For those of you interested in things Corsair in Tassie, informal races
were conducted at Low Head on the 14th and 28th of January. Low Head
is 35 odd minutes north of Launceston at the mouth of the Tamar River.
The 28th (today) was cancelled due to excessive wind (40 knots and 1.5
meteres of good old Bass Strait swell). The event held on the 14th was
open to three divisions - Corsairs, small dinghy's and historic craft.
The organisers were delighted with a good turnout in all divisions, but
most importantly 8 Corsairs of mixed vintage competed in 15 to 25 knot
winds and a 1 metre swell. Needless to say the downhill leg made for
some interesting sailing. None of us were game to fly a kite - we just
hung on and surfed. Bloody marvellous fun.
Given the success of the day, an expanded calendar of races is being
canvassed amongst Low Head Corsair owners for next year. Who knows
where it will end. Hopefully a few Corsairs from further afield might
have a crack.
