Hi Guys
Well whilst waiting for the auto elec bloke to turn up I have been
working on my GTi door sill plates.A most of you will know the sill
plates on a GTi are a lot longer than the jumbuck plates so I have had
to cut them down to length and cut the rounded end off and TIG weld it
back on the end,Then file and sand all the corrugations of the pressed
plate back into it.Then I had to buff and polish all the markes out of
the stainless steel and then I hand cut all the pin striping out of
carbon fiber look film. I then marked out the holes onto the original
plastic sill plates and drilled thru into the body work with a small
pilot hole.Bought some square nylon bodywork screw plugs and had to
file a square hole into the body for the plugs, once that was done I
painted up all the edges and pressed the plugs into place and screwed
on the new sill plates over the jumbuck plastic ones. I have posed
some pics in MY JUMBUCK album have a look and let me know what ya all
think
come up pretty good I thought, just takes that plain look away. The
stainless looks good mirror finish. The jumbuck is evolving slowly.
Regards neil

185/65/14" are 596.1mm in dia. cause in qld your only allowed 15mm over
stockin dia. your choices would be if you go with the 16" rims with a
215/45/16" at 599.9mm or a 205/50/16" at 611.4mm. go back to stock 14"
rims with a 185/70/14" at 614.6mm and in both cases see if you can get
a tyre with a heavier sidewall 6ply or 8ply but with heavier wall you
may still get a firmer ride. in your case the middle number in the tyre
size is the one to watch as it is the depth of the wall ( aspect ratio
% of width and dia ) hope this confuses you . jeff

Thanks Jeff, I've even understood most of the message! As the new
wheels are quite good looking (well, I think so) I'll probably wait
till the current tyres wear out and go for the 205x50/16's. Thanks for
your help. Do you know if NSW have the same restrictions on tyre sizes?

Hey Guys
Just a bit of an update. Things are pretty much at stand still
at the moment.I haven't been able to work out the wiring before I
start it up. One of my sons mates is an auto electrician and has been
trying to get over for the past 3 weeks to help me sort it
out, unfortunately his job has been flat out for weeks and I haven't
seen him yet,but I'm hopeful he will make it this week sometime. In the
mean time I have just been playing with a few things, tidying up all
the looms, plumbing up the boost control solenoid, and I had to make a
custom oil catch can for the PCV valve outlet.I had intended to use 2
bought ones, but found there just wasn't enough room to put one in that
size,so I made a small round one from some of the 2.5" left over
intercooler piping. It's packet with stainless steel wool to collect
any oil droplets on the way thru.Got a few more pics up so you will
get the idea.Anyway all the fluids are full and ready to fire up, if
the eleco ever gets here.
It's been very frustrating not being able to complete it myself and
having to wait for someone else to look at it.I guess we can't be an
expert at everything haha..Keep ya posted.

Yeah it dusnt suprise me you didn't get figures. It Took me 2 visits
and the "We know the same person card".
From what i can gather the owner had a bigger turbo and internals
done, Plus the full brake upgrade, Radiator; and 4WD upgrade which
was new custom tail shaft, Shortened diff with new evo gears. Plus
all the labour ofcourse which i gathered was around 8 grand.
They wernt the cheapest parts either or top shelf for that matter.
So unless your good with a spanner its gonna cost ya.

Big coincidence for me, talkin' tyres, too! I may as well ask now.
My GLSi came with the standard Proton alloys with 185x65/14 tyres. My
youngest son was selling his CC Lancer with 'Millenium' 16" alloys,
so he came to visit at Christmas & put them on the car for me. The
tyres are 205x40/16. Now me, wanting to get away from a harsh ride,
and maybe adding a tiny bit of ground clearance for the country roads
I travel each day, want to put on some BIGGER, THICKER tyres (not the
low profile ones). What would you suggest??

Thanks Ben, looks like I'll have to save up a bit more. I'll probably
do it in stages, with the dynamat & speakers first. I'll let you know
how I go.

these fit? thanks

rubbing. there's a 12.5 mm difference in overall dia between the two

Hey mike,

No probs...

Yeah in my pix you can see ive done the inside "skin" of the door and the bit the panel bolts too, ive now also covered the holes that you can see thats what creates the box effect.. but the components i list will set you bout ~$1500 with the dynamat and a decent headunit

the speaker cost $350, amp is between $700 (depending what kind you get, but the best is the 2 channel pdx (he is a link http://www.alpine.com.au/products/product.asp?modelID=264)) and a headunit will cost you from $300 to $800... but ask for a good price and they should give it too you

hope it helps abit more

Thanks Ben, you've been a great help - now all I need is MY Ben (son)
to translate "pdx2", "150RMS" and "splits" etc. Seriously, he'll take
the info and research it over here and offer a cost-effective solution.
Did you dynamat the door skin as well as behind the door trim to create
the "box"? OR I saw the pic featuring the interior of your car
during the rebuild. It looks like you've "pushed in" the dynamat to
form a shape in the spaces in the door frame - is THIS the "box"?
Thanks once again

hey mike,

i had a box that was made up by alberts here in wa... i dont know the size they just made heaps at a time... its was a 10" sub and the amp was mounted under the seat for alittle while and then i made a custom mount box that sat behind the seats where that pocket thing is, that held an amp for the sub and one for the speakers and a cap. the only problem with the sub was the seat had to be moved forward and there wasnt much room for the passangers... i know i was a passanger once in it when i was driving back from the country with my sister... If you want bass do this....

get a good amp im running an alpine PDX 2 channel it puts out 180 watts RMS but they normally run 150 watts RMS and some alpine type R's splits and get them to tune them for bass and dynomat the door skin and inside panel to create a "box" then when you want your bass you get it and also have good sound at the same time

You could run the type X but there no good for the bass side of things type r are made to have alot of power put into them.. mine sound great but still need abit of tuning but the bass is good and im happy with it

i did away with my sub when i went to put the evo engine in so a few month back

But you should upgrade to a new headunit too... the head unit is 50% of your sound so you wanna get a good one

let me know how you go and anymore Q's just ask... ill try to find a pix for ya but i  donno if i have any

Sic CC Jumolution wrote a while ago about a sub box fitted in his
cabin, behind the passenger seat. Could you please post a pic or 2 of
how it looks, and maybe a quick line drawing showing dimensions?
Please? Where have you mounted the amp and do you think I'd get
satisfactory performance out of the standard Proton/Clarion head unit?
I'm not into big bass, but would like a bit of thump when it's required.
If anyone else has a small sub fitted I'd be pleased to hear about it.
Many thanks.

Hi Benny
I'm surprised Dave hasn't come up with  somewhere,as I sent him a copy of my cable diagram and he refunded me the cost of them from the rear disk conversion kit I bought from him.. It isn't that hard, all you need is someone with a hydrolic crimper  and you should be able to buy the end ferrals of the cable from mitsubishi.Other wise give that Namiiss place a ring who made mine up from my diagram on 02-49611988 they have the drawing as well. My hand break cables are 15 months old now,and I haven't had any problems with them at all,I needed to adjust them once about 3 weeks after the install to take up the stretch and haven't touched them since.Worth every penny and no mucking around.
But there must be someone over there who makes wire cables?Where does all your steel cables come from??? Keep us posted .
Regards Neil

I rang RPW in wa and they told me that the jumbuck motor is faceing the
wrong way for a dohc head.so it is either a piggy back ecu with fuel
pressure regulator and cold air induction or just a straight 2lt
conversion no turbo.

Hi Trev
Maybe they meant the only heads they have in stock are for a motor facing the other way.
I'm sure there are earlier models with the engine the same way.
You could always get a 1.8 lt sohc and drop that in,it would be about 25% power increase over standard and they should be as cheap as chips to buy,and I'm sure you don't have to get it engineered either.Or just get a small turbo fitted to it standard..  Keep us posted.
