Premarin is WHAT?

http://www.progestnet.com/documents/premarin.html

Premarin is a conjugated estrogen product extracted from pregnant mare’s urine. It is manufactured by Wyeth-Ayerst Pharmaceuticals and is most commonly prescribed for women going through menopause, or those who have had a hysterectomy, to relieve hormonal deficiency symptoms. It has been marketed for more than fifty years and is currently prescribed to more than 10,000,000 American women. It is estimated that 1.5 million American women will experience the first symptoms of menopause this year and 750,000 will undergo a hysterectomy. Estrogen is the most lucrative drug in our country today and is promoted by the pharmaceutical industry as the treatment of choice for all menopausal symptoms. Women are routinely prescribed Premarin when they don’t need it, in fact the use of it increases the chances of breast, cervical and uterine cancers by as much as 8 times that of someone not on estrogen! Since the pharmaceutical companies supply 1/3 of all the funding for the medical schools in our country, doctors will continue to be taught to prescribe synthetic drugs.

There are more than five hundred PMU farms in North America with the majority being located in Canada. There are thirty PMU Farms located in North Dakota near the Canadian border. It is estimated by the Humane Society of the United States "that PMU Farms will increase dramatically as millions of baby boomers reach menopausal age".

Here’s how Premarin is manufactured:
The urine is collected from artificially inseminated mares during six of their eleven months of pregnancy. A flexible rubber funnel is positioned between the mares’ hind end and tail in order to collect the urine. The funnel is held in place by a combination of overhead supports and partial body harnesses. Throughout this six month period the mares are held in intensive confinement in very tiny stalls with metal bars on three sides. They are tethered short, preventing them from being able to move around or lie down. The collection harness restricts their movement and causes abrasions. They are given half the amount of water a horse normally should drink in a day so that their urine is more estrogen enriched. During this period they receive no grooming or any physical care whatsoever. There is little knowledge of equines needs on the part of the farm worker’s nor is there vet care!! These mare’s can be used for up to twenty years providing they become pregnant during the short summer breeding season. Remember no vet care here at all!

Once they have outlived their usefulness they are usually then sent to slaughter for human consumption. It is estimated that there are between 60,000 and 85,000 mare’s giving birth annually at the PMU Farms.

The foals that result are allowed to be with their mother’s for a maximum of four months, rather than the usual six months before being weaned. These babies are then sent to the slaughter houses or to unsheltered feedlots to gain weight before being slaughtered for human consumption.Yes, they end up on someone’s dinner table!!

You may wonder how these horses are shipped overseas, well American Airlines is one of the largest carriers of frozen horse meat. Young foals meat is very much in demand and according to the USDA it is very tender. Sad, but true! The inhumane treatment of these pregnant mare’s and their foals is yet another example of the unnecessary suffering animals endure.

This is such an atrocity especially when you consider that there is a natural alternative available for which no animal need suffer in order to produce! If enough women can become aware of the source of Premarin, the suffering that is involved, and about the readily available natural alternative: Progesterone, only then will the demand for Premarin go down.

We all know that when demands go down the PMU farm operators will no longer find it economically feasible to torture these magnificent animals! We can make a difference by showing women, men and doctors everywhere that there is a better choice! By using natural progesterone cream instead of estrogen, we can not only save horses lives, but peoples as well.
