King Springs 60mm Low Rear Leaf Fitting   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #323 of 2013 |
Hi Guys
Well today I managed to fit up the rear leaf springs to the jumbuck
and I have to say 60mm sure drops it on its guts geez it looks low.
It wsan't wihout it hassels thou, and I would advise anyone not to
tackle this job if they don't have access to a lot of tools. The king
springs don't come with bushes in them, you have to remove the origanal
ones and reuse them providing they are OK as mine were.To get them out
you will need a PRESS of some sort thats the only way they will come
out.To do that I had to machine up an aluminium round plug the
diamater of the eye in the spring, this had to be machined out hollow
one end so as to only push on the steel sleeve, and not the rubber bush
itself. That took a while to do,I only have a small Lathe. That made, it
was easy then to push the bush out of the spring in a large bench vice
with a pipe sleeve on the other side to let the bush fall into.
Pressing them back in was fairly easy too with the plug I had made.
A few things for the young players, The left hand front bolt on the
spring mount wont come out all the way as it hits on the exhaust
pipe. Its quite hard to pull this out of the way to get the bolt
out.You need three hands,so a mate would be handy at this point.(I
didn't have one). The right hand side spring is much the same,The front
bolt hits on the petrol tank, you have to unbolt the rear swing hinge
first and the ubolts to allow the spring to twist to get the bolt
out past the tank. You could probably get away without buying new
u-bolt like they recommend and save the $60.00 but I found the new
ones are 8mm longer than the origanal ones,as the king spring has 4
leaves as apposed to the origanal 1 leaf and after it is all bolted up
there is only 1 thread sticking up past the nut.so if you used the
origanal ubolts it would only be in about half the nut.
(probably why they recommend new ones).
The other hassel I found in doing it yourself is.The top bracket over
the spring which the u-bolts tighten on to is a flat plate,The king
spring has a bolt/rivert head on this side, which the origanal ones
don't,So you will have to be able to drill a 16mm dia.hole in this
plate to go over the rivert head.I had a bench drill handy,so this was
no problem,(but good luck drilling 16mm with a hand drill).
The king spring bump stops are 40mm shorter than the origanal ones and
just push over a pin with a mushroom head,Thats all that holds them in
place. The old ones just pull straight off.no problems there.
when the car is back on the deck the bump stop just touches the
spring, and you can wriggle it around a bit,but it can't come of.
Hope this covers most things,If anyone has any questions, drop in a
post and I will try to answer everything. I have posted some pics in
the MY JUMBUCK FOLDER for anyone interested.Im hopeing to do the
fronts tomorrow but its getting close to xmas so the other half may
have something to say about that, have to see?? Have a good XMAS Guys.
Best Regards Neil VK2KYG
