Since tea tree oil is relatively inexpensive, completely natural, and easy to research, it would appear to have a very bright future.
It has been predicted that demand for the oil will multiply 50 times during the next few years, and it is likely to feature in many natural remedies and patent medicines for home treatment. While not a cure-all, it is one of the most exciting essential oils to emerge in recent years.
RELATED ARTICLE: The "doctor" is in: recommendations on using tea tree oil
Tea tree oil is a powerful, concentrated, fast-acting, natural, broad-spectrum antiseptic and fungicide. When applied, its penetrating action may cause a temporary, warm sensation that has a soothing, analgesic effect on stings, burns, sores, infections, cuts, abrasions, and other skin irritations.
Here are some recommended applications:
* Burns: Flush immediately with cold water or pack with ice for one minute. Apply pure tea tree oil by cotton ball or by pouring directly onto the burn. Alternate cold water and tea tree oil applications for one hour. Apply twice daily for the next three to four days, if conditions require. Tea tree oil can also be safely applied to blistering burns.
* Sunburns: Dilute one part tea tree oil with 10 parts of a bland oil such as olive or coconut oil. Spread over the affected area. Repeat as desired. This treatment is soothing, relieves pain, and limits blistering and skin loss. Tea tree oil may be used full strength in severe cases.
* Pimples and Boils: Wash affected area with hot water and soap. Apply tea tree oil three to four times per day. In severe cases, a gauze pad soaked with tea tree oil may be applied to the affected area for up to 12 hours. Do not do this more than once. If the problem persists, see a doctor.
* Stings: Speed of treatment is essential. Apply tea tree oil to non-poisonous insect, spider and mosquito bites, nettle stings, poison oak, and poison ivy.
* Ringworm: Fungus infections, including athlete's foot, may respond to the application of tea tree oil. Wash and dry the affected area thoroughly, and apply a cotton ball soaked with tea tree oil, two to three times daily. Persistent cases may require the application of soaked ganze pads to the affected area for up to 12 hours. Five drops of pure oil may be added to shampoo for scalp infections. Regular use of the oil in shampoo can prevent scalp infections.
* Lice and Scabies: Wash infected area with tea tree oil. After three or four minutes, wash again with tea tree oil shampoo. Repeat daily as needed.
* Sore Throat: Mix three to four drops of tea tree oil in a glass of warm water and gargle. Honey and lemon may be added for flavor.
* Sinus and Bronchial Congestion: Inhale vapors of tea tree oil by adding a capful (5 ml) to a bowl of steaming hot water or to a vaporizer. Tea tree oil may also be rubbed on the chest and sinuses or sprinkled on a handkerchief.
* Toothache. Gum Infections and Mouth Ulcers: Apply tea tree oil directly onto the infected area. It may be mixed with clove oil for a better taste. Brush regularly with a tea tree oil toothpaste and floss daily. If the problem persists after treatment, see a dentist.

I know that tea-tree oil is excellent to cure and prevent candida. Can someone tell me how to use it for vaginal candida? Thanks

dilute the oil with warm water and use as a douche, or mix with olive oil and soak a tampon. If it is not diluted then it can be very irritating, like alcohol on an open wound

I had to add my two cents here... tea tree oil works for yeast and I like the suggestion for dilution and soaking a tampon. Also dilute with a little olive oil and soak a small rag or gauze and insert, leaving in for an hour or two. I had one mom who had persistent yeast and we tried all, including, and most important, diet, but it was stubborn. Several treatments of a peeled garlic clove inserted vaginally worked great!!

Tea tree oil is great as mentioned above but if the is a recurrent problem with thrush, it might be useful to make a few dietary changes. Limit high fat foods, limit refined carbohydrates and avoid sugar. To eat at least 8 ounces of live yoghurt/day might help too.

Is the tea tree oil ok to use while you're expecting? Of my 5 pregnancies, I've had yeast with my 2nd and my current pregnancy. I guess it's yeast; I itch like crazy. Dena

Yeah, it's okay, but are you SURE it's yeast? Some women are very sensitive to the increased vaginal discharge. I have even seen some women get a rash down the insides of their thighs. Semen can also be very irritating- this seems to be helped by a change in the mans' diet, but even that does not always cure it. Try a sitz bath with epsom salts or a poultice of bentonite clay ON your yoni, not in it.

When I was pregnant I got candida. I used the anti-mycotic(how do you say that in English?) cream which my physician prescribed. It helped initially, but the candida kept re-occuring. As I felt very uneasy using that cream, I tried to find other ways of curing it. I tried tea-trea-oil, but it didn't work for me. I inserted garlic-cloves (secured with a little thread) - it wouldn't help either. I was real desperate because of the itching, when my mother's friend adviced me to try yoghurt - internally. She said I should dip a small tampon in good, natural yoghurt and quickly insert it (before the tampon swells up from the yoghurt). I inserted a tampon once a day before I went to bed in the evening and removed it in the morning. It took about a week for the candida to go. After that I used yoghurt anytime I felt candida approaching. I found out that it works best if used immediately when the first symptoms occur. Some friends of mine tried it, too. It could cure those with candida in the initial stages, but it could not help everybody with advanced candida, although some.
Another good candida medicine is grape-fruit-kernel-extract. It cured the terrible candida I had around my nipples when breast-feeding. Just mix a few drops of it with some cream or oil and apply it once or twice a day. It's not toxic, so you don't need to worry about the baby drinking. (By the way, when there is candida on the nipples, the baby's mouth has to be checked/treated as well.) I've heard, some people use grape-fruit-kernel-extract (strongly diluted, of course)successfully against vaginal candida as well. I've never tried myself, but I think it could be worth trying.
Blessings Nina

my favorite remedy for yeast is acidophilus, you can insert a capsule once or twice a day, or take one orally with one inserted vaginally, not very messy at all!

For virulent cases of yeast-beasties, Rosemary Gladstar suggests two double-O capsules of boric acid powder. You can find the powder at any pharmacy, and the gelatin caps at a natural foods store.
She says to insert them high into the vaginal vault at night time, for five nights. Some women are sensitive to this, but none of the women I have suggested this to have been, and I'm not.
I like to combine this with lots of yogurt (organic, plain) in and on the vagina, they seem to balance each other out well. The boric acid gets rid of the bad kooties, and the yogurt gives the good ones!
Just a note of caution, wear a pad in the morning 'cause there's a whole lot of dripping that happens!
One more thing, really watch your diet if you're susceptible to yeast. Yeast LOVES sugar, cut way down (or out) on sugary stuff. Also avoid the white flours/grains and go whole grains.
Good luck, Raven |

I haven't heard to not use it during pregnancy, and have known women to use it and not have a problem. What is the reason for the caution, I wonder? Perhaps because vaginal tissues are more sensitive? Or I wonder if it could possibly end up causing deterioration of the mucous plug?
Do let me know what you find, I'd be interested in knowing.

I was told by the gynecologist selling the Boric Acid suppositories not to use them while pregnant. I haven't been able to find out exactly why, but while searching on the internet I found conflicting advice as follows:
quote:
Suppository boric acid capsules should not be used during pregnancy.
quote:
The Boric Acid is a powder and frequently is less messy than the creams. It is safe for use in pregnancy.
quote:
Boric acid is a good antifungal, particularly for non-Candida yeast species. Stubborn vaginal yeast infections are sometimes treated with capsules of 100% boric acid, if the standard treatments for the "usual" yeast, Candida sp., is not effective. It appears that the body can tolerate the absorption of boric acid somewhat, with the kidneys efficiently ridding the body of small loads. The major risk of overdose appears to be kidney damage. It is not recommended during pregnancy, as it appears to cause birth defects in the offspring of rats fed high doses. (My bold and underline.)
Primarily the websites I looked at said vaginal suppository Boric Acid should not be used, but did not state why. Or else there was a lot of research on rats and mice regarding bleeding and pregnancy loss, or birth defects, as above.
Obviously it's not always, if ever, a problem in humans, because people have used it with no adverse effects. I guess it's just being cautious because of what it "could" do. Anyway, I chose not to use it.
I was prescribed it for a yeast infection, which turned out to be bacterial vaginitis (which can cause premature rupture of the membranes). For that I was prescribed MetroGel (which apparently can also cause premature rupture of the membranes!). I ended up putting a clove of garlic in my vagina each night for a week, which worked magically. |
