Hi Julie

So sorry this happened to you. It is such a violation to have one's home treated like that. Hope next week is better for you.

Wendy

P.S. Everyone at the Guild Open Day was very impressed with your scarf

Hello Fellow Feltmakers

Sandie, your house will sell.....it is waiting for the person that wants it most comes along, or until you yourselves are really ready to move.
I can tell you, that I am really ready to move now.....even though I have not done any packing up yet.   Yesterday afternoon, when I arrived home from work, as the garage door went up, I noticed something strange in that my side gate was propped open.  I thought at first that my brother in law had come to take one of the tables that I borrowed from my mother to do the quilt on, back to her and had forgotten to shut the gate.  When I walked a bit further in, the fly wire was laying on the paving, and my kitchen window was broken and wide open.  I HAD BEEN BURGLED.  I tell you, I feel sick still.   I went into the house, they had ransacked the pantry, my buffet, taken my digital camera, which was near the computer, and in my bedroom, they had ransacked all my drawers, clothing thrown all over the place, and my jewellery gone.

I got the police in straight away, then the glazier to fix the window, as it was freezing cold.  Then this morning, the Forensic Officers came around and dusted everything for fingerprints.  I put in a claim with my Insurance company, and now I have to make a list.  They even ransacked my wools and scattered beads all over the carpet in one of the rooms.  I just feel so violated!  They did not take things like the computer, TV or DVD, because I think they were only looking for the small stuff.  They were extremely stupid though, because although they took the Digital camera, they left the books and the battery charger, and the cord that you connect to the computer with.  Once the battery life runs out, they will have to buy a new battery, and that will be expensive.

Well, I hope that everyone has a better week than me.  I am sure it will improve though.

Take Care

HI Pat

Thanks for that information. At the Guild Open Day yesterday I heard that Rachel is ill with pneumonia, so I might wait a while before contacting her about the felting needles.

I saw some of her dyed tops at the Glenora Weaving Supplies stall - great colours but a bit out of my price range ($8.50 for 50g). I'm a bargain basement felter at the moment LOL.

Once i get one, it never leves home.

Jacqui - I am  sorry to hear your are not well, hope you get better  soon.
Well done on what "I"  am sure is the sale of your two scarves Jacqui!
All the best for the market stall too.

Yes, is is sad that Tracy has closed her doors, her spun angora rabbit / merino was wonderful, as well as all her spun yarns.

Wendy, I will join you in that dream!
Of opening a mini mill.

Julie, your saying of the week has to surely be on my own list ?????. lol
"Try not to put both feet in your mouth.....you will end up with not a leg to stand on!"
When i was little and not so little, my mum was forever telling me off and saying that i had as much "tack" as a sledge hammer!
The funny thing is , the more i tried NOT to do this the  more I did.
At one  point in my life, i gave up speaking to people.
Not any more!

Hi Rae,
No worry's about my scarf.
When your ready.
I know how hard it can be to get things done, with so many non felt things to do.

Hope everyone else has stayed warm by the fireside - i found a good "how to knit" book  by Debbie Bliss and i am into this tonight.

take care all

p.s just a note to say to anyone that has family or friends in the U.K  (like myself) that i hope all yours are  well and safe - re: the bombs - mine are fine thank god.

It was great to meet you too Sandie.

I haven't been to the Guild since last year so it was great to be there again among people who share my passion for fibre.

Apart from the Corriedale I bought from you (LOVE that colour), I came away with a pair of knitting needles and some weaving sticks for my daughter.

Good luck for your needlefelting workshop in a few weeks.

Subject: [AussieFeltmakers] Guild Open Day

Hi all
Just thought I would let you know how the open day at the Spinners &
Handweavers guild at Burwood went!
They had a great lot of stalls with lots of bits and pieces to add to your
stash.
Managed to come home with not too much extra fibre this year thank goodness
though a few new books and a new tapestry weaving boobin managed to find
their way into my bay! :-)

Hi Wendy, it was great to finally meet and good to see another needlefelter
around! You had some lovely yarns.

Wendy was wearing the scarf that Julie made for her and Julie, well done it
was beautiful!!!

Guild days are always great it is so nice to meet with kindred spirits and
to see all the new products people have, the worst thing, never enough
money to buy all the things you would like to buy! :-(

Canberra Guild also had an open day today and apparently it was a huge
success too, nice to see that finre crafts are still going strong!

Hi Rae
I was just questioning my own memory, and could have been talking to Jenny Tate at the Retreat about you.  I wonder?????  I have known Jenny for years - I used to belong to the Bunbury Felters, and lived in Busselton for many years.  I also know MegFirman also.
I see you don't have far to go to Craft House, then.

Hi Julie
Good to hear you your foot has healed enough to get back to work - but do take care not to overuse it. I injured my knee last year and it was fine until I returned to work - it was sooooooooo hard to not do all those little jobs which require standing up and running around. Anyway take care!
Yes, I do plan on being at the Toss n Tell on the 16th and will be bringing a friend.
Your trip sounds so exciting - I haven't been to the U.S. but have been to Europe and U.K. a few times and just love the 'oldness' of it all, different cultures and of course the arts and crafts. I know you will have a wonderful time.
Don't know either Karen Wood and  Jennifer Blair. I live in Alexander Heights which is north of the city along Alexander Drive. I do know Jenny Tate from Margaret River and Meg Firman from Augusta.
Keep well and see you on the 16th.

Hi Rae

Thanks for your concern over my foot.  It is a lot better, and I have been back at work all last week, and into the second week back, but for some strange reason, today it was hurting.  I guess these things take a while to heal, and I am just too impatient with things like that.

When I was at the Retreat, I shared a room with Karen Wood and  Jennifer Blair.  One of those ladies (can't remember which one.....I have a "senior's moment" )  mentioned that she knew you, but I thought that she said that you lived down near Binningup somewhere.  Maybe I was wrong.  Where do you live?

I will be going to the Toss and Tell day on Saturday 16th, and I definitely keep a look out for you.  It is also the AGM of the FeltWEST on Saturday 6 August, and we are looking for all of the members to attend.  It is really the only chance a lot of us members get to know what is going on  within FeltWEST, and to have our say, because we do not have any other meetings, apart from the Committee Meetings, and only the committee attend those.

I have not been doing any felting over the past week because I have been very busy elsewhere occupied.  I have quite a lot of organising to do in the ensuing weeks before the take over of the house, including finding a place to live before I am ready to go overseas.  I will not be ready to go before about October/November sometime, but I am thinking that I may even postpone it for a few more months, so that I can go over these to co-incide with their Spring, in about March of next year.

See you hopefully in another week and a half.
HELLO TO EVERYONE ELSE ON THE LIST......
Cheers

Hi Julie

Sorry to hear that the foot is still causing you some trouble, but
congratulations on the sale of the house - I have to say I am envious! :-)

We have had a few people through but no one seems to be able to make up
their mind or they are too fussy! I know that obviously the right house is
not available for us yet other wise we would be moving so I need to be patient!

Take care of yourself while you are packing up etc and make sure you dont
wear yourself out!

Once again what a wonderful scarf you made Wendy, it looked fantastic on her!

Hi Natalie,
The attachment costs $9 to mail. This includes the attachment with some extra needles and foam to use when you convert the machine. The attachment slips over the bar that holds the needle. It should work on a treddle machine. Remember you have to remove the bobbin case and/or any metal in the machine that the needles could hit.

Thanks for your interest!

Hi Julie

Thanks for that information.

I have checked out the Treetops site - very beautiful fibre but quite expensive! I would need to buy over $500 worth from Treetops to get a very modest wholesale discount. I used to get a 40% discount from Margaret Peel's for 10 or more batts - so ending up only paying about $14 per batt.

Couldn't find Helen Stumpkat, Sal's Wool Den or Rachel Meek on the net. But I guess I might meet some of them at the Convergence.

I have dreams of turning my garage into a mini mill and buying a picker and carder from Margaret Peel's so I can make & sell my own felting batts. Only problem is that the garage is full of my husband's stuff and I don't have the thousands of dollars it would cost to buy the machinery LOL.

 Hi Wendy
You wrote to the list.................

I will especially miss the multicoloured merino felting batts & rainbow dyed wool as no-one else in Australia sells these.

about Margaret Peel's business closing.  I would like to let you know that she was not the only one in Australia that sells the multicoloured merino felting batts and rainbow dyed wool.

Nancy Ballesteros, of Treetops Colour Harmonies in Western Australia does these, plus they are also available from Helen O'Neill of Sal's Wool Den, in WA.  Also, on the Eastern Seaboard, there is Rachel Meek and I am sure that you will find out more from the Convergence.  I think Helen Stumpkat from Queensland also does them.  Also, log on to www.martasyarns.com.au to check out her felting supplies section.  She supplies some marvellously rainbow dyed yarn, so I could not imagine that if she has felting supplies, she does not have any tops as well.

I hope that I have helped you out with another source or two.

Hi Wendy

I am very pleased that you like your scarf.  When I saw your wool, I just knew that the silk chiffon would go very well with it, but did not have enough of it to do all over.  It is a pity that the photos do not show the detail of the beading on the reverse side....in fact, the detail on the right side does not show up in the photo all that well.  I am happy that my 13 years of feltmaking has amounted to something at least.  I am very modest when it comes to my abilities.  I am no real artist, and I struggle with thinking up a lot of ideas.  Even then, when I have the imagination, it does not always translate onto the felt or even the paper the way I envisage them.  Oh well....it will come together one day I hope.  I know that I am more confident with my ability to produce well felted fibre, but I struggle with the Artist in me, and that is why I put the name FeltART on my swingtags and namecards - I hope to convince myself that I may be better than hopeless.

We  were introduced to the art of pinmaking at our Retreat, so I have gone mad and made quite a few - all quite different.  I made some to go with my bags, scarves and some just to have on a nice sweater or coat lapel.  They can also be used on a waist wrap, skirt and hat.

Warm regards

Jacqui, I am sorry to hear that you have been unwell.  I hope things are on the "up and up" now.  Lindy or Linda....I know of two of them that go to FeltWEST meetings.  One is tall and slim with very straight short grey hair and one is shortish, plump and has long light brown hair.  The tall one is Linda Riccio...she took over as Treasurer from me, and has just handed it over to the other Lindy......the tall Linda lives not very far from where I live....about 5-10kms, and I rather think that it may be her that you are referring to, because she came to my place to drop some gear off for me whilst I was incapacitated, and I think that she mentioned that she was going away.

Elly.......I have found out the hard way how to upload photos to the Yahoo site.  If you go to the link under this posting, just like you would if you are going to look at the photos, click on it, and enter the site.  Get into the Albums by clicking on the photos word at the left side of the page, and follow the instructions as to how to create a photo album with your name on it.  Then click on add photos and a box will come up for the name of the file that belongs to your photo (assuming that you have stored them in files in your computer).  Then scroll down after putting the info in, and click on upload.  Then have a look at your photo on your own album, and while you are about it, you can have a look at all the rest of the photos of the other members.  Have fun doing it.

We have been having very cold weather just this week.  The night before last, it was minus 3 degrees where I live, which is about 35 kms north of Mandurah.  It also snowed at Norseman, so I heard, and Bunbury got extremely cold.  My daughter lives in Busselton, so she would have felt the cold also, but it is protected by the Geographe Bay, so maybe it did not get as cold.

I read something today, which has particular meaning to me....."Try not to put both feet in your mouth.....you will end up with not a leg to stand on!"
On that note, I will leave you all in peace.
Warm regards

 Julie

Hello All,
Natalie,
My scarf you made arrived in the mail today and it's gorrrrrgous!
You've put a lot of thought into it
and I especially liked the red bits with the main pink colour - it
makes it more versatile to wear.  I would like to post it on the web
site.  Do I email a pic to you Wendy and you post it on the website?

Jacqui,  I finished felting your scarf but feels it needs some trimming
which I will not be able to do for another week as I'm flying to
Brisbane tomorrow for my Uncle's 90th Birthday.  Must water the pot
plants and pack now.   Regards, Elly.

The scarf & pin you have made for me is so wonderful. The detail is just amazing & they is so superbly made. I am in awe of your incredible feltmaking skills!

I wish everyone on the list could see them - I will certainly wear them when I meet Sandie on Saturday! Thank you so much.

Barb
I have nearly finished your scarf - have been waiting on some skeleton leaves to arrive from the USA so I can finish it off. I'm planning to complete it on Monday so you should get it late next week. Just warning you that it's a bit unconventional - I hope you don't mind LOL.

 Hello everyone,

Elly, I am very happy that you liked my scarf and thank you for saying so.

I hope you enjoy your trip.
Did you not go on a weekend away not so long ago?
It would be wonderful to get away some time - but how do i find a person with multi task knowledge to look after the many different pets i have.lol

I am starting to try my hand at  some felted home items like a cushion.
I have been wanting a lime green and lilac cushion for my bed for age's and could not find it, so i have decided to make it!
So i plan to use some of the bright green fibre i got from the fibre exchange - i am sorry but i do not remember who sent. - but love the colour!

On a felt note, can anyone tell me why i found the pick merino roving from Elly hard to felt?
Elly's fibre was the first time i had used  roving.
It took a bit longer than alpaca and i even felted it twice, because i was not happy with it to start.

I know you are all probably sick of hearing about my fibre finds but i just have to tell someone!

So here i go again, I went off to kyneton again to get some true black fibre but i do not seem to be able to find any -raw that is- anyway, i did find a truly yummie soft grey 18 micron or lower,  merino fleece all 5 kg of it!
So very very soft and only for $4.00 per kg!
While i was there i also got a what they call black 20 micron merino fleece- but it is really a dark  solid chocolate colour. - this was only $2.00 per kg.

Does one have to buy dyed roving to get true black?

I also tried to make a bag out of the black alpaca batt from margerat peels but it did not want to felt really well and just kept losing fibre every time one touched it, even when dry!
I still have a 200gram batt left untouched, i hate it and will not be using it again, it cost me $20.00, somebody can have it for $12.00 if they know how to use it.
And no, i have not said anything to Tracy incase it's me and not the fibre.!

What i don't understand is .... how can the wool store sell such stunning fleeces SO VERY CHEAP?
I went  to some of the Internet sites in OZ that sells merino  and the grey fleece would have cost me $80.00 per kg.

On to a new subject .. i have started to hand knit, does anyone know of a good easy to follow book i could buy for around $15.00?

I am also looking for a bond amazing sweater machine - can anyone help?
thanks
p.s does everyone understand what creative digital imaging is?
I had a lady ask me what is was and am now wondering if i need to change the name??

Hi everyone,

I have been unwell, but am getting back to things slowly this week.

Lovely to read everyone's news.

I am sorry about Margaret Peel's Fibre Supplies closure - it is a shame but someone may take over the equipment and start a new business.

Julie mentioned Marta's yarns - she definitely does have tops as well as yarn.  She had a felted scarf in the recent Scarf Lane Market run by Craft Victoria.  I went along to the opening and met a few fellow feltmakers.  There was one lady called Linda (or Lindy) who knew our very own Julie from Feltwest meetings.  Does this name ring a bell Julie?

I also spoke with a feltmaker who moved east from WA a year or so ago and she is setting up a business selling fine 19 micron wool tops.  She hopes to have batts available by Christmas time and will stock some of Nancy's silk products as well.  She is not quite up and running yet but will email me when she is open for business and I will pass on all her details to the list.

I will put info and pictures from the Scarf Lane Market and exhibition up on my felting blog in the next day or so.  I was really surprised to see so much felt work.  It is lovely to see what others are up to.  I couldn't find two of my scarves, so I have a feeling they may have sold (my kids keep telling me they have just been stolen!).  It's nice to think that someone could be wearing one of my scarves on these cold mornings.

A special apology to Pat - I haven't made your scarf yet due to illness and the also because I have been madly preparing for my first market stall this Sunday.  I am looking forward to making it next week when the children are all back at school.
Thanks for your patience.

Any hints or tips on running a successful market stall from you seasoned veterans out there would be greatly appreciated!!

Best wishes,
Jacqui

Cheers

Happy Hunting......

Subject: The end of Margaret Peel's Fibre Supplies

Dear Customer,

It is with great regret that I have to inform you that Margaret Peel's Fibre Supplies shall be closing it’s doors permanently as of today the 4th July 2005.

As some customers know two of us started this business, Margaret Peel & myself,

It was a great working relationship that lasted 18 years, up until Margaret‘s death in April 2001.

I have been mostly by myself since then with the fibre supplies and have built the business up to a point that I can no longer cope and am now suffering exhaustion, if I keep going my health will suffer immensely.

With the huge amount of paperwork related to GST & accounts etc, plus the property paperwork that is ever growing with GST and the new cattle tagging system I have decided to call it a day and concentrate on my half of the work with the property.

I know people say put on staff etc, I’m sorry with work safe, wages, insurance and all the other related costs I do not wish to head in that direction.

I am so truly sorry it was not an easy decision to make, I considered the amount of orders that have been running late and the hours I have to do to keep up are too much.

I will be taking care of all orders that are already all my books, and I’m very grateful for everybody’s patient’s, I shall be advertising the Machinery & Stock up for sale on the web site until all is basically sold.

Due to an agreement I made with Margaret the name Margaret Peel’s fibre supplies shall not be sold as a business, it shall be dissolved.

Whom ever purchases the machines shall start up as a fresh business, and I am more than willing to show them how to operate and maintain the machines, also if they are interested how to make the products I produced.

I would like to thank everybody that has supported me & a big thank you to all my customers,

It is with great sadness I have to say goodby.

Best wishes

Tracy Bradberry

Hi Julie
Hope you recover soon. I have just returned from a lovely warm holiday in Port Douglas visiting my cousin. I am hoping you will be at the next Toss n Tell so we can meet before you leave on your long holiday.
Port Douglas was idyllic and walking on the beach each morning was amazing after all the rain and cold weather we had been experiencing in Perth.
regards

Subject: Re: [AussieFeltmakers] What is everyone up to?

Hello Girls

I sold my house this week, and now I can make plans for my trip overseas.  I plan to be going for anything between 6 and 12 months, but still will be able to remain in contact with everyone via the internet and this list.  I am not sure of the exact date that I will be going, but even though I am reluctant to spend two winters back to back, I was hoping to see the Autumn in Oregon and Arizona and  California, then to spend the winter in Florida and Georgia.  It will not be as cold down there as in the Northern states.  Then move further north as the spring and summer comes upon us.  I am hoping to be able to travel around to meet a lot of our fellow feltmakers in various states of America, maybe do some workshops etc, even conduct some workshops in places that do not have much of a representation of our passion.  I am lucky to have relative over there, and they have offered their hospitality as much as I need.  I can used their addresses as a base.  After doing that in USA, I then plan to go to Japan for a couple of months at least, to stay with friends there, and get to know the place a little better than I did the last time I was there, and also go to Europe for a short while, to visit some of the areas that I never did whilst I was there last.

I am still off work with my foot still all strapped up, hoping that the doctor will give it an all clear to go back to work next week.  So far, I have not been able to do any felting of any large items that require me at my table on my feet, but this afternoon, I plan to set the table up and make a start on Wendy's scarf with the wonderful plum colours.

At the Retreat that I went to a week and a bit ago, I made a bag from a lot of the blue shades of fibre that I was sent in the Fibre Exchange.  I plan to take a photo of it today and put it up on the gallery, so you all should be able to see it.

Take over in my house will not be for a couple of months yet, so that gives me time for my foot to heal, packing to be done, and some projects to be finished and hopefully some sales to be made.  Most of my gear and furniture will be put into storage, as will my car, because I do plan to return one day.

Warm regards to everyone

Welcome Andy
My name is Rae and I work mainly with wool tops but have recently bought a Babylock Embellisher which allows me to do the most amazing projects using  needlefelting.
I only joined the group a short time ago and thoroughly enjoy the contact of so many people of similar interests. The advice and ideas have been very helpful as I am sure you will find out for yourself.
I live in Perth, Western Australia and am a member of FeltWest.
Nice to meet you.
