Good morning everyone. Looks like rain today. Which is good, shed will remain cool and I can get more batts made.
Stacey, the whole of my studio looks like your desk, and it is stifling,I have to do a major clean before I can get back to creating. Also have Hugh collection of bits and pieces . Did a miner clean out of some fibers, took them to the shop and sold a lot of them, now they can live in someone else's cupboard. Can't allow the shed to get that way and clean it each night ready for the next days production.
I was to take the Alexander Pilin class at Orange but had to cancel as daughter is expecting her first baby on Easter Monday and first babies like to come late.

Hello all

Thanks for the welcome. I’ll introduce myself. I have been into feltmaking about a year and a half. Resisted it a long time because I needed another art/craft interest like I needed a hole in my head . . . but I took a class with Robyn Steel-Stickland, a great teacher who just happens to be my best friend, and the felting bug bit me. I studied with Beth and Larry Beede at Horsham Textile Fibre Forum last year and will do Alexander Pilkin’s class there this coming April. A couple of weeks ago I had three days with Polly Stirling, teaching in Melbourne for Victorian Feltmakers. This was my introduction to Nuno and I loved it. Have been dropping into every op shop I go past to scrounge for silk scarves! Then I spent about 50 dollars at a fabric store a couple of days ago . . .

Anyway, you can read about my Polly Stirling experience and see a few pictures at my blog: www.studioastarte.com.au/blog

I am fortunate to work in the craft industry, though in papercrafts, not textiles. I manufacture my own line of rubber stamps. I also run papercraft expos in Sydney and Melbourne under the name “Paperific”. I have a husband (46), a son (nearly 13) and a dog (4).

Looking forward to being part of this list, particularly as my involvement in feltmaking is really starting to take-off.

-Stacey Apeitos

(Oakleigh South, Melbourne)

PS Don’t know if this has been mentioned to the list already but there is an exhibition of textile arts to 11 March on at Manningham Gallery www.geocities.com/selvedges which includes work by Feltmaker Ruth Benjamin. Haven’t seen it yet myself.

Also coming up, Felt by Elizabeth Armstrong, 11-31 March at Lumina Gallery, 89 Waverley Rd, E Malvern 10am to 5pm Tues-Sun.

Hi Sandie. I am making extra of the strong batts so should have some to take with me to Crookweel. As well as the 22 micron I will have the Merino Cross, 17.5 Micron hand dyed as well as some of the 18.5 "Nuance " made into batts.
Also, coming event is The Gold Country Muster on May 27th at West Wyalong High School Hall. A group of us are going from Bathurst and making a weekend of it. Among other things the students of the high school will give a goat handling display and will have some mohair for sale.
A contact for more info is teggsy@... The Bland Spinners and weavers are putting it on.

Hi all

As Pat and I had been talking about Crookwell, I thought I probably should
let you all know about this and a couple of other things that are on this
year! Please if there is something happening in your area, let us all you
know you never know who might be travelling through!
Sandie :-)

11 March
Crookwell Big Weekend (Which is actually only one day!) is on Sat 11 March
The main street of Crookwell is closed and there are lots of stalls and
stuff happening. In conjunction with this Megan Cleland runs a Fibre Day in
the Memorial hall, there are fleeces and various fibre related stuff for sale.

22 April
Robertson Wool Festival (Yes I know its the same weekend as Orange!!) run
by the Black and Coloured Sheep Breeders association. Its held in the
School of Arts Building. We have Barbara Lloyd (The Oddball Lady), Magnolia
Books, Kangaroo Valley Spinning Supplies, Second Hand Craft book Dealer,
Julie Hofer from Petlyn (Hand carders, pickers etc) A knitting competition,
creative garment competition as well as raw fleeces for sale!

10 June
Back to Back Wool challenge at Tocal Homestead. Wool, shorn from the sheep,
then spun and knitted into a jumper...all in one day and against the clock!
This event is part of the annual international competition to promote wool
and raise money for cancer research. Crafts will be on sale, there are
hands-on activities for all ages and delicious homemade refreshments are
available all day. The blacksmith and vintage machinery will be working at
Homestead site (usual entry fee to the Homestead applies). The homestead is
about 12.5km out of Maitland.

July 1
Berry Spinners and Weavers are holding a fibre muster. There will be
workshops, demonstrations and lots to buy!

Crookwell? It is a lovely day and we have a great time this is our third
year there and we make a weekend of it and stay in the caravan park, Megan
had mentioned you would be there!!

The workshop at the school sounds great, let us all know when the display
is on, dont know if I can make it or not but would love to see the display!

Dont work too hard!!! and have a great weekend!

Welcome Stacey, sure you welcome enjoy the group.
What is everyone doing these days. I have a thousand ideas floating around my head but I an afraid I am chained to the shed for the next couple of weeks. Have request for "stronger" wool for those doing Alex Pilin classes so I am making 29.5 micron merino batts in plain colours like black , dark brown, rust, deep green etc. Feels very harsh after working with the 17.5 stuff, butt love the way it takes colour.
Well be teaching a felt workshop at the end of March at Hampton School, a small school with 17 pupils. It's a special program where artist are sent to small schools in the country, then the work is put on display in a bigger region, this year it will  in Bathurst at the Entertainment Centre .
Sandie, hope to see you at Crookwell in a couple of weeks.

Dear Barb

Your email brings back my memories of my trip to England a few years ago.  My ancestors ran a pub at Silkstone (I love that word), don't think there is any sign of the pub these days, but I did stay with some relos at Pennistone in Yorkshire and I just loved it.  I loved the church which was in the middle of the old town, with all the old, old graves with the very old style of writing.   Ah, have a great time.

Hello, everyone,
I've been up to none felting things lately. Work has been on the agenda
a lot, also. (Nursing, doing extra shifts). Since our daughter left for
her backpacking trip to South America (with her fiance), we've been
re-arranging our home again, to fit put away all of their extra stuff
that wouldn't fit in the shed.

I've also been online a lot, doing research before our trip to the UK
later this year, for 6 1/2 weeks, leaving on 1st September. Not long, I
know, but arranging transport and accommodation over there at the most
reasonable price has taken a lot of time. We have decided to hire a 6
berth motor home for the middle 4 weeks, as this will be the time when
we do most of the site-seeing throughout the UK. Some of the time our
daughters will probably spend with us too. (not necessarily together) .
My family over there doesn't have room to put us up, so we have to be
independant. As we are on a very tight budget, hotels & B&B's are out of
the question, except maybe 1or 2 nights. the last few days, we will tour
around London, using public transport. We'll travel around Cornwall,
Devon & Somerset in the first week, with the girls. After the "Do" on
9th September (which is why we are going), we'll travel straight to
Scotland, picking up the motorhome on the way.

I have been lucky to hear from my best friend from primary school,
after 42 years! She now lives in Scotland. We found each other through
Friends Reunited. I lodged my details in 2000, looking for her. She
registered in Dec 2005 & found me! I can't tell you all how amazed &
happy I am to be able to communicate with her after all this time.
Amazingly, we still have many things in common.

I have a couple of other acquaintances to see in Scotland, too. It will
be great to see somewhere that I've never been.
We want to look at a lot of the rural areas in the UK, especially little
villages. We aren't going to spend a lot of time in the cities, if we
can avoid it.

I have distant family in Wales, also, Wales is such a beautiful holiday.
As I was born & lived in Birmingham, ( in the midlands of England, the
2nd largest city in the UK, Wales was a place where we usually had a
holiday, as it was very close.
We will travel down the East /South East of England, before taking the
motorhome back , seeing my family in Birmingham, then spending more time
with our daughter & son/law before doing the 'London thing' & travelling
home. We'll be back in Australia on 19th October. Back to work a few
days later. Our dear little dog goes for a holiday to Steve's cousin,
who adores her :-)

I am hoping to be able to get in contact with felters in the UK, before
we go, as it would be lovely to meet up with some, whilst we are over
there. I would really like to see what they are up to.

I managed to hurt my back again on Thursday, just leaning into the car
to get my bag out. It just goes to show, I can't try to work too many
days together, having just come off 7 out of 8 days at work.

It has been frustrating, as I couldn't go to our Vic Felt meeting,
yesterday. I haven't been able to do the washing, water the garden,
shopping, etc, but am able to sit on this great chair & write on my
ergonomic keyboard. Getting up is amusing, have to "push up" from the
table. It is a real challenge when sitting on my favourite recliner arm
chair, which i tend to do, forgetting the difficulty arising from it
later. massage has helped, as will the visit to the Chiro. tomorrow,
no doubt. I've still managed to get some ironing done, though, as I can
stand & do that. It's important to keep moving, so that we don't 'lock
up' too much. I'm looking forward to being able to lay out some felt,
once my back settles down & now that my computer research is coming to
an end. (It all had to be done & booked in time to get the better deals).

Julie, I can only imagine the 'fun' you have had getting ready for your
big trip. I do hope that you have a fantastic time in the States, Japan
& India. What a diverse experience you will have, I'm sure. (Being an
armchair traveller, I am going on other people's experience). Happy,
healthy & safe journies to you.

regards, Barb Mewburn

Hi again Meg
Toss n Tell is FeltWest's regular monthly meet where everyone comes along and felts all day at Craft House and at lunch time we have a show n tell to see what everyone has done at workshops or just anything of interest - altho must admit I mostly only go for a couple of hours over lunch time as I don't seem to get much felting done more like a lot of talking. It is a fun day.
Thanks for the info on Siminay.
I will email Jenny this weekend - hopefully!
take care

Hello Felters,
Giving away my identity Julie! You would think after all this time(47 years) I would be a
Aussie. Not so red these days. Some one at the spinners group thought I had gone
blonde.Very diplomatic!1 Mind you they say strange things about blondes!  Lets change
the subject.  I try to get away from the autumn colours but I do love them .
Siminay ,you asked about it Rae .It is pineapple fibre .Comes in a few colours. Spotlight
might have it. Looks like a net type of fabric. Soft and pliable that you can shape. My hat is
a"cocktail" hat-- lol. Annie and Satin would be most welcome if you can make it.What is
Toss and Tell?  Your collaborate piece sounds  interesting. Good luck with the exhibition.
I am going to do a little felting  workshop on Monday with three friends. We have formed a
little group to demonstrate our particular passion ,craft wise of course. We have all
dabbled in crafty things but we think we could stretch our selves a bit. Good excuse to
have fun!!!!
Saw Jenny 2 weeks ago Rae.She is well. My best to you Julie.  What's happening in the felt

Hi Aussie Feltmakers,

Yes, Meg……I always figured that you would be the autumn tonings.  It is your own colouring that gives it away……now everyone will know that you are a Scottish redhead!.

My own colours that I work with are always leaning towards the rich pinks to burgundy shades, along with the pink tonings of purple, such as plum colours.  I also work a lot with black.  I remember thinking that Wendy was extremely lucky to have gotten her fibre  back in the form of the scarf when we did the scarf exchange, because I just loved the colour so much.  The greens that Pat had to work with from me was my grand daughter’s choice, as the scarf was for her.  I am forever conscious that I must not do everything in the same colour scheme, so I do tend to grin and bear it when I make something a different colour.

I have often tried to deviate from those colours…..I am not a blue person….but I did deliberately make a blue handbag after the fibre exchange…..strangely I was sent mostly shades of blue in that package, only one parcel of the 50 gram parcels being  golds and orangey dyed curly fibre.  But mostly I would say that all my colours that I use are the richer tonings.  I rarely do anything in pastels.

Hi Meg
You write how you speak - I can hear your voice!!! Pity about the Scotch Mist could have been quite warming!
Just getting into a collaborative piece (mostly felt) with a friend for an art exhibition at Perth College.
Also deep into family tree 'stuff' with my cousin - very interesting but time consuming.
Hopefully will be doing a weekend workshop in May at UWA 'Restoring and Enhancing Photographs with your computer'.
I have lost your home email address but will look on the Fibre Forum list, when I can find that!!!
I'm going to Toss n Tell tomorrow as it is Julie's last felting day before she goes away. Lucky lady - sounds like a fantastic trip.
Have you seen Jenny recently? I must send her a message - had all good intentions of doing that as soon as we came back from the Forum, but ...................
Annie's doing fine and so is Satin. Might bring them down your way for a visit later this year. Love to catch up.
lots of love

Hello to all,
Welcome to our new member.  Have not been felting but intend to tidy up the shed  so

Scotch Mist. Rainy kind not the one you drink . :)  Julie it sounds all go.We look forward to

The Siminay demo was interesting but judging by my husbands reaction to my "hat" I don't
think it will catch on with me!!!  Lorraine Macarthur had some beautiful examples that she
had made. Straw hats  remoddeled and other ideas very clever.
I have just bought some beautiful long staple white merino fleece to spin.Felting may have
to be put on hold.
I am grappling with digital pictures and will try to get   one to show off on the web site.
How are you Rae?
Colours ? Give me autumn tones any time.  My best to you all Meg in Augusta where two

So sorry guys, for not being very active and chatty.  I have been madly busy organizing things like injections, tickets, visas, travel insurance, International driving permits, packing boxes, storage places, packing up the boxes for putting into that storage, and madly trying the Sunday markets to get rid of a few things surplus to my needs and room in the packing boxes.  At work, it has been also very busy, trying to organize a replacement for my job….my boss told me that if I must leave, then I had to do the advertising, read all the resumes and do all the interviews as well.  So……I have not had the time to do any felting.  I will, however, be going to the monthly meeting of FeltWEST, which is this Saturday.  It will be my final one for a year or more, so I don’t want to miss it.  I was hoping to be able to get down to Bunbury to share their company before tripping off, but I find that a Friday, which is the day they meet, is impossible for me to get to.  I am very sad about that, and will miss seeing all my old friends from down there, including our friend from Augusta, Meg.  I am pleased to be catching up with Rae though in Perth.

I have also been trying madly to sell my car, but no takers so far.  I may have to leave it in the hands of my parents when I go, and have them transfer the money to me after I have gone.

I have also been organizing workshops to do in USA, and I am so far, teaching in Portland, Oregon, San Diego in California, Houston in Texas, and I will be actually doing a workshop that will have Ewa Kuniczak and Birgitee Krag Hansen teaching, in Rensslaeville, in New York State come July this year.  I am still hoping to organize a couple more workshops, one in Arizona and one in Missouri and one in North Carolina.  One of the ladies in Oregon suggested that I could have a workshop up in BC, which I could easily do since I will be almost there.  I will be up in Portland in April, and my next workshop will not be until late May, then in the second week of June.  After that June one, I will have a break in Florida, meeting up with my cousins for the first time.  We have always been in touch, and it is lovely to be able to be finally meeting up with them at long last.

We are having very hot weather here in Perth at present…..at least I think it is very hot.  Makes one feel like just dying in front of the airconditioner, or fan, especially after getting home from work after being in the hot car in the traffic on the way home.

A very big WELCOME  to all of our newest members.  I hope that you all find it very beneficial to be a part of this very friendly list.  Also that you learn as much as the knowledge that you care to impart.

Happy felting everyone.

Julie

The colours we tend to move toward has always fascinated me. When I first started working in fibre I remember setting up a display and when I finished my friend leant over and said "My you do like blue and green don't you?". Nearly every piece on display was in some shade of blue or green, very stunning but I realised very limiting.

That was quite a few years ago and from that point on I made myself work outside my colour comfort zone, often deliberately making pieces in colours that I didn't like and also wearing clothes in colours outside what I would normally choose. It was a growth experience and while those pieces of clothing are not my favourite pieces, I now don't mind them, although some colours I wont wear because they look dreadful on me! :-)

The issue of colour has smacked me in the face again only recently on moving to our new house. Inside the house is painted in very modern colours and looks great, very contemporary. Everyone who has seen it likes it either for the colours or the fact that it is so bold. I did too until living in the house for over a month I now find the colours make my skin crawl. We are slowly working our way through repainting the house in lovely soft green (our last house was blue so I thought I needed a change!) with a couple of feature walls. I am more sensitive to colour than hubby and he thought the house was fine (it had me in tears I felt so depressed!) but being the darling man he is he went out bought the paint and has been painting every night since. Last night he said he couldn't believe how different the hallway felt after we had repainted it!!! He was amazed!

So do tell, how does colour affect you (if at all), and are there any colours you tend to gravitate toward?

Mine as I have already said are blues and greens and also purples!

Just Curious!!!!

Oooooh Julie, how exciting it must be!!!!!!

At this point in my life could not even imagine doing what you are doing at
the moment but it will be lovely to enjoy hearing about all your
adventures, make sure you keep emailing us while away!

Don't envy the employing someone though, been there done that and it is a
job I really don't like, very time consuming and there is always someone
you have to disappoint. Hope it all works out quickly and easily for you!

Make sure you send us some pics of your scarf and bag before you go and
don't forget pics from the trip too, I think we will have to set up an
album just for your trip!

Way to go girl!!!

Take care
Sandie :-)

dear Julie,
How wonderful all your plans sound. It is so easy NOT to do such things with our life. I am impressed with your inspiring, gathering and tourist part of the trip, but even more so with the sound of the second. What wonderful fruit for all the felting art you will be seeing.
I heard yesterday -"self development for world development" sounds like you will be a living example!

Hello Fellow Feltmakers

Glad you enjoyed your time at Molloy Island, Meg, and please do say Hello to everyone at Bunbury Feltmakers.  I wish I could take the time off to come down again, but I have been treading a fine line there as far as that goes.  I have given my notice at work, and I took the day of after Australia Day last week, because my grandson was up for the weekend.  I also had the morning off today to go for an interview at the US Consulate for my visa.  Next week, I have to do Interviews and such like for a replacement for whoever takes my job, as the boss has said that I have to do it, if I must leave.  So that meant every thing to writing the Job Description, writing and placing the Advert on Seek.com and all the rest of that worry.  Then I will have to have more time for an interview with the Indian Consulate when the time comes……I really do not think that he relishes the idea of having someone new in the office, especially since he will be retiring this year, and I will only have one week to train someone up.

I have also been busy going into the Travel Clinic getting all sorts of injections for the India part of my trip.  I never knew there were so many diseases in the world.

But on a lighter note, I am really excited about going.  I have organized a few workshops in the States, and some with me learning as well.  Because I missed out on the Geelong Fibre Forum and Ewa’s class, I will be doing a workshop with her and Birgitte Krag Hansen, in Rensslaeville, New York State, in July.  I can’t wait for that one.  I am also going to be staying with Pat Spark in Oregon, meeting up with Loyce Ericson there too, and calling in on Sally Hall in Arizona, Jill Gully in Texas, Marie Spaulding and Barbara Kyle, before going over to Florida, up to Georgia, South Carolina, where  I will be meeting with Chad Alice Hagen, up to Missouri to view Suzanne Pufpaff’s Fibre Mill.  And there are a lot more Feltmakers that I plan to come across in my travels as well.  Then after 6 months in America, it will be good to leave and see an entire different lifestyle when I go to India.  I am doing voluntary work there, also hoping to teach some of the women in the village, Feltmaking.  Satisfaction guaranteed!!!

A couple of UFOs to complete before I go, including my Mille Flores scarf and a handbag that I started ages ago and still want to line and put a catch and handle on.  Not starting any more before I go, though, because I am too busy sorting out what wool I will be taking with me.  Got some space bags to put it all in so that I can fit lots in.  Also have to take some completed items so that I can “show and tell” and perhaps sell.

Happy felting people
