Ingredients: Frozen cabbage leaf
Instructions: When you buy a cabbage do not throw the outer leaves away, instead put them in a zip lock bag
and store them in the freezer. Once the pain of the gout starts, apply a frozen cabbage leaf to the area and cover with a dry towel. Leave in place until the leaf thaws out and repeat. There is an enzymes in the cabbage that draws out the chrystals around the affected area.

Hello,
For the gout, try placing a frozen cabbage leaf on the swollen area. The cabbage contains an emzyme that draws out the chrystal that form around the affected joint. It has to be frozen to work, cover with a towel. Repeat often.

Natural Remedies # 10 - GOUT

Gout Remedies Prepared at Home by T. Olgun

Gout (PODAGRA):  Gout is a painful disease, which is caused by the buildup of the uric acid crystals around the joints.  Usually the big toe is affected the most from the gout attacks that cause pain, inflammation and swelling.  Treatment is possible with medications and some changes in diet.  Common causes of the gout can be; genetic, high alcohol consumption, obesity, some high blood pressure treatment medications, some kinds of kidney diseases that may cause high uric acid levels in blood.  Foods high in purines (substances found in the foods which cause high uric acid levels in blood when broken down) should be avoided.  These foods are shellfish, scallops, red meat, liver, kidney, tongue, sweetbreads, peas, lentil, and beans.   As always, the natural solutions worth a trial are available for those who are seeking them.  The most common couple of home remedies that can provide relief are listed below.  Check them and use the one that suits you best.

The first remedy is using the outer leaves of the cabbage.  Don’t throw away the outer leaves of the cabbage.  Put them in a plastic bag, wrap well and keep in the freezer.  When the gout attack comes, take it off the fridge, place over the affected area and wrap a towel over it.  Keep it on until the cabbage leaf loses its cold.  This can be repeated as many times as needed.

The second remedy is the black cherry drink.  The chemistry of the black cherry balances the uric acid level in the blood and provides relief.  Black cherry juice can be found in supermarkets or health stores.  A 32 oz bottle should be enough for relief.  People who use this remedy are really satisfied with the results.

The third remedy is again the black cherry remedy.  This time, you can try taking six black cherries in the morning before breakfast and repeat it again before going to bed.  Cherries should be cold so leave them in the refrigerator.  This remedy can be tried as long as you desire.  It is to your benefit to turn it into a dietary habit if you are a long- term gout sufferer.  Practicing this mini addition to the diet can extend the gout attack intervals and help you enjoy painless and worry-free days.

Cherry Flower

Latin: Flos Prunus avium

Origin:
Cherry refers to any of various trees belonging to species of Prunus and their edible fruits, of the family Rosaceae. Most cherry species are native to western Asia and eastern Europe, from the Caspian Sea to the Balkans, where they are widely grown. Cherries had spread throughout Europe, however, before agricultural history was recorded. Some 10 to 12 species are recognized in North America and a similar number in Europe. The greatest concentration of species, however, appears to be in eastern Asia.

Cherries are grown in all areas of the world where winter temperatures are not too severe and where summer temperatures are moderate. We can thank cherry-loving birds for the widespread distribution of the trees. They require winter cold in order to blossom in spring. The trees bloom quite early in the spring, just after peaches and earlier than apples.

Three types of cherry are mainly grown for their fruit. These are the sweet or wild cherries, Prunus avium L.; the sour, or tart, cherries, Prunus cerasus L.; and, grown to a much smaller extent, the duke cherries, Prunus x gondouinii (Poit.& Turpin.) Schneid., which are crosses of sweet and sour cherries.

Sweet-cherry trees are large and rather upright, attaining heights up to 18 m and about 7 m wide. It is in flower from April to May, and the seeds ripen from July to August. Cherry trees are recognized by their lovely white blossoms in early spring. The flowers foretell the end of winter, and so symbolize rebirth, youth, and innocence in countries such as China and Japan. The flowers are hermaphrodite (have both male and female organs) and are pollinated by bees. The tree can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires moist soil.

Sweet cherry fruit is generally heart-shaped to nearly globular, about 2 cm in diameter and contains one large seed. The acid content of the sweet cherry is low. The fruit varies in color, including the deep-burgundy colored Bing, Lambert, and Tartarian, common in the United States, and the yellow varieties, usually blushed with red, called Royal Ann, Rainier, or Napoleon. Royal Ann cherries are the ones specially processed, dyed red, and sold as maraschino cherries. Other sweet cherry varieties include the Bigaroon and Gean.

The higher acid content of the sour cherry produces its characteristic tart flavor. Sour-cherry trees are smaller, rarely over 5 m in height. The fruit is round to oblate in shape, generally dark red in color, and it has so much acid that it is not appealing for eating fresh. Sour varieties, favored for use in pies and preserves, include the brilliant red Montmorency and the smaller Morello.

The duke cherries are intermediate in both tree and fruit characteristics.

The U.S. is the leading cherry producer, with an annual crop of 230,000 metric tons. Cherries are a major crop in western Europe, however; total production is about 700,000 tons annually, with Germany, Italy, France, and Switzerland the leaders. Turkey, Japan, Argentina, Chile, Australia, and Canada also produce substantial quantities.

About three-quarters of the U.S. production is sour cherries, which are frozen or canned and used in sauces and pastries, notably cherry pie. Sweet cherries, in season, are consumed fresh and widely canned and are the principal type preserved in true or imitation maraschino liquor. In Europe the fruit is used fresh, canned, or for wine.

The wood of a number of cherry species is close grained, dark red in color, and especially esteemed for the manufacture of fine furniture.

In the Orient, particularly Japan, cherry varieties have been selected for the beauty of their flowers; most of them do not set fruit. These beautiful ornamentals are featured in many gardens and after about 1900 were widely disseminated throughout the moderate-temperature areas of North America and Europe. The Japanese flowering cherries around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C., were presented by the mayor of Tokyo in 1912.

Properties:
Sweet in flavor, warm in nature, it is related to the spleen channel.

Functions:
Benefits qi (energy) and spleen, relieves rheumatism.

Applications:
Cherry is used for paralysis, rheumatism, gout, numbness, frosbite.

The seed of the cherry fruit is used in traditional Chinese medicine for bursting of measles for children.

Dosage and Administration:
Cherry flowers are decocted as tea for drinking;

cherry leaves are crushed and mixed with liquor for topical application on areas of snake or insect bites.

Cautions on Use:
Although no specific mention has been seen for this species, it belongs to a genus where most, if not all members of the genus produce hydrogen cyanide, a poison that gives almonds their characteristic flavor. This toxin is found mainly in the leaves and seed and is readily detected by its bitter taste. It is usually present in too small a quantity to do any harm but any very bitter seed or fruit should not be eaten. In small quantities, hydrogen cyanide has been shown to stimulate respiration and improve digestion, it is also claimed to be of benefit in the treatment of cancer. In excess, however, it can cause respiratory failure and even death.

Reference Materials:

Toxic or Side Effects:

Modern Researches:
The fruits of all varieties of cherry provide vitamin A and small amounts of such minerals as calcium and phosphorus. It also contains about 78 percent water, 8.5-14 percent sugars.

The fruit stalks are astringent, diuretic and tonic. A decoction is used in the treatment of cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder), oedema, bronchial complaints, looseness of the bowels and anaemia (too few red blood cells in the bloodstream).

An aromatic resin can be obtained by making small incisions in the trunk. This has been used as an inhalant in the treatment of persistent coughs.

According to a 1950 study of 12 people with gout, eating about 227 g of cherries or drinking an equivalent amount of cherry juice prevented attacks of gout. Black, sweet yellow, and red sour cherries were all effective. Since that study, there have been many anecdotal reports of cherry juice as an effective treatment for the pain and inflammation of gout. The active ingredient in cherry juice remains unknown.

A green dye can be obtained from the leaves.

A dark grey to green dye can be obtained from the fruit.

The bark usually only contains small amounts of tannin, but this sometimes rises to 16 percent.

The wood of cherry tree is reddish brown in color. It is firm, compact, with satiny grain; and is used for turnery, furniture, veneers, decorative panelling and instruments. It is also good firewood with fragrance of blossom as it burns.

Chef Shadows, in case of a gout attack, make a tea from stinging nettle, either fresh or dried and take it a couple of times a day, besides drinking a lot of water to flush out the uric acid. To prepare it, simply steep the leaves in boiling water for 5 minutes, then drink both juice and the leaves.

Tart black or red cherry juice will help a great deal. Look into common causes of gout too. Red meat is a big culprit, as are peanuts and some kinds of fish. During an attack you will need to avoid them. Prescription for Natural Healing is a good reference book for this and many other things. Hope you feel better soon!

Here's a good, simple article that should answer your question.

(BY THE WAY, I WOULD NOT PERSONALLY RECOMMEND WHITE FLOUR OR STRIPPED WHITE RICE!-"Cheyenne Cin")

I know of no scientific basis for this but here is my gout story/"cure".

Back in the 60s, my mom was the nurse for the smartest old doctor I ever knew, Dr. Gilbert Micklethwaite. A very good man, graduate of Johns-Hopkins Medical School and he was huge -- 6-2 and about 320 pounds.

Doc had gout really bad in his sunset years and for relief, he went on straight white rice diets (no butter or sugar in it) and drank red table wine for a month or so at a time. He said it helped him a lot.

That's my 2-cents worth! I hope it helps you too!

pat, the old bone man.

Oh, yeah..... you might also try one of Doc Blevins' (not a real doctor) Hot Toddies which he always claimed would cure anything:

Doc Blevins’ Hot Toddy

Old "Doc" Blevins, a nefarious crusty character from my youth (but a great fellow!) had a cure for "everything". Doc had little education but was very shrewd -- never worked a day in his life to my knowledge, living mostly from gambling, bootlegging, and chicken fighting bets, and, he picked up the "Doc" appellation for his famous Hot Toddy. People came from all around when they were sick with the cold or flu for Doc to "cure" their ailment. He told me how he made it and it's a doozey:

2 oz. American (cheap) blended whiskey
(Doc used Kessler’s or Corby’s)
1 oz. boiling water
1 teaspoon sugar (I also would not recommend white stripped refined sugar!-"Cheyenne Cin")
½ teaspoon castor oil

stir and drink down.

Everything "natural" I have come across thus far seems to indicate eating cherries, cherries, cherries, and more cherries

===========
I concur that cherry juice (or eating fresh cherried in season) does seem to help.

come summer, use the fresh leaves to make tea but be sure to dry a lot of leaves and have them handy when the need arises. I can assure you that it works like magic at least for my DH!! You can also lightly blanch them and make a salad or add them to your vegetable pies. IMO cherries, cranberries and all berries are good as a preventive measure but once you get that nasty attack, you will have to let it work itself out by taking nettles and drinking plenty of water or as a last resort, pills prescribed by your good doctor.
My brother declares that drinking lots of water will ease the pain and even stop the bouts of gout...Cheap, at any rate! Love, Molly.

==
My friends husband cured his gout by drinking lots of cherry juice and eating cherries whenever possible.

REMEMBER THAT YOUNG CHERRY LEAVES DO CONTAIN CYANIDE OR LAETRILE, B-17, and too much is poisonous! Also, older cherry leaves are not recommended, so the ones sprouting out NOW would be better than late summer leaves!-"Cheyenne Cin" - P.S. Apparently CHERRY STEMS are good to use against uric acid or gout, too.

For a lot of people, it's combinations that cause trouble. As for instance, eating peanuts and having beef roast in the same day. Or having some kinds of fish two or three times close together. As to nettles, you can find them as tea or as capsules, or even as extracts. Any of them should help, but I do know that TART black cherry or TART red cherry juice is also very helpful, in that the juices dissolve the crystals that are lodging in that joint, as does the nettle. So any and all should help, without side effects, to the best of my info. As to topicals, my dad used to get relief from using arnica montana gel, although he couldn't be persuaded to stop eating hard cheddar cheese, which was a trigger for him. icon_smile.gif
Hope you're better soon!
