Sherry,

I'm working hard on getting the website together. It's not that
difficult, just time-consuming due to the number of chapters that need
to be set up. I've finished two of my fics and will keep plugging away
at it. I hope to have it up some time this week so with any luck that
will make things easier for you. I'm keeping it pretty much text-only.
There's only one image so far and that's on the entry page with a text
link underneath.

Yeah, Azkaban's Heir is at an early enough stage that I may be able to
weave some aspects of HBP into it. Certainly I'd like to be able to
bring the Horcruxes in but I'll see how I go.

Cheers,
Kate

Oh, I just had to comment on something. Though I'm still having trouble
getting the pages to load, I'm packing to move today, so I can tolerate the
2 minute waits. So, I just finally read chapter 4 of Azkaban's Heir. I
laughed so hard at Harry's though of having his own internal Mrs. Weasley!
Hilarious.

I'm also very interested to see how you'll handle this fic, as it's so early
in the story. as far as NBP events will affect it.

Sigh. Starting today, I'll be using dial up again, so, I wonder how long it
will take the pages to load then. Guess I'll have to plan reading around
unpacking and taking my dog outside and things like that.

I have finally updated! Sorry it took so long. I had summary problems
with Trinity on FictionAlley and it took a bit longer than I thought
it would to sort out. I didn't want to get out of kilter with what
I've got here and what's on FA. So in this update you get:

Crystalline Darkness - Chapter 26

Trinity - Chapters 5-7

Azkanban's Heir - Chapter 6

Avatar - Chapter 8

After Voldemort - Chapter 10

Hope you all enjoy them!

Cheers,
Katling

That is so cool that you lived in San Jose! I didn't expect to know

Kate:
I didn't even know where San Jose was when Dad announced we were
moving there. I really liked it. The weather was very similar to
that in Melbourne and there was a lot of Aussie ex-pats living there
working in the computer industry like my Dad. We lived in a condo in
San Jose for six months then when Mum and Dad decided we were going
to stay for two years, they bought a house in Santa Clara. I've got
a lot of great memories of living there and if I had to live
anywhere other than Australia, that's where I'd go. I've still got
my Harker Academy t-shirt from when we went to summer school the
first year we lived there and I still got my yearbooks from
Eisenhower Elementary. I had the best teacher there! It was funny -
I cried like anything when we left Australia then I cried like
anything when we left America.

Regarding the website - Thank for your input. It's very much
appreciated. I suppose it's the little things that are important and
so often get overlooked. I have a friend who is red/green
colourblind and she loathes the websites that insist on having a
black background because she has enormous difficulty in reading
those sites. And the ones that use red writing on a black
background - she just throws her hands up and swears at the computer.

From what I've been doing so far, it's going to be fairly
minimilistic. Just text mostly with a fairly plain font.

Cheers,
Kate

Hi Kate,

i also use the word blind. i scoff at visually impaired, because I think
even my friends who wear glasses to read or drive could be considered
visually impaired. When I say I am blind, people know exactly what i mean.
I'm not afraid or ashamed of it, since it's just who I am.

As to ways to make your site more accessible, here are a few things. I'll
also try to give you examples of accessible web sites.

Try not to have links that are graphical images without text labels. For a
bad example, check out amazon.com. Their home page is dreadful!
Fortunately, they have a text only site, but if you just go to the main
site, it's hideous.

Try to avoid mouse over links. older versions of screen readers don't see
these as links. so, you could activate them by moving your mouse over them,
but we would only hear the name but couldn't activate the link. We activate
links on a web page by pressing enter. It's ok to have pictures and
graphics, just try to have them labeled with text.

Otherwise, I don't see that your site could have a lot of problems, since
it's going to be a place where you post your writing. oh, things that
involve flash technology can be a big pain for people using screen readers.
Check out the difference between

www.jkrowling.com

www.jkrowling.com/textonly

Some web sites are very cumbersome. A really bad example is fiction alley.
I hate that site. It is so hard to find what i want. The search function
is a joke. When You do a search, or if you look at stories by author, for
example, you get a huge long page with way more information you could ever
need. I've never even been able to figure out what order they put things
in. And it is a list of story titles, discussion threads and author names.
I rarely will search for something on the site because it is just too
tedious. I get the chapter owls for updates, because I just can't stand the
site. however, the pages for the stories are easy and uncomplicated. Look
at the pages for your own stories.

I can't see that you would need forms to be filled out on your site, but if
you do, have each for field labeled clearly. some fields have things like
name, address and phone in text at the beginning, and then a series of blank
edit fields with no labels. That can be very confusing to try to remember
what was supposed to go where.

Here are some web sites to check out.

www.audible.com
this site can get tedious, but it is basically very easy to use with screen
readers

www.guidedogs.com
this site has a regular graphical site and text only. But if you look at
it, the graphical site has everything clearly labeled, and i never bother to
go to the text only site anymore.

www.amazon.com
as an example of one of the worst! Not only is amazon's home page bad, but
if you were to search for Harry Potter for instance, on audio, you can get
the most cluttered obnoxious pages. There are ways we can create place
markers on web sites we use often, in order to find places quickly every
time we visit, but they never work with amazon. I never buy anything from
amazon anymore because it has only gotten worse over the years.

www.seattlelighthouse.org
An example of a site from a blindness agency that was designed for sighted
and blind people to use easily. A site doesn't have to be plain to be
accessible.

And actually, once you can register for yahoo, the site isn't bad to use at
all. It's quite accessible. It's just the registration process that isn't.

That isn't the problem I'm having anyway. The site just won't load anymore
for some reason, not without taking several minutes to load each page.

That is so cool that you lived in San Jose! I didn't expect to know someone
who lives in Australia who has lived in san Jose! wow.

Please feel free to ask me any other questions about accessibility, or
anything. and if you'd like me to check out your site as it gets developed,
let me know.

Heh! Yep, Ginny's wormed her way back in alright! It's in Chapter 6
(which I haven't uploaded yet) and I think you'll find it funny.

Sherry:

Kate:
I am actually in the, admittiedly slow, process of setting up a
website as well as this group since I know some people don't have a
Yahoo signin and some don't want to get one. It's going to take a
bit of time and will only be very basic when it first gets going but
I suppose that doesn't matter too much.

Speaking of which - I know you are amongst a few of my readers that
are, as the politically correct say, visually impaired. (My friend
Tiffany always preferred blind as a bat but she was an odd girl *L*)
Is there anything in particular I should do to make the site more
accessible to you?

And a second incidentally, I just had a look at your LJ user bio - I
see you grew up in San Jose. I lived there (or thereabouts) for a
couple of years when I was younger - mid-eighties to be precise. We
lived in San Jose for about six months then moved down the road to
Santa Clara for another eighteen months. It's a small world, ain't
it? :)

Sherry:
the release of HBP made almost every sixth year and beyond fic into
an au story?

Kate:
Man! HBP blew just about every post-OotP fic out of the water. I
don't think there are many that could be reworked to take into
account what happened. Though I dare say the author of the Final
Straw is crowing - he wrote evil, triple-agent Snape! His Snape even
killed people, though it wasn't Dumbledore - Remus and Mr and Mrs
Weasley from memory. Oooh, that was a chilling scene!

Kate,

I read the first chapter of Trinity on fiction alley yesterday. I'll give
it a review on the site but I just wanted to tell you it was great. I'm not
sure I want JKR to go the route you've chosen, but I think it's a great
premise for dealing with the shocking ending of HBP. i loved how Harry and
Ron and Hermione were working and planning together. they have become such
adults, and we did see that at the end of HBP. I hope you'll figure out a
way to worm Ginny into it. I don't know if I can see her allowing herself
to be shut out of Harry's life like this. Anyway, can't wait to see what
else happens.

i still can't access the yahoo site, so I'm woefully behind on all your
other stories. sniffle.

By the way, i think continuing your post Hogwarts fics already under way is
logical. You really have gone too far to change them. Isn't it kind of
funny, though of course not for all you authors, that the release of HBP
made almost every sixth year and beyond fic into an au story? i've decided
JKR is as Ron might say, bloody brilliant!

Just a quick message to let you all know what is happening with this
one. I have written a couple of more chapters but I'm waiting for
the frist four to be uploaded at FictionAlley before I upload more.
I don't want to get myself out of sync with my uploads! I will also
have some chapters for some of my other fics as well.

While I'm on the subject of other fics - my post-Hogwarts fics. I
have made a final decision. Most of them are too big to go back and
rewrite to take into account some of the more momentous events of
HBP so I will continue them on as though HBP has not occurred,
though I may use some bits and pieces from HBP (like using the
patronus as a messenger 'cause that's a really neat idea, Fenrir
Greyback may make an appearance or two 'cause I really liked him as
a bad guy, I may even be able to bring the horcruxes into one or
two).

I may even bring the horcruxes into my Sixth Year AU fics - I think
most of them are in a state where that is possible. In case you
hadn't noticed, I love the idea of the horcruxes. So delightfully
evil on Voldemort's part. We'll see what happens with that one
though.

Back to the update - I had some summary troubles and that seems to
be delaying the upload of chapters 3-4 to FictionAlley (Chapter 1 is
up though!) but as soon as all four chapters are up, I'll do the
next update.

Cheers,
Katling

I think you'll find it's going to be at least two years. Jo Rowling
said in an interview she won't start writing the seventh book until
next year - she wants to spend some time with her new baby. So
figure minimum a year to write (but don't be surprised if it takes
longer) and at least four to six months to get through the
publishing process. That means we're looking at a minimum of two
years, potentially longer. She has promised not make us sit through
another three year wait but I just don't see how she's going to do
that if she doesn't start writing until next year.

Waiting as patiently as possible,
Katling

Well, good, I want him to suffer. :-) What I mean
though I would love to see the depth of his remorse

Thanks for your comments, Alla. They are always much appreciated.

Trinity is my denial fic, I suppose you might say. My "No, Dumbleodre
is not dead and Snape is not evil" fic. :)

I suppose we have to believe that Dumbledore is dead and Snape really
is evil. Though there are enough tidbits in HBP to make me suspicious
of Snape. I think he did kill Dumbledore but those little tidbits are
making wonder just what the hell he's really up to.

I suppose my problem is I don't buy the fact that Dumbledore trusted
Snape solely on the fact Snape told him about Voldemort going after
the Potters. Even Dumbledore knew how much Snape hated James and let's
face it, he wasn't overly fond of Lily either. (Though calling her a
mudblood was a touch hypocritical.) Dumbledore might like to believe
the best of people but that's stretching the imagination a bit too
much for me. Surely he would have used legilimency on Snape? Which of
course poses the question of just how good at legilimency Dumbledore
is? We've never actually been told. Is he better than Voldemort?
Either way, Snape's been lying to one of Dumbledore or Voldemort.

You are right about Dumbledore's last minutes if Snape really is evil.
Damn, that would have been hard.

Back to Trinity - You will see a bit of Dumbledore (in fact both
Dumbledores!) but mostly in his interaction with Aberforth and Snape -
he is ill after all. And no, Snape will not have it easy. Think about
it, it could not be an easy job, being Voldemort's right hand man.
Sure you have a cushy and somewhat protected position in the
organisation but you're also within easy reach if things go wrong. And
those Crucio's hurt! All I can say is when it's all over, Harry better
appreciate what Snape went through.....though I'm sure Snape will let
him know all about it! *L*

Not to mention the fact that Order is out after Snape's blood!

Cheers,
Kate

I finally read Trinity. That was because as I said earlier for a few
days I could not make myself pick up any "Snape on the right side"
story.

I am still not feeling very much up to it, but since it was you, I
decided to give it a try. :-)

Funnily enough, your scenario ( meaning Dumbledore indeed was in
cahots with Snape, but in order to fake his death NOT to ask Snape to
kill him) is the only one which makes some kind of sense to me IF
Snape will turns out to be on the side of Light after all.

Do I find it to be likely? Honestly, NO, not really, but I would love
for it to be true, simply because I pity Dumbledore's last minutes SO
much.

To know that person whom you trusted so much betrayed you after all.
Sigh...

I just don't see Dumbledore asking anyone to sacrifice his soul for
ANY higher purposes.

I think JKR beat us over the head with the baseball bat in HBP with
the idea that murder hurts your soul.

Right, as we had been discussing Snape on HPFGU over and over again,
I am very fond of Snape not being evil all this time, but pretty much
CHOOSING evil when push came to shove ( you know, swinging between
god and evil, being out for himself, whatever)

I do think that final act of redemption will follow in book 7, but
for now, I am pretty convinced that canon Snape is not on the side of
angels.

Just me of course.

I think everybody else in your story is SO canonical though.

Harry's determination is SO well done and I always found their
friendship to be one of my favourite part of the series.
I am glad that you are following canon in this.

I am happy that you let Albus leave, don't get me wrong ,but even
though I want it to be so, I doubt that this is what will happen in
canon.

Oh, I hope that your Snape will still have major moments of guilt,
since now we finally know that he contributed to making Harry an
orphan in the first place.

I am looking forward to where you take this story, no doubt about
that.

Alla.

Right, think that may be enough! <winks>

1. Am also of the belief that R.A.B. is Regulus Black.  I also happen to think that we've seen the locket before, in OotP p108, where they're cleaning out the cabinets at Grimmauld, and they come across a locket 'they cannot open'.  And, Mundungus stealing the Black silver, which started in OotP with the candlesticks and continued into HBP, also suggests that Dung might have already sold the Horcrux on?

2. No, I might be biased from the tending-towards-good fics I've read here (am thinking of Katling's fics as well here), but there's definitely something more going on here with Snape than meets the eye.  To me, he almost warns Harry about needing to work on his wordless magic when they're dueling.  Snape and Dumbledore ''glance'' at each other before Snape casts the curse - Occulmelency (yeah, the book's in my room for the spelling!) maybe being used here?  Dumbledore sends Harry for Snape - why would he do that? Maybe because they worked it out in advance: if he doesnt kill, Draco is redeemable, and Snape is back in the inner circle.
On the Draco front, I think he was intending to kill Dumbledore but didn't go through with it.  Just out of curiosity, anyone else think Draco was under Veritaserum in the Astronomy Tower? The way things seemed ''forced'' out of him? Would Draco really spill all that to Dumbledore willingly?  Plus, remember when they first went into Advanced Potions, with all the cauldrons?  All the ones described were integral to the plot (am still trying to work out the first one though, sounded like a calming potion?) - Veritaserum is never mentioned, but hinted at in the Tower scene.

3. As above: Snape and Dumbledore obv knew something was going to happen - Dumbledore demands Snape, and Snape only.  I've thought for a while that if Harry was going to face Voldy alone then Dumbledore would have to die first - maybe he thought the same?!

And I'll agree that Dumbledore is there in spirit only - but maybe he's left notes, clues or magical wards which will continue after his death?  Oh, who knows when it comes to J.K.?! I went into denial at the AK curse!

Amy

PS I'd like to take this opportunity to say to Katling how much I'm loving ALL her stories - I've been following them since early in Guild, and she's just got better and better! (though Daemon Sidhe is my favourite - <sobs> how long till an update?!)

Basically enough space to make sure any spoiler stuff doesn't show up
in the preview you see of each post. It's usually best to use
characters as the preview tends to ignore blank spaces.

Hope that helps,
Katling

Spoiler for HBP - DO NOT continue if you haven't read HP6!

1. I agree that R.A.B. is Regulus Black. Either that, or it's some
random person we haven't heard of, which is possible.
2/3. I think DD's death was probably set up between Snape and
Dumbledore, considering DD knew he was a certain target. However, I do
NOT think Draco was in on the secret, he doesn't seem able to act well
enough to wait until Snape got there. Also, why would Draco have
waited to let Snape be let in on the inner circle instead of himself?
He would have worked just as well considering that he has never been
suspected of being a double agent.
As for Dumbledore's death, I think he really is gone forever. He was
AKed, he's in a big tomb, and Fawkes is gone. Though I like Kathryn's
idea, I think the quote meant he would be with them in spirit because
he had taught them.
Oh, and random question - how much spoiler space is considered enough?
I just held the enter key down for a bit.

I get is a page not found error.

There always has to be one, doesn't there? :) That's one official
smack over the knuckles for not using a spoiler tag for spoiler
information from HBP. Remember some people may still be reading it.
Please be careful - if you do it again in the week and a half, I will
have no choice other than to ban you for....dang, however long I said
I would. :)

Hi Kate,

What's the address to your LJ? mine is

www.livejournal.com/users/sherriola

Can't wait to read the new story, but I've had a difficult and heartbreaking
day today, so it will have to wait till tomorrow.

By the way, has anyone else been having trouble with the site in the last
week or so. every time I would go to the yahoo group site and try to read
your most recent updates, it would take about a minute for each page to load
and became too frustrating. I haven't tried it since last Friday because of
half blood prince and personal troubles today.

Sherry

Hi Kate,

I'm not posting any spoilers. Only saying that I too am recovering from the

makes sense. we all love the stories as written, so finish them up, at

HUGE SPOILER!!!! DO NOT READ IF YOU HAVE NOT FINISHED READING HBP!!!!
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

Now, on to my humble, and probably incorrect, theory. Snape saved
Draco from becoming a murderer as he was trying to be faithful to the
Unbreakable Vow his made to Narcissus at the beginning of the book.

Also, Dumbledore was pleading with Snape. . . to go ahead and finishe
him off because they both knew he was dying? or for the antidote?
Personally, I think it was too late for the antidote, and the only
chance for Draco's "salvation" was for someone else to act. To AK
Dumbledore at that point was a mercy killing. Certainly a
questionable moral choice, but it is suspected that Snape has killed
before. For Malfoy to kill D. would be to cross the line and
Dumbledore did not want Draco to do that. He was trying to save him,
even at the last.

I still think that Snape will come to Harry's rescue in Book 7. Will
JKR see it my way? Who knows? Snape is not NICE, but basically GOOD.
We will also find out WHY Dumbledore trusted Snape. Bugged me that
that little secret was kept still longer.

Anyway, my paltry theory. We shall see.
