MEDIA RELEASE
DEC 1 2006
Soundslikecafe and Home Grown Roots Partners with Peats Ridge
The summer festival season has now started and everyone is getting ready for the
biggest night of the year. Many Sydney-siders in recent times have become bored
from the same old New Years Eve parties which in a lot of cases have become
quite repetitive.
In order to steer away from this 'norm' the Peats Ridge Festival was created
three years ago to give punters a taste of what a real arts and music festival
should be like. Four days long, fourteen stages and 350 bands of world music,
blues roots & dub, Contemporary music, camping, swimming, horse riding and a
huge amount of festival activities all based on a eco-friendly and sustainable
model.
A small part of the awesome lineup includes The Black Seeds, Banco De Gaia, Tim
Freedman, Afro Moses with Moses O´Jah, Angus & Julia Stone, Tyrone Noonan
(George), Kid Confucius, Sarah McLeod, iOTA and the Beauty Queens, Agency Dub
Collective and Floyd Vincent and the Childbrides.
To follow on from the huge amount of success that the Home Grown Roots and
SoundsLikeCafe showcases have had this year, they will be hosting one of the
stages. With a great reputation of providing quality music from independent
artists, the HGR and SLC crew have put together a killer lineup of artists
involved with them throughout the year. The artists that have really stood out
throughout the year that should not be missed are: - The Honey Palace, Doug
Sandrini, Jude Elliot, The Patrick Carr Project, Simon Kelly, Kolliope, Jesse
Morris, Luke Koteras, Van Sereno, Itu and Emily Davis.
Tix are still available through www.moshtix.xom.au

Reminder........
'Home Grown Roots and Soundslikecafe Christmas Party'
To celebrate everyone's favourite time of the year the Home Grown Roots and
Soundslikecafe crew will be hosting special acoustic performances of some of
Sydney's most talented musicians at The Vanguard in Newtown.
The night will play host to Montana, The Honey Palace, Patrick Carr, Van Sereno
& Itu, Doug Sandrini and Lastelle. All of these musicians have their own
specific style that will bring a certain level of diverse and high quality music
to this Christmas party for all the artists from the successful Home Grown Roots
disc and many from soundslikecafe that can make it along - in fact it's the
perfect night and venue for your own Christmas bash so why not come on down and
join us!
tix available from www.moshtix.com.au
Montana is a rare beast in this new century of popular music. Perhaps the rarest
of beasts: a crisp, clear understanding of a pop song, a hold on history with
the inclusion of a guitar or two, the appropriate embrace of modern technology
and more hooks than a tackle shop.
The Honey Palace has recently released their third EP that has lead them into a
new direction. Their unplugged EP shows off a different side to The Honey Palace
showing their fans and audiences a more close up and intimate view of them. This
new release features 3 re-collaborated songs from their first two EP's along
with 4 brand new songs recorded early this year.
Patrick Carr is a Sydney-based singer/songwriter that has played many of his
songs from his new album "You And Me" everywhere from London, across Europe, to
his recent home by the beach at Bondi, and now his latest move to Balmain.
Van Sereno likes to be known as a songwriter first and foremost, a singer and
guitarist next. Strongly rooted to RnB and Jazz, Van is adamant to make music
that means something with songs that have a strong message with a catchy chorus.
Itu's musical stomping ground has included everything from small rural and
coastal towns through to college campuses and large industrial steel cities.
Against this ever-changing backdrop she has developed a unique soul-folk style
of poetry and insight through music.
Van Sereno and Itu have combined together on the odd occasion to create their
own hybrid mixture of smooth yet powerful, soulful music. Their successful
performance at The Basement mid this year combined Van's energetic stage
presence with Itu's warm and emotive vocals.
Doug Sandrini can be described as natural music; the sound honest, clear and
developed with no restraints on style, genre or expression. Doug has set about
doing what comes naturally and has played to crowds throughout Australia, from
Perth to Sydney and even as far afield as the US and South America.
Lastelle is singer / songwriter Chris Lastelle, on lead vocals, guitars and
keyboards and his band: Dave Scotland, Craig Calhoun, Scott Johnston, Mark
Williams and Robyn Loau. The songs on the album 'This Is What I Do' were
composed on the road while travelling through Greece, Turkey, Spain, the UK,
Canada, USA, & Mexico. Arriving back in Sydney, Chris quickly recorded demo's
of the songs, then assembled the band to record the album.

Hear Mouth from the South Tony Maguire talk about his upcoming
Melbourne harmonica workshop -- and play some blues -- on ABC Radio
774 at 3:30pm today.
The special beginners harmonica workshop at The Artery in Fitzroy
designed to get harmonica hopefuls playing promising-sounding licks
by the end of the session.
Maguire has been playing harmonica since the age of
five. The 'Mouth from the South' tag came when he lived and
played 'harp' in the Northern Territory.
Sponsored by Hohner, which is providing a `C' harp for each
participant, the four hour session at the Artery, Fitzroy, is called
Introduction to the Harmonica. There's a choice of either a Saturday
Nov 25 or Sunday Nov 26 workshop. Cost: $125 inc. lunch,
instruction/practice CD and the Hohner harp.
For a copy of the workshop brochure and registration form, email
Mouth from the South on tmaguire01@... or phone 0402 388742.

Subject: Fw: Home Grown Roots co presents Hawksley Workman
For Immediate Release
'HAWKSLEY WORKMAN OZ TOUR CO-PRESENTED BY HOMEGROWNROOTS'
This year we have witnessed a large amount of success through the Home Grown
Roots compilation CD that featured the track 'Smoke Baby' by Hawksley Workman.
Home Grown Roots has hosted numerous showcases at The Vanguard in Newtown, The
Sandringham Hotel and The Beach Road Hotel in Bondi.
Those who have witnessed Canadian singer-songwriter Hawksley Workman live in
action have been captivated by his intense on-stage performances. The
multi-instrumentalist first came to our attention in May 2005 by touring
alongside fellow Canadian Serena Ryder. a national support slot with our own
LIOR followed and proved such a success that we had him return for a national
tour before the year was out. The release of his first Australian album
LOVER/FIGHTER came out last October and has since seen Sydney's NOVA 969 add
'Smoke Baby' to rotation.
To kick off the Hawksley Workman tour, he will be playing with Tecoma at The
Vanguard on Wednesday the 1st of November. This will be Tecoma's first show in
Sydney this summer after recently returning from playing at the NEMO festival in
Boston and showcases in New York, Tecoma will be playing her new single 'Air to
Me' from her upcoming album.
Farryl Purkiss from South Africa will be supporting the national tour. He will
be featured on the SoundLikeCafe v14 compilation as well. Farryl has
collaborated and toured with Jack Johnson and Donovan Frakenreiter and is set to
release his debut album CHAPTER ONE in 2007.
Jude Elliot who is one of the Home Grown Roots artists will be supporting both
of them in Adelaide at the Jive on the 3rd of November.
Hawksley Workman has released 6 albums internationally, three of which are
available in Australia - LOVER/FIGHTER, (LAST NIGHT WE WERE THE) DELICIOUS
WOLVES and his latest offering, TREEFUL OF STARLING.
Tecoma released City Folk in 2005 and received the Apra PDA award and The John
Butler Seed grant.
Jude Elliot will release her debut album in 2007.

How would you like to learn the fundamentals of blues/rock harmonica
in a single session - and be jamming with a band at the end of four
hours?
That's what the organizers of Mouth from the South harp workshops
in Melbourne on the weekend of November 25-26 are offering.
The four hour workshops climax on a kind of evangelistic note as
enthusiastic participants go up the front and jam on their harps with
a full band.
"Not all of them get up, but we've found the majority do, and most of
them sound pretty damn good!" says workshop leader Tony Maguire,
aka 'Mouth from the South.'
Sydney-based Maguire earned the Mouth from the South tag when he
lived and played harp in the Northern Territory, where he can still
be heard each Saturday at the beginning of Clarry Satour's blues show
on 8KIN FM.
Sponsored by Hohner, which is providing a `C' harp for each
participant, the four hour session is called Introduction to the
Harmonica. There are two workshops at Fitzroy music venue The
Artery, the first 11:30am-3:30pm Sat Nov 25, then the second same
time on Sun 26, with 20 places per workshop.
Cost is $125 including lunch -- and participants walk away with the
Hohner harmonica plus an instruction and practice CD to hone their
new skills.
Workshop topics include:
· Trains and multi-note rhythm styles;
· Single-note blues and rock riffs;
· Playing through mikes, amps and effects units.

Hey there!
The Vanguard Show (Tues Sept 26) is fastly approaching and tickets are selling
fast!
Be sure to get in quick if you would like a table for friends and family.
This showcase features:
Jesse Morris and the Project - All original compositions from local Sydney
Aussie singer, songwriter, guitarist- Jesse Morris. They have created their own
genre mixing violin, acoustic guitars, 5 string bass, African percussion, drum
kit and four way harmonies. Jesse, Lucille, Chad & Dave- all in their 20's with
years of experience....they have combined their sounds from various groups and
backgrounds to create a unique live show.
Kolliope - Electro-folk-POP duo KOLLIOPE (Koh-LIE-oh_pee) hail from the hills
behind Byron Bay. Unfinished business in past lives assured the inevitable,
though highly unlikely coupling of two musical polarities but it was in the
cards the Tarot kind. Its true! The two actually met over a tarot reading at the
end of the last century.
Shannon Reynolds - Shannon has been performing solo and with bands for quite
some time. She has recently decided to take the plunge into recording,
songwriting and performing full time again as to her it is the only thing that
makes sense. Currently she is performing at a local cafe in Manly on a regular
basis as well as putting together a fun local funk band with her friends.
Ester Toll - Art/ music/ dance/ writing/ creating always came natural to Ester
Toll - So, her chosen career path wasn't really a choice, it just happened. It
is a cause and effect, a reaction to emotional loaded experiences in life.
Ester's music is a project about being real and about growing strong and at the
same time about never "growing up".
Liesl Karlsson - After spending most of her life overseas, Liesl recently
returned to Australia where her days first began to explore the country and its
music scene. Her songs dig deep into the unspoken with a voice that reveals raw
emotion and both strength and fragility. Liesl refers to the ambient vocals of
UK band/duo Zero 7, the emotional lyrics of singer/songwriter Damien Rice and
the mystical settings of the old folk songs from her childhood paradise Leksand
(Sweden).
Klia Zuka - Klia started writing songs from a young age. In 2004 one of her
songs was a finalist in the Australian Songwriters competition run by ASA. She
has played across Sydney and in her hometown of Adeilade. Klia is a professional
dancer and acrobat who has decided to pursue her passion for singing and
songwriting.
Tim Walker - In the past Tim has played with a country rock outfit and also
experimented with the folk genre. He describes his current music as including
elements of both with a touch of jazz every now and then. 'As a songwriter I
write across these genres, depending on what the song demands'. The Home Grown
Roots track 'Copperhead' is about the spread of European civilisation. But the
story has a sting in it - that's where the Copperhead snake comes into it.
Thanks to Nigel Lever for his mandolin work on this song. Came up a treat.
cheers
Nick

quick. 300 CD Pros and Colour Brochures, $300+gst/Track. See
www.nemoboston.com

My name is Paddy Lynch. I play guitar and fiddle and sing Irish and
folk. I live in Hudersfield in the U.K at the moment, but we will be
moving to melbourne within the next couple of months, so I thought it
would be a good idea to get talking to some of the local musicians to
try and get an idea of what the melbourne music scene is like,
particularly as regards folk and Irish. I've read there's a genre of
music called bushmusic, does this music have it's roots in
Irish/scottish?. It would be great to hear from anybody.

Songsalive! is coming to the North Coast!
Songsalive! in Los Angeles, New York, London and now
<http://www.songsalive.org/byronbay.html> Byron Bay (Australia).
Songsalive! is the worldwide, non-profit organization dedicated to
nurturing, supporting and promoting songwriters and composers. It is
run by songwriters for songwriters, with members receiving an abundance
of opportunities to perform, be heard, be supported, and be promoted
through a network of programs.
<http://www.songsalive.org/images/members/joyoung.jpg> Jo Young,
co-ordinator of the new <http://www.songsalive.org/byronbay.html> Byron
Bay chapter, discovered Songsalive! in February this year, after finding
out about the Sydney chapter's songwriting critique workshops while
surfing the net.
"When I first attended a Songsalive! workshop I had a few notebooks full
of songs I had written over the past 15 years, many of which no one had
ever heard. I wasn't doing anything with my music except singing nursery
rhymes to my son. Only a few months later I have recorded my first CD
"Angels in the Mud" which is receiving radio airplay across Australia,
had offers from two different publishers for one of my songs and reached
the semi finals of the UK songwriting competition. The opportunities
for collaboration and networking through Songsalive! have really
accelerated my music career."
Jo has just moved back to the local area from Sydney and is bringing the
Songsalive! experience to <http://www.songsalive.org/byronbay.html>
Byron Bay on Sunday 20th November at 7pm with the first song critique
workshop at The Studio @ The Buddha Bar, Byron Bay. Co-founder of
Songsalive!, Director of Operations (and Delta Goodrem's singing
teacher) Roxanne Kiely is coming to Byron Bay for the Songsalive! launch
and will also run a vocal workshop on the Sunday afternoon. Stephen
Kiely who hosts the Sydney song critique workshops, will be at the Byron
launch to get things started.
Song critique workshops are a monthly event where members can develop
collaborations, meet industry guests, showcase and workshop their music
for feedback in a professional and supportive environment. Workshops
often feature guest speakers representing all facets of the industry
from A&R, publishers, successful producers, CD production and
distribution execs and, of course, writers and composer who share their
ideas, tips & techniques on all aspects of the songwriting craft.
"At first I was really nervous about bringing my songs out of my
bedroom," says Jo Young "but the workshops were so friendly and
constructive that I could hardly wait until the next one to happen so I
could get feedback on another song. They are for everyone who writes
songs, not just for performers, so dust off that notebook and get
yourself along."

On Sunday the 23rd October there's a place on the Merri Creek where
a person can go and not be laughed at or ridiculed just because they
look different, talk funny or dance in a way that might otherwise
seem emotionally unstable. This place is CERES; a nine acre

City City, Sally Dastey, Nick Barker, Emily Ulman, Jess McAvoy and
