Behind the Cell Curve: Why Is the president Ignoring a Scientific Gift?

By Kathleen Parker

http://www.JewishWorldReview.com |

As he lifted the ban on federal funding for embryonic stem cell research Monday, President Obama proclaimed that scientific decisions now will be made "on facts, not ideology."

This sounds good, but what if there were other non-ideological facts that Obama seems to be ignoring? One fact is that since Obama began running for president, researchers have made some rather amazing strides in alternative stem cell research. Science and ethics finally fell in love, in other words, and Obama seems to have fallen asleep during the kiss. Either that, or he decided that keeping an old political promise was more important than acknowledging new developments. In the process, he missed an opportunity to prove that he is pro-science but also sensitive to the concerns of taxpayers who don't want to pay for research that requires embryo destruction.

Unfortunately, the stem cell debate has been characterized as a conflict between science (as though science is always right) and religious "kooks" (as though religious folk are never right). In choosing sides, it is, indeed, easier to imagine lunch with a researcher who wants to resurrect Christopher Reeve (whom Obama couldn't resist mentioning) and make him walk again, than with the corner protester holding a fetus in a jar.

Moreover, as Obama said, the majority of Americans have reached a consensus that we should pursue this research. Polling confirms as much, but most Americans, including most journalists and politicians, aren't fluent in stem cell research. It's complicated. If people "know" anything, it is that embryonic stem cells can cure diseases and that all stem cells come from fertility clinic embryos that will be discarded anyway. Neither belief is entirely true.

In fact, every single one of the successes in treating patients with stem cells thus far — for spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis, for example — have involved adult or umbilical cord blood stem cells, not embryonic stem cells. And though federal dollars still won't directly fund embryo destruction, federally funded researchers can obtain embryos privately created only for experimentation. Thus, taxpayers now are incentivizing a market for embryo creation and destruction.

The insistence on using embryonic stem cells always rested on the argument that they were pluripotent, capable of becoming any kind of cell. That superior claim no longer can be made with the spectacular discovery in 2007 of "induced pluripotent stem cells" (iPSs), which was the laboratory equivalent of the airplane. Very simply, iPS cells can be produced from skin cells by injecting genes that force the cells to revert to their primitive "blank slate" form with all the same pluripotent capabilities of embryonic stem cells.

But "induced pluripotent stem cells" doesn't trip easily off the tongue, nor have any celebrities stepped forward to expound their virtues. (If only Angelina Jolie would purse those pouty lips and say "pluripotent.") Even without such drama, Time magazine named iPS innovation No. 1 on its "Top 10 Scientific Discoveries" of 2007, and the journal Science rated it the No. 1 breakthrough of 2008.

The iPS discovery even prompted Ian Wilmut, who led the team that cloned Dolly the sheep, to abandon his license to attempt human cloning, saying that the researchers "may have achieved what no politician could: an end to the embryonic stem cell debate." And, just several days ago, Dr. Bernadine Healy, director of the National Institutes of Health under the first President Bush, wrote in U.S. News & World Report that these recent developments "reinforced the notion that embryonic stem cells . . . are obsolete."

Many scientists, of course, want to conduct embryonic stem cell research, as they have and always could with private funding. One may agree or disagree with their purposes, but one may also question why taxpayers should have to fund something so ethically charged when alternative methods are available.

Next comes a move to lift the unfortunately named Dickey-Wicker amendment in Congress, which prohibits using tax dollars to create human embryos for research purposes. If the amendment is rescinded, human embryos can be created and destroyed with federal tax dollars.

Good people can disagree on these things, but those who insist that this is "only about abortion" miss the point. The objectification of human life is never a trivial matter. And determining what role government plays in that objectification may be the ethical dilemma of the century.

In this case, science handed Obama a gift — and he sent it back.

California Porn Producers Plead Guilty

A California couple pleaded guilty today to violating federal obscenity laws for making and distributing sexually explicit films that depicted rape and murder, The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported.

Robert Zicari, Janet Romano and their company, Extreme Associates, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Gary L. Lancaster to one count each of conspiracy to distribute obscene materials.

A federal grand jury indicted the couple in August 2003. In January 2005, Lancaster dismissed the case. The 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned Lancaster's decision in December 2005 and sent the case back to him.

"We are encouraged this case is coming to a close, but saddened it took more than five years for Americans to get justice," said Daniel Weiss, senior analyst for media and sexuality at Focus on the Family Action.

"We remain hopeful the legal push against obscene pornography will continue under Attorney General Eric Holder's watch. Violent and cruel sex acts perpetrated against women have no place in American society."

Online Gambling Increases while Casinos Struggle

The economic downturn is affecting casinos, but not online wagering. The Las Vegas Strip saw a 15 percent decline in gambling revenue in January. And betting proceeds in Atlantic City reportedly were down 19 percent last month.

But online gambling revenue is up --- surpassing $20 billion in 2008. And that has pro-family leaders concerned.

"It's amazing, because people are worried because the markets are doing so badly, except they put their money into something that gives even less return, things like Internet gambling and state lotteries," said Tom McClusky, senior vice president of the Family Research Council.

Tom Grey, national spokesman for Stop Predatory Gambling, called online gambling the most addictive form.

Are 'Hope' And 'Change' Still Tax-Deductible?
By Ann Coulter

Are you sitting down? Obama plans to pay for his $3.6 trillion-dollar spending bill by raising taxes on "the rich." I know, I know ... I was pretty shocked, too.

The bad news is, by hiking taxes in a recession, Obama will turn a disaster into a catastrophe. But there's good news, too. The "rich" include most of Obama's biggest supporters.

While liberals love being praised for their looks, their style, their brilliance and their courage, the one quality they don't want talked about is their money. To the contrary, democrats are constantly boasting about how poor they are -- as if that's a virtue in a capitalist society with no class barriers.

No matter how much money they have, liberals will be damned if they're giving up the poor's mantle of angry self-righteousness. This is especially true if their wealth came by inheritance, marriage or the taxpayer, the preferred sources of income for Liberalus Americanus.

Democrats' claims of poverty merely serve to show how out of touch elected Democrats are with actual incomes in America.

Good News! Saudi Sympathizer Bites The Dust

Barack Obama has lost yet another one of his top nominees, and this one is a real cause for celebration for anyone who cares about our national security. Charles W. Freeman withdrew his name from consideration to head the National Intelligence Council, the government body that prepares U.S. intelligence estimates. Freeman called it quits after his ties with Saudi Arabia and communist China became public. Freeman had led the Middle East Policy Council, a Saudi-funded, anti-Israel so-called “think tank.” He had publicly blamed our alliance with Israel as the cause of the 9/11 attacks. He also defended China after the Tianamen Square massacre of pro-democracy dissidents in 1989, suggesting that the Chinese communists were guilty only of “overly cautious behavior.”

I’m proud to tell you that we did everything we could to expose his anti-Israel record and his “love affair” with the Saudi royal family and other despotic regimes. I have talked with many members of Congress about this nomination. Today we celebrate the fact that Freeman will not take this sensitive post at a time when our country faces grave dangers.

Jihad In America

Today’s Washington Post carries a chilling report on the front page that should be required reading for every politician on Capitol Hill. Last year, Shirwa Ahmed blew himself up in a homicide bombing in Somalia. What distinguishes Ahmed from other jihadists is that he was a 27-year old college student from Minneapolis and a naturalized American citizen. (Minneapolis has a large Somali Muslim population. In 2006, the region elected the first Muslim to Congress.) Ahmed’s unusual path to martyrdom got the attention of American counterterrorism officials, who now report that more than a dozen Somali American youths have disappeared so far this year. Concerned about the radicalization of Muslim youths in America, the FBI is running active investigations in at least five major American cities.

Muslim activists in Minneapolis are trying to blame the radicalization on poverty and unemployment. But two missing 19-year olds had been studying medicine and engineering at the University of Minnesota. And, as the Post reports, “…they became antisocial, speaking and eating less as they grew more devout.”

Today’s report is just another reminder of the nature of our Islamofascist enemy. No one worries when a Jew, an evangelical, a Catholic, a Mormon or a Buddhist becomes more “devout.” And while we occasionally hear news about jihadist terrorism in Iraq or Afghanistan, we cannot afford to lower our guard when it comes to threats here at home. Unfortunately, there has been disturbing news in recent days suggesting that the Obama Administration intends to cut back on enforcement of our immigration laws. I hope today’s report will force some in government to rethink that view. Meanwhile, we will continue to work with members of Congress who recognize the dangers and who are committed to strengthening our homeland security.

Secret Ballot “Absolutely Necessary”

Yesterday, I told you about the top priority of Big Labor – the Employee Free Choice Act or “Card Check.” The problem with “Card Check” is that it takes away workers’ fundamental right to a secret ballot election on the issue of unionizing their workplace. It would also have devastating economic consequences, which is why investors like Warren Buffett oppose it. Rep. George Miller (D-CA) is the sponsor of the “Card Check” legislation, but in 2001, Rep. Miller wrote the following:

“As members of Congress of the United States who are deeply concerned with international labor standards … we are writing to encourage you to use the secret ballot in all union recognition elections. We understand that the secret ballot is allowed for, but not required… However, we feel that the secret ballot is absolutely necessary in order to ensure that workers are not intimidated voting for a union they might not otherwise choose.”

That letter by Rep. Miller was signed by 15 fellow “progressives,” including Barney Frank (D-MA) and Bernie Sanders (Socialist – VT). It wasn’t addressed to George W. Bush, but to the Mexican government! If the secret ballot is “absolutely necessary” for Mexican workers, why do “progressives” think it is not necessary for American workers? The hypocrisy is breathtaking! But it is another indication of the Left’s totalitarian impulse to force its radical agenda on the American people.

In response to MEMRI TV's February 1, 2009 release of a translated and subtitled clip capturing prominent Sunni sheikh Yousef Al-Qaradhawi on Al-Jazeera TV in January 2009 calling the Holocaust "divine punishment" for the Jews and warning that "Allah willing, the next time will be at the hand of the believers [i.e. Muslims],"(1) and also saying that he would "shoot Allah's enemies, the Jews,"(2) it was reported that Muslim Imams and Islamic groups in Scandinavia have distanced themselves from the remarks and are questioning association with Al-Qaradhawi.

Media outlets and blogs worldwide reported on MEMRI's publication of Al-Qaradhawi's statements and on reactions to them.

The following are the latest developments in the controversy.

Aftenposten: Islamic Council of Norway Head Says Council Will Raise Matter with Al-Qaradhawi's European Council for Fatwa and Research

On February 16, the Norwegian newspapers Dagbladet and Aftenpost reported that the Islamic Council of Norway had, on that same date, denounced Sheikh Al-Qaradhawi's statements on Al-Jazeera TV as "unacceptable."(3)

According to the German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur (DPE), Aftenposten quoted Islamic Council of Norway head Senaid Kobilica as saying that the council also planned to raise the matter with the European Council for Fatwa and Research, which Al-Qaradhawi heads.

Dagbladet quoted Kobilica as saying, "If it's [like this] that Yusuf Al-Qaradhawi honors the Holocaust, I think it's unacceptable from somebody who is an important religious reference for many Muslims. The Islamic Council of Norway will take up this issue with other scholars who sit in the European Council for Fatwa and Research."

He added, "We let nobody dictate how we Muslims should [live] here in Europe. The statement hurts and provokes me."

Council Head Tells Dagbladet: "My Father-In-Law Was In a Concentration Camp in Bosnia... We Had Massacres..."

The paper said that Kobilica had conveyed a protest and hopes that it produces results. "I contacted a member of the council, Bosnia's chief Mufti, who will take up the issue in the next meeting of the council. I hope he'll report that this is a completely unacceptable statement," it reported him as saying.

According to Dagbladet, Kobilica, as a Bosnian Muslim, has experienced war, and quoted him as saying, "My father-in-law was in a concentration camp in Bosnia in the 90s. We had massacres with several thousand people in the city of Srebrenica. Therefore we know how sad it is when somebody supports mass murder."

Council Head: People Who Come to Europe, Such As Al- Qaradawi, Must Watch How They Express Themselves; Norway Council Doesn't Always Follow European Fatwas Such As Death For Homosexuals

Dagbladet also stated that, according to Kobilica, people who come to Europe, such as the Egyptian-born Sunni Muslim Al-Qaradawi, must watch how they express themselves and use dialogue instead of attacking in debates. Kobilica explained how the Islamic Council of Norway doesn't always follow fatwas from the European Fatwa Council, for example, the council's wish for a death sentence for homosexuals. "We strongly reject that. Everybody has a right to live life in freedom and peace... As Norwegian Muslims, we want to show a different openness," he said.

Danish Imam: I Don't Support Al-Qaradhawi's View; It Can't Be Justified By Gaza Debate

DPE reported, also on February 16, that other Islamic leaders in Scandinavia had also distanced themselves from Al-Qaradhawi's comments, including Danish Imam Abdul Wahid Pedersen. It said that Pederson had told the Danish news agency Ritzau that he did not support Al-Qaradhawi's view and that this view could not be justified by the debate on the recent Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

Dagens Nyheter: Swedish Muslim Council Chairman Says European Muslims Look Up To Al-Qaradhawi – But Want Nothing To Do With These Statements

On February 16, 2009, the Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported that Swedish and Norwegian Muslims were distancing themselves from Sheikh Al-Qaradhawi. The paper said that Swedish Muslim Council chairman Mahmoud Aldebe said that it was a sensitive question when many European Muslims look up to Al-Qaradhawi as a person but want nothing to do with these statements, and that Muslims can see the difference between Jews as a people and Israel as a state.

Endnotes:
(1) "Throughout history, Allah has imposed upon the [Jews] people who would punish them for their corruption. The last punishment was carried out by Hitler. By means of all the things he did to them – even though they exaggerated this issue – he managed to put them in their place. This was divine punishment for them. Allah willing, the next time will be at the hand of the believers." (Al-Jazeera TV, January 30, 2009)
(2) "To conclude my speech, I’d like to say that the only thing I hope for is that as my life approaches its end, Allah will give me an opportunity to go to the land of Jihad and resistance, even if in a wheelchair. I will shoot Allah’s enemies, the Jews, and they will throw a bomb at me, and thus, I will seal my life with martyrdom. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. Allah’s mercy and blessings upon you." Radicalization in hizbullah's Positions Following the Gaza War: hizbullah Must Be Independent of All State Institutions; 'hizbullah Will Absorb All the Political Forces in the Country'

By: H. Varulkar*

Lebanon/Hizbullah | 504| March 11, 2009

Introduction

Recently, and in particular since the end of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, Hizbullah has radicalized its positions on the question of its weapons. This trend was heralded by statements made during the war by Hizbullah secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah and his deputy Na'im Qasim, who declared that the Gaza war had settled the debate in Lebanon over the necessary "defense strategies," that is, over the future of Hizbullah as a Lebanese resistance movement and over the question of disarming it. Since the war's end, Hizbullah leaders have been repeatedly emphasizing that there is no place for any discussion of dismantling it as a resistance movement, or of disarming it, and that Lebanon's future defense strategy will necessarily be anchored in the resistance movement. Senior Hizbullah official Mahmoud Qamati even announced explicitly that on no account would Hizbullah agree to subordinate itself to the Lebanese government, to its officials, or to state institutions.

The national dialogue sessions, devoted to "Lebanon's defense strategies," and in essence to the future of Hizbullah as a resistance movement, as well as to the dispute over its weapons, began September 16, 2008, in accordance with the May 2008 Doha agreement; so far five sessions have been held. During the sessions, the participants discussed Lebanon's defense strategy. It should be noted that, as early as 2006, a national dialogue took place in Lebanon with the participation of all the large Lebanese factions and parties. The dialogue, which began March 2006 and continued for several months, was devoted to such contentious issues as the  Palestinian weapons in Lebanon, the Shab'a Farms, Lebanon's relations with Syria, and the investigation of and tribunal for the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq Al-Hariri. However, about a week before the session on "Lebanon's Defense Strategy," at which Hizbullah's weapons were to be discussed, Hizbullah kidnapped the two Israeli soldiers, triggering the 2006 war, and the session was cancelled.(1)

A. Hizbullah Leaders During the Gaza War: The War Will Impact Lebanon and Its Defense Strategy

Nasrallah: The Debate on Lebanon's Defense Strategy Is Settled

In a speech delivered January 7, 2009, during the Gaza war, Hizbullah secretary-general Hassan Nasrallah stated: "Our experience in the July 2006 war [in Lebanon], and the experience of the Palestinian resistance in Gaza... have settled... all the arguments on Lebanon's [required] defense... Indeed, the formidable [Israeli] army – one of the strongest armies in the world and with the best air force in the region – has been unable to achieve its objectives in combating the resistance, [because the latter – though it has] limited resources and is besieged within a narrow geographical region, is endowed with strong faith and will. This proves that armed popular resistance, anchored in faith, determination, and popular support, is the strongest and best option for confronting the cruelest army in the world..."(2)

On January 13, 2009, Hizbullah's faction in the Lebanese Parliament, the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, held its weekly meeting, during which it issued an announcement that stated: "Gaza's steadfast endurance in the last 18 days, despite the siege and the meager resources at its disposal, in the face of the cruelest and most destructive war in the history of the region, is unambiguous proof that resistance is the best and most effective option for defending the land and safeguarding the national identity and honor."(3)

Na'im Qasim: The Gaza War Will Impact Lebanon's Defense Strategy

Hizbullah deputy secretary-general Sheikh Na'im Qasim stated, at a Hizbullah-organized symposium at the law faculty of the Al-Hadath campus of Lebanese University: "The results [of the Gaza war] will impact Lebanon and the [entire] region, since the issues are interrelated. The aggression against Gaza underscores the importance of Lebanon's strength – which is anchored in its resistance, people, and army – and will impact Lebanon's defense strategy [by tipping the scales] in favor of resistance. Gaza managed to withstand the Israeli aggression thanks to its resistance, [and this resistance] will triumph, as the future will prove."

Qasim continued: "Today, we live in the era of the resistance, and there is no turning back..."(4)

B. In the Wake of the Gaza War: Escalation in Hizbullah's Position in the Debate Over Its Weapons

As mentioned above, since the end of the Gaza war, Hizbullah's leaders have radicalized their positions regarding the future of the organization and its weapons. This is reflected in their insistence on three fundamental principles:

1.  Any defense strategy must be anchored in resistance.

2. Hizbullah will not relinquish its weapons.

3.   Hizbullah will continue making decisions independently and will be established as independent of the  state institutions.

1. The Resistance Movement is the Basis of Lebanon's Defense Strategy; "Hizbullah Will Absorb All the Political Forces in the Country"

Hassan Fadhlallah, member of the Loyalty to the Resistance bloc, said: "Any Lebanese defense strategy must be based upon resistance that is strong and capable, and possesses the [necessary] resources in order to defeat the Israeli army on every level." He added: "In the wake of the aggression against Gaza, the resistance is even more convinced that the only viable option for the Lebanese is to intensify their resistance [efforts], in which all [factions] must participate. In the dialogue [on Lebanon's defense strategy], we will listen to ideas and proposals and remain open to suggestions. [However,] we hold consistent and well-founded beliefs that are based on... our experience in previous years..."

Fadhlallah added: "After what happened in Gaza, no one has any grounds to question the effectiveness, importance, or necessity of the resistance..."(5)

Hizbullah Leaders: "We Will Strive to Incorporate All Political Forces in the Resistance"

The March 14 Forces have contended for a long time that a possible solution to the question of Hizbullah and its arms would be to incorporate them into the Lebanese military. Druze leader Walid Jumblatt, for example, said that following the signing of the Doha agreement, Hizbullah should be absorbed by the Lebanese state.(6) At a national dialogue session, March 14 Forces member Boutrus Harb proposed dismantling Hizbullah's military arm and establishing a national border guard that would be directly subordinate to the Lebanese army, and incorporating Hizbullah militants into it. He also suggested that Hizbullah's weapons be handed over to the Lebanese army.(7)

Since the end of the Gaza war, Hizbullah leaders have begun to entertain the opposite possibility, that is, instead of being incorporated into the military and state institutions, "Hizbullah will absorb all the political forces in the country." For example, Hizbullah Foreign Relations Bureau head Sayyed Nawaf Al-Moussawi stated: "When [during the Gaza war] it became clear that the defeatist Arab [countries] and the hypocritical Western governments were helpless and engaged in conspiracies, [it became equally clear] that, apart from the resistance and its weapons, there was no mechanism for defending [the country]. Today, more than ever, we insist that these weapons be preserved and reinforced. Moreover, we will strive to gradually absorb the political forces [in Lebanon] under the aegis of the resistance movement."(8)

"Defense Strategy" Must Be Replaced by "Resistance Strategy"

Sheikh Nabil Qaouq, a Hizbullah official in South Lebanon, stated that the organization strove to involve all the Lebanese political forces in the resistance, and coined the term "resistance strategy" – as opposed to "defense strategy" – for this concept. He said: "Today we are witnessing another success of the resistance strategy, and the nation has been increasingly embracing this concept." He emphasized that "a new [situation] has emerged, which will determine the future of the region in such a way that no superpower or formidable force will ever again [be able to] ignore the power of the resistance."

Qaouq added, "Hizbullah is eager to absorb all the political forces and factions in Lebanon [and involve them in implementing] the strategy of resistance... This [new situation], which has [emerged] in the wake of the Gaza events, will shift [the focus in the intra-Lebanese] dialogue from the issue of disarming Hizbullah to that of [inculcating] the resistance strategy among the Lebanese people and in all the countries in the region."(9)

2. As Long As Blood Flows in Our Veins, We Will Not Surrender Our Weapons

Hizbullah Shura Council member Sheikh Muhammad Yazbek stated at a Hizbullah ceremony in Al-Haramel: "Hizbullah will not surrender its weapons as long as blood flows in our veins and as long as [Lebanon] has not laid down the foundations for a strong and just state that can protect its citizens and its people..."(10)

Loyalty to the Resistance bloc chairman Muhammad Ra'd stated: "The arming of the resistance is both a privilege and a legitimate right which is anchored in all [international] conventions. Anyone seeking to deny [us] this right using [various] slogans or pretexts is perpetrating a terrorist act and supporting the terrorism embodied by the Zionist entity..."(11)

3. The Resistance Will Continue Making Decisions Independently

Hizbullah Political Bureau deputy head Mahmoud Qamati stated at a memorial ceremony for Islamic Resistance leaders: "[Today,] more than ever before, the resistance movement adheres to its weapons, its power, its capabilities, its independence, [and] its popular drive, since it sprung from the womb of the people and does not belong to any official institution. Indeed, if we become part of the establishment, we will be forced to abide by decisions of state that are dictated by international power balances. If its decisions are determined by the Lebanese state, they will [actually] be determined by the Security Council, the U.N., the Arab League, and all the other international institutions, which we regard as subservient to the policy of the U.S.. Why should we entrust our fate to the so-called international legitimacy, when it has suffered a defeat in Gaza?

"The decision of the resistance will remain independent; its weapons will remain in its possession, and we will not hand over a single bullet. We participate in the [national] dialogue [on Lebanon's defense strategy] in order to create a situation in which the official Lebanese decisions are supportive of the Lebanese army, the resistance, and the people..."(12)

The opposition-affiliated Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar wrote in a similar vein: "Throughout the recent period, Hizbullah leaders have been pointing out that, as far as Hizbullah is concerned, the best possible plan would be to establish the status of the armed resistance as independent of all state [institutions], in order to protect Lebanon and help it to defend itself and to restore its occupied territories... In the wake of the aggression against Gaza, Hizbullah's message has become clear: Only the resistance can lead the struggle. Our experience in July 2006 and in the 2009 Gaza [war] has proved that [the use of] arms can bring victories unprecedented in the Arab-Israeli conflict..."(13)

1. Pakistani Christian killed, other believers injured in mob violence

A Christian woman was killed and at least 16 people injured in an attack on the predominantly Christian village of Sangowali, Punjab province on March 2. According to reports from Sharing Life Ministries Pakistan, the attack was led by a local Muslim, Waseem Butt, in retaliation for charges of robbery and assault placed against him by a Christian family in late February. At approximately 8:00 p.m., Butt and a group of his Muslim friends and family members attacked a Presbyterian church and the homes of believers nearby. Attackers kept ambulances away by firing shots into the air. Shakeela Bibi was beaten in the head with a bamboo rod and succumbed to her injuries before reaching the hospital. Other believers, including Shakeela's mother-in-law, remained in hospital at last report.

Pray for those mourning the loss of Shakeela. Ask God to help those affected by the attack remain steadfast as they suffer (Revelation 2:10).

2. Pastor shot in Bihar state, India

On March 8, the Prarthana Bhawan church in Rothas district, Bihar state, India was attacked by a 25-year-old man who threw a bomb through the window, according to a March 10 report from Compass Direct. As church members fled, the assailant, Rajesh Kumar Singh, entered the building and shot Pastor Vinad Kumar (35). Singh was apprehended by church members before he could inflict more harm. In a statement given to authorities, Singh revealed that he had intended to kill Pastor Kumar in an effort to stop conversions to Christianity in the area and had planned to take his own life. Local Christians claim that the presence of Hindu nationalist groups has increased in the area in recent weeks and the pastor had received a threatening letter from militants demanding that he stop preaching. At last report, Pastor Kumar was hospitalized with serious injuries but was expected to make a full recovery.

Pray for healing for Pastor Kumar. Pray that Singh would understand the truth about Jesus and come to faith in Him. Pray that the bold faith of Christians in India will be a light that draws others to Jesus (Matthew 5:14-16).

3. Malaysian Christian's faith recognized by Islamic court

In a rare victory for religious minorities in Malaysia, a Christian man was legally recognized as a non-Muslim by an Islamic court on March 6. Mohammad Shah (60), who goes by the alias Gilbert Freeman, brought his case to the Sharia court in Negeri Sembilan state after the National Registration Department refused to acknowledge his Christian faith when he applied for a new identity card. Freeman was raised a Christian by his mother after his Muslim father abandoned the family when Freeman was only two months old. As a result, the judge ruled that Freeman had never been a Muslim and his identity card could therefore be changed. The court also found no evidence that Freeman's parents were ever legally married.

Praise the Lord that Freeman's faith has been recognized in this way. Pray for increased religious freedom in Malaysia.

4. Update: "Insufficient evidence" found against Chinese pastor

Pastor Lou Yuanqi, who was arrested in May on charges of "inciting separatism" (see www.persecution.net/cn-2008-05-21a.htm), remains imprisoned despite a judge's verdict of "insufficient evidence," according to a March 6 report from ChinaAid. After Pastor Yuanqi's trial on December 15, his 18-year-old daughter was beaten by court police when she tried to speak to him. Pastor Yuanqi suffers from hepatitis B and the harsh prison conditions have reportedly worsened his health.

Fire in My Bones: The Tragic Scandal of Greasy Grace

J. Lee Grady  info@...

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

This week's announcement about evangelist Todd Bentley's hasty remarriage and restoration is sending a confusing message to the church.

I groaned when I learned early this week that Canadian preacher Todd Bentley, leader of the controversial Lakeland Revival, had decided to divorce his wife, Shonnah, and marry his former ministry intern, Jessa Hasbrook. The news surfaced after almost nine months of silence and speculation, during which time the board of Bentley's Fresh Fire Ministries in British Columbia publicly scolded him for committing adultery.

In a statement released March 10 by Rick Joyner, the popular author and minister who is overseeing Bentley's restoration process, we were told that (1) Bentley married his new wife several weeks ago and moved to Joyner's base in Fort Mill, S.C.; (2) Todd and Jessa agree that their relationship was "wrong and premature" and that it "should not have happened the way it did"; (3) Bentley will remain out of public ministry while he seeks healing; and (4) Joyner will oversee the healing process with input from Dallas pastor Jack Deere and California pastor Bill Johnson.

"Many of us have rejected biblical discipline and adopted a sweet, spineless love that cannot correct."

It was also announced that Bentley plans to relaunch his ministry, called Fresh Fire USA, in Fort Mill, and that Joyner is now collecting donations from supporters to help rebuild it. (The Canadian ministry Bentley started has now been renamed Transform International, and it has severed ties with the evangelist.)

In a few places in his statement Joyner expressed tough love, especially when he said: "We know that trust has to be earned and that Todd will have to earn the trust of the body of Christ for future ministry, which will not be easy, nor should it be." He also made it clear that true repentance and restoration "can only come if we refuse to compromise the clear Biblical standards for morality and integrity."

But there were some glaring omissions in the statements released this week that indicate a fundamental weakness in our freestyle approach to "restoring" fallen leaders.

First of all, it is outrageous that Shonnah Bentley, Todd's first wife, does not seem to be an issue in the current discussion. Her name is never mentioned in Joyner's statement—while Todd is mentioned 18 times. We are never told how Shonnah is handling the divorce. How will she manage to care for the three children she and Todd share? She and the kids seem invisible in this process. Yet if anyone needs healing and restoration, is it not the other half of this broken family?

Second, we charismatics still seem to have a habit of elevating gifting above character. It's almost as if the end justifies the means. (So what if a preacher ruins one marriage and makes a hasty decision to marry a younger woman—the important thing is that we get him back in the pulpit to heal the sick!) That is a perversion of biblical integrity. God can anoint any man or woman with the Holy Spirit's power; what He is looking for are vessels of honor that can carry that anointing with dignity, humility and purity.
