The Alpaca felt is dry. Side I did more rubbing is very smooth, other side a little hairy. Shaved the other side with a Bic razor and that took care of the fuss. Finished felt is very strong and feels very silky to the touch. Shrinkage about 25%.
Second experiment:  Nancy of Treetops Colour Harmonies has a new range of tops called Nuance superfine merino (18.5micron). These have been commercially dyed to her specifications and have a hand dyed look. I tried making some into batts. Thought it might be too fine for my carder but it works.
Next I will try some multi coloured batts using the Nuance range. I think there are about 32 colours in the range. I'm waiting on the rest to arrive.
Should have these for sale soon.
Convergence was very inspiring and entertaining. So nice to put faces to so many familiar names. Weather was good and the felt creations, fashion show and felt exhibition showed what a great bunch of talented felters were in attendance. Very windy so not too much felting was done in the week but traders did a roaring business.

Hi all.
Today is experimenting day.  I have just made some natural black alpaca batts and felted a sample. It felted into a nice strong piece but seamed to shed short fibres when I was fulling it. Added a little more soap and hot water and rubbed it some more and this seemed to help, just brushed off the lose bits and it is drying now. At one point it was very fussy which I kind of liked, made an interesting felt but wouldn't be too good if it continued to shed. Its drying now and I will let you know how the finished piece looks.

Hello Everyone

Time goes by so quickly when one is busy.  I am still waiting on the reports on the Geelong Forum if any of you went, and of course, the Canberra Convergence.  Please tell us about it all, as I am hanging out to know.

I have been busy making lots of little things out of my felted samples, so that I can join my sister and mother in holding a stall at one of their local fairs.  I have made lots of cards, glasses cases, hair clips, felted soaps, bookmarks and a few Christmas tree decorations along with lots of hair ties out of felted cords.  I am hoping they all sell well – I know that I cannot charge too much for any of them, because of the nature of the day, but at least it will pay for my petrol to get there and back, and I will be able to spend the day demonstrating feltmaking and sharing the time with my family members.

Hope everyone has been very busy making felt……..sure seems that way, since no one has been on line lately.

Cheers to all

Hi Barb and all.
No Barb I won't be selling at convergence but hope to take a verity to work on but will have to make them up today as I have just had two big orders that took a lot of what I was going to bring. Wow that was a long winded sentence.
Will really enjoy the week away. Ken will drive me to Canberra as I hate to drive and will either return with Rachel Meek or take the train to Sydney. My Canadian Granddaughter will be arriving in Sydney a week Friday. She has a work visa and can stay for a year .

Hi All,

I'm packing too, have been soo busy, with  extra shifts at work, a mild case of chickenpox(yes, I had it 50 years ago) , Sick ones at work, no felting, apart from the workshop i attended as haven't had the extra energy. Ah well, that's all changing now. I'll have another car ( bought my son's Subaru :-) :-)  Now I have to pay for it.  I've just picked it up  :-) I've decided to drive, so that I can visit on the way back & fit in more stuff  :-D Any way, I'll be able to take my massage table with me, so look out ladies, I love doing massage ( I am a qualified massage therapist)

Rae, the finishing details on your scarf are still in my head, I just haven't had the extra energy to work on it on my time off, I'm sorry.  I hope to be invigorated  at the convergence.

I haven't prepared Anything for the Convergence, so will have to be busy or just a watcher, there. I'm taking my camera with me, so hope to be able to take some pickies.  I'm a night-owl, thanks to years of night nursing. That's when I'll no-doubt be busy.

Pat are you taking any batts for sale at all [  :-X ] ( I love your samples, but haven't been able to do anything about working out my shopping list yet.)

Kerry, are you bringing any of your skeins? Are you coming by train or car? do you still have a Roberta for sale?

Sandie, I'll catch up with you properly, this time. I hope to do a workshop with Birgitte too, as she is coming here at the end of October.  I have to check with  Lyn first, as I also have to change my roster, to do it.  I did one with Ewa Kuniczak, which was great. I've nearly finished the doll from the workshop. I should have done it by now, but unwellness prevailed :-(

I'm staying on campus, to make the most of the time there, besides which, it's a great way to meet everyone, isn't it?
I believe they supply bed linen, but I guess if I want to ensure cotton sheets, I'd better take some.

Julie, sad that you can't come, but congratulations on the publication in Echoes.

I do agree with the others, that we should keep our group to Australasia (or maybe the Southern Hemisphere, as there are a few in South Africa & the Falkland Islands.)
regards, Barb.

HI Julie

Congratulations on getting published internationally

Yes I did go to the exhibition (it's just around the corner from my house) but I don't know the artists personally.

But you have just given me an idea - I will do some flyers for our group and take them to the Convergence.

To all of you Aussie Feltmakers out there.

I am also green with envy about some of you going to the Convergence next week.  I really wanted to go, but could not afford it.  I thoroughly enjoyed it when it was in Queensland in 2001.  By the way…..we had to take our own bed linen, so I expect you will have to do so again this time.  Birgitte is a marvelous feltmaker and artist, and I wish I could go to her classes too.  I am also envious of the fact that Alexander Pilin will be coming to Australia a couple of months after I leave for my overseas trip.  But I will be going to visit people like Pat Spark, Chad Alice Hagen and Marie Spaulding along with Loyce Ericson.

Rae, have a good time at Fibres West, and don’t forget to do a sort of a report……it would be good for our newsletter also.

Girls, I do hope that other Aussie girls and boys are going to join our little group…but I tend to agree that it would become too huge if we have an open invitation to other countries to come in.  Although I do agree with Wendy that New Zealanders would be an asset, and would not make it too huge.

Wendy, I have just received my copy of Echoes…..and I wonder….did you go to the Exhibition at the Ewart Gallery in Willoughby in April?  Do you know Fiona Wright, Jan Clark and Marie-Therese Wisniowski?  Perhaps you could influence them to join our conversation group.

Speaking of the Echoes…..I am now an “Internationally published Feltmaker  My quilt was published in the latest edition of the Echoes.  It is a pity it is only in black and white, and loses all the effect when it is not in colour.

Sandie, I am sorry to hear that you have still not sold your house.  I guess people still want to be in the cities and not the country.   Well, have a great time at the Convergence, and if you see anyone from WA, say hello to them from me…..   :o)

Dear Sandie
Congratulations on selling your sculpture.
Re Norwegian lady - it may be interesting to hear her comments and to find out what is happening in the northern hemisphere with regards to felting.
To all those who are attending the convergence - I know you will have a wonderfully creative time. I am going to Fibres West 2005 in Bunbury next week to do the Wearables Gone Wild course. Today I am gathering all my 'interesting' materials and am looking forward to my creative week away from the city.
Best wishes to everyone.

Hi all

Things here have been really quiet lately, I am sure if you are anything
like me life is just extremely busy, I have little time at present to sit
in front of my computer.

I have a lady from Norway who has requested membership of our group, what
are your thoughts?

How many of you are getting ready to attend convergence???

I am not able to attend the workshops but will be there as a stallholder
with a friend, though I am doing a workshop with Birgitte Krag Hansen later
in the month!!! Exciting stuff!

We had our Southern Highland Textile Exhibition earlier this month and I
was really pleased to have sold a couple of small things and one of my new
sculptures. It was a gynecologist in Bowral that bought the piece for her
rooms!!!!

Other than that I am busy running my business and working a couple of days
a week bookkeeping (that is due to the non sale of our house!) as well as
all the usual stuff us girls do!

Better go have a needlefelting demo day with some ladies tomorrow.

Hope you are all well and the non posting is due to lots of feltmaking!!!

Hi Julie
I will see you on Saturday but probably only for a couple of hours around lunch time. Hoping to bring my friend Vikki. Pity you can't put up your felting table - is it possible to use the dining table? I use mine all the time - a layer of towels and then set up - so far no water damage.
Vikki and I went to Canberra on frequent flyers so we could only go on certain dates which unfortunately didn't coincide with either the Convergence or Floriade - maybe next time.
best wishes

Good to hear, Rae that you had a very good visit.  It is a pity that you did not wait until the first week of Octoer, then you could have gone to the Southern Hemisphere Convergence.  I am sure some some of you girls are planning to go…….I forgot who mentioned they were going, as I have been up to my eyeballs in the proverbial…..and then back to work yesterday…..that time came all too quickly.

I hope that I will see you this Saturday at the Toss and Tell Day at Menora, Rae……then you can fill me in on all the rest of the details of your trip.

I am feeling rather stymied at present….there is no room in this tiny tiny unit for putting up my felting table, and I am getting a little tetchy about that.  To give you an idea of how small it is, I have only enough room in my sitting room/dining room/entry hall for only one recliner chair and the dining table which I could not possibly part with.  I guess if I were to part with my antique Cornish Reed Organ, then I would have a little extra room for a couch.

Well, girls, I think that it is about time for another exchange of some kind.  Any suggestions out there?

Happy felting to you all,

Julie, you'll have to think small......on the kitchen sink.......jewellery,
balls, hats, glass cases......what about felting the dining table.
Anyone interested in a commercial carder that has just come on the market.
It is an older piece of equipment, originally a cotton carder but converted
for carding wool and mohair. The price is "offers over $5,000". I would
think the business contacts come with it as the couple are retiring. Phone
enquiries can be made on 0266452083, Lindsay Tompkins. Lindsay has carded
other people's wool and mohair for quite a few years, is located at Maclean
on the North Coast. I would imagine you could make quite large batts with
it, although he mainly just did slivers.

Yes I'm off the the convergence. Who else is going?
Is anyone interested in a commercial carder. It is quite old, has worked
well for the couple who own it, they are retiring. The price is "offers
over $5,000". It is quite wide, so it would make large felt batts, although
they only used it for slivers. Lindsay Tompkins is the owner and his phone

machine as he is retiring.

Well, girls, I think that it is about time for another exchange of some kind.  Any suggestions out there?

Happy felting to you all,

Julie Williams

Well done, Julie, getting back on line so quickly - I'm sure the fact that you just had to try out your new laptop helped! Anyway great to hear that you have settled into your new temporary home.
What is this felting with hemp? Does it felt without wool tops? I will be interested to know about this.
Returned from Canberra last Friday night - had a really interesting week visiting the National 'this' and the National 'that' and of course Parliament House (new and old). Went to the Old Bus Depot Markets - if any of you are in Canberra don't miss this. It has to be the best market I have ever been too. The Management are very selective of who can rent a stall space which means they have very high quality goods and an amazing variety. Thoroughly enjoyed Canberra - although need to go back and finish off all those tourist spots and National 'places' which we didn't have time for.
I am feeling much better and now will get back into felting and completing some mosaics which I started earlier this year.
Hope all of you are well and over 'flus and colds, etc.
regards
xxxRae

Well, that was not a long break, was it?  At first I thought that I
would be off air for a lot longer, but I conceded and got the phone
put on at my new unit.

I go back to work on Monday, but in the meantime, the past fortnight
has really sped by at an alarming rate.  I have been extremely busy
unpacking some of my things, putting some back into cartons and
sealing them up, ready for storage for whilst I am away.

I really have had not the time at all to do any feltmaking, but
today, I have been intrigued by the hemp felting question, and am
going to dig out my slivers of hemp and have a go at it just on its
own.  I have only ever done it with wool before, so I will let you
know of the results.

I am sending this email from my lovely new laptop, and have not had
the time to set it up with any fancy stuff for the emails.  I am
having a problem with the transferance of all my contacts from my
other machine, so it may  be that I will ha ve to spend some time
putting them all in by hand again.  Oh, drat!!!

Off now to try out the hemp.

Happy feltmaking everyone.
