FDA Issues Warning About Chinese Toothpaste Eyewitness News

(06/01/07 -- WASHINGTON) - A poisonous chemical found in Chinese
manufactured toopaste has prompted a warning from the FDA.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to consumers
Friday to avoid using toothpaste labeled as made in China.
The administration also issued an import alert to prevent the
toothpaste containing the poisonous chemical diethylene glycol (DEG)
from entering the United States.

DEG is used in antifreeze and as a solvent.

Consumers are encouraged to throw the product away. The chemical is
also known as diglycol or diglycol stearate.

So far there are no known U.S. reports of poisonings from toothpaste
containing the chemical. Potential risks from exposure to DEG are most
likely in children and individuals with kidney or liver disease.
