Wrote that subject heading and thought if you lot are anything like me you
will probably just trash the email!! :-)

What are you all up to??

We have been busy with end of year things, school presentations, shopping,
partying and trying to keep our home really tidy in the mean time in case
any prospective buyers want to take a look!!!!

Tonight we are putting the tree up, usually do it on Dec 1 but we were out
school presentation last night! Have to crow a little, our eldest (13) won
the Excellence award for her year in Creative arts. Have to crow as Shawna
is at the moment going through an assessment process (we are waiting
results) and has difficulty with her school work. We felt delighted for
her, that instead of being criticised for not doing her work she was
actually being given a huge pat on the back!

As for feltmaking, been busy trying to finish a couple of Santas I am
making, every year I say that I will make some felt decorations but they
just never happen well these two are almost finished!!!! And I have made a
naive nativity! Cant half tell how pleased I am with myself but if you knew
how scatty I can be you would understand why I am pleased!

Off to teach a workshop today, they are always fun and some days it is hard
to believe that this is going to work for me!!

What have all of you been up to?

Sandie

Hi Wendy
Martien Van Zuilen lives in Beaconsfield, Western Australia, as far as I am aware.  She is no longer a member of FeltWEST.  It may be that you had the wrong spelling for her name when you tried to find it.  I am sorry that I don't know of her email, or web address if she has one, but if you try to google with her name spelt the way I have done, you may be able to find something.
Good Luck

Hello all,
Welcome, Julie, and thanks for the info on Micron. As I don't have any
sheep, I buy all my fibre, mainly through our felting group, as we
have a good supply available. We have mainly  merino tops, which are
about 22micron from First Edition Fibres in Euroa. We also have a lot
of mixed fibre, mer/silk, mer/flax, mer/silk/alp. We have coloured
fleece Cor/mer batts from Bennet& Gregor in SA & merino batts from
Margaret Peel, as well as silk tops, hankies etc from TreeTops Colour
Harmonies in WA as wel as tussah tops, pencil roving, etc from Matein
Van Zuilen in Perth.

I also have a number  of coloured fleeces that I have to deal with
asap. (perendale) as well as a corriedale.

I like to do cobweb & nuno, flatfelting, as well as needlefelting.
Pre felts are such a great way to go. As I have had a lot of trouble
with my back, earlier this year, I'm using batts more for large
pieces of solid felt. (being a large person, this is often necessary
for me.) I am always interested in new suppliers of batts, especially
in natural colours, as I like to dye my own at times. It's great
thatt there might be a new supplier coming up from one of us:))

Julie, what a mammoth task rolling that large piece of batting, do
you need to use it all for your quilt? I have intentions, also of
doing a felt quilt, having had similar ideas to you as how to go
about it.

I've been busy with everything else than felting, lately, but you
have inspired me, I think, if I move myself, I just have enough time
to do one for my sister's wedding in January. Where did you get the
batting meterage? was it the commercial needle felt batting available
in Quilt shops? or the batting available from the net?
regards, Barb?

Thanks Sandie for putting my photo up on the album and creating the folder.  If I cannot find out how to add to it, I will let you know.
Tomorrow at Craft House in Menora (WA), we are having a Trash and Treasure sale.  Each of us has a table, and we will be able to buy bits and pieces from each other.. Its a good opportunity to make some space within the storage.  I have a few fleeces and some homespun that I don't think that I will ever get to use up.  Also bits of fabric and offcuts of felt that someone else may find useful.
Enjoy the weekend

Sorry, Wendy,
Late night typo. It's vanzum01@... (Martein Van Zuilen, who was the founder of the Victorian Feltmakers- before my time)
Martein's address is 129 Alma rd, North Perth WA. tel 08 92270609

I've worked 5 of the last 6 days, very hectic & unpaid o'time writing reports, so haven't had time to check my emails for a couple of days,+my computer, printer & IT connection has been playing up lately, & I can't get to the bottom of it. I'm fed up with being kicked off all the time. It' s probably because the computer is a clone, so has something incompatible in there. Maybe I'll have to change the email from Outlook express to Eudora.

Hope you have more success getting through, this time.

Hi Julie

Have created an album for you and loaded your picture, had to lighten it on
my computer to get a better look at it, hope it is okay!

Kerry, love your hat!!!

Natalie, Cute bunny, love the colour!!!!

Was going to hassle you all and say come on some more pictures please, then
I realised I hadn't loaded one myself!!!

Couldn't decide what my favourite piece is as my favourite tends to become
the piece that I am working on. When I have finished and start another
piece then that becomes my favourite!!!

I guess my favourite at the moment would be an alpaca I made for the Alpaca
Nationals but unfortunately I haven't taken a pic of hime yet and I need to
download my camera so I can. Instead I put up my vest The Forest Whispers.
Might take that down when I get the alpaca up!!

Cheers

Sandie :-)

Thank you Allison.  I really enjoyed making it too.  I have a "thing" for Dragonflies, even to the point of getting a tattoo of one on my ankle, so I can't deny it now.

Sandie.....I wonder if you could upload that picture of mine  for me to the Yahoo photo album.  I can't seem to work out how to do it.  I have tried, but nothing I do seems to work.  Ta Muchly in anticipation.

Hi Natalie
Geelong Fibre Forum 2005 will be held on Sept 25th to Oct 1st.  Early enrolments are encouraged as it is so popular, they will hold a ballot on 10th December this year, so it does not leave it much time for you to book.  A booking fee of $100 is required,   Get your application from www.tafta.com.au  or you can send to PO Box 38, The Gap, Queensland 4061.  For people that are subscribers of the Textile Magazine, there is an application form within the pages.  Cost of the workshops if residential is $280 and Non Dormitory Accommodation at Geelong Grammar for 6 night and days meals included is $490.  I had better get my butt into gear and do my application.
Needle felting is also a passion, in fact the lady that I did was needlefelted.  I was pretty inexperienced when I did her, and did not know enough about mixing flesh colour for her skin, so left it white.  I always wanted to do a figure sitting on a chair.

Cheers

Hi all,
Thanks Kerry for that information.

Julie, when is the Geelong fibre forum? is there a website?
I have to date only ever/do go to the sheep an wool show at Bendigo.
Canberra is out of the budget I think.lol
I have some flax here that I think is fun to mix but as yet no hemp/ did smoke it when a young person...lol shh, don't tell anyone.!
Now lady,s I am only joking here, I have not smoked anything for the last 15 years - before I had my own children.
I too enjoy nuno felt Julie but have just found needle felt and it does not look to good when there is a cotton layer.

I noted that Barb buys from shops not farms, I do know both m.peel an f.edition and while I really like some of the fibres, I found  (I feel they are high) it brought the over all cost up on the end item.

I have posted a few days ago in the photo nemcala file one of my rabbits in 100% alpaca - I sell this type of fellow for $50 - $60.00 A.U .
with some persons feeling its to high a price.
If I was to buy ready made fibres I would have to charge more.
How do you all came to a fee?
thanks for all in put.

Hello Barb
In reply to your question as to where I got my meterage of batting, it was from Lorraine McArthur, here in Western Australia.  She sent all of her coloured wool away about almost 6 years ago, and had it scoured, and batted.(is that the right terminology?  Not Battered, anyway).  She got it back in lots of lovely WIDE batts and I talked her into selling me 8 metres of it, as I worked out that is what I would need for the job, allowing for shrinkage, and it has to reach the floor over a pretty high bed.  Anyway, Lorraine is in Busselton.  I also use the merino from Euroa, I bought a great stack of it from their catalogue, then I get odd bits and pieces from Helen O'Neill.  I also like the wool (fine) from Christine Sloan from Gerringgong, NSW, I got some from her at the Caloundra Convergence.

Keep up the felting
Cheers

Hi Wendy
Glad to see that you are being resourceful....although I find that I like the way my little Ozito sander felts.  It does it just at the right speed.  I generally place it on the felt, then leave it in one spot until I have counted to 10...yes, I now know how...and then move on to the next spot.  Sometimes, we want things to felt slowly, especially if you have a polyester fabric that the wool has to migrate through.
I don't have any netting over the wool when I am doing this, nor do I have plastic over my rubber on the sander.

Take care, all

I cut up a thin rubber suction bath mat that has ridges on it to fit the sander (used the clips that usually hold the sandpaper to keep it in place). The combination of the movement of the sander plus the ridges on the mat felts the wool very fast.

Just took a look at my sander. It has holes in the bottom but I don't find it is a problem. I make sure my felt is not too wet, sponge it with a dry towel before starting and taking all other safety precautions. Rubber soles etc. I did find that putting plastic on the bottom slow the felting down a lot. Works better with the bare plate.

Hi Wendy

If you only want small quantities my ladies in my spinning group may be
interested. I could ask them to bundle up the balls and maybe I can make
arrangements to catch up with you and see if any of them are suitable. We
often have single balls left over from projects.

HI Natalie,
Use the train, it's easy. There are trams that come right up to the end of the street(#48 from Spencer st station & #24 from Latrobe at Spencer)
I'm trying to find if any members from up your way who are coming down & maybe you could meet up. You could also drive to the outskirts & train/ tram it. If you could drive to Keilor East, which is just off the Calder, before the Tulla Junction, we have a lovely member there who I'm sure will be able to bring you the rest of the way. I can contact her if you like. I'm pushy, aren't I ? Not really, I'd just love to see you there.

btw, I use mainly processed fibre as I don't have time to process it myself. I also don't have a large database of growers, though we do have a list available through the feltmakers, so if you have any more addresses, let me know.

I have only one big problem-I hate other cars! so I may need something for the nerves. lol (why else would one live in the middle of no where?)
No , it sound like good day.

As for the best thing felted???
well I normally like most, other wise it is deaded!! but I do really like the bunny in file, it was made for a 21st with the daughters colours that she really liked.
I had also done a bear that went to England for a naming day for a little girl.
I don't know too many, maybe  if I ever get it done- a wedding dress in nuno silk organza bodice with silk needle felted flowers and white suri skirt.
all the best

----- Good luck, Jacqui, you won't have a problem, as they are all double insulated, the motor is completely separate from thebase. Also, just get a cheap 1/3 sheet sander, as yo don't want the most powerful one on the market, it only has to agitate the fibres.

wear rubber sole shoes, or stand on a rubber mat. use a safety switch on your extension cord & you're safe :))

mop up excess water first (car sponge is great for this) . you need very little water, really.
good luck, Barb Mewburn.

Hi Kerry
I love your hat especially the felt flowers. I make and sell at lot of hats. What do you use to shape you hats? I use "Hatshapers". I guess, at that moment that is my favourite thing to make in felt. I needle felt the shape first getting it nice and even with no hole or thin spots then wet felt them over a shape.

Hi all,
Thanks Kerry for that information.

How do you all came to a fee?
thanks for all in put.

hi everyone,
Thank you Julie for your answer in regard to micron count.
As it turns out you were the only person to do so.
As I got into all fibre things to help me promote alpacas - it has grown from there, I was very concerned about others selling course alpaca as fine, when it was not so and then have folks pay huge sums of money for product, only to be disappointed and then never wanting to buy it again!
As I am selling to someone, I am always interested in what the person wearing/paying for the item thinks/wants.
And my love of the alpaca.
I have to add, having spent the last couple of days playing with merino cross and Corriedale, I have found it felts much faster and gives a smoother finish.
so for this summers work I have added about 10 % sheep to my 85% alpaca and the rest silk/mohair, so will be most interested in how it turns out.lol
have a good one

Hi Allison,
the party sounds great:))
I haven't felted a hat over a ball, but it shouldn't be too hard, I guess, I just checked my felting books & found a section on felting a beret on a ball in Joan Fisher's Exploring Felting.( a great Aussie book.) If you haven't got it, then I'd be happy to send you a synopsis of the article.

regards, Barb

Thanks Sandie,
Birthday went brilliantly. The film I put together seemed to be the key. Early in the evening we crammed 40 odd people into a lounge room. They were relaxed sitting down on the floor and none were drunk . Showed it to them (25 minutes). The response was amazing. Just seeing him as a cheeky little babe, plus as a 7year old pointing to his first lost tooth, saying he wanted to be a toyman when he grew up, all the dinky shows he was in as he grew up -plus the cracked little voice of a 13 year old playing and singing "Stairway to Heaven" as the soundtrack under 5 minutes of photo highlights -seemed to be very moving. I then struck out against tradition and asked people to say speeches there and then. People spoke from the heart, I opened the floor to who ever wanted to say something and even Adams X-teacher spoke, Adam answered each from the heart. It was the intense celebration that I have only ever experienced at a wake. -but here were people saying how much they loved and admired the person -to his live face. Then two talented sisters got up and sang to "I feel the earth move under my feet" with every verse ending in them pointing to him and gesturing  -"I want your baby" grind grind. It bought the house down. The lights went up and the rest of the party and thumpy music prevailed. . Didn't over cater too much, no gatecrashers no vomiting. A great warm and sweet night. Thank you for asking.

I am teaching advanced individual felting projects next Sunday. I can teach -my challenge is to DO !!

I have a question though. Has anyone ever made a hat on a ball or a bucket as they are used to talk about a few years ago on the feltmakers group?
Allison

Allison

Hope your sons birthday bash went well. What sort of felting workshop were
you teaching?

Jan

Sounds like you are up to lots of great things, though you can have taking
the dog to the vet!!! I have two chairs on my back patio that are awaiting
felt to be recovered!!! Did you get your merino dyed???

Natalie

Sorry to hear you didn't get your answer about micron either from this or
the feltmakers list, did see your post on feltmakers and would have been
interested in the answer but I guess I shall have to wait. Let me know if
you ever find out!

I am off to a spinners & weavers group tomorrow down Wollongong way for a
demo! I often do these and they are lots of fun, sometimes I get more work
out of them (ie workshops!) other times they are just a lot of fun!

Already have workshop bookings coming in for next year which is great as I
don't know if I told you all but I was made redundant Christmas last year.
I had been managing a Community college for 6 years and the college closed.
Hubby said to me I should concentrate on my business a bit harder (I had
been doing workshops but only about 6 a year!) and give it 12 months, if I
get enough work then so be it if I don't then I need to find a job that
will at least pay me some money. Well the year is almost up and we are
booked up to about April next year so it looks like I can keep playing in
the felt!!! :-)

This week I have to create some new workshop ideas for next year and I love
that as I get to play!!!!!

Better go. we have been away down the coast for the weekend and
unfortunately if I want play this week I have to go deal with the pile of
washing that is breeding in the laundry!!

Have a great week all

Regards

Sandie :-)

Have you found a hole-free model, or do you just wrap it up in

Dear Jacqui
Big W sells "GMC" brand sanders. I picked mine up for less than
$30. It is much better than the $20 ones around.

Hi All,

Barb - I have just joined the Victorian feltmakers and hope to make it to my first meeting next month.  Is it okay to bring a friend who is not a member?  I am really looking forward to meeting some other felt lovers.

Julie - the story of your quilt is an amazing one.  I hope one day we to see a picture of the finished item!

Allison - I have never made a hat so I am no help at all!!

Sandy - On the question of favourite felted item, as I'm still so new to felting, there aren't that many pieces to choose from!!  However, the favourite would definitely be a wall-hanging I (and others) made for my sister-in-law who turned 50 this year.  Her two daughters, my four girls, and another cousin - all aged between 4 and 14 - worked together to create a garden scene with butterflies, bugs and flowers.  We used merino tops, silk, alpaca, and some odd bits of fancy yarns.  The result was good and the kids were really pleased with themselves.  My sister-in-law loves it - she says she touches and looks at it every day.  If I can figure out how to do it, I will post a photo.

Jacqui
