Subject: [Mediarelease] New Zealand to be first carbon
neutral country

New Zealand to be first carbon neutral country.
05 March 07 - For immediate Release

Prime Minister Helen Clarke is setting the direction for a realigning of
the NZ economy to Carbon Neutrality. New Zealand is taking the lead to
be the first country to be net zero emissions across all sectors.

The New Zealand Government is in the process of developing a series of
targets, the first of which is that 6 of it's 34 own agencies will be
Carbon neutral by 2012.

"New Zealand is targeting all key sectors of their economy and are going
to reduce their emissions to near zero emissions and then offset the
rest, at the same time the Australian government, representing some of
the biggest polluting industries in the world such as BHP and Rio Tinto,
can't even agree to the 108% increase on 1990 levels. that we would be
bound to under the Kyoto agreement, which is the biggest concession
given to any industrialised country." said Matthew Wright Beyond Zero
Emissions Campaigner.

On the back of the Prime Ministers stated policy position Contact Energy
supplier of 25% of New Zealand's energy, has announced it will at least
delay if not cancel it's already consented carbon-producing, gas-fired,
400MW Otahuhu C power plant by at least 18 months. Contact
subsequently followed up this announcement with a commitment to develop
2 billion dollars worth of wind power and geothermal resource.

"As soon as the New Zealand government stated their position, the debate
shifted and now we've seen some real positive response from industry.
One large energy company is moving strategy, resources and capital away
from a carbon producing energy infrastructure and towards renewables."
If this was done in Australia then we'd see the same result." said
Adrian Whitehead BZE lead campaigner.

Meridien Energy NZ's largest electricity producer has certified it's
entire electricity product net Zero emissions by doing a full audit,
reducing remaining emissions to near zero and then offsetting what's
left.

"This is more than an electricity company just having a green option,
this is a company that only sells carbon neutral electricity and it's
the biggest in New Zealand." said Mr Whitehead.

"In New Zealand you've got the Labour Government saying they'll go
carbon neutral. In Australia you've got the now disgraced former
Environment minister holding up wind projects with bogus excuses, Labor
governments and the Federal Labor opposition committing to waste more
and more billions on unproven clean coal technologies, and you've even
got the Australian Greens political party touting weak targets for
Greenhouse reductions.

"I'd like to see the Australian Greens come out in front and set the
national Agenda."

"I'd like the Greens to call for near Zero emissions by 2020 with a
complete phase out of coal mining for the energy sector by 2020"
"Jobs will be easily transferred into the renewables sector with any
remaining jobs to be targeted for reskilling, retraining and ongoing
employment subsidies." said Mr Wright.

"As for the effect of the Export earnings, quick action by the
government to create value across the economy utilising the intellectual
capacity of our nation will cushion us against the effects of the
downscaling of the 25 Billion dollars in dirty money we bring in each
year." said Mr Wright.

"New Zealand took the lead when it was the first in the world to give
the vote to women, and Australia followed suit soon after, it's now time
we do the same on going Zero Emissions and beyond across all sectors of
our economy." said Mr Wright

Subject: Palm Sunday in 24 days!

To all our friends of the Palm Sunday Alliance for a nuclear free future!

It's been a big and exciting week since our last e-mail update.

We now have 62 endorsing organisations, with the list growing daily. Please see
http://nuclearfoolsday.org/endorsers for the full list, and if there are
organisations you are involved in who have not yet endorsed, please ask them to
endorse.

Melbourne had a highly successful public meeting with about 200 people
attending! There are photos available at http://nuclearfoolsday.org/melbourne .
The turn out of people and their engagement on the night is an indication to us
that the issues of the nuclear cycle are important for people, and people are
willing to come out of their homes to say so. People do not want Australia to
become the world's uranium quarry or waste dump and people are deeply concerned
about the lack of action on nuclear weapons disarmament.

Some keen people also leafleted outside the Victorian Labour Party conference on
Saturday morning. There were many delegates engaged about why the uranium
policy should not be changed at the National conference in April.

Palm Sunday events all around Australia. There are events planned EVERY State
and Territory! There is amazing coordination between groups around the country,
and fantastic creativity among all the groups. Please see
www.nuclearfoolsday.org for more information. For those interstate, please keep
us informed about your events so we can update the website.

Fliers and Posters The website now has fliers and posters which people can
download. For people wanting to adapt the flier with their local details, a
template is available there also for you to adapt. If you would like a
personalised flier, please e-mail details to: azane83@...

Melbourne: Watch nuclear go down at Moomba
Felicity Hill is jumping off the bridge for Moomba's Birdman competition! (when
will feminism reach the organisers of Moomba you may ask!). As well as watching
her "Mr Burns" go down in the water, the Melbourne crew are leafleting
Federation Square from 9.30am. Look for a group with 10,000 leaflets and please
come and join us!

Melbourne: Please Help with Promotion!!
Larger and smaller colour posters and fliers advertising Palm Sunday events have
been printed and are beautiful! Can you commit to putting up posters?
Do you know businesses that might display them in their window?
Can you distribute fliers?
Please pick up posters and glue from Friends of the Earth, 312 Smith Street,
Collingwood between 10 am - 6pm

Melbourne: Creative Collective
Please join the Creative Collective meeting every Saturday at 10am at
TradesHall. They are creating props, banners and puppets. Please email

*/Reports from Marianas Variety/*
* *
07 MARCH 2007 PHONPHEI(Pacnews) - The seas are rising from global
warming and starting to take away islets in Micronesia, a conservation
group told leaders of the voyaging canoes Hokulea and Alingano Maisu.

Ben Namakin, an official with the Conservation Society of Pohnpei, said
that in the last five years rising ocean levels have taken a sandy islet
a couple of miles south of Pohnpei and split another nearby islet.

Namakin, whose home atoll Kiribati has a mean elevation of less than 10
feet, said hes worried about the future of Micronesia.

Imagine your home sinking, he said.

As the crews of the Hokulea and Alingano Maisu sail through Micronesia
to the home island of renowned navigator Mau Piailug, they are learning
about the tenuous condition of many low-lying atolls.

Maus home island of Satawal is about a mile long and a half-mile wide
and about 12 feet in elevation.
Throughout the more than 2,000 islands, atolls and islets of Micronesia,
many islanders are noticing an alarming change in weather patterns.

Non-governmental organisations as well as the nations of Micronesia have
been speaking out about the impact of rising seas and global warming.

In the Federated States of Micronesia, Pohnpei resident Rihse Anson said
the sea has risen by about a foot in the last 20 years and is just a few
inches below her house floor, which has been raised several times.

During an unusual high tide about 10 years ago, the ocean flooded her home.

Id like to move, but the problem is financial, she said. My husband
died four years ago.

In the Marshall Islands where the average elevation of the 1,225
islands, atolls and islets is 7 feet above sea level more than 60,000
residents face potential devastation.

William Kostka, director of the nonprofit Micronesia Conservation Trust,
fears that with ocean levels predicted to rise by 7 to 23 inches by
2100, the loss of farm land could be devastating.

Its a big threat to us, and a lot of people who are living in the
outer islands depend on the taro patches, Kostka said. If theres
saltwater intrusion, youre taking away their livelihood.

The oceans might even rise 4 to 8 inches higher than the projected 23
inches, depending on the rate of melting by polar ice sheets, according
to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The panel said human-induced global warming, caused primarily by the
burning of fossil fuels, is also likely increasing the power of storms,
which can also create flooding in the low-lying atolls of Micronesia.

Some Micronesians say they arent receiving the crucial support needed
from the United States to combat global warming.

Alson Kelon, who runs a canoe sailing group in Majuro, said the
Marshallese have allowed the U.S. to use Kwajalein for missile testing
and for past nuclear tests on the northern atolls of Bikini and Enewetak.
But he said the Bush administration has not signed the Kyoto Protocol, a
pledge for nations to adopt guidelines to reduce greenhouse gases and
global warming.

Kelon helps perpetuate the tradition of sailing canoes among young
people in the Marshall Islands.
But all that work, he said, could be literally washed away.

I think of the kids. Where are the grandchildren going to live? he
said..PNS (ENDS)

IPPNW News Alert

Online Petition to Demand Trident Cancellation

The UK Parliament will be voting on whether to renew the UK's Trident
nuclear missile program on March 14, 2007 -- less than two weeks away.
If Trident is renewed, this ensures that the UK will have nuclear
weapons far into the future. As members of an international community
committed to the abolition of nuclear weapons, we must make our
collective voices heard on this issue.

US medical student Tova Fuller, in consultation with IPPNW's UK
affiliate, Medact, has created an online petition demanding the
cancellation of the Trident replacement. You can read and sign the
petition at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/Trident_Petition. Please
forward this web address to all of your contacts. The petition deadline
is March 7, to allow enough time to disseminate the text and signatures
to key Members of Parliament before the debate.

More information about Trident and the blockade at the UK submarine
base at Faslane can be found at the IPPNW student website --
http://www.ippnw-students.org/trident.html.

Elders Death Caused by 2010 Olympics
INTERNATIONAL NATIVE YOUTH MOVEMENT STATEMENT
FOR ANTI-OLYMPIC CAMPAIGN

ELDERS DEATH CAUSED BY GREEDY 2010 OLYMPICS AND ITS ACCOMPLICES

"ALTHOUGH THE VANCOUVER-WHISTLER 2010 WINTER OLYMPICS ARE PLANNED TO
TAKE PLACE IN ONLY THE ST'AT'IMC & SQUAMISH TERRITORIES THE NEGATIVE
EFFECTS OF THESE GAMES WILL CARRY OUT ONTO OTHER INDIGENOUS TERRITORIES OF
THE
AREA AND THE AFTERMATH OF THIS WILL CREATE AN INVASION, NOT SEEN SINCE THE
GOLD RUSH"-NYM (CANCEL OLYMPIC LEAFLET, 2006)

The Native Youth Movement is calling for a Boycott and Cancellation
of the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. The Games are scheduled to take place on
un-surrendered Native Land from February 12-27, 2010. The Olympic
Games represent a continued history of colonization and Genocide.

On Saturday, February 24th, 2007, 2007, 73-year old Pacheedaht Elder
and great-grandmother Harriet Nahanee died from health complications
stemming from being imprisoned in Surrey Pre-trial hell-hole for 14 days.
Harriet Nahanee was locked up by BC Supreme Courts' evil Madame Justice
Brenda Brown because of her role in blocking the expansion of the Sea-to-Sky
Highway, which destroyed the area of Eagleridge Bluffs for the 2010
Olympics.
We hold the International Olympic Committee (IOC), KKKanada, the
Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee (VANOC) and the sell-out chiefs of
"2010
Olympic Host Nations," Mt. Currie, Musquem, Tsleil-Waututh and
Squamish responsible for her death. The death of our Elder is nothing short
of murder, murdered for games and greed, for fun and amusement. Her
fighting spirit is an inspiration to us all and she will never be forgotten.

Manifest Destiny is the white-man's justification for their expansion
and destruction. It mean's "gods will." They feel it is the will of
their god to destroy our Land, our People and our way of life. It is this
evil
mentality of white supremacy that drives the greed and destruction
brought on by the 2010 Winter Olympics.

WHY WE SAY NO TO THE MASONIC OLYMPICS

ROME BELONGS IN EUROPE. THIS IS INDIAN LAND!

In preparation for the 2010 Games whole mountains are being cut in
half and blown up for road expansion, untouched valleys and clean mountain
eco-systems are being clear-cut and destroyed. Whole species are
being wiped off the face of the Earth, thousands of Native Peoples still
survive and depend on the land for their food and survival. The destruction
of the grizzly bears, mountain goats, marmots, grouse, deer, owls, eagles,
squirrels and all the wildlife, trees and water is also a destruction
of our Peoples way of life. The 2010 Games are also forcefully removing
thousands of what the system call the poor and giving them no choice of
shelter
but the hard, cold concrete which take the lives of ten of thousands and
the spirits of millions more.

The 2010 Olympic Games are nothing more than an announcement to the
world to come to BC, Vancouver-Whistler to have fun and do business. The
mandate of the British Columbia government is to "make BC an all seasons
resort." (Premier Gordon Campbell, 2004)

TOURISM IS TERRORISM

Tourism is today's manifest destiny. Excitement, adventure and fun,
come before food, cloths, shelter and water. The white-man's playground
comes before the survival of Indigenous People. Tourists feel that it is
their right, their will to go anywhere they want, and do what they want, no
matterwhat life they destroy.

They are mistaken, with over 40 all-season resorts planned for BC by the
invaders, the will of the white-man is still imposed on the land and
Native People with the gun of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).

In 2001, the RCMP made over 70 arrests to protect Sun Peaks Ski Resort
from Native Warriorz and Elders who demanded the resort halt its illegal
and destructive expansion in unceded Secwepemc Territory.

Sun Peaks, along with the governments of BC and KKKanada, bulldozed down
houses and destroyed Sweat Lodges on International Human Rights Day,
December 10th, 2001.

St'at'imc Warriorz have built a new village in un-surrendered
Territory to stop a $550-million ski resort, being pushed by Olympic
medallist Nancy Green-Raine.

Sutikalh is among one of the only re-possessed villages in North America,
along with Ganikeh and continues to be an inspiration for
Anti-Olympic/resort
resistance.

The 2010 Games are also a promotion to open up untouched and isolated
areas for massive industrial developments of pollution and rape:

MINES of all shapes and sizes, diamonds, gold, uranium, coal, copper,
zinc, silver & anything else they can make a profit or weapon from.

DAMS for electricity and fake power which robs the land of water that
has fed it since time immemorial, annihilating the fish whose genetic
memory only knows the water which will no longer flow.

LOGGING for all types of development need `clear' land to operate,
free of trees, bushes, animals and Indians who depend on it all.
(DON'T ALL HUMANS NEED TREES FOR OXYGEN? MAYBE JUST US).
OIL RAPING (DRILLING) on-shore and in the ocean and
OIL PIPELINES to carry all the stolen oil

All of these operations will take large amounts of water and the
little water that is left will be bottled up and sold. (One example: a
proposal by Mike McCarthy would take 100 truck loads of water a day from
four
alpine creeks near Adams Lake and make $2.5 billion per year, from unceded,
un-surrendered Secwepemc Territory).

With increased production and rape of our resources, more
transportation routes, ROADS, & RAILWAYS will need to be built. DEEP SEA
PORTS will
be built to ship off this increase in stolen goods.

All these types of industrial development and expansion, invades more
and more un-surrendered Indian Territories, ever time digging up more of
our ancestors remains and desecrating our Sacred Sites

THIS IS WAR!

We are in the midst of a war between greed and future, progress and
nature, Genocide and Freedom, good and evil.
WE ARE GOOD.
THE SYSTEM IS EVIL.
THE EARTH WILL WIN.

In 2002, a 76-year old Secwepemc Elder Irene Billy went to Europe
with Ske7cis Manuel to submit an official submission request to the
International Olympic Committee, to not choose BC, Vancouver-Whistler
for the bid of the 2010 Olympic Games. She represented all the grassroots
Indigenous People, the Earth and the generations not yet born. The
International
Olympic Committee did not listen to her and we know they will not listen to
us either, but we had to ask, so that when the Olympics is stopped by
other means than talking, the World cannot say, "Why didn't you just ask?"

So today we will ask all of our People and allies in the Struggle to
voice your support for the Anti-Olympics Coalition and Movement. All of
those who say they oppose the continued Genocide of Indigenous Peoples, now
is
when we need to hear it. Voice your opposition, when you do not speak up
against injustice and Genocide you are an accomplice to it.

We send a special request to all those progressive Movements,
individuals and organizations in BC to unite and write statements supporting
the Anti-Olympic Movement: Wasase Movement, CIPO-VAN, Other Campaign
Vancouver, Western Wilderness Committee, Greenpeace, Anti-War Coalition,
Redwire, United Native Nations, Union of BC Indian Chiefs, Indigenous
Network
of Economics and Trade (INET), David Suzuki, Steve Nash and all those
who still use oxygen to breathe we hope to unite with you. If not, your
silence will speak a million words. You can't be a logger and love trees.

For the enemies of the Earth, sleep well now.
The future will be a long hard fight! Your time is running very short!
The torrential rains will join us in this battle!
Pray for rain! Native Youth Movement Red Power!
Long live the Zapatistas! Long live the Warrior Society!
Boycott Sun Peaks & Whistler!
Free Leonard Peltier!

SEE YOU IN 2010!

NOS VEMOS EN 2010!

Daily Message:

Too often, environmental news is bad news -- but this week we have
several stories that show how powerful environmental advocates can be.

Megan Tady's article describes how the Inuit are fighting back to save
their melting home by trying to force the U.S. to be accountable for
global warming pollution through international courts.

In Texas, environmentalists and their allies helped put one of the
country's dirtiest polluters on a greener path. And across the country,
Teresita Perez writes, the unlikely alliance of religious right
organizations and environmentalists is trying to protect women and
their children from the harmful effects of toxic waste.

Each story illustrates not just community struggles, but the larger
fight to pressure the Bush administration into taking decisive steps to
curb pollution that will protect people in the U.S. and around the world.

Thanks for reading.

hiya Peter (and the list)

no, Greg has not been put on any restriction list. There is only one person
on the restricted list, and that is Hartlod, all the rest are spam robots. I
took the decision to ban Hartlod after he kept waffling rubbish and would
not "hear". He also spammed many members off list (including me - even AFTER
i had threatened him with police action).

Greg was a member but left, conversations grow heated at times...
;-)
i am not about to ban or restrict members that stay on topic and argue about
the benefits (or other) of technologies that i do not fully understand. That
is called honest and open debate :-)
it allows me to learn. i love it, don't you?

Insults thrown about; my personal thoughts, i have never seen anyone
physically harmed by words on a screen (remember "water off a ducks back").
It seems to me that all the people on this list are above that sort of
rubbish anyhows.

All new members that join (since i changed the settings due to the spam
problem) are moderated unless i (or another moderator) change(s) their
membership settings. By all means if there is a delay in the approval of any
future member feel free to take anyone you think may be of benefit to the
groups goal (off moderated) - climate change ACTION.
You may now also ban.
The only reason to ban someone is if they continue to argue the facts of
climate change. It is time wasting and completely OPPOSITE to the groups
reason for forming. There is no point in that if the group's focus is to fix
this problem.

Do you know how to do it (unmoderate/ban someone)?

I takes me many hours just to download my mail so time i spend on the web is
very limited. This is also because Dodo gives me 12-14 kbps transfer rate
on my cheap plan. Often webpages time out before they load. Please try to
send me only text emails if at all possible, this saves a massive amount of
mail download time.

There is no broadband out here, and no one seems able to help me get a
better connection to date.
Attending to little admin tasks like this can take me many hours.

I have sorted it now, and i am about to upgrade your membership so that you
will be able to ban if you wish as well.

...also copying this to Greg and the CCA list ... Members... is there anyone
else out there that would like to help moderate the group? Many hands make
light work.

anyhows Peter, hope life is treating you well, and thanks for pointing out
the overly lengthy delay in upgrading Greg's membership
:-)

Warmest regards
Anne

Hello Anne,

Evidently you've put Greg Hopwood on your restriction list.

As one of your appointed Moderators I've been allowing messages from Greg to
pass through because I've found, being a technical man myself, no fault with
them.

But it has concerned me that you would have moderated his postings for a
reason and that I should not pass them through if this would displease you.

There have been no adverse repercussions of which I'm aware and I've had no
complaints from anyone.

I invite you to reconsider your partial ban on Greg's postings and advise me
of your wishes. If there's been some difficulties in the past then it's
almost certain Greg will have learned from them. I currently view him as an
asset to your Group.

Kind regards,

Industry closes anti-coal website

http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/industry-closes-anticoal-website/2007/03/04/\

Wendy Frew, Environment Reporter
March 5, 2007

THE mining industry has used copyright laws to close an anti-mining
website launched by a small protest group in Newcastle.

The NSW Minerals Council has spent hundreds of thousands of dollars on
a TV, print and billboard advertising campaign and launched a website
extolling the virtues of mining. The campaign's slogan is "Life:
brought to you by mining".

The anti-coal group Rising Tide created its own website sending up the
campaign with comments such as "Rising sea levels: brought to you by
mining".

The website's hosts were forced to remove it within 24 hours of its
launch, after the Minerals Council issued a notice under the Copyright
Regulations 1969 complaining the content and layout infringed copyright.

Rising Tide remade the website, using its own photographs and layout.
However, the council lodged a second complaint.

"They are trying to silence us," said a Rising Tide member, Steve
Phillips. "We have issued a counter-notice rejecting the Minerals
Council's spurious claims. [It] now has 10 days in which to take the
matter [to court]."

There is growing public concern about coal's contribution to climate
change, and mining's threat to underground and above-ground water
supplies.

The council's chief executive, Nikki Williams, said its complaint was
not an attempt to silence Rising Tide. "They have to abide by the
[copyright] laws," she said. However, she admitted she had not seen
the revised website, and did not know if the council would take the
matter to court.

Dr Williams disputed claims by Rising Tide that the council was
running the campaign to counter growing concern about coal.

"It is a community awareness campaign . it is about establishing a
fair voice for the mining industry; it is simply a matter of the
facts," she said, referring to the benefits flowing from the industry
such as jobs, cheap electricity and export revenue.

Protest song marches into charts
An anti-war song is on course to enter the UK charts this weekend after being
promoted at a protest rally.
The cover of Edwin Starr's War (What Is It Good For?) has been released by a
group called Ugly Rumours - the same name as Tony Blair's student band.

Early sales suggest it will go into the top 10, Music Week magazine reports.

Organisers of the peace march in London on Saturday asked supporters to order
the song via their mobiles, calling it a "musical referendum" on Tony Blair.

Powerful message

Ben Grey, who produced the song, told the BBC News website: "We wanted to try
and reach the people who might be more into watching X-Factor than listening to
politics.

"Marches and rallies can be dismissed and ignored but a hit record will mean
everyone is talking about this issue."

Next month marks the fourth anniversary of the invasion of Iraq.

Mr Grey said: "Imagine what a message it would send to the world if this record
was number one during that anniversary."

Chart rules were changed at the start of the year to allow digital single sales
to count towards a chart position even if there is no CD version.

*Newsflash – 3^rd March 2007*

Dear supporters,

We’re sending this message out today, ahead of the March Newsletter, to
give you some advance notice of the Greenpeace forum "Fiddling While the
Climate Burns" that is being held this week. 2 speakers will give
compelling arguments for the adoption of a massively increased renewable
energy sector in this country and why halting the expansion of the coal
industry is central to how we can respond to stopping the acceleration
of Climate Change. The political candidates for the seat of Balmain have

NSW Minerals Council
attempts to silence critics

A satirical website created by climate action group Rising Tide
Newcastle has twice been shut down this fortnight by powerful coal
industry lobby group, the NSW Minerals Council.

The website was conceived as a response to the Minerals Council's “Life.
Brought to you by Mining” advertising campaign. The Minerals Council
campaign, which argues that mining is inextricable from modern luxury
can be viewed at www.nswmining.com.au. Rising Tide members created a
parody website at www.miningnsw.com.au in order to present the other
side of the story and address the damage wrought by mining to the local
and global environment and to the local community.

The parody website has twice been shut down following complaint by the
Minerals Council that the site breached copyright law. That claim is
hotly contested by the authors of the website, Rising Tide Newcastle,
who believe that the coal industry lobby group is simply trying to
silence growing public disquiet about the contribution of the export
coal industry to climate change.

Steve Phillips, spokesperson for Rising Tide Newcastle said, “The coal
export industry constitutes NSW's biggest single contribution to global
climate change. There is also growing public awareness of the terrible
impacts of coal mining on biodiversity, water and air quality. The
Minerals Council want people to know that luxury is dependent on mining:
All we want is for the public to be fully informed about the
consequences of that luxury, and to realise that while we can have jobs
without coal, and we can have energy without coal, we cannot have a coal
industry without climate change.”

Rising Tide has now moved the site to an off-shore host in order that
the information contained within it can remain in the public domain.

The website is officially relaunched as of today.

“The Minerals Council is abusing legal process to ensure that its
public-relations spin is unquestioned and that community criticism of
its methods or message is quashed as quickly as possible” said Ned
Haughton, the site’s graphical designer.

Mr. Phillips continued, "We have issued a counter-notice rejecting the
Minerals Council's spurious claims. The Minerals Council now has ten
days in which to take the matter further."

“The Minerals Council say they want a “balanced debate” on the impacts
of coal mining on local, regional, and global environments – we welcome
that wholeheartedly. Their rhetoric however, is sharply at odds with
their attempts to silence legitimate criticism from community groups.”

Please see the following page for background information on this case.

Background

On February 19th this year, the NSW Minerals Council (NSWMC) launched an
expensive public relations campaign with the slogan “Life: Brought to
you by mining.” The campaign includes billboards, television, and
newspaper advertisements, and the website www.nswmining.com.au

Shortly after the launch of the NSWMC website, Rising Tide Newcastle
(RTN)set up a satirical and critical website at www.miningnsw.com.au.
This website was a mirror image of the NSWMC website, except that the
text was different, describing the negative social and environmental
effects of the mining industry.

The hosts of the RTN website were contacted by NSWMC lawyers within 24
hours of the launch of the site. The NSWMC lawyers abused a clause of
the Commonwealth Copyright Regulations to forced the website hosts to
remove the site. RTN created the original website as a satirical
imitation of the NSWMC site, with rewritten commentary. While this was
most probably legal under the Copyright Act's Fair Dealing clause as a
parody, the hosts were legally required to remove the site pending a
response to the Minerals Council's claim of copyright infringement,
which did not specify the articles of alleged copyright.

RTN then completely re-made the site, with original layout and images
that were either original or used with permission, in order to remove
all possibility of copyright infringement. The NSWMC lawyers
nevertheless contacted the new website hosts within 24 hours, with a
similar claim letter, and again had the site removed under Regulation
20J of the Copyright Regulations.

While the site had not contravened any copyright laws, as the lawyers
for the NSWMC may well have known, the host was again legally obliged to
remove the site.

RTN have submitted a counter-notice, rejecting the allegations of the
NSWMC. The NSWMC now have a 10 period in which they can take the matter
further, which would require taking RTN to court over the incident.

In the meantime, the RTN website has been relaunched with an offshore
host. International copyright law does not have the same automatic
take-down clause of Australian copyright law.

"Think of the climate as a small boat on a rather choppy ocean. Under normal
circumstances the boat will rock to and fro, and there is a finite risk that the
boat could be overturned by a rogue wave. But now one of the passengers has
decided to stand up and is deliberately rocking the boat ever more violently.
Someone suggests that this is likely to increase the chances of the boat
capsizing. Another passenger then proposes that with his knowledge of chaotic
dynamics he can counterbalance the first passenger and indeed, counter the
natural rocking caused by the waves. But to do so he needs a huge array of
sensors and enormous computational reasources to be ready to react efficiently
but still wouldn't be able to guarantee absolute stability, and indeed, since
the system is untested it might make things worse.

So is the answer to a known and increasing human influence on climate an ever
more elaborate system to control the climate? Or should the person rocking the
boat just sit down?"

U.S. Projects Steep Rise in CO2 Emissions

That projection comes from an internal draft report from the Bush
administration that is more than a year overdue at the United
Nations. The draft report, which is still being completed, projects
that the current administration's climate policy would result in the
emission of 9.2 billion tons of greenhouse gases in 2020, a 19
percent increase from 7.7 billion tons in 2000.

The White House Council on Environmental Quality has been
coordinating the draft report. A spokeswoman, Kristen Hellmer, said
it "will show that the president's portfolio of actions and his
financial commitment to addressing climate change are working. And
the president is always looking at ways to address our energy
security and environmental needs."

In my opinion, the quote from the Whitehouse Council on Environmental
Quality is very telling regarding how out of touch the Whitehouse is
with the situation!

wonder which oil company sponsored this?

did a bit of research on the topic a while back.
the hydrocarbon sellers fasley claim production of hydrogen for motor
fuel requires 24-27% more energy.

but one only need look at the production of hydrogen as motor fuel Vs
production of petroleum and dieseline as motor fuels, and the fallacy
crumbles.

water boils at 100 degrees celsius.
crude oil boils at 600 degrees celsius.

spliting hydrogen and oxygen molecules from water via electrolysis
requires 1.7 volts. thus perfectly achievable with low voltage direct
current applications, like photovoltaic panels or a wide range of
other sustainable electricity generation methods.

thermal spliting of crude oil is dependent on massive amounts of
electricity, as californian blackouts causing the shut down of
refinaries proves.
in fact the oil companies got the govt to guarentee power to the
refinaries at everyone else's expense in the event of power shortages.

so believe what you like, but the future of mechanised personal
transport lies with porcelain rotary internal combustion engines
running on hydrogen.
those who don't get on board will be left in the wastelands.

Dear Friends of the Palm Sunday Alliance for a peaceful and nuclear free
future.

With Palm Sunday in just over a month, it's fantastic to be part of the
buzz of people organising Palm Sunday events around the country.

The call for people to be active on this issue couldn't have come at a
more critical time. News about nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons
negotiations seems to be a smokescreen for the push to make Australia
the world's uranium quarry and nuclear waste dump.

What a reminder we cannot be the silent majority - we must be loud and
clear about our views! Inspire your friends and colleagues to join in
