Thank you Marcus, thank you Doreen,

I'm getting very excited about a sail this weekend (taking my wife
for a picnic sail down to Quarantine near Portsea for our 10 year
wedding anniversary! - not quite what she had in mind!!)

I'll take some shots of my mainsheet setup too.

Doreen,

Great to hear some activity and advice coming through on the site. I am
experimenting with mast rake and wedging the mast. can anyone out there
provide me with some details or measurements on what they know is a good mast
rake for what conditions?

Regards

Tim

Hi Sam

For the mainsheet a rachet block with cleat is a very good option.
Much better on your hands.
Make sure that the cleat position is right, just one pull and it
should be able to un cleat it self straight away.

What I will do is that in two weeks when we are sailing again I will
make some close up photo's of main/ jib sheet rigging etc. So you can
get a idea how other people are rigging there boats.

If anybody would like to have a particular photo's showing any part
of the rigging just let me know.

Cheers Doreen

Sam
For what its worth, we have just replaced a worn out ratchet
mainsheet block on 836. The previous owners had cable-tied back the
cam cleat so that it no longer functioned. Having spoken to them
about it, the main reason for this was that they always raced with a
mainsheet hand - it was his job to look after it. My wife and I sail
with our two children and occasionally race two-up, so I decided to
replace the old block with a cleating ratchet block, so that when I
have one hand on the helm and one on the mainsheet things are a bit
less stressfull. I am sure, however, the Corsair champions out there
will tell you that, given practice, a cleating mainsheet block is not
necessary - even without a mainsheet hand.
One thing I would say though - if you buy a cleating block get one
that allows for adjustment to the cleating angle. I have set ours
very high so that it takes a positive action to cleat the mainsheet,
not an accidental one. It is far better to have the block run than
cleat when you don't want it to, particularly gybing in a strong wind.

Can you advise me if it is OK for me to race my Corsair in official races

acceptable?

Thanks for replying Doreen,

I'd love some help.

I'm heading off to Whitworths to buy a new bock to go on the centre
board case...

I'm thinking something like the Ronstan RF51110 Series 50 Single,
Becket, Universal Head

My next dilemma is the type of block for the Mainsheet that's attached
to the footwell... does it need to have some locking mechanism - or is
it best to have the sheet running free - I find this pretty wearing on
the hands.

Any help much appreciated.

Oh, I'm also thinking of a wind pointer for the top of the mast...
worthwhile?

For those of you interested in things Corsair in Tassie, informal races
were conducted at Low Head on the 14th and 28th of January. Low Head
is 35 odd minutes north of Launceston at the mouth of the Tamar River.
The 28th (today) was cancelled due to excessive wind (40 knots and 1.5
meteres of good old Bass Strait swell). The event held on the 14th was
open to three divisions - Corsairs, small dinghy's and historic craft.
The organisers were delighted with a good turnout in all divisions, but
most importantly 8 Corsairs of mixed vintage competed in 15 to 25 knot
winds and a 1 metre swell. Needless to say the downhill leg made for
some interesting sailing. None of us were game to fly a kite - we just
hung on and surfed. Bloody marvellous fun.

Given the success of the day, an expanded calendar of races is being
canvassed amongst Low Head Corsair owners for next year. Who knows
where it will end. Hopefully a few Corsairs from further afield might
have a crack.

Hi Corsair Group,

I'm a novice sailer with an old Corsair at my disposal - it's missing a few bits
and pieces
around the main sheet and I'm looking for advice on how to set up the runnig
rigging.

Specifically, what kinds of blocks would you recomend for the main sheet - it's
missing the
one mounted on the centre case and the one mounted on the floor.

Any ideas about the best places to buy gear for Corsairs in Melbourne?

Thank you in advance.

I have seen people make a makeshift rudderbox out of two plates of aluminium
(or stainless steel), packed out with some plywood or some plastic. You can
easily make an attachment for the top for housing the tiller. You can also
set up blocks quite easily on the side for easily raising and lowering your
rudder. If all else fails, there are a number of Naval Cadet units around
that have spare parts and could be willing to sell one to you (at one point
they were talking about moving to a different class of boat). You can find
them in the White pages.

Hi Tim,

Mast rake will be determines by other factors and is mostly determined
by the sails centre of effort and how much windward helm you want to
achieve. (Or Nuetral / Lee helm if thats what you want....)
Other factors will come into play such as number of crew, seating and
or trapize use, centre plate rake etc. In other words its a balance
game and may require some trial and eror to get it right for your
boat. Of course the less "helm" you achieve the better as it reduces
rudder stall.

Hope this helps.

Tim ,
If your still hanging around here, you could try the local Navy Cadet
unit for info, they all had Corsairs, some (Cairns for example) still
sail them. The Canberra Yahct Club has a few and were the ones to lend
me the keel to copy. Im still looking for a few bits and an owners
book would be handy!!!

Roger,

I am a recent Corsair owner and I find the same vibe? I have been wanting
some feedback and advice but not much around. I have recently made a new
rudder. The centre board is basically a 6mm piece of aluminium. If you need a
template I could make one from mine and send it to you.

Hi,
Looking for a rudder and keel, any little rigging bits and the
whereabouts of Blue Waters Marine? seems Corsairs are a dying
breed...... most of the online links are no longer working or nothing
posted.

<<Rigging plate.JPG>> Marcus,

Thanks heaps for the feedback. Your right, I'm considering all options. My
boat has these aluminium plates mounted on the back rest of the seats about
midway along for the kite lines to be cleated off. There was 2 fairleads on
the rear of the gunwales that I would like to replace with pivoting blocks if
I am to go to the rear of the boat.

Here is an image of the plate and the location. I have not seen these on any
other corsairs. Not that I have seen many.

Regards

Tim Oyston

Tim

Thanks for the note. We have yet to use our spinnaker(s) but looking
at the boat it is possible to use a standard (at least it is on the
Farr 31 I sail on) hook-up where the sheets come outside and aft to a
block about 30cm from the transome on both sides. They then head back
to a plate gunwhale mounted on the c-track just inboard and aft of the
shrouds. The plate has a cam-cleat and fairlead and the sheet/brace
is controlled from here. It would be interesting to hear from more
seasoned Corasir sailors as to whether this is overkill - I have seen
photos of the sheets coming from the chute direct to the plate without
heading aft. With the comparatively light forces on the spinnaker
compared to larger boats, maybe the simpler second option might be
better. I intend to try both - I assume you would want to as well.

Hope that helps. Will try to send you some photos of our bits and
pieces.

Marcus

Greeting Marcus!

I am a recent new owner also of 157. However, I'm in the Illawarra about 1 hr
south of Sydney. Hope all goes well. I am doing a full restoration on my boat
and currently have it in bits and pieces. I would love to see an image of
your boat if you have one. I'm particularly interested in spinnaker line
rigging points and the overall deck layout.

Regards

Hi folks
Having become a recent Corsair owner, I am trying to track down any
other Corsairs sailing (or not) in Tasmania. I am aware of a number
of fleets (Port Dalrymple, TS Huon, Low head residents etc), but I am
sure there are more. Please drop me a line.
