Hello friends, colleagues and folks of the Australian climate movement,
As you may have heard, the proposal for an open-cut coal mine at Anvil
Hill was approved in New South Wales parliament this week. This is despite:
● The incredible community opposition (both within the local region and
beyond) to the proposal
● Dwindling water resources that would be needed to supply the mine
● The possibility of it driving away billion-dollar industries that are
fed up with coal mining in the region
● The overwhelming scientific evidence that a principal factor behind
driving global climate change is burning coal.
● The 500+ people who came out just last weekend to peacefully protest
the mine at the Anvil Hill site (see:
http://www.greenpeace.org/australia/resources/photo-stories/climate-change/save-\
anvil-hill)
This is an absurd and disastrous step taken by the New South Wales
government. By approving this mine, the government are basically telling
us they don’t care – they will approve any mine, anywhere, regarding of
the overwhelming opposition. They have also opened the doors for a raft
of new coal mines in the Hunter Valley region of NSW. We need to draw a
line in the sand with the coal industry and say “enough is enough”. You
cannot deal with climate change in Australia without dealing with coal
and by expanding the industry, we are wilfully riding roughshod over the
local land and the planet’s atmosphere.
Let's face it - if you live on Earth, this mine is going to affect you.
Each year, enough coal will be mined from Anvil Hill to produce 27
million tonnes of greenhouse pollution. The mine will be in operation
for 30 about 20 years and by that time, its greenhouse impact would have
been 529 million tonnes (more than the annual emissions of many). The
NSW government is choosing to further fuel global warming for the sake
of keeping the coal industry happy.
*I urgently need you to do a few things* – let’s call it a 4-step guide
to taking remote action.
*1.* _Most important._ Send this email far and wide – many of you
receiving this are from outside Australia which is great. Send it to
others internationally and tell the world what the NSW government is
doing to its atmosphere.
*
2.* Email Morris Iemma (New South Wales Premier) and Frank Sartor
(Planning Minister - the guy who made the decision on the Anvil Hill
mine). Tell them that you know what is going on and will be letting the
rest of the world know about their plans to further fuel global warming.
Morris Iemma:

Frank Sartor:

And if you live in Australia, email your state and federal MPs about
this too.
*
3.* Write a letter to the following papers to tell them what you think
of New South Wales treating the climate with such reckless contempt:
Sydney Morning Herald –
letters@... <mailto:
letters@...>
The Daily Telegraph -
letters@...
<mailto:
letters@...>
Australian Financial Review -
edletters@...
<mailto:
edletters@...>
The Australian -
letters@...
<mailto:
letters@...>
When you write a letter, please end with your address and a phone number
you can be contacted on (even if you’re international).
*
4.* Go to this web page with a story about Anvil Hill and if the poll is
still open, vote NO to Anvil Hill being turned into a coal mine.

_Your help is truly appreciated. We really can’t let this mine go ahead
and will be campaigning on many fronts to stop it. This is one of those
fronts and to be effective, we need as many people around the world
showing their opposition to the mine.
