Medicinal Properties of Honey and Cinnamon

[Note: None of the medicinal claims given in this article could be independently verified. However, it is known that honey and cinnamon are important herbs used in Ayurveda and oriental system of medicine. - Editor, Holisticonline.com]

It is found that mixture of Honey and Cinnamon cures most of the diseases. Honey is produced in most of the countries of the world. Honey can be used without any side effects for any kind of diseases.

Today's science says that even though honey is sweet, if taken in the right dosage as a medicine, it does not harm diabetic patients. Weekly World News, a magazine in Canada, on its issue dated 17 January, 95 has given the following list of diseases that can be cured by Honey and Cinnamon as researched by western scientists.

HEART DISEASES:

Make a paste of honey and cinnamon powder, apply on bread, chappati, or other bread, instead of jelly and jam and eat it regularly for breakfast. It reduces the cholesterol in the arteries and saves the patient from heart attack. Also those who already had an attack, if they do this process daily, they are kept miles away from the next attack. Regular use of the above process relieves loss of breath and strengthens the heartbeat. In America and Canada, various nursing homes have treated patients successfully and have found that as age the arteries and veins lose their flexibility and get clogged; honey and cinnamon revitalizes the arteries and veins.

ARTHRITIS:

Take one part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and add a small teaspoon of cinnamon powder, make a paste and massage it on the itching part of the body slowly. It is noticed that the pain recedes within a minute or two.

Arthritis patients may take daily, morning and night, one cup of hot water with two spoons of honey and one small teaspoon of cinnamon powder. If taken regularly even chronic arthritis can be cured.

In a recent research conducted at the Copenhagen University, it was found that when the doctors treated their patients with a mixture of one tablespoon Honey and half teaspoon cinnamon powder before breakfast, they found that within a week out of the 200 people so treated practically 73 patients were totally relieved of pain and within a month, mostly all the patients who could not walk or move around because of arthritis started walking without pain.

HAIR LOSS:

Those suffering from hair loss or baldness, may apply a paste of hot olive oil, one tablespoon of honey, one teaspoon of cinnamon powder before bath and keep it for approx. 15 min. and then wash the hair. It was found to be effective even if kept on for 5 minutes.

BLADDER INFECTIONS:

Take two tablespoons of cinnamon powder and one teaspoon of honey in a glass of lukewarm water and drink it. It destroys the germs in the bladder.

TOOTHACHE:

Make a paste of one teaspoon of cinnamon powder and five teaspoons of honey and apply on the aching tooth. This may be applied 3 times a day till the tooth stops aching.

CHOLESTEROL:

Two tablespoons of honey and three teaspoons of Cinnamon Powder mixed in 16 ounces of tea water, given to a cholesterol patient, was found to reduce the level of cholesterol in the blood by 10% within 2 hours. As mentioned for arthritic patients, if taken 3 times a day, any chronic cholesterol is cured. As per information received in the said journal, pure honey taken with food daily relieves complains of cholesterol.

COLDS:

Those suffering from common or severe colds should take one tablespoon lukewarm honey with 1/4 spoon cinnamon powder daily for 3 days. This process will cure most chronic cough, cold and clear the sinuses.

INFERTILITY:

Medicine has been using honey for thousands of years to strengthen the semen of men. If impotent men regularly take two tablespoons of honey before going to sleep, their problem will be solved.

In China, Japan and Far-East countries, women, who do not conceive and need to strengthen the uterus, have been taking cinnamon powder for centuries. Women who cannot conceive may take a pinch of cinnamon powder in half teaspoon of honey and apply it on the gums frequently throughout the day, so that it slowly mixes with the saliva and enters the body.

A couple in Maryland, USA, had no children for 14 years and had lost hope of having a child of their own. When told about this process this husband and wife started taking honey and cinnamon as stated above, and the woman conceived after a few months and had twins at full term.

UPSET STOMACH:

Honey taken with cinnamon powder cures stomachache and also clears stomach ulcers from the root.

GAS:

According to the studies done in India & Japan, it is revealed that if honey is taken with cinnamon powder the stomach is relieved of gas.

IMMUNE SYSTEM:

Daily use of honey and cinnamon powder strengthens the immune system and protects the body from bacteria and viral attacks. Scientists have found that honey has various vitamins and iron in large amounts. Constant use of honey strengthens the white blood corpuscles to fight bacteria and viral diseases.

INDIGESTION:

Cinnamon powder sprinkled on two tablespoons of honey taken before food, relieves acidity and digests the heaviest of meals.

INFLUENZA:

A scientist in Spain has proved that honey contains a natural ingredient, which kills the influenza germs and saves the patient from flu.

LONGEVITY:

Tea made with honey and cinnamon powder, when taken regularly arrests the ravages of old age. Take 4 spoons of honey, 1 spoon of cinnamon powder and 3 cups of water and boil to make like tea. Drink 1/4cup, 3 to 4 times a day. It keeps the skin fresh and soft and arrests old age. Life spans also increases and even a 100 years old, starts performing the chores of a 20-year-old.

PIMPLES:

Three tablespoons of Honey and one teaspoon of cinnamon powder paste. Apply this paste on the pimples before sleeping and wash it next morning with warm water. If done daily for two weeks, it removes pimples from the root.

SKIN INFECTIONS:

Applying honey and cinnamon powder in equal parts on the affected parts cures eczema, ringworm and all types of skin infections.

INSECT BITES: Take one part honey to two parts of lukewarm water and add a small teaspoon of cinnamon powder, make a paste and massage it on the itching part of the body slowly. It is noticed that the pain recedes within a minute or two. (I also recommend adding tea tree oil with insect bites--'Cheyenne Cin')

WEIGHT LOSS:

Daily in the morning 1/2hour before breakfast on an empty stomach and at night before sleeping, drink honey and cinnamon powder boiled in one-cup water. If taken regularly it reduces the weight of even the most obese person. Also drinking of this mixture regularly does not allow the fat to accumulate in the body even though the person may eat a high calorie diet.

CANCER:

Recent research in Japan and Australia has reveled that advanced cancer of the stomach and bones have been cured successfully. Patients suffering from these kinds of cancer should daily take one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of cinnamon powder for one month 3 times a day.

FATIGUE:

Recent studies have shown that the sugar content of honey is more helpful rather than being detrimental to the strength of the body. Senior citizens, who take honey and cinnamon power in equal parts, are more alert and flexible. Dr. Milton who has done research says that half tablespoon honey taken in a glass of water and sprinkled with cinnamon powder, taken daily after brushing and in the afternoon at about 3.00 p.m. when the vitality of the body starts to decrease, increases the vitality of the body within a week.

BAD BREATH:

People of South America, first thing in the morning gargle with one teaspoon of honey and cinnamon powder mixed in hot water. So their breath stays fresh throughout the day.

HEARING LOSS:

Daily morning and night honey and cinnamon powder taken in equal parts restore hearing.

Buying Honey:

Honey- Not the stuff sold in cute bear-shaped squeeze bottles in the supermarket, but rather Virgin honey that comes direct from the beekeeper. It's a lot more complex than many realize, and also at considerable risk within the EEU. Why? Because EEU legislators have bowed to the industrial concerns that blend honeys from all over the world to fill their squeeze bottles, and passed a directive that forbids the labeling of beekeeper honey as Virgin; it therefore becomes difficult for beekeepers to distinguish their honeys from the industrial products, and consumers are thus more likely to base their selection simply on price.

Virgin honeys, we were told, are honeys that have been extracted from their combs by centrifugal force and have not been heated or otherwise treated. Since the bees of a hive tend to concentrate on a particular flower until it goes out of season, many virgin honeys are also single-flower honeys that reflect the characteristics of their source flowers; for example honey from orange groves has a delicate orange scent and slight citric acidity that gives definition to the sweetness. If there isn't enough of a particular flower to meet the bees' needs they will, of course, visit other blossoms, and at this point the honey is called millefiori, which means thousand flowers. Despite the name these honeys tend to be quite distinctive because they still reflect the plants growing where the bees live; for example large sections of the Alps produce a millefiore honey that combines the bitterness of chestnuts with the minty overtones from Linden trees. This particular honey will also have resinous and caramel notes whose intensity will depend upon the amount of honeydew the bees used; honeydew is sugar not from flowers, but rather from aphids and other insects that suck sap from the plants (in this case lindens) and excrete the sugars they take up in excess. That bees use the excretions of other insects to make their honey might come as a surprise -- at least it did to me -- but in areas with few flowers they have no other choice. Indeed, much of the honey from northern climes is from honeydew rather than from flowers.

After finding out about the source of the honey we found out about its keeping. All honey is primarily sugar, up to about 80%, with the remaining 20% primarily water and the trace elements that give a given honey its characteristic aromas and flavor. As it comes from the comb it's a liquid, but a supersaturated liquid, and with time most honeys with the exception of those made from acacia, chestnut and honeydew will crystallize; crystallization has no influence on the taste of the honey, though it does change its mouthfeel, because the crystals absorb warmth as they melt on the tongue and thus make the honey feel more refreshing. To reverse the crystallization one need simply heat the honey to a temperature of 40 C (about 100 F) in a water bath, but doing so drives off some of the volatile elements and therefore decreases the honey's bouquet and flavor. The same loss of flavor also occurs naturally with time, and is again temperature dependent: A jar in the refrigerator (below 50 F, or 10 C) will keep for years, the same jar will keep on a kitchen shelf (68 F, or 20 C) for 12-18 months, and in a warm place (85 F, or 30 C) for a couple of months. Note that it will not spoil with time, but rather become just sweet, rather like syrup made from refined sugar. Therefore, though an old honey may no longer be satisfying on a slice of bread, it could be used in making a dessert.

The lesson wound up with a tasting of a number of different honeys; we began with the extraordinary delicacy of acacia, followed by a tangy citrus honey, a creamy, malty honeydew honey, an opulent dandelion honey, the bitterness of chestnut honey, a piece of honey comb to chew, and a rich millefiore honey from an alpine meadow. Seven extraordinarily different honeys, which were followed by a last, rather sweet, predictable honey that seemed insipid by comparison with the others -- a commercial blend, and as I tasted it I understood why the industry is doing its best to keep the beekeepers from using the word Virgin on their labels. When you buy honey, buy honey made by a beekeeper rather than the commercial stuff (the label should at least say who made it); the difference in flavor is well worth the difference in price. And if the beekeeper has several honeys, try them all. The range of Virgin honeys is astonishing.

FAQ's

So where does honey come from?

spacer.gif - 43 Bytes Bees produce honey as food stores for the hive during the winter months when flowers are not in bloom and therefore there is little nectar available.

The nectar collected by the honey bees from flowers and plants is carried to the hive or nest and is then passed to worker bees, who prepare it for storing by adding enzymes.

As the nectar is transferred to the wax storage chambers, water is evaporated away, and it is this process, combined with enzyme activity that converts the nectar into honey.

A hive only needs 20-30 lb of honey to survive an average winter which means that the extra honey can be harvested. A strong colony can produce 2-3 times more honey than they need.

What is honey exactly?

spacer.gif - 43 Bytes Honey is a complex mix of:
  • (80%) natural sugars
  • (18%) water
  • (2%) minerals, vitamins, pollen and protein
Of honey’s 80% natural sugar content, around 70% is made up of fructose and glucose. The balance of these two sugars determines whether a honey is clear or set. Both types are equally pure and additive free.

What is the difference between clear and set honey?

spacer.gif - 43 Bytes The higher the fructose content, the longer the honey will remain liquid. Some honeys contain more glucose than fructose and, therefore, are very likely to crystallise swiftly.

There is no difference in the taste or nutritional value of these two states. Honey can be restored to a liquid state by standing it in warm water for an hour or so.

How many honey varieties are there?

spacer.gif - 43 Bytes Bees can fly up to six miles, although one or two is more common. Within this radius, depending on the flower variety, they can gather nectar from many different types of flower (polyflora honeys) or from one kind of flower (monofloral honeys).

Besides classification by floral source, honeys can also be described according to geographical origin, from a particular country or region. This is because a honey of the same flower type will still vary from country to country because of difference in climate and soil; a polyfloral honey from one country may have a distinct combination of plant source to give a unique flavour.

  • Monofloral: Honey made primarily from a single source including: Acacia, Pine, Orange Blossom, Lime, Rosemary, Thyme, Sunflower, Clover, Leatherwood, Eucalyptus

  • Polyflora: Honey made from the nectar of many different flowers

  • Blends: Combinations of different types of honey blended to achive a particular taste rather like a blended tea or whisky.

How honey is packed commercially?

Your questions answered

Is it true that the cheaper the honey the more it has been refined?
There is no fundamental difference between blended honey and more expensive monofloral honeys. The extraction process - that is when honey is taken from the comb - is essentially the same for all types and grades of honey.

Why is honey warmed before packed into jars?
All honey is slightly heated to melt naturally occurring crystals and filter out very small impurities from the hive e.g. wax. This is carried out as part of the normal production process and helps to protect the natural taste and qualities off pure honey in every jar.

What is 'Flash Heating'
Honey is sometimes put through a heat exchanger for about 30 seconds to make sure that it is liquid. This does not damage the natural enzymes or nutrients.

Are sugar and water sometimes added to honey?
Sugar and water are never added to honey.

Does heating destroy the natural flavour of honey?
Quick and/or gentle heating does not destroy the natural flavour of the honey.
