Deloris return to the stage this friday 30th after a winter spent
recording, poaching, teaching and sleeping. that is to say, this
friday marks the introduction of a swag of brand new songs to the
Deloris quiver, and thus the attractive new silhouettes of those
needed to perform them. goddamn.

we play at The Tote in Melbourne as the main support to wonderful
locals/berliners 'the devastations' for their cd launch. we're on at
the 'can't drive now' hour of 10.45. preceeding us are HTRK and penny

Two Melbourne acts exploring the tonal possibilities of the humble
guitar, Winterville and North Atlantic, make their way to Sydney this
weekend.

NORTH ATLANTIC's music traverses the open spaces of land & sea using
organic solo instrumentation, dream-like drones & computer generated
noise.

Motifs of clanging baritone guitar and shimmering double bass take
forfront in this avant-rock group WINTERVILLE, heading into openly
haunting melodic themes reminiscent of a minimal Morricone while
falling
into field recordings and feedback.

Both bands are playing at Yvonne Ruve on Friday 23 September @ Yvonne

Taken from the upcoming album of the same name, this will be an

Presented by one of the most uncompromising musical outfits in the
country, The Perimeter Motor Show will feature performances by the

words by Joseph Pearson, and sundry filmic, animated and theatrical

Hello Fellow Forum Members

I am new to the industry, although I have been singing for many many years,
at professional level standards. I took out my first EMI Single in East
Pakistan {now Bangladesh} in 1970, but in Adelaide, where I have been living
since 1972, I have had another full time career for a living, until
December, last year, so I have not done or learnt much about establishing a
Career in music. I was featured at WOMADelaide this year, where I released
my contemporary double-CD album, "Mystical Melodies", which has been getting
airtime on different ABC/RN programmes. I have been applying to different
Festivals since WOMADelaide, and waiting for their decisions (I have been
successful in one so far), and am slowly contacting Music Centres and others
who advertise some Events. However, all this is very time consuming, and I
have very little time left to practise and expand my Art. I also lack
knowledge of other Organizations which must put on Events in Adelaide, and
interstate. So, I would like to enlist the help of some Agents (for a fee,
of course), with an interest in and contacts World Music and contacts for
Events Organizers. Please visit my website (www.akhterjahan.net) to find out
about me and my music. My Cultural Business Plan includes more than you will
find information about on my website, but I can send a copy of the plan to
anyone who is interested.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely

Akhter

The Rhythm Hunters
Contemporary Drumming Ensemble

CD Launch: 'Soundscapes of a Multicultural Asian Australia'

Featuring Rendra Freestone & The Sumatralia Project

The Rhythm Hunters are an Australian world music ensemble based on the
Central Coast of NSW. Utilising the thunder of taiko (Japanese
festival drums) and traditional music from West Sumatra, Indonesia,
The Rhythm Hunters bring to the stage an inspired brand of physical
drumming. Dramatic beats are pounded out with striking visual
intensity on large Australian made wine barrel Taiko. Pacific island
wood blocks and bronze kettle gongs add a lively and colourful
dimension to the zen of taiko.

Rendra Freestone weaves Asian flute music delicately into the
thundering sound fabric to create a music of heaven and earth.

Special Guests
Acehnese Body Percussion with The Suara Indonesia Dancers led by
Alfira O=B9Sullivan and songs Canadian born folk singer Geoff
Belanger.

Proudly supported by: Asialink, Australia Council for the Arts,
Australia Indonesian Institute, Central Coast Brackets and Jam, Earth
Central Productions, Worldwide Printing Gosford, Indonesian Cultural
Communications and Rode Microphones.

For your information:

TAXATION RULING PERTINENT TO MUSICIANS:

The full ruling is available in PDF format from the Australian
Taxation office website http://www.ato.gov.au
To access this ruling quickly, perform a search in the "LEGAL
DATABASE" for TR 2004/D12

What this Ruling is about

1. Having regard to the distinctive nature of the arts profession,
this Ruling provides guidance on the principles to be applied in
determining whether an artist is carrying on *businessF1 as a
'professional artist' (refer to the definition of this term in
paragraph 3). This question is relevant to a number of tax law issues,
such as:

     (a)
when an amount is income according to ordinary concepts under
section 6-5 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (ITAA 1997), because
it has been earnt in the ordinary course of carrying on such a
business;

     (b)
whether a loss or outgoing has been necessarily incurred under
section 8-1 of the ITAA 1997 in carrying on a business of this type;

     (c)
whether Division 35 of the ITAA 1997 applies,F2 where losses
from a business activity are deferred and allowed as deductions in a
future year against income from the same business activity; and

     (d)
more specifically, whether the second arm of the exception
contained in subsection 35-10(4) of the ITAA 1997, concerning a
'*professional arts business', applies.

2. However, this Ruling deals only with the threshold question of when
a person carries on business as a professional artist and does not
cover in any detail these related issues. Other related issues also
not dealt with in this Ruling are:

     ·
the application of Division 70 of the ITAA 1997 to art works
(see paragraph 5), which are *trading stock within that Division; and

     ·
the application of Division 40 of the ITAA 1997 to capital
expenditure on the cost of *intellectual property, which is a
*depreciating asset within that Division.

Class of person/arrangement

3. This Ruling applies to professional artists. For the purposes of
this Ruling, professional artists are persons who carry on activities
of the type referred to in the definition of '*professional arts
business', in subsection 35-10(5), that is activities as either:

     (a)
         an 'author of a literary, dramatic, musical or artistic work';

     (b)
         a '*performing artist'; or

     (c)
         a '*production associate'.

4. This Ruling does not set out to consider the meaning of these
terms, other than to observe that the terms, '*performing artist' and
'*production associate' are defined in section 405-25, which are set
out in the Definitions section (see paragraph 98). The 'Note' to
subsection 35-10(5) states:

The expression 'author' is a technical term from copyright law. In
general, the 'author' of a musical work is its composer and the
'author' of an artistic work is the artist, sculptor or photographer
who created it.

5. In this ruling, the term 'art work(s)' is used to describe the
product or services produced as a result of activities undertaken
during the course of a '*professional arts business', as defined in
paragraph 3.

Good bedtime novel... nevertheless important!

Hi everyone,

I understand that people will want to spread the word about certain
important messages from time to time, however I ask on behalf of this
forum that we all keep posts relevant to the Australian Music
Industry.

Occassionally there will be messages slip through and I will attempt
to keep this type of thing to a minimum. Please do not be offended
by this, I am not in any way undervaluing the importance of your
message - only questioning it's relevance in this forum. Please do
not be offended if the message is dissallowed.

The rules of this forum are contained in the FILES section of the
Yahoo group site. Please familiarise yourself with these.

Happy Days

We require musicians to work in overseas hotels and cruiships. Contracts
are usually 3 to 4 months in length. We are looking for piano bar
players, pop and jazz duos and trios, and top 40 bands. There is also
specifically a demand for 4 piece bands to work within the cruiseship
market through the Bahamas, the Mediteranean, USA, South America, Canada
and Alaska. Interested musicians and groups should email a biography and
songlist (MS word)plus a current photograph (jpg) to

Hi all!
Having been a muso myself in the 60's / 70's I realise how hard it is to gain
airplay and due recognition.
If any of you have any promo material you would like aired on our community
Radio Station, please forward it to me as below.
We pride ourselves on rotating independent artists/labels from throughout the
world, but need to cover more OZ artists/bands/soloists.
We cover ALL genres of music and our increased signal can now be heard
Melbourne wide.
Please contact me for further info and if you are in the Melbourne area, call
in for an on air 'chat'.
Happy gigging!

Hello, I just became a member of this group and wanted to introduce my work.

My name is Rendra and I run a music ensemble called The Rhythm Hunters on the
Central Coast of NSW . We perform a fusion of Japanese Taiko Drumming and
Sumatran Folk Music.

Our brief is as follows -

The Rhythm Hunters perform a unique brand of full on choreographed physical
drumming, played on Australian made wine barrel Taiko. The thundering sounds of
taiko are complemented by playful Sumatran folk tunes on Asian flutes, voice,
bronze kettle gongs and an ornate family of island wood blocks.

The combination of influences from Japanese drumming, Sumatra folk music and
life in Australia has led to what can only be described as 'The Sounds of Heaven
and Earth'

The first Rhythm Hunters CD titled 'Soundscapes of a Multicultural Asian
Australia' will be launched on the 12th of March in Avoca on the Central Coast
of NSW.

Thankyou if you've got this far.

Regards, Rendra.
