VeriChip, the company that makes radio frequency identification--RFID--tags for humans, has moved one step closer to getting its technology into hospitals.
The Federal Drug Administration issued a ruling Tuesday that essentially begins a final review process that will determine whether hospitals can use RFID systems from the Palm Beach, Fla.-based company to identify patients and/or permit relevant hospital staff to access medical records, said Angela Fulcher, vice president of marketing and sales at VeriChip.
VeriChip sells 11-millimeter RFID tags that get implanted in the fatty tissue below the right tricep. When near one of Verichip's scanners, the chip wakes up and radios an ID number to the scanner. If the number matches an ID number in a database, a person with the chip under his or her skin can enter a secured room or complete a financial transaction.
"It is used instead of other biometric applications," such as fingerprints, Fulcher said.
The approval process does not center on health risks or implications, Fulcher said. VeriChip can already sell implantable RFID chips in the United States for standard security applications and the financial market. The company's basic technology has also been used in animals for years.
Instead, the FDA may mostly examine privacy issues, Fulcher indicated. In other words, the agency will look at whether the technology will lead to situations where confidential information can get improperly disclosed.
Technically, the FDA on Tuesday issued a letter stating that there were no equivalent products on the market. This allowed VeriChip to then seek a de novo, or additional, review. The application process started in October 2003.
VeriChip, a division of Applied Digital Solutions, generated headlines worldwide recently with the announcement that the Attorney General of Mexico implanted one of the small company's RFID tags in his arm.
Fulcher said the basic technology has been around for a while. For 15 years, Digital Angel, a sister company under the Applied corporate umbrella, has sold thousands of tags for identifying animals. The U.S. Department of Energy employs Digital Angel's technology to monitor salmon migration. Several implants have been placed in household pets and livestock.
"We believe the tags can last 20 years," Fulcher said.
The idea for employing the tags to identify humans came after the horror of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, Fulcher said. Richard Seelig, vice president of medical applications at Applied, saw on TV how firemen were writing their badge numbers on their arm with pen so they could be identified in the event of a disaster.
He inserted Digital Angel tags in his body and told the CEO that they worked. VeriChip was born. In June, the company hired Next Level and Motorola alum Kevin Wiley as CEO.

But FN Manufacturing, a South Carolina gun maker, is evaluating the technology for "smart guns," which contain sensor-activated grips so that only their owners can fire them.
The chips themselves are inserted into humans and animals with a syringe. When emerging from the syringe, the chips get coated with a substance called BioBond, which insulates the chip from the body and allows it to adhere to local tissue. If removed, it becomes inactive.
Privacy has been an issue for the company, but the complaints have actually begun to die down. "The pushback is less and less," Fulcher said.
The chip is an ID tag, Fulcher emphasized. When a person with an embedded chip passes near a scanner, the dormant chip simply wakes up and issues an ID number. The administrator of the security systems and databases determines how the information is used. A person has to stand within a few feet of a scanner for the tag to wake up. Thus, the tags can be used to follow someone's steps only when they are near scanners. The company's hand scanners can ping chips about 12 inches away, although the devices for counting salmon are 10 to 12 feet away from the fish.
Also, VeriChip is working on an implant that will contain a Global Positioning System. Such a device would allow an individual with a scanner to pinpoint someone's position on the globe.
The lab device, however, is relatively large right now, about the size of a pacemaker.

This past spring, the Illinois General Assembly passed a new bill requiring compulsory mental health screening for children and pregnant women; it was signed into law by Governor Blagojevich. This program will require all pregnant women and children through the age of 18 be tested for mental health needs.
Public forums are now being held in different locations throughout the state and many alarmed parents are attempting to get the word out: get to those forums and voice your opinion. "We're moving toward social training over academic training with this program," says Larry Trainor, a Mt. Prospect parent of four children and a contact for Citizens Commission on Human Rights.
Trainor went on to state, "Since psychiatric involvement in education, SAT scores have gone down for the past few decades. Evaluating mental conditions is not based on scientific evidence, it's subjective. What if they find a student has a math disorder, a reading disorder? Would that be a mental health disorder, one that would cause the parents to put their children with a drug for a condition they may or may not have?" Trainor asked.
Other concerned parents say they will refuse to participate in such a program they emphatically state has gone way too far with state interference in their lives and the personal lives of their children. Amy Witherspoon said she and her husband will leave the state before they subject their three year old to any mental health screening by the State of Illinois, nor will Amy, now six months pregnant, submit to any state program "invading my privacy under the guise of mental health screening." Amy's husband, Larry, also rang in by saying, "This is just one more step in the state separating the parent from the child via the school system. Compulsory mental health evaluation for my wife against her will? Good-bye, Nazi Illinois."
The Witherspoon's aren't alone in their opinion about health issues in their state. Dom Pagalia, grandfather of six, says the governor and legislature have "gone crazy," passing this new, compulsory mental health law and says the voters of Illinois should "throw out every legislator this November who voted for this forced testing program." Pagalia says his two children, the parents of his grand children, will file a lawsuit to keep the state from any forced mental evaulation of their minor children. Should that fail, Pagalia says they are prepared to leave the state rather than give up their rights as parents.
Under this new, compulsory mental health law, pregnant women will be screened for depression and following her baby's birth, evaluation would continue for up to one year. Follow up treatment will also be provided under this program. All children ages 0-18 years will be provided screening under this mental health program. "Mental health centers" at schools will handle the process to "ensure appropriate and culturally relevant assessment of young children's social and emotional development with the use of standardized tools."
The Illinois State Board of Education is the agency targeted with the responsibility to develop appropriate tests that assess both mental health and academic standards. The current task force hosting these statewide public forums is scheduled to send their recommendations to Governor Blagojevich by the end of the summer in accordance with the Act (HB 2900).

A radical scheme to vaccinate children against future drug addiction is being considered by ministers, The Independent on Sunday can reveal.
Under the plans, doctors would immunise children at risk of becoming smokers or drug users with an injection. The scheme could operate in a similar way to the current nationwide measles, mumps and rubella vaccination programme.
Childhood immunisation would provide adults with protection from the euphoria that is experienced by users, making drugs such as heroin and cocaine pointless to take. Such vaccinations are being developed by pharmaceutical companies and are due to hit the market within two years.
The Department of Trade and Industry has set up a special project to investigate ways of using new scientific breakthroughs to combat drug and nicotine addiction.
A national anti-drug immunisation scheme is one of the proposals being put forward by the Brain Science, Addiction and Drugs project, an expert committee of scientists appointed by the Government earlier this year.
Professor David Nutt, a leading government drugs adviser who sits on the committee, told the IoS that anti-drug vaccines for children are likely to be among the panel´s recommendations when it reports next March.
Professor Nutt, head of psychopharmacology at the University of Bristol and a senior member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, said: "People could be vaccinated against drugs at birth as you are against measles. You could say cocaine is more dangerous than measles, for example. It is important that there is a debate on this issue. This is a huge topic - addiction and smoking are major causes of premature death."
According to the Government´s own figures, the cost of drug addiction - through related crime and health problems - to the economy is £12bn a year. There is a strong incentive for the Government to find new ways to halt spiralling addiction. Last week, the IoS revealed that cocaine use had trebled in Britain with increasing numbers of users switching to highly addictive crack cocaine.
Scientists are already conducting trials for drugs that can be used by doctors to vaccinate against cocaine, heroin and nicotine addiction.
Xenova, the British biotechnology firm, has carried out trials on an anti-cocaine vaccine which showed that 58 per cent of patients remained cocaine-free after three months.
Meanwhile, experts at the Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California, have developed a super-virus, harmless to humans, which produces proteins that can block or reduce the effects of cocaine.
The team at Scripps tested the virus on rats by injecting it into their noses twice a day for three days.
On the fourth day, the rats were given a shot of cocaine. The researchers found that cocaine had more effect on the rats not injected with the virus than those that were. Scientists hope that the virus will help stop the cravings experienced by cocaine users for the drug by blocking the pleasure they normally associate with cocaine. This anti-drug medication is expected to be available to users within the next two years in the form of a nasal spray.
Proposals to introduce a national anti-drug vaccination programme have been given a cautious welcome by MPs and experts.
Ian Gibson, head of the Commons Science and Technology Committee, said the Government would have to carry out public consultation. "There is no reason to think this would not be a starter or beneficial," said Dr Gibson, Labour MP for Norwich North. "But ... proper consultation with the public needs to happen well in advance."
David Hinchliffe, chairman of the Commons Health Committee and Labour MP for Wakefield, said: "This could have a huge impact on society in terms of preventing damage to others and dealing with addicts. [But] the ethical perspective does need to be looked at closely."
The National Treatment Agency, which manages drug-addiction programmes, welcomed any new ways of treating addiction but said there was no "magic bullet".

We find, in God’s Farmacy, fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and minerals, which are high in fiber—this is God’s pharmacy! God has given us plenty of food on this earth, especially in America. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, His ways are higher than our ways. (Isaiah 55:8, 9.) We wonder what is a fruit, what is a grain, what is a nut, and what is a vegetable. Instead of going to man, go to God; He will tell you what it is. He can explain Himself. He gives us a definition through a parable. "Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field: Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree." Matthew 13:31, 32. So herbs can be trees. Any plant is considered an herb.
When you think of herbs, the first thing that comes to your mind is going to a health food store and buying capsules or weeds. All vegetation can be classified as herbs. These herbs, edible plants, grow wild everywhere. When the Food and Drug Administration says we cannot distribute herbs, they will have to make a law saying that I cannot feed people carrots or parsley! Then they will have to find a way to prevent me from growing parsley.
What is the purpose of herbs?
Seasoning and Nutrition
We think about Thyme, Rosemary, and Oregano as seasonings, but at the same time they are nutritional. Thyme is good for migraine headaches. I have gone into people’s homes to have a Bible study, and the man of the house has a headache. How can we study if he has a headache? So I ask for permission to go into their kitchen. I open the kitchen cabinet and there I find Thyme, and I make him a tea. In about 30 minutes his headache is gone, and we can start the Bible study. That is powerful!
Oregano, Basil, and Turmeric are also nutritional. They contain Vitamin C, Vitamin A, antioxidants, and calcium. These herbs are medicinal phytochemicals! Notice what Ellen White wrote over 100 years ago: "It is no denial of faith to use rational remedies judiciously [wisely]." Selected Messages, Book 2, 346.
We ran a health food store for ten years. Two-thirds of our money came from pushing vitamins. That is why we got out of the business. That is not God’s way to teach the health message. We should instead educate folks on how to live. I am not saying anything is wrong with taking a supplement, but pushing pills is not medical missionary work. Things that come on the health food market shelves such as Nonie Juice, and water that costs $2.00 a bottle because it has oxygen in it, are not according to God’s plan. Mrs. White says, "Water, air, and sunshine, these are God’s healing agents. The use of certain herbs that the Lord has made to grow for the good of man, is in harmony with the exercise of faith." Manuscript Releases, vol. 18, 333. Faith works! God says, drink water, and if you drink it, He does something supernatural. God says use a little Rosemary, so you use the natural, and He does something supernatural.
Educate vs. Medicate
Until man duplicates a blade of grass, nature can laugh at his so-called scientific knowledge. Remedies from chemicals would never stand in favor compared with the products of nature. The living cell of the plant, the final result of the rays of the sun, when correctly used, promotes elimination of waste and poison from the system. By simple natural means they support nature’s effort. Actually, though, there is not an herb on the face of this earth that will heal you. Exodus 15:26 says, "I [am] the Lord that healeth thee." These are the things that God has ordained, and if you cooperate with Him, He will give the power of healing. Do not go and buy things thinking that they will heal your arthritis when you are still not drinking water and when you are still going to bed at midnight! You cannot take a pill in place of making a lifestyle change.
"Wisdom is better than weapons of war; but one sinner spoils much good." Ecclesiastes 9:18. God’s Plan is to educate versus man’s plan to medicate. I am not telling you to not take drugs or to take drugs. I believe there is sometimes a place for medicine. If I am in an accident, rush me to the hospital. If it is necessary to operate, do not tell me God does not want me to have anesthesia—put me to sleep! If I need some blood, give it to me. Let us not get fanatical, because there is a place for medicine, but medicine does not kill disease.
Seventy-four percent of 119 plant-derived pharmaceutical medicines are used in modern medicine in ways similar to the way they were used in native cultures. The World Health Organization estimates that 80 percent of the world’s population relies on herbs for primary care needs. I believe that is true. We have traveled over four continents, and we see the indigenous people of many countries use herbs. We find that today 25 percent of all prescription drugs in the United States have an active ingredient derived from trees, shrubs, or herbs. An estimated 30–40 percent of all medical doctors in France and Germany still rely on herbal preparation. I know that to be a fact, because I have been to Germany. I did not go to the health food store to get Goldenseal; I went to the pharmacist. They still use herbs, but here in the good, old USA, people think you are practicing witchcraft when you use herbs. The Germans know that there is no addiction, no dependence. In my 25 years of using herbs; I have had only one case that has had side effects, and that was because the person abused the herb. You do not need a prescription for herbs, and there are no negative side effects—when used rationally. This is the safety of God’s Plan.
Biblical Examples
We are even given biblical examples for the use of natural remedies. Jesus used clay on the blind man’s eyes. (See John 9:6.) Now Jesus created the eyes, and He could have spoken and told the man’s eyes to open. Why did He go through all the trouble of getting some dirt, putting a little spit on it, and then putting it on the blind man’s eyes? To give us an example. It is all right to use things of nature. Christ endorsed the use of natural products.
I’m sure you have read about Hezekiah in Isaiah 38:21 and the fresh fig poultice. I use it on boils and breast cancer. It is high in potassium, and it draws. It is best to use fresh figs. Some people may try to catch you on the statement in 1Timothy not to drink water, but to use a little wine for your stomach’s sake. (1 Timothy 5:23.) See, they say, you can drink more wine than water. But they do not know the Scripture, and they do err. The wine that is talked about in 1 Timothy is unfermented grape juice. When you study the pH or chemistry of food, you learn that grape juice contains malic acid, which helps to neutralize the acid in the stomach. That is why the Bible advises the use of a little wine [grape juice] for the stomach. As Hippocrates said, "Let thy food be thy medicine and thy medicine be thy food."
Phytochemicals
The Bible says the leaves shall be for medicine. (Ezekiel 47:12.) God gave man the green leaves. When a dog gets an upset stomach, it does three things: it fasts; it lays in the sun, and it eats grass. When we get sick, we lay in the shade and keep eating. The Bible says that the fowls of the air should tell thee; the beasts of the field should teach thee. (Job 12:7.) We have 33 percent frontal lobe, made in the image of God; the dog only has 7.5 percent frontal lobe, and they know better than we do!
What is in the plant that the Lord said the leaves should be for medicine? phytochemicals, plant substance. God put chemicals in the plants that are in harmony with the biological makeup of man. Within the green plant is chlorophyll. The molecule chlorophyll is similar to the molecule of hemoglobin that attracts oxygen. The only difference, between the molecular structure of chlorophyll and of hemoglobin, is that hemoglobin has iron as its nucleus; chlorophyll has magnesium. Chlorophyll is the closest chemical to human blood. It is cleansing. That is why God gave man green plants to eat in his sinful stage. It is going to lead us back to the original diet. Yet some people do not want to eat vegetables! You cannot survive without them.
Chlorophyll contains magnesium. Magnesium is the spark of life. The devil thinks he is smart—he is producing all of these foods without seeds such as seedless grapes. The life is in the seed; magnesium, the spark of life. So when you continue to eat the seedless grapes, you are not getting the nutrition you need.
Potassium is one of the most important nutrients in the body, especially dealing with the lymphatic system. We call it the potassium pump. Cancer cells cannot live in a rich potassium environment. That is why every Israelite had a fig tree! Figs are high in potassium. When you have high blood pressure, I guarantee you your potassium is low. When you take a diuretic, the doctor gives you potassium, because the diuretic flushes potassium out of your colon. It creates a vicious circle.
Calcium is the most important element. Ninety-nine percent of the calcium in our bodies is in the bone. Calcium is an alkaline nutrient. When we are on a high protein diet, a high fat diet, a high alkaline diet, the body takes calcium from the bones to neutralize it. This creates another problem—osteoporosis. We talk about ‘Got Milk’ for calcium. Got milk? get allergies! get asthma! You do not need milk to prevent osteoporosis. Canada, Finland, New Zealand, Australia, and America have the highest consumption of cow’s milk in the world. They also have the highest incident of juvenile diabetes, allergies, and osteoporosis. And they still tell you to drink milk! Milk is for calves, not for humans.
Here are some of your phyto-chemicals: carotonoids, beta-carotene, flavanoids, lucien and kale. These are what we call antioxidants. We need these to strengthen our immune system. Lycopene is what gives the tomato, the watermelon, and the red pepper their color. I believe in eating a lot of raw food, but for those who are on all raw, I want to tell you that the lycopene is more bioavailable when the tomato is stewed or cooked. Even the beta-carotene in the carrot is more available when it is steamed, than raw. You have to have a balance of a lot of raw foods, but there is nothing wrong with having properly cooked food. Overcooked food will kill you, but do not tell me that I am going to go to hell because I eat cooked food. There has to be a balance.
Limonene is in the pigment of citrus. It contains antioxidants. There are over 32 chemicals in the rind of the orange peel. One of those chemicals is arsenic. If I have a glass of water, put a little arsenic in it and give it to you, would you drink it? No! Why not? Because it is poison, even though the arsenic is diluted with water. But arsenic is in the skin of the orange. I can peel the skin, put a little honey on it, place it in my oven, and bake it to make a throat lozenge to suck and chew. It has arsenic in it! Why does it not kill me? Because the Master Chemist synergistically knows how to put things together. The Bible tells us, What God hath joined together, let no man tear asunder. (Mark 10:9.) It also warns that if you add to God’s Word or take away, He will add the plagues to you. (Revelation 22:18.) God knows how to balance. It is when men begin to take away, concentrate, and dilute that it becomes a serious problem.
Aloe Vera
I am excited by aloe vera. It is not a wonder food, but it is everywhere; on every continent that I have visited, I have found aloe vera. You know aloe vera as a plant to put on minor burns, and you can buy its juice at the store. Aloe vera is a high sulphur green. We have thought it was part of the cacti family, but it belongs to the garlic family. The Bible talks about this wonderful plant, aloe, that God brought into existence. In Numbers 24 we are told of gardens, planted by the Lord, in which He put aloe. Psalm 45:8, Proverbs 7:17, and Song of Solomon 4:14 mention aloe. In John 19:39 Jesus talks about the aloe and the spices.
There are over 300 different varieties of aloe. Aloe vera is 90 percent water and contains over 200 active compounds in the juice of a fresh leaf. Many important compounds are included in the following groups: vitamins, minerals, salicin acid (which is found in aspirin), lecithin (which is good to deal with cholesterol), amino acids, fatty acids, and steroids. Aloe acts as an anti-inflammatory for arthritis, bronchitis, bursitis—you name it. It is also an anti-bacterial for fungus and an anti-viral that may be used in the treatment of AIDS and cancer. Aloe is one of the primary things I use in dealing with AIDS.
We are involved with a clinic in Zambia where there are thousands of cases a month of AIDS. Because we have an AIDS program, four years ago the Zambian government sponsored a Seventh-day Adventist nurse to come to the United States. She was convinced she could learn how to deal with AIDS. This sister is now doing such a good work in Zambia that the government sponsored another nurse to our school this year. She is going to take over the current clinic, and the other nurse will start up a new clinic.
I received a letter from a colporteur in Africa. He received our AIDS program brochure, and one day on the bus he passed out this information. On the bus was a man who had just been sent home by the doctors to die. The literature evangelist talked to the man and told him what to do. He worked with this gentleman for months. That man thought he would never see another day, but he is living today—free from AIDS, converted from Catholicism to Seventh-day Adventism through the health message. Truly the right arm in action.
Aloe is good for digestion and liver function. It is good for elimination, bowel obstruction, immune system function, auto-immune diseases, fibromyalgia, Hepatitis C, and lupus. I am not saying aloe heals these diseases, but it is good for support. Aloe is also good for acne, anemia, allergies, attention deficit disorder, bladder function, burns, cancer, Candida, cardiovascular system function, cold, flu, constipation, dental and oral hygiene to strengthen the gums, gingivitis, dandruff (shampoo your hair with it), detoxifying your body, diabetes, eczema and psoriasis, hemorrhoids, and sinusitis. Every home should have an aloe plant!
Fillet the leaf of an aloe vera plant, just like you would fillet a fish. Take out the jell, and ingest a tablespoon to a half cup of it internally. It is bitter, but it is going to make you better. Sometimes we take the whole plant and blend it with juice. If you are a diabetic, mix it with other green juice, or you can take it straight. I do not run out to the health food store and buy it; I just use the fresh plant. It is best fresh, because it loses its power to heal within hours of harvest.
People Paste
One of the most powerful natural healers you can use is People Paste. Buy Goldenseal, Myrrh, and Slippery Elm, and mix equal amounts of them together. If you have ulcerated sores, hemorrhoids, or decubitus ulcers (bed sores), just drop this mixture into the sore. It heals and leaves very little scar tissue. If you get cut, put some People Paste on the cut. To help it stay on the sore, mix it with a little aloe vera then apply it; cover it and the healing begins. You can take the People Paste internally. It is beneficial for ulcers, lung problems, digestive problems, Chrone’s disease, and many other maladies. You need to have People Paste in your cabinet. The People Paste is good for all kinds of sores, external or internal, wounds, rashes, colds, fevers, sore throats (gargle with it), inflammation, and blood poisoning. When you go on camping trips, take People Paste with you.
You should also have Goldenseal, Peppermint oil, Eucalyptus oil, and Tea Tree oil in your medicine cabinet. When I go to foreign countries I take Goldenseal and a few other things with me. When I go into the jungles of Thailand, I take Goldenseal, garlic and People Paste. If you cannot find Goldenseal, use Barberry; those who live in Oregon can use Oregon Grape in place of Goldenseal. Antiviral and antibacterial, Slippery Elm is mucilaginous, soothing to the digestive tract.
True Method
"The true method for healing the sick is to tell them of the herbs that grow for the benefit of man. Scientists have attached large names to these simplest preparations, but true education will lead us to teach the sick that they need not call in a doctor any more than they would call in a lawyer. They can themselves administer the simple herbs if necessary. To educate the human family that the doctor alone knows all the ills of infants and persons of every age, is false teaching, and the sooner we as a people stand on the principles of health reform, the greater will be the blessing that will come to those who would do true medical work. There is a work to be done in treating the sick with water and teaching them to make the most of sunshine and physical exercise. Study: Chemicals in plant counteract effects of blood loss

WASHINGTON - The aloe vera plant could provide a fluid to help keep alive trauma victims such as battlefield casualties until they can get a blood transfusion, U.S. researchers said on Monday.

Tests on rats show that the sticky fluid found inside the leaves of aloe vera can help preserve organ function after massive blood loss, the team at the University of Pittsburgh said.
Writing in the journal Shock, they said just small injections of the substance helped counteract the more immediate deadly effects of blood loss.
“We hope this fluid will offer a viable solution to a significant problem, both on and off the battlefield,” Dr. Mitchell Fink, a professor of critical care medicine who led the study, said in a statement.
“Soldiers wounded in combat often lose significant amounts of blood, and there is no practical way to replace the necessary amount of blood fast enough on the front lines. When this happens, there is inadequate perfusion of the organs which quickly leads to a cascade of life-threatening events,” Fink added.
Aloe is rich in polysaccharides “Medics would need only to carry a small amount of this solution, which could feasibly be administered before the soldier is evacuated to a medical unit or facility,” he added.
The researchers, who got funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, tested the mucilage from inside aloe leaves. It is rich in sugar compounds called polysaccharides that affect the qualities of fluid.
“It may provide better diffusion of oxygen molecules from red blood cells to tissues because of its ability to better mix in the plasma surrounding red blood cells,” said Marina Kameneva, an artificial blood expert who worked on the study.
They tested rats, injecting them either with the aloe derivative or salt solution after draining them of some blood.
Just half the 10 rats injected with saline survived, while eight of 10 rats that got aloe did.
In a second experiment involving more blood loss, five of 15 rats survived for two hours after getting aloe compared to one of 14 treated with saline solution alone. Seven animals receiving no treatment all died within 35 minutes.
Trauma is the leading cause of death for people under the age of 40 in the United States, killing 150,000 people a year. Loss of blood accounts for nearly almost half these deaths.

Children required to be screened for mental health problems from ages zero through 18 is an invasion of parental rights, several parents said at task force hearings held throughout Illinois this week.
CHICAGO -- Finishing up a week of public forums, the members of the Illinois Children's Mental Health Partnership ended early in Chicago today following testimony from an overwhelming number of program supporters who agree that mental health screening is needed for Illinois children ages zero through 18.
As a hyphenated sponsor of last year's legislation, State Representative Patti Bellock (R-Wheaton) said she thought that the stigma on mental health problems was fading, and that the new mental health plan's main emphasis was to create an awareness of mental health needs in the state's children.
The Illinois plan is the first in the nation to have progressed thus far.
"This program will not be voluntary,"
Paul Schneider of Champaign told the task force. "No one will be exempt. If a family doesn't want to accept the school's evaluation of their child's mental health, what recourse will they have?"
Schneider said he is very concerned that pharmaceutical companies will benefit tremendously from having an explosion of young children diagnosed with hyperactivity or ADHD whose parents are told that their children need Ritalin or another psychotropic drug.
"Who is going to pay for this and who will determine who is mentally healthy and who is not?" Schneider said. "I'm a business owner, and this worries me."
Bellock agreed that questions are likely to be raised as more people learn about the contents of the program, something, she said, she hadn't had time to fully read through yet herself.
"I am one of the appointed task force members, but I'm not familiar with all this contains," Bellock said. "There should be a lot of discussion and that's good to get us to the place where we can find consensus," she said.
Tragedies like the Columbine shooting are connected to young people who are depressed and with low self-esteem, she said. Studies show that one out of six students suffer from depression, the reason why she believes such a program is so important.
The proposed plan says that depression affects a child's ability to learn and increases their propensity for violence, alcohol and substance abuse and other delinquent behaviors.
If the plan is implemented as suggested, pregnant women will begin evaluation for depression and will check in during the first year after their expected babies are born.
"If anyone thinks they can escape this because their children are not in public schools, they are mistaken," Schneider said after hearing the testimony at the Champaign hearing on Monday.
Mental health assessment will be added to the state's physical examination certificate, along with mandatory immunization records. All children in Illinois, unless religiously exempt, are required to have up-to-date health examinations and immunizations for school entry.
Schneider said he was also concerned when a woman asked about how "sexual orientation" would be handled in the program.
"She basically bashed Catholics for their strong conviction against homosexuality," he said.
The $10 million set aside for the mandatory screening is likely to be simply for the start up, and that's what concerns some who voiced opposition at the public hearings.
For others, it was an invasion of parental rights.
"We are here reviewing one of the largest recent attempts by the state to subvert, devalue and undermine parental authority in Illinois. 'Subvert' sounds harsh, and we recognize that many hours have been spent by many well-meaning people to draft this 26 page plan. No disrespect is meant, but our concerns must be presented," Karen Hayes, associate director of Concerned Women for America/Illinois told task force members today.
The recourse may be minimal for those who are not happy with the program, however. It is already law, signed in to law by Governor Blagojevich last year. A report will be due on September 30, 2004, according to the provisions as they have been set up in the law.
On the other hand, a task force member Barbara Shaw told a downstate reporter that, "We heard very different points of view with thoughtful input," Shaw said. "The greatest thing I took out of this today was a reminder to think outside of the box. We don't have to think in traditional ways."
Hayes, frustrated that the state legislation became law with little or no fanfare or notice, even from conservative, pro-family lawmakers, suggested at the end of today's testimony, "In summary, it is neither beneficial to children, nor to taxpayers, to ask government bureaucracies to set competency standards for mental health.
"With some amount of lightheartedness, may I propose that the mental health of the perpetrators of this concept be evaluated?"
OK, I'm letting you know results for these places- by the way, more

The Congress has quietly authorized establishment of not more than one hundred (demonstration) mental health courts in the United States. An amount of $40,000,000 (over four years) was authorized to set up the courts under the supervision of the US Justice Department.
The original bill (S1865) was sponsored by Sen. Mike Dewine of Ohio and co-sponsored by Sen. Domenici of New Mexico, both Republicans. However, it was rewritten by Sen. Orin Hatch (R. Utah) in his Senate Judiciary Committee and reported to the floor without a written committee report.
The bill passed the Senate on Sept 26, 2000 under “unanimous consent” (without objection). The House adopted it on Oct. 24th by voice vote under a suspension of the rules. President Clinton signed it into law on Nov. 13th.
Thus, there is no record of how anyone voted on the measure or how many were present at the votes.
That’s the history. Now for the law’s provisions.
The law would apply to all “preliminarily qualified offenders” defined as persons having, “previously or currently been diagnosed by a qualified mental health professional as having a mental illness, mental retardation, or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorder, or manifest obvious signs of mental illness, mental retardation or co-occurring mental illness and substance abuse disorders during arrest or confinement or before any court..”
The term “mental illness” means a diagnosable mental, behavioral, or emotional disorder that meets diagnostic criteria within the most recent edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders published by the American Psychiatric Association.
It provides for continuing judicial supervision, including periodic review of “preliminarily qualified offenders” who are charged (not convicted, but charged) with misdemeanors or nonviolent offenses. The list of offenses that would subject a person to the jurisdiction of these “mental health courts” is to be developed by the Attorney General in consultation with the Secretary of Health and Human Services and any other officials deemed appropriate.
The law also provides for “centralized case management” involving, “consolidation of all of a mentally ill or mentally retarded defendant’s cases, including violations of probation, and the coordination of all mental treatment plans and social services, including life skills training, such as housing placement, vocational training, education, job placement, health care, and relapse prevention for each participant who requires such services..”
Would opposition to a “'Gay' Rights city ordinance” be enough to bring one under the jurisdiction of a mental health court? You bet. For years the American Psychiatric Association classified homosexuality as a mental disorder. About fifteen years ago they dropped that and added “homophobia” (disapproval of homosexuality) as a mental disorder. If this law were enforced as it is authorized to be, that would be evidence enough to make the person a “preliminarily qualified offender.” Off to mental health court he would go.
You say it can’t happen in America. Well, it is.

Yesterday, the House Appropriations Committee approved $20 million in new federal dollars to begin implementation of the plans set forth by the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health (NFC) to get every man, woman and child in America “screened” for “mental illness.”
Amidst broad public concern that many of the antidepressants being prescribed to Americans are under federal investigation for causing suicidal reactions, the New Freedom on Mental Health Commission’s campaign for national mental health “screening” – will result in millions more Americans being diagnosed with fraudulent and unscientific mental disorders, and prescribed dangerous and deadly psychiatric drugs.
Now, $20 million has been approved by the House Appropriations Committee for “State Incentive Transformation Grants,” in order to begin nationwide implementation of the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health’s plan. It’s the beginning of a “Brave New World” should the Senate fund this.
The Commission based its entire findings on the definition of mental illness as defined by psychiatry’s billing bible, the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The methods of mental health “screening” recommended by the New Freedom Commission are lists of arbitrary questions based on this DSM. If this “sweeping mental health initiative” is implemented, millions more American’s will certainly be diagnosed and drugged given the subjective diagnoses.
FACTS:
Ø The New Freedom Commission on Mental Health’s report states that “mental illnesses are shockingly common,” but neglects to address or even mention the fact that there is no medical or scientific means by which to diagnose mental “illnesses.” Psychiatrists and mental health proponents promote psychiatric “disorders” as a disease, or an illness that can be diagnosed in the same manner as real physical illness. This is a fraud. There are no blood tests, brain scans or chemical imbalance tests to validate any mental disorder as an illness or “disease.” With no scientific/medical criteria to substantiate these claims, anyone could be diagnosed as mentally ill based solely on a checklist of behaviors.
Ø The DSM contains hundreds of psychiatric mental “disorders” which are a list of behavioral symptoms that are literally voted into existence and inserted into the DSM. Such diagnoses include “Caffeine-Related Disorder,” “Mathematics Disorder,” “Disorder of Written Expression,” and the all-encompassing “Phase of Life Problem.” These “disorders” are simply a classification of symptoms that are drastically different from, and foreign to, anything in medicine.
Ø The New Freedom Commission is blatantly promoting the coercive and manipulative tactics that have led to millions of children being falsely labeled with mental disorders in our public schools. Schools have become mental health clinics where children are diagnosed based on subjective questionnaires, instead of given proven educational solutions. This fact was substantiated by a report from the President’s Commission on Excellence in Special Education, which found that 2.4 million children had been diagnosed with mental “disorders” and placed in Special Education, when in fact these children had simply not been taught to read.
Ø The issue of coerced child drugging in public schools has become so prevalent that the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Child Medication Safety Act in May 2003, to prevent schools from forcing a parent to drug their child as a condition of attending school.
Ø Due to psychiatric influence, parents have been reported to Child Protective Services and charged with medical neglect for refusing to give their child a psychiatric drug, such as those currently under investigation for causing suicidal reactions. Parents have been charged with “medical neglect” for refusing psychiatric treatment – despite the fact that there is no scientific proof that there is anything medically wrong with the child.
Ø In a recent report by Allen Jones, a former investigator in the Pennsylvania Office of Inspector General (OIG), Bureau of Special Investigations, condemning the New Freedom Commission (NFC), he states, “Despite a nearly 500% increase in American children being prescribed mental health drugs during the past 6 years, the New Freedom Commission on Mental Health found that not enough adolescents are benefiting from mental health treatment. The NFC recommendations prominently call for mandatory mental health screening for all high school students, with follow-up ‘treatment’ as required – this means more kids on mind-altering and potentially lethal psychiatric drugs.”
WHAT TO DO:
1) Oppose any federal, state, or local plans for universal mental health screening. Contact the White House (202-456-1111), the Speaker of the House (Rep. Hastert at 202-225-2976) and the Senate Leader (Senator Frist at 202-224-3344), your own Members of Congress (go to www.congress.org), the House Education and Workforce Committee Chairman John Boehner at 202-225-6205, and the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee Chairman Judd Gregg at 202-224-3324 and tell them to STOP funding this New Freedom Commission on Mental Health plan in the Labor/HHS appropriations bill. Alert your state legislators and oppose school board initiatives to add psychiatric screening programs.
2) Support the Child Medication Act (S. 1390) currently stalled in the Senate by Senator Edward Kennedy - This legislation prohibits schools from coercing parents to place their children on psychiatric medications that are on the controlled substances list. Senator Kennedy, with large support from pharmaceutical companies, has not let this very modest proposal even receive a hearing, saying that it needs more study. Senator Kennedy (202-224-4543) as well as Senator Gregg (202-224-3324) the Committee chairman, and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (202-224-3344) need to hear from the public.
3) Check to see if your state has a provision in state special education law that prohibits a school district from overriding parental refusal to submit their child to a special education or mental health evaluation. If yes, alert other parents, and if not, work for one.

As far as the one with the separate warehouses, I had looked over their website and in google search trying to find out what those capitalized letters mean, and to no avail! Now I know! Thought they were rather strange looking, but you live and learn. (Sometimes NOT the easy way!) I was so glad to find the shipping charges list that I didn't even think to read the 'small print' at the top of the page.
Hi, Cyn- ok, here is the deal, from my experience. If it's not moldy, then you've got kombucha vinegar.
When you leave it for a long time and it turns to vinegar, then it gets both fat and pure white. I think this
is what they use, sometimes cut into little 'cookie cutter' circles, when they send them out to you from the
places that specialize. If this is the case, if you see NO FUZZY CIRCLES, and it doesn't smell moldy,
but vinegary, then you've simply made kombucha vinegar. Which IS GREAT, both for using in your
next batch- both the scoby and the vinegar, and you can even use the kombucha vinegar itself, for
yourself! It's not like the 'apple cider' fizz drink you'd have had earlier, but very healthy nonetheless.
If you see FUZZY CIRCLES and smell mold, then you must get rid of ALL OF IT- or if you insist
on using it, cut the mold off then use garlic on it. And don't drink that batch. Actually, unless you have
a very lousy immune system, it wouldn't kill you. White mold would most likely be Aspergillus, which,
believe it or not, they are now using in health food cleansing formulas! And it cleanses- you could get
crampy and have the runs. My guess is, from you description, you simply went to vinegar stage and
beyond, and have a beautiful pearly white mushroom! It's awfully hard for mold to form if you did
it right and if it's that acidic! I found out a few tricks to make the taste better - I put in a small amt. of
epsom salt to make it more alkaline- which is real cute because it makes it fizz! (Haven't done it to my straight kombucha vinegar, but imagine it still would) and I add some grapeseed oil. You'd be surprised how this takes away from the vinegary taste! Or you can just use it like vinegar- still keep it covered, but you can leave it sitting out instead of fridging it- and your scoby will be great. Be sure to transfer some of that great vinegar into your next batch! And again, keep everything clean! Hope this helps!-- "Cheyenne Cin"

Cinnamon oil is an environmentally friendly way to kill mosquito hatchlings, a Taiwanese study shows.
It might even make bug repelling better smelling -- although whether cinnamon oil keeps adult mosquitoes from biting has yet to be tested.
The findings, from Sen-Sung Cheng, a natural products chemist at National Taiwan University, and colleagues, appear in the July 14 issue of the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry.
Current mosquito-control efforts often rely on organophosphate insecticides. Use of these agents has raised health and environmental concerns, Cheng and colleagues note, so they looked for a different approach. They noted that cinnamon leaf oils have been shown to inhibit bacteria, termites, mites, mildew, and fungi.
Cheng's team derived various oils from the leaves of a type of cinnamon tree that grows in Taiwan. They tested the oils -- and their main ingredients -- against the larvae of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes. This is one of the mosquito species spreading dengue fever -- a viral illness transmitted to humans by mosquitoes during the feeding process.
They found that one chemical in the oil, cinnamaldehyde, worked the best. At less than 50 parts per million, it killed half the mosquito larvae. That's better than DEET, currently the best-known mosquito repellent which is applied on the skin and repels insects rather than kills them.
"We think that cinnamon oil might also affect adult mosquitoes by acting as a repellent," Cheng says in a news release.
Cheng says his team plans to test this theory.
Cinnamon oil -- which has not been tested for use as bug repellent -- is sold in small bottles as an aromatherapy.
According to the National Toxicology program, cinnamaldehyde is used in foods, beverages, medical products, perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, detergents, creams, and lotions. It's also been used as an animal repellent, as an insect attractant, and as an antifungal agent. It may have toxic effects at high concentrations.

As I have been informing you we have been having issues with the Federal Trade Commission. Because we have excerpts from Dr. Clark's books on our website http://www.drclark.net, the FTC has been claiming that Dr. Clark Research Association makes false products claims.
This pointless fight has been going on for 3 1/2 years. A year ago we agreed that we would de-link the informational and the products website, but it seems that is not good enough for the FTC. They want the information GONE!

The bad news: I will be somewhat limited in what I can say as I will keep working for Dr. Clark Research Association to keep going with the research projects. And as the ones of you who have been following my work for the past 6 years know, I do not like to shut up! I can still say what I please but only as long as it does not involve products we sell. That is the price I have to pay to do what I most want to do, which is research.
The good news: Dr. Clark Information Center is independent and has no commercial interests, and they are free to say whatever they please and believe to be correct! That means, you get the straight dough. NO more beating around the bush like we have been having to do since last September due to the FTC's action against us. No more censored versions specially made up for US readers, no more barred links for US readers. Dr. Hulda Clark will be BACK ONLINE FOR GOOD.
So, I am giving you mainly good news today. And I hope that one day the US citizens will stand up and flush the FTC and the FDA and their crap down the toilet and that will be the beginning of a new day for real health.
