Hi Guys
Just an update on the rebuild.
I should have the block back this friday, its been bored and honed for
the cp pistons, rods and pistons are being balanced along with the
crank flywheel timing belt gear and harmonic balancer.unfortunately I
don't have a pressure plate or clutch yet.I have managed to pick up a
gearbox from a satria GTi which will get me rolling until I can find a
GSR AWD box and continue with the AWD conversion at a later stage.
Once the block is back I have to set the ring gaps, check all the
clearences and finally start to put it back together.
More Later.
Regards Neil

Hi Guys
Well the CP forged pistons arrived today, from Hi Octane Racing in
sydney. Zertek one of our members works there,if your ever in need of
pistons, look him up and he will look after you.
I have posted some pics of the pistons in my rebuild album. They come
nicely boxed and I have had the mics all over them and as you would
expect there all perfect in size to each other,Al thou the spec. sheet
that comes with them says they weight 301 grams ea. When I weighted
them I get 301.2 301.4 301.4 301.5grams which is pretty good.Anything
within a gram is considered OK,But me being very fussy I will trim
them so they are all the same weight,as I did with the conrods.
All up $902.00 delivered to my door. Sweet.
More latter.
Regards Neil

Hi Guys
Bit if an update on the rebuild. This week I ordered a set of CP
forged pistons at a favorable price from one of our group members.More
on that later. I have posed up 6 pics of the work I have been doing on
the inside of the engine block to improve oil flow. The first pic
shows how rough the inside of the block is and you can see the oil
clinging everywhere. The second pic shows an oil puddle laying in the
corner near the cylinder. The sump had been off for a month before
turning it upside down to remove the crank.
The other 4 pics show all grinding work being done to prevent the oil
collecting in all the casting corners. The block casting is extremly
rough inside with huge dags and lips on all the internal ribbing.
All the grinding was to tapper all the ribs, smooth and round off all
the edges so the oil cannot collect on them and will return to the
sump easer and faster where it belongs. This should improve cooling too
as the oil will recycle faster.More Later.Keep ya posted.

Hi Guys
It seems by some of the recent posts people seem to think a nudge bar will protect them in a crash. As you can see in the pics, this is not the case. As evo4two said there a place to hang spot lights,or in my case to hold the front carry rack which drops into the sockets on top.
There is a very real difference between a Nudge and a Crash.
A nudge is when your in a car park and you pull up a bit close to the garden bed and nudge it, it will save the paint, but thats all.
Hopefully no one buys one with protection in mind.
Regards Neil

this is unfortunate but normal. nudge bars that meet the crash
testing regulations set but the ADR's will mostly bend like this you
will find that nudge bars and bull bars that are designed on mass
will all also comply with airbag rules as well irispective if the
car has an airbag or not. they are a false sence of hope. and more
of a place to hang spotlights.

Hi Ant
If your after the center console from a glsi you might try/join the proton GTi forums,They have a sale section and the GTi console is the same as the GLSi
there have been some advertised there in the past. Try
http://protongtiforums.com/ or ring around all the wreckers.
The jumbuck GLSi and the Satria GTi are the only two models I know of with the same console, but if you find one,it will bolt straight in. Good Luck.

To the next unlucky person who writes off their GLSI let me know as I
have just had a look at the GLSI's while I was waiting for my GLI to
be serviced and have realised how damn sexy the centre console is. Now
I want one...:D. After talking to the service manager and finding out
you can't buy it as one piece is comes as about a dozen different
parts it seems ridiculous to purchase one from Proton. Supposedly the
two main plastics come to around $100 then the plastic rim around the
gear stick is $260....WTF?!?! and then there is the Lid and latches
and what not. So if anyone has a centre console or sees one at the
wreckers let me know :D.

Peace Out.

Gday all,

Ive just uploaded some pictures. In the smashed jumbucks folder you
can see my car, 15kmh crash and the Priem and Baker Proton OEM nudge
bar bent like a coke can. The bar bent near the base, pushing into the
bumper, grill, bending the bonnet and rupturing the radiator. Fair bit
of damage done, I really wonder what sort of damage would be there had
the nudge bar not been fitted. For around $730 for the bar, you would
think it would protect better. I must say though, budget direct
insurance have been really good. Two thumbs up to them.

Anyhow, the Jumbuck is currently in the hands of Mirror Finish in

The stock stereo is held in place with 4 tabs,2 on each side which are bent out into the cradle to prevent it coming out.with the trim off you should be able to see them.there about 15mm in from the cradle bracket, you should be able to slid a small screwdriver in and bend them back out flat against the side of the stereo.
these clips are fixed to the stereo and must be straightened out to remove the stereo from the cradle.Hope that helps.

How do you remove the stock Clarion Head unit from the mounting
bracket? I have taken off the plastic trim and I see 2 little hooks.
I'm assuming that sliding a couple of screwdrivers down each side
would allow me to pull out the stereo but it doesn't want to come. Do
I need Clarion removal keys or can I make do with what I have? Any
advice would be great.

Hi Russell
My nudge bar is 63mm and 6mm thick which was custom made at Opposite Lock 4WD Accessories. They later changed there name to Ozbars Fabrications
and have now closed down the business, but 6mm thick its as strong as,and mine has the 1" sockets in the top for the front carry rack to drop into.
I havent seen the ones proton use in person, but it sounds like there very weak.

I havn't seen the proton nudge bar. When I bought mine they didn't sell them, would like to see a pic of that as well.

For such a low speed prang (<15km/h), a lot of damaged was caused by
the Proton nudge bar. Nothing but scuff marks on the other car. But
the nudge bar bent at the top, pushing the nudge bar into the front
of the car and bonnet, splitting the radiator.

So I cant say I recommend the Proton nudge, bent like a can of coke.
Will try to get a pic before it gets fixed, but this was the exact
sort of minor crash I thought the nudge bar would save us from damage.

Can anyone tell me where to get a bullbar like Rumbucks or Haydens?
Hard to get fitted? will the send one to Victoria? Any idea on price?

Thanks.

Russell,

Thanks for the info. I might try to contact them later on today. I
found the invoice from Proton which listed all my accessories from
when I bought the car. Baker and Priem nudgebar was $700! Ive tried
dealing with Baker and Priem directly before via email. Their replies
were short and abrupt, and they never read my email properly so didnt
answer my question. I had told them I had their nudge bar and was
asking for a price on the sports bars and ladder racks. They replied
saying for a nudge bar I have to go to proton. Dickheads. So I asked
again, they responded with, you still have to go to proton for sports
bars and ladder racks. Based on that service, the price and the
product Id rather go elsewhere.

I found a link to the mob you mentioned, not much info on the website
but it has all the contact details:
http://www.customalloy.com.au/index.htm

Another place of interest is these guys, but they would need the car
for the work (bars, or roll top covers):
http://www.alloy.net.au/

I also called Boomer bars (Rumbuck's bullbar) yesterday, price for a
jumbuck bullbar is $1270 for satin finish, or $1470 for polished plus
around $200 freight to Melbourne. Would take them about a month to
build due to current workload.
http://www.bnsgear.com.au/

Ive got to call the insurance company today for an update. Shall keep
you all posted.

I have got a 3" Allloy Nudge Bar on my Jumbuck work ute. It is made
by Custom Alloy in Brisbane. This aloloy bar is made from appros
4mm thick alloy and shouldn't bend like the standard Proton thing.
Sustom Alloy also do 3" Polished Ladder Racks Roll Bars as well.

Give them a call on 07 32041266. These guys specialize in making
custom made alloy Bull Bars for 600hp Kenworths and Macks and the
like. They do an abosolutely brilliant job.

I didn't think there was a genuine Proton nudge bar.If they get from Baker and Priem thats ok 75mm thou.I think is a bit big looks a bit out of proporsion, mine is 63mm there's is a bit higher as well, maybe why it bent so easy.

Hi Jamie
Thats sad news,Hope you can get it fixed soon.If you could get some pics that would be good, there is an album in the photo section for smashed jumbucks
just pop em in there. If you haven't had a look before,There are some photo's of a mates jumbuck which had a bull bar fitted, his smash was at 100 klm/h and while the car was a write off he only chipped an ankle bone and walked away.
I havn't seen the proton nudge bar. When I bought mine they didn't sell them, would like to see a pic of that as well.
Regards Neil

Thanks.

Hey Jamie
have been doing some surfing and found a pic from a company in
Toowoomba called Boomer Bullbars their site
is "www.bnsgear.com.au/home". Go to Gear dropdown, Bullbars, the pic
is the second shot next to the 5 Post Standard (50mm) title. Price
stated is $1270. As for shipping and fitting im in the dark.
When you find out can you post it up. Also could you take a few
shots of mounting points as i have to design a bar from scratch for
the F@%ked up WA laws.
Hope ya find what ya need there is probably other companys that will
do it. I know Tuff Bullbars will do one but last I heard they
needed a bus for a week to get a design.
East Coast Bullbars do a Roo bar and 2 styles of nudge bar so you
could try them aswell.

Regards §nake
