will be doing Elly's scarf over the next few days.
Another question - I am starting to feel it could be a lot better (time wise) to buy roving or bags of clean fibre.
What should i expect to pay for say 500gram lots of merino, or alpaca, or crossbred? and what is the normal micron count you all use?
or do you all just go be how soft it feels by hand or sample?
I have just one more question?
I am sure we have chatted about this not long ago.
But ... what  does one use to protect a wood dinning table?
If i was to wet felt on it.
After all the talk about saving water and not needing to use much, i have done well ,by only using  1/4 of what i have done in the past!
I hardly had any drips on  the floor!
My boy's are on holidays come Friday for two weeks so i may not get much of a chance to chat .
Take care all

p.s is anyone from our list going to the sheep& wool show at bendigo in July?
I would love to meet up with anyone who is.
