The Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (RCHM), the leading UK professional body dealing with the registration and standards of practitioners of Chinese herbal medicine, strictly prohibits the use of bear bile on the following grounds:

1. It is wholly unacceptable for healthcare professionals to use medicinal substances derived from endangered species.

2. The production of medicinal substances involving inhumane methods is unacceptable on ethical grounds.

3. In most cases alternatives to the use of bear bile can be found among plant medicines with similar therapeutic functions.

Alternatives to Bear Bile
Herbs

A report by the Chinese Association of Medicine and Philosophy and EarthCare has established that there

are at least 54 herbal alternatives to bear bile including Chinese Ivy stem, Dandelion, Chrysanthemum,

Common Sage and Rhubarb. The alternatives are both cheap and effective.

Synthetics

  • The active ingredient in bear bile, UDCA, was first synthesised in 1954 in Japan from dead chickens and is proven to be efficacious in treating liver disease.

  • Ironically far more synthetic bile is consumed in Asia than bear bile - Japan, Korea and China together consume 100 tonnes of synthetic bile annually. (World consumption is estimated to be double this figure.)

  • Synthesised UDCA (using cow or pig bile - and even no animal parts) is a safe medicine with no side effects. It has been successfully used worldwide to treat gallstones, primary cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis and colon cancer.

  • The generic drug name for UDCA is ursodiol. Brand names for UDCA include Actigall and Urso (US); Destolit, Urdox, Ursofalk, and Ursogal (UK); Ursotan (South Africa).

  • Clinical studies are currently being conducted on the use of UDCA in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C and cancer.

  • The latest medical research in 2002 in America, has shown that bile acid is able to cross the blood-brain barrier and may be beneficial in treating Parkinson's, Huntington's and Alzheimer's disease. Researchers stress that this bile acid can be produced synthetically.

  • Professor Clifford J. Steer M.D., Professor of Medicine and Genetics, Cell Biology and Development, University of Minnesota, is at the forefront of groundbreaking research into the application of synthetic UDCA in the treatment of Huntington's Disease. He has confirmed that UDCA can be synthesised without the use of animals - and costs pennies to produce.

Traditional Medicine

Bear Bile

Bear bile is a prized ingredient of Traditional Medicine with a 3,000-year history of usage. The bile liquid within bear gall bladders is classed as a "bitter, cold" medicine with the function of expelling heat in the body. It is used to treat heat-related illnesses such as high temperatures, liver complaints and sore eyes. Bear bile medicines are used in China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam and countries across the world with significant Asian populations.

The active ingredient in bear bile, ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), is more abundant in bears than in any other animal. However, Chinese medical practitioners stress that all bear bile products can be easily replaced by herbal or synthetic alternatives, which are cheaper, more readily available and just as effective.

The main products of bear farms are dry bile powder and some Chinese patent medicines. Bear bile is used mainly as a secondary element with limited composition. The use of bear bile can be divided into two categories; bear bile as medicine, (both treatment and preventative,) and bear bile as tonics and food. China's state pharmacopoeia asserts that its actions include

  • removing heat from the liver

  • relieving convulsions and spasms

  • improving acuity of vision

  • clearing away heat and toxic materials

There are 28 kinds of patent medicine containing bear bile, which are divided as follows:

  • 15 used in ophthalmology

  • 8 in external surgery

  • 4 in internal medicine (vascular and gastric illnesses)

  • 1 in cancer treatment.

Production

The output of dry bile powder from each individual bear is approximately 2 kg per year on average. Before bear farms began to produce bile in large quantities the domestic demand was only 500 kilos annually. Today this has risen dramatically to 4000 kilos and the annual output of dry bile powder from 1994-1998 was approximately 7 tonnes - nearly twice the demand.

Tragically, because the market has been saturated with bear bile, many farmers have now turned to producing non-essential products, such as throat lozenges, shampoo, wine and tea, in order to utilise the surplus. These products have no known health benefit, but allow the farmer to continue making a profit by exploiting the symbol of a majestic species and the trusting minds of naive consumers.

Price

The retail price of farmed bear bile in China varies from province to province. Research in March 2004 by Animals Asia investigators in Sichuan Province revealed that the wholesale price of bear bile powder was RMB4,700 (US$604) per kg. A whole gall bladder in South Korea sells for about US$10,000, whilst in Japan the average price for a wild bear gall bladder is US$33 per gram.

Bear gall bladder and bile Bears are the only mammals to produce large amounts of bile (ursodeoxycholic acid). This is used in traditional Chinese medicine, although herbal and synthetic alternatives are available. Bears are hunted and killed for their gall bladders and other body parts. The Asiatic black bear is most commonly associated with this practice but other species have also been targeted. Bear farms were set up as an alternative to killing bears in the wild. Thousands of bears were trapped and are now kept on farms where their bile is removed either through permanent catheters or during operations. Bear farming is most common in China, Vietnam and Korea.
Poaching black bears for their gall bladders has occurred in the US and Canada.

bearsAP_chapter4

Bear bile from the bear gall bladder is one of the most treasured of traditional Chinese medicines.
Prescriptions for bear gall first appeared in writing in the 7th century (Bensky and Gamble 1986).
Bear bile is believed to have special qualities to treat ailments of the liver, stomach and a diverse illnesses from fever to digestive disorders.
As Asian bear populations decline and wild bear bile and other bear parts become more difficult to obtain, sources of bear parts outside Asia will be developed by traders and others willing to make significant profits.

Commercialization of wildlife and unregulated trade have been contributing factors in the reduction and loss of many wildlife species. bear, traditional medicine.

Fats cannot be digested without bile, which is made in the liver, stored in the gallbladder, and released as needed into the small intestine. Bile (specific bile "acids"), acts somewhat like a detergent, breaking apart the fat into tiny droplets so that it can be acted upon by intestinal enzymes and absorbed. Bile is also essential for the absorption of vitamins A, D, E, and K, the fat soluble vitamins. After digestion, bile acids are reabsorbed by the intestine, returned to the liver, and recycled as bile once again.

Actually, because Lee's bile duct was severed and he can't pour the bile back in, I'm looking for something to help him replace lost bile salts. However, for those with sluggish bile output, I keep seeing "Sam-e" helps to get the liver healthy and bile flowing. http://www.youngagain.com/same1.html

Ursodeoxycholic Acid - UDCA (Actigall, Urso)
UDCA is one of the most important treatments. It's natural bile acid composition improves liver funtion by replacing the more toxic bile acids in bloodstream. Studies have shown that it also improves bile acid transport.

Fibre in flax is famous for its effect of lowering cholesterol, probably because it prevents cholesterol and bile acids from being reabsorbed into the body. Instead, they attach to the fibre and are carried out of the body with the wastes. Finally, fibre is known for its ability to soften the stool, prevent constipation, and maintain regularity.

The natural dietary fiber in flax seed is not digested in the stomach, passing instead to the large intestine (colon), where it acts like a sponge drawing water to the stool and increasing the number of bacteria in the colon. Both contribute to a larger, softer and easier-to-pass stool. Experts also recommend plenty of water, regular exercise, and avoidance of long-term use of over-the-counter laxatives.

Two tablespoons of flax seed stirred into a glass of boiling water will thicken up quickly and have the consistency of a pudding. To use flax as a laxative, drink the mixture before it thickens…the thickening will occur in the stomach. The unbroken flax seed, protected by the shell, will pass through the digestive system without breaking down.

For a person’s body to digest flax seeds and benefit for their many nutritional qualities, including the oils, the shell or hull must be broken.

The mucilage formed by flax can serve another important purpose: the repair of damage caused by taking massive doses of antibiotics. The friendly bacteria in a person’s intestines are destroyed in large quantities if he or she takes antibiotics, birth control pills, or other drugs, especially for a prolonged period. Chronic constipation may develop. Flax mucilage assists intestinal flora in re-establishing itself.

Scientists have found that both the soluble and insoluble types of fiber in flax seed are beneficial. Two-thirds of the fiber in flax is insoluble, consisting of cellulose and lignin. This fiber cleans out the intestines, reducing bowel transit time, therefore helping a person to avoid constipation. The other one-third (soluble) plays an important role in reducing serum cholesterol levels and helps to regulate blood glucose levels.

Some people develop diarrhea after stomach surgery or removal of the gall bladder. The reason may be a change in how quickly food moves through the digestive system after stomach surgery or an increase in bile in the colon that can occur after gallbladder surgery. In many cases, the cause of diarrhea cannot be found. As long as diarrhea goes away on its own, an extensive search for the cause is not usually necessary.

How and why does flax seed work so well?
Flaxseed works in an excellent manner for individuals suffering from common constipation or diarrhea because it moves thorough the digestive tract quickly and results in softer stools. As noted, doctors and nutritionists say it is important to drink water directly after consuming flax seed since it absorbs 10 to 14 times its weight in liquid. Flax seed will help cleanse the colon and continued usage can help avoid colon cancer.

For persons with chronic diarrhea or IBS, flax seed will add substance to their stool
