The Rhythm Hunters
Featuring Rendra Freestone & The Sumatralia Project
8.00 p.m. Friday 22 September 2006
First Sydney gig since sold out concert in June 2005!
Inspired by Japanese Taiko and remote music from West Sumatra,
Indonesia. The Rhythm Hunters
fuse the thunder of taiko drumming with indigenous Islamic music from
West Sumatra. Expect to see
taiko, frame drums, kettle gongs, bamboo flutes, didgeridoo, log
drums and West Sumatran folk songs
woven into a dramatic visual spectacle. Performers include Rendra
Freestone, Ron Reeves (drums),
Ian Hakker (didge), Allan Barclay (bagpipes) and Sari Bennett
(martial dance). Indonesia, Japan,
Australia and Scotland ... it's thick!
There will also be traditional song openings paying respect to the
audience and venue, as is the
way with this music.
Escape to long echoes in hidden valleys, primal ceremony and the beat
of a lone drum. Rendra Freestone
is raising the profile of his Sumatran heritage this dramatic visual
spectacle of song, gongs, flutes and big spirit.
'There is energy, rhythm, tightness, flair and a love of traditions
marking
them as a unique group deserving recognition in Australian music.'
'I see The Rhythm Hunters becoming a force in World music and
indigenous Music genres. Their seemingly esoteric music is made easy to
enjoy and experience.'
