Eucalyptus is native to Australia, but today can be found growing in subtropical regions worldwide. One of the first recorded medicinal uses of Eucalyptus was by the Australian aborigines, who not only extracted valuable water from its roots, but used its leaves to relieve fevers. It has been reported that early Australian developers were able to successfully treat and cure fever using Eucalyptus leaves.
Eucalyptus is sold as both a supplement and is an ingredient in over-the-counter products. Eucalyptus supplements have been promoted for cough/bronchitis and rheumatism. Eucalyptus as an ingredient in over-the-counter drugs is used for temporary relief of minor aches and pains of muscles and for temporary relief of nasal congestion and coughs associated with a cold.
The medicinal properties of Eucalyptus reside in its oil, which is extracted from the fresh leaves and branch tips, as well as dried leaves. Eucalyptus leaf (Eucalypti folium) is an approved remedy of the German Government's Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (Commission E) for catarrhs of the respiratory tract. Eucalyptus oil (Eucalypti aetheroleum) is approved for internal and external catarrhs of the respiratory tract and externally for rheumatic complaints. Approval by Commission E should not be considered the equivalent of FDA approval. The FDA has a much higher standard and requires the establishment of absolute certainty of safety and efficacy of any product intended to diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent disease and demands that such products be classified as a drug.
Health Benefits of Eucalyptus
Eucalyptus supplements are derived from the fresh leaves and branch tips as well as the dried leaves of the tree known as Eucalyptus Globulus, Eucalyptus fructicetorum, and Eucalyptus smithii. The primary active constituent in eucalyptus leaves is the volatile oil euclyptol. For eucalyptus to provide an effective expectorant and antiseptic action, the volatile oil should contain at least 70% eucalyptol. Eucalyptus oil has been compared to menthol because it acts on receptors in the nasal mucosa, which help to alleviate nasal congestion.

Eucalytpus oil is an extremely potent antiseptic and anti-infective agent
Eucalyptus has been used as a remedy for various types of conditions and health disorders for a long time now. Originating in Australia, the Eucalyptus was used by the aborigines from that geographical region to treat high fever. They used the water from the tree roots and also its leaves to decrease temperature in sick individuals.
The most beneficial properties of the Eucalyptus tree are found in its oil extract. Oil can be obtained from both the fresh and dried leaves of the tree, as well as from branch tips. The oil and the leaves were found to be a potent remedy against respiratory disorders, such as external or internal catarrhs of the respiratory tract. The oil can also reduce and treat a wide range of symptoms associated with respiratory infections and allergies, such as coughs and headaches.
In 2004 a team of German experts carried out a study in order to see if cineole compound in the Eucalytpus oil works against sinusitis. Cineole is the most active compound of the Australian tree. After being administered 200 mg of cineole three times a day for seven days, the volunteers in the study improved more than half of their symptoms since day four. The participants undergoing the experiment suffered from acute sinusitis.
Eucalyptus oil has a sweet smelling and invigorating fragrance. It can be used for massage or for hot baths in order to refresh and energize the body, to provide it with a good stamina and to stimulate the blood flow. Due to its antiseptic and anti-infective properties, the oil will also work against all kinds of wounds, skin problems or rashes and for preventing or treating infections of the body. It is also very beneficial against insects’ bites – apply diluted Eucalyptus oil on the bite or swollen area and it will disappear in no time.
Used for massage, besides the fact that it refreshes the whole body, the essential Eucalyptus oil will ease arthritis and muscle aches and pains. It is also used in all kinds of medicinal candies or cachou in order to treat cold, chest or respiratory problems. While in the mouth, the cachou will also help us prevent oral bacteria and confer us a fresh breath.
Eucalyptus oil is also a significant remedy against severer conditions such as asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, laryngitis, chest congestion etc. Pour a few drops of the tree's essential oil on a cloth or handkerchief and then breathe in through the mouth, while exhaling through the nose. Earaches will also be reduced or cured through this method of inhaling-exhaling, because the oil will open the Eustachian tubes.
Due to the fact that it is a highly potent antiseptic and also has a sweet, refreshing smell, Eucalyptus oil can be used by homemakers all around the house, for various activities. It is used as a detergent for the floor or bath tub, greasy or other difficult stains and spots, for washing the pets (especially dogs), as a clothes detergent or carpet cleaner.
Being a very powerful remedy, Eucalyptus oil should not be used by children, elders or people that suffer from chronic conditions, pregnant or breastfeeding women. Its internal use should be avoided by individuals with stomach, bowels, intestinal or biliary disorders.

Eucalyptus=Health for All (The edible perch)
Mr. Bird taught me many valuable lessons in the early ninety's. The first was appearances can be deceiving, because he was a female. Another was that she was extremely bright and I could learn from her. She taught me that eucalyptus globulus was good for birds. I used a branch of eucalyptus for her perch and was amazed to see over three feet of eucalyptus branch, chewed to six inches in less than two weeks. The over one inch thick branch was not found as sawdust on the floor. Something in this branch was necessary to her diet. An acquaintance told me her peach faced love birds were not as energetic as usual. I suggested she hang eucalyptus leaves in their cage. She did. The next morning the birds were excitedly, back to the norm. Remnants of leaves were on the floor of the cage. My vision to bring this product to market, began. Hearing about the horrendous events Barbara Gould was experiencing with her parrot farm in Mendocino County, California I called her to encourage her to continue her efforts. I have been a resident for over thirty years and know the county well. Recounting my experience with eucalyptus, she informed me that she uses eucalyptus to benefit her birds, babies and parents. I studied the chemical makeup of eucalyptus and the needs of our feathered friends. This made me more determined to share with people responsible for exotics. The benefits are too many to list. Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other substances are created in a plant with antihistamine, antibacterial, antibiotic, antifungal and antiparasitic properties. These facts are supported scientifically and medically. Eucalyptus eliminates parasites, that in itself is a preventative measure for the health of our shared environment.
The benefits are environmental to local areas where eucalyptus is harvested. Removal of the branches from the forest floor of euc is a fire suppression method. Maintaining these stands can stop its invasion into native habitat. Just as our feathered friends and other domestic animals, this plant is a nonnative species to the United States. It is time we connect the two in a venue that will be of great benefit. This is a new product available to the market. Seasoned eucalyptus is something our bird needs for health. Feel free to ask questions. I will answer them to the best of my ability. Please note that this material is collected from pristine coastal settings. I have branches of various lengths for sale. Contact me at melissaj@... or PO Box 2712, Ft. Bragg, CA 95437 for comments or questions. Sincerely,

A 'Safe Plant' per ISGA The ISGA (International Sugar Gliders Association) has designated that Eucalyptus Globulus aka Blue Gum (the only kind we grow and sell) is a "Safe Plant" for sugar gliders.
Tasmanian Government Says Eucalypts are 12% of Sugar Glider's Diet According to the Tasmanian Primary Industries and Water Department: "Sugar gliders have a sweet tooth - their diet consists of flower nectar, acacia gum, eucalypt sap and insects. One study of a Victorian population showed that individuals spent about 43% of their foraging time feeding on gum, 12% on eucalypt sap and 28% on searching for invertebrates." and that they are: "well adapted to a diet of eucalypt leaves..."

Oils "Eucalyptus oil contains substances with strong antibacterial properties. Studies in animals and test tubes also found that eucalyptus oil acts as an expectorant (loosens phlegm in the respiratory passages), antiseptic (prevents infection), and deodorant. Like eucalyptus oil, the leaves of the eucalyptus plant contain substances that have expectorant, antibacterial, and antiseptic properties, but the leaves are also believed to help reduce inflammation and reduce fevers. In fact, one study conducted in Russia found that an alcoholic tincture containing eucalyptus leaves helps relieve chronic ear infections. Many researchers believe that the beneficial effect of the eucalyptus tincture may have been due to its anti-inflammatory properties." Eucalyptus leaves contain tannins (which are believed to help reduce inflammation), flavonoids (such as quercetin which has antioxidants properties), and volatile oils

Eucalyptus as a healthy food supplement

Affinity Budgerigars and Their Affinity with Certain Eucalyptus Species. by Peter McLaren B.A.
Many bird species in Australia and elsewhere feed on the cambium sap of various trees. In northern European and American forests woodpeckers feed on the cambium sap of a number of deciduous tree species. This, however, tends to be seasonal behavior as opposed to birds that feed on evergreens - such as the eucalypts- in which cambial activity is continuous. In Australia galahs, sulfur-crested cockatoos and Major Mitchell Cockatoos all strip the mature bark of eucalypts to gain access to the cambium tissue and thus the cambium's phloem sap. The writer has observed some cockatoos returning regularly to wounds they have created in the cambium of eucalyptus trees to take advantage of the continually weeping sap that exudes from them for up to a fortnight before the tree heals.
Birds are not alone in this practice which is utilized by sugar gliders and various possums. These animals seldom ingest the bark they strip but, instead, remove it to inflict a wound that will continue to weep. In the budgerigar's case its small beak size relegates it to the smaller stems where it finds the cambial sap it seeks in the soft fresh bark
A natural Herb "The Koala bears from Australia eat them, but the humans also have used the leaves and depend on Eucalyptus more often than they realize. Eucalyptus oil and its active ingriedient eucalyptol are frequently found in the cough drops and salves you buy over the counter to treat colds and other infections(Mindell, 2000). The purpose of this web page is to inform readers more about this natural herb called eucalyptus, and what it helps as an alternative medicine."

Eucalyptus used for Toys and Perches
|
|
The Most Suitable Toys
|
"The most suitable toys for unsupervised birds include natural foods such as grass runners (eg, kikuyu, buffalo grass), various seed pods (eg, melaleuca, hakea, Eucalyptus, callistemon and especially banksia for larger cockatoos), liquid amber, pine cones, vegetables, apple cores, clumps or tufts of grass freshly sprayed with water and short lengths of soft wood with bark attached (especially if live beetle larvae or borers are present). Any natural plant materials provided to birds must not have been sprayed with pesticides, chemicals or fertilizers. Fresh-cut branches from unsprayed fruit trees or vines with the bark intact are favorite treats for birds." |
Avian Health Care Tips
"The best perches are the natural hard woods such as manzanita, ribbon wood and eucalyptus (very hard when it dries). Other woods may or may not be safe but it is best to stick to one of the three mentioned above."
- - Barton C. Huber, D.V.M. (Dr. Bart) Basic Bird Care: Avian Health Care Tips
All about Perches
Perches play a very important role in your birds overall health. Pet bird perches should be of different sizes and irregular. This aids in the exercising of the feet ensuring that muscle condition and coordination does not deteriorate due to lack of foot movement along the perches.
As a general rule your bird's feet should go 3/4 of the way around the perch but in nature the birds perch on tree limbs of varying sizes. It is recommended that you use two or more different diameter perches. Remember however, that allowing your bird to play on top of his cage or walk on the floor will also exercise his feet
Tough eucalyptus wood makes the best perch your bird could ever have! Budgies love to chew on eucalyptus branches. They provide your bird with a source of stimulation. The chewing activity keeps the bird occupied for hours on end and the eucalyptus oil inside the bark is a natural health tonic. Eucalyptus branches also provide trace elements and minerals that are beneficial to your bird’s health. In the wild, budgies are very active in the morning and evening, but spend most of their day resting in the eucalyptus trees and chewing the branches. Natural (unrefined) eucalyptus oil from the bark is also a germicide that stops diseases of the feet in all Australian birds.
"Eucalyptus branches are nontoxic and are safe to use as natural wood perches." - Gillian Willis, Vancouver, B.C. an "expert" in matters of poisoning and toxic substances
Eucs for Sugar Gliders "Be sure to put in several sized bird perches and/or eucalyptus branches for lots of exercise. " http://www.petinfo4u.com/sugar_glider.htm
